This newsletter sees us launch our latest and highest Holstein Genomic pack yet (see inside). It features 5 sires with a remarkable GTPI average of 2690 and 2.46 on type. Later this spring will be our 7th annual Leading Edge Genetics On-Farm Competition occur. Our judge for this year’s competition is Mr.Brian 014. Carscadden from Semex. Brian is well regarded in judging circles having judged many of the major shows around the world.

Historically, the August proof run is a quieter result in terms of newcomers - this run being no different. Genetics Australia’s leading BPI sires Geemcee and Wrangler, both had increases in their BPI and their overall type scores. Wrangler in particular, now at 106 on type will get a lot more market traction as a result. This improvement was due to some daughters being incorrectly identified in his initial proof. A bull mentioned in our April newsletter was Coomboona Superstition Regal from AltaGenetics. He has now lifted to 225 BPI (189 daughters) and 107 on type (76 daughters). The added bonus with Regal is that he is proven and well ranked in both America and Canada. Well priced in the current climate, Regal is certainly a bull worthy of consideration for 2016. An exciting development has been the take-up of International companies to genomically test their bulls here in Australia. This has many benefits for the dairyfarmer. These include offering some diverse bloodlines and also adding some reliability to the database. For the companies themselves, it allows them some new marketing opportunities for those that test well in the Australian system. One of the interesting pieces of information that can aid in maximising your conception rates is semen fertility data. In Australia the adhis.com.au website contains semen fertility information. All bulls with over 400 recorded inseminations will have a value placed on their semen quality.
Viking Genetics is clearly the number one choice for Red Genetics with 6 out of the top 10 sires on BPI are Viking Reds. The great V Foske holds the number one position with an impressive BPI of 291. He has had nearly 70 more daughters added since the April proof run and has now more than 400 daughters in Australia. V Foske is the greatest bull that has been marketed in Australia and now his sons are starting to get daughter proofs.

The top V Foske son, VR Flame is a new proven bull and is number 3 on BPI. The bull is no stranger to our shores as he was used here as a genomic sire and his daughters are coming into production now. VR Flame has now a proof with 784 daughters in Scandinavia and with a NTM of +22 he is one of the top proven sires. The daughters are high producing with excellent components. Health traits are good and he is a calving ease sire as well. We are also excited to see that our Holsteins are putting a stamp on the Australian market. Old favourites, D Sol and VH Miracle’s ABV’s are improving with more daughters in Australia. VH Miracle was a former top genomic sire and has now 11 900 daughters in Scandinavia in his proof. He is a top bull in Australia for all three indexes (BPI/HWI/TWI) but especially HWI were he is the number 8. His health traits are outstanding and he also transmits great udders and work abilities to his daughters. With Jersey we have a super team of young sires, VJ Zeppe, VJ Haley and VJ Buffo with the type the Aussie farmers asking for; larger framed with good strength and udders.

Jersey Proofs from Australia - Highlights The August proof release revealed no major changes to the top 10 listing. However, 2 bulls that continue to shine as they increased their reliability are Valentino (up 31 BPI points). One of the stronger sons of Navara, CRVMarvarie improved his cell count and has developed a strong type linear. There is a new number 1 in the genomic listing with the Genetics Australia Navarian son in Seahorse lifting to be now 293 on BPI. A new addition to the top listing is also Minx the Tbone son from Agri-Gene at 287 BPI and is 108 for overall type.

GEEMCEE consolidated his claim as the number one Holstein sire in the breed with an impressive 40-point lift in his BPI rating placing him 30 points ahead of his nearest genetic rival. American Proof Results USA Proof Highlights... A changing of the guard occurred in the August proof run with a new #1 TPI sire in Sandy Valley Saloon (Iota/Planet) from Semex. The maternal brother to Saloon in Sterling slipped a little, but is still ranked # 7 on the list. Another descendent from Sully Shottle May in Sully Munition (Bookem/Planet) from Semex graduated strongly at #5. The continued strengthening of S-S-I program at Select Sires is evident with 3 sires in the top 10 and WWS having 7 of the top 10 listed bulls. The genomic TPI releases (>12 months) saw a couple of new bulls feature in the top 10. These included Outlast (Doorsopen) and Granite (Monterey) from Semex and Legendary (Damaris) from WWS. The acquisition by the Semex Alliance of the Progenesis breeding program is already proving to be a wise investment. The impact is evident already with Outlast and Granite both originating from the program. Those A.I companies who have invested in a well managed elite female breeding program are certainly reaping the benefits from a genetic advancement position. Interestingly some of the premier genomic bulls from 12 months ago are now available in conventional form, including household names in Jedi and Modesty from WWS.
The 2016 Leading Edge Genetics ON FARM Challenge is fast approaching. The 2016 judging will take place from Wednesday 23rd to Saturday 26th of November. We are delighted to have Brian Carscadden from the Semex Alliance judging our On-Farm Competition this year. He is sired by the Holland origin sire SUPERSHOT who is one of the feature sires of the current COGENT UK team. His dam ENCHANTED has a 305 day lact., of 10,180 kgs., milk at 4.2% fat and 3.1% protein, and is a daughter of the highly acclaimed MCCUTCHEN, whose performance worldwide around udders and feet and legs is exceptional. ETESIAN’s own Genomic profile indicates high total yields of F+P with breed average component percentages, but it is excellent scores of PTAT 2.25 and UDDER COMPOSITE 2.14 that will attract most attention to him.

Latest proof round from ALTA. The latest proof round had a mixture of great results including improvement for many of our bulls. AltaOAK doubled milking daughters and improved for TPI to 2483. Now with 2464 daughters AltaOAK is the definite “go to” bull for Milk with Strength. AltaOak also improved to 1.32 UDC and is plus rated for every UDC trait with 961 scored daughters. A new emerging calving ease specialist AltaGILCREST also debuted at a higher TPI than his genomic proof. With the addition of 126 milking daughters gains were made for Milk to 2400lbs, Fat to 63lbs and Protein to 66lbs. AltaGilcrest also strengthened for DPR up 0.7, PL up 0.6 and PTAT up 0.34. His increase in TPI of 158 points to 2460 shows Gilcrest to be one of the premier genuine CE bulls of the breed. Canadian Proof Results Holstein Proofs from Canada - Highlights One of the better uddered bulls in the breed is Coyne Farms Dorcy (ranked #4 GLPI) who now has sons in the #2 Mogul (WWS) and #3 AltaAgency in Canada.
