A small Colorado-based company, Voormi, is touting a technology that produces a waterproof, breathable textile with only a single layer of material. “Our angle is to streamline waterproof breathables into a single-layer construction,” says Timm Smith, Voormi’s marketing director.

Voormi’s new technique gets rid of the lamination altogether. “Rather than glue a membrane to a fabric, we put the membrane into a knitting machine, knitting a yarn in and around and through the membrane, so we get a single-layer textile with a (membrane) core that’s constructed in the process,” says Smith. “It’s an entirely new platform.”
Clever fabric HotSquash has a warm and cool collection, but some of our clothes are just very clever! They help regulate your body temperature, helping you to not get too hot or too cold. They are also anti-odour and quick drying Regulate your temperature. The fabric's thermobuffering properties protect you from temperature changes, for example regulating your temperature if there is a chill or it is too hot. NASA (and chef's!) use this technology. HotSquash has developed lovely soft touch fashion fabrics so you can look fantastic.

ministry of supply REGULATE YOUR TEMPERATURE Taking NASA’s lead, Ministry of supply incorporated Phase Change Material (PCM) into the Apollo. It’s the same technology used to regulate astronauts’ body temperature in space suits: PCM absorbs heat away from your skin when you’re overheated, then releases it when you’re cold - for a dress shirt that keeps you at just the right temperature all day.

DE1136 Fashion futures Reflective Third Person Evaluation The team project highlighted how Amber was a key team member helping the success of the team; she showed a strong, consistent performance throughout. As a team leader, she approached the task in a systematic and professional manner to drive the team to complete tasks to a strong outcome. She developed key skills including organisation, time management and design skills and knowledge including CAD, trend prediction and concept and colour boards. Throughout the task she used her own initiative to pick up group tasks that weren’t completed and kept her drive the entire time. She also developed skills from the design for industry team members including presentation layout ideas, 3D rendering skills and research methods. For future improvements for the task, she should try out 3D development, looking at ways to present her ideas differently, for example mocking the trainer design up in 3D to create a ‘realistic’ design. During the individual project Amber developed different research and development methods to create and evolve a design concept. She identified an evolving trend in the market; the idea was original as she identified it through her own observation and experience. She explored a range of ideas at the beginning of the task and managed to choose a focus area for her final boards. This was presented in the final boards showed specific development, chosen colour story, fabric research and an example of what her ‘kit bag’ would look like. Overall, she developed her concept thinking and learnt how a product has to have a reason behind it and a need in the market. She showed areas of 3D development, working on the stand with existing garments and looking at how origami could influence design. Further improvements for Amber would be to explore using more 3D areas, moving her paper design onto fabric, start progressing from there and also begin looking at the garment functions more.
