Obstrenity

Sense of place Concept Generation DE1135 Jenny Marshall

Obstrenity, is the name I’ve created to resemble a new sense of place that has been introduced to me. This name has been formed from the words, obstruct serenity, which how I’d describe the atmosphere within an abandoned building. As kids, a sense of adventure was present, but as we grow older that spark is often lost or difficult to re-ignite. Before I felt a sense of adventure through watching movies, or through gaming however, these recent explorations lead me to rediscover that spark. There is something about seeing what time and nature can do to a strong structure, once so formal and constructed, now rotting and defaced. The structured form combined with infestations of decay has inspired this project, looking at something that appears unaestheticly pleasing but holds a peculiar element of beauty.

Buildings stripped and left to rot, returning to its skeleton, sad but beautiful

Whilst exploring through a maze of rooms, skeletons of past lives can be seen, founding a sad yet peaceful feel in particular places.

Initial designs. Working development, looking at what direction my designs where going to take, and how to present them.

From finding the white shells of animals, represented, to me, how buildings have been left, over time rotting back to its skeleton structure. Therefore I included features of animal skeletons within my designs. I’ve also looked at structure paired with spontaneous flow, for the silhouette of my designs, presenting the purpose of a building with bursts of destruction and decay, representing the abandoned element.

Design Development

The theme of harsh surfaces combined with flowy ones kept naturally re-occuring within my designs. The feature of change to the garment, through string and toggle kept appearing, inspired by the fastening at the top of the camera stand bag. Along with patterns inspired by found textures.
