ABOUT GIDDY STUDIOS
National prominence for local pottery painting studio!
Giddy Studios, Rathfarnham’s pottery painting studio, came to national prominence recently when it featured recently on RTE’s Tubridy Tonight. The show’s blind date couple went to Giddy Studios to paint their interpretation of each other on pottery plates. “The guys were absolutely brilliant and really got into it’, according to owner Helena Dilleen. “It’s clear that pottery painting really is suitable to all ages and personalities. Traditionally it would have been seen as a kids activity only but I think the environment has an awful lot to do with who it appeals to’, says Helena. Helena went on to say “The studio is bright, beautiful and to quote a giddy customer, ‘it gives you a lift!’. There are lots of adults who are really interested in the idea as an alternative to going to the pub or out for a pizza. The big question for us was ‘do you need to be creative?’. It can be as easy or as intricate as you wish and we have pieces and design ideas to suit everyone. No matter what people do their pieces come out brilliantly after being glazed and fired. And it’s something they’ll have forever”. 6 | ABOUT BALLINTEER
When chatting to Helena she was waiting on a group of 14 adults to arrive for a girls night out and the previous Thursday the studio served over thirty pottery painters. Giddy has also a number of corporate groups for a bit of ‘team building’, which has gone down a storm. Opening hours in the evening are by appointment, so call in advance to book. Everyone can bring their own tipple - beer, wine, bubbles. Helena told me that Hen painting parties are going down brilliantly, with some groups designing the ‘bride-to-be’ dinner service and signature plates for their wedding day - the creation of giddy heirlooms! Check out giddystudios.com for an ongoing schedule of mid-term workshops, seasonal events, and themed nights. Ireland’s Family Leisure & Entertainment Website Paul Tonge (Cabinteely) and Carl Keenan (Knocklyon) are two childhood friends who have recently set up a website called Familyfun.ie.
Both are married with young children who identified a gap in the market for a family leisure and entertainment website that makes it easy for parents of young kids (mainly aged 3 to 12 yrs ) to explore the many activities available to them in Ireland. “We found that whilst there are lots of websites on the market covering elements of what we have on

Familyfun.ie, there was an opportunity to create something that was comprehensive, truly relevant in content, and easy to navigate.” Following months of research on websites around the world, lots of late night debate and a further 9 months development and more late nights, Familyfun.ie went live mid October ‘08. According to Carl, “The feedback to date has been fantastic! It’s free and parents love the idea of being able to find everything in one site from viewing clips of childrens movie releases to exploring family venues to party planning ideas. We have lots of plans for the future to enhance the site and its content, so this really is just the beginning.” “We want the FamilyFun.ie site to become a valued and regularly used resource for parents when planning their leisure time with their kids and hopefully your readers will give it a try and like what they find!”

Round the Garden in March March is a guessing game in the garden. Will it warm up soon? Will it stay warm? Will the rains start/stop? About the only thing we can count on is that March too shall pass. So go ahead and push the envelope, but keep the row covers handy. Everyone should have their seeds started, their trees and shrubs pruned and their tools ready to go. After that, the most important thing is to have patience. It’s tempting to take advantage of warm days, but spring gets the last word in the garden. Here are some March gardening tips to take with a spoonful of judgement.
by Tom Percy
· Start feeding houseplants again. Repot, if necessary. · Avoid walking on wet soil in the garden · Hardy annuals can go out even before last expected frost · Wait until the soil warms and dries before planting summer bulbs, tubers, etc. · Perennial vegetables and fruits can be planted once danger of frost has passed and the ground is workable · Prune roses before the buds break · Plant shrubs when the ground warms

ABOUT THE HOME ENERGY SAVING GRANT SCHEME
Do Your Bit to Reduce Global Warming! by Philip Thompson – Registered BER Assessor
The government recently announced initial details of a €100 million grant scheme designed to assist homeowners making their homes more energy efficient. The obvious benefit to availing of this scheme is a warmer home, costing less money to heat, and having a better BER rating. Dry-lining walls has the additional benefit of giving a new surface ready for painting. If a home also needs rewiring, dry-lining can cover up many of the new wires, reducing the amount of dust and cost involved. The grant scheme is open to all owners of existing homes in the state, built before 2006. Owners of multiple properties may make a separate application for each property. Fixed grants will be available towards reimbursing some of the cost of the following measures: MEASURE CATEGORY GRANT Roof -Roof Insulation
€250
Wall -Cavity wall insulation
€400
-Internal Wall Dry-Lining
€2,500
-External wall insulation
€4,000
Heating Controls -High Efficiency Gas or Oil-fired Boiler with Heating Controls Upgrade
€700
-Heating Controls Upgrade
€500
-BER Assessment A “Before” works and an “After” works assessment
€200
For a homeowner to qualify for the €200 BER grant they must undertake a BER before commencing any measures AND a subsequent BER once they are completed. The other grants may still be obtained even if a BER has not been done. A BER is required before a property can be offered for sale or rental. It’s valid for 10 years from the date of issue. With the exception of the initial BER assessment, approval must be 18 | ABOUT BALLINTEER
obtained BEFORE making any purchases, or any work is done. Work commenced or completed before grant approval is obtained is not eligible for grant assistance. The initial grant application must be for at least €500 (excluding BER support). The works MUST be carried out by a contractor registered with SEI. SEI is currently inviting contractors to register with them. Once this is done the scheme will be open for applications. In the meantime you can start to think about the type of work you might like to do. Getting a “Before” BER for your home should help identify what would be most helpful. A BER can only be done by a registered BER assessor. You will find my name on the list of registered assessors available on the SEI website: www.sei.ie/BER. In instances of financial difficulty I would be happy to provide a reduced cost service. Grants are only payable when measures are completed in full compliance with the scheme’s Terms and Conditions, and the contractor has been paid by the homeowner. The steps involved in getting a grant payment are: APPLICATION -> APPROVAL -> MEASURES COMPLETED -> CONTRACTOR PAID & RECEIPT ISSUED-> GRANT CLAIMED The grant will not reimburse more than the actual cost of the qualifying works. Beware of entering into high interest credit arrangements to finance these works as payment of grants may be delayed by administrative issues. If you wish to register your interest in the scheme then simply email:hes@sei.ie or phone 1850 927 000. Registered homeowners will be notified as soon as the scheme is opened for applications. More detailed information may be obtained from: www.sei.ie/hes, or by ringing me at 087-279 9131.

I have the largest collection of L&H books in the British Isles and collect all sorts of other related memorabilia including original studio scripts, autographs and films etc. I've met Stan Laurels' great-granddaughter and spoken to his daughter Lois, who still lives in Hollywood. Our club is part of the worldwide ‘Sons of the Desert’ which is the name given to the club by Stan Laurel who wanted a fun thing rather than a fan club. Each Chapter of the Sons is named after one of their 106 movies and we are the ‘Jitterbugs Tent’ named after the 1942 film of the same name.

Did you know that the Irish Laurel and Hardy Society have their headquarters in Dublin 16? This year, we celebrate our 10th birthday and have an enthusiastic membership of over 60 who meet regularly and watch movies and have a laugh. “Hardy’s Bar” in the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire is the venue for our gettogethers. Stan & Ollie stayed there in 1953 when they visited Dublin to play at The Olympia Theatre. Oliver Hardy was often seen in the bar of the hotel and following the recent refurbishment, they honoured their famous past guest by naming the new bar after him. Over 100 delegates from all over the world came for a weekend of fun and trivia swapping. We had three themed nights (all based around Stan and Ollie), visited the Olympia Theatre and sang Laurel and Hardy songs en route on the LUAS! ABOUT FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
Avoid A Holy Expense! We all know that Holy Communions and Confirmations can turn into expensive events – money worries can stop you enjoying this special day. How can you avoid this? Make a list of all you might need to buy . Try to estimate the cost of each item – be realistic – check the prices. Try to find ways to keep these costs to a minimum – would you consider using an outfit from a family member? Check which shops have sales of last season’s designs. Add up the total cost. Ask yourself is it realistic. Check if you might be eligible for some help through a Communion / Confirmation Grant from your local CWO (Health Board). Once you’ve finally agreed on the cost, consider ways you might pay for it.

If you feel you have no option other than to borrow, please consider how much you can afford to repay each week. ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE
Hay Fever & Acupuncture by Juliette O’Grady
Hay Fever is the name given to pollen allergy. It is also called seasonal allergic rhinitis or “pollinosis”. It is a chronic inflammation of the nose, throat and sinuses and is caused by pollens in the air. Depending on the season, it has different sources: Spring: Trees, Summer: Grass, Autumn: weeds. Off seasons allergies can also be caused by dust, mould or animals. The usual over-the-counter treatments for hay fever are anti-histaminics (histamine is released by the cells in the patients body while in contact with pollens). They do not solve the problem of under-lying sensitivity. And, aside from the side-effects of these drugs (drowsiness, dryness of throat and nose walls ), they will become less and less efficient after a month of regular usage. Acupuncture can help with hayfever on two levels : First of all by relieving the patients symptoms i.e. runny nose, red itchy eyes,
TO ADVERTISE TELEPHONE 49 9 3022
headaches and sinuses congestions. Acupuncture treatments also have the benefits of treating hayfever on a deeper lever by strenghtening the immune system of the patient and allowing a natural desensitisation without injections. It is advisable to start a treatment well in advance of the pollen season. Three sessions are usually recommended, using a combination of acupuncture and auriculo therapy (ear needling). You will then be finally able to fully enjoy Spring!! Juliette trained with Dr Vincent Carroll (western medical doctor) at Lansdowne College of Acupuncture and Complementary Medicine. In addition to holding a diploma in Acupuncture and Certification in Clinical Medicine, Juliette is also a Reiki Master and an ITEC qualified massage therapist.

The play opens after the death of a flawed patriarch. As his family gathers in Dublin for his wake, the reunion reveals that the family has some unusual skeletons in the closets, the consequences are both disturbing and comic. The play has recently been turned into a movie with Malcolm McDowell (of Clockwork Orange fame) playing the role of the central, albeit recently deceased, character. ABOUT STYLE
Spring Clean Your Wardrobe by Janice Coyne, Style Consultant in an easy to reach place. It’s also a really good idea to use shoe-trees for all shoes as these help them keep their shape and prolongs their life. Scented wooden balls for the inside of the shoes will also keep them smelling fresh as well as discouraging moths.
With spring just around the corner (yes I know we had snow this year and it’s still very cold) it’s good to look ahead in anticipation of longer nights and brighter days. Along with realising that the windows really do need to be cleaned it’s good to take a long look in the wardrobe and decide to do a clear out. Where to start? How to get organised? Begin by emptying the clothes onto your bed and arrange in piles of trousers, skirts, jackets etc. List what you have and then review if you have too many of one thing and not enough of another. For instance – 8 pairs of trousers and they’re all black!
Should you decide that you’re not really wearing most of the clothes you’ve just taken out of your wardrobe then help is at hand to identify why that is. Getting the most out of your wardrobe and discovering new ways to create outfits using the clothes you already own is my speciality. It is even more important nowadays to ensure that anything we spend on new clothes is for items that work and will provide good value on a “cost per wear” basis. In addition to doing wardrobe workouts I also offer a personal shopping service. With Mother’s day on the horizon and Easter following closely behind perhaps a gift voucher would be welcomed by someone you love? So, have fun with that therapeutic wardrobe clear out, ladies!
Are you holding onto things because they need minor alterations or specialist treatments? Now is a good time to deal with them, taking up hems, sewing on buttons or arranging to drop items into the dry cleaners. I would recommend replacing wire hangers with wooden or plastic rigid ones that support your clothes properly, as over time wire hangers will fail to do this. The best hangers for knitwear are padded fabric ones. All knitwear should be cleaned before being stored as moths love clothes that are not perfectly fresh! Once you have your wardrobe emptied, give it a quick wipe down or vacuum and you’re set to arrange it in a more accessible way. Decide whether to rearrange your clothes back in your wardrobe by category or outfit i.e. all blouses together in one area or trousers, blouse and jacket all on one hanger for easier selection as this can really save you time in the morning rush. If you keep your shoes in your wardrobe it may be worthwhile investing in clear shoe boxes. These allow you to identify your shoes easily. Alternatively long hanging shoe holders can allow for the storage of about a dozen pairs 42 | ABOUT BALLINTEER
