ABOUT COMMUNITY RADIO
Wanna be a Radio Star? What have Mundy, Craig Doyle, John Spillane and Orla Barry got in common? Well, they all got their broadcasting break on your very own community radio station Dublin South 93.9FM.
by Fiona Tuomey While radio experience would be an asset, it is not necessary as training in broadcasting skills will be provided. We are primarily looking for volunteers who are active in the community.” So how is all of this funded? “Unfortunately, there is no funding. We rely almost entirely on volunteers and goodwill. We have almost 70 volunteers and 5 FAS funded employees. We do get some income from advertising and sponsorship.” So, if you fancy yourself as the next Ray DArcy or just want to promote your activity in the community, get in touch with Dublin South 93.9FM, they will be delighted to hear from you. In an age where volunteers may be thin on the ground, it is to the credit of Mike Purcell, Brendan Hickey and the many volunteers who have been involved over the years,
The station itself is based in brand new, state-of-the-art studios, on the top floor of the Dundrum Town Centre. They have a fantastic setup which is available to the entire community. So, what is the aim of Dublin South 93.9FM? I spoke with engineer and long-term volutneer Mike Purcell. Mike told me “the aim of Dublin South FM is to improve the quality of life for the local community, by facilitating local peole and voluntary groups in the promotion of their activity on air. We do this by providing programmes with a broad spread of local interest, cultural, information and entertainment. We broadcast daily from 4pm to 9pm, seven days a week.” So, if you are you interested in radio, Dublin South FM Community Radio are looking for volunteers with an interest in the following areas: Community Relations & Development; Journalism; Local Sports; Arts; Music; Local History; Social, Cultural and Environmental issues? Mike went on to explain “We need news readers; programme presenters, researchers, continunity announcers; sound engineers and any other radio skills. 6 | ABOUT KNOCKYLON
that they have kept Dublin South 93.9FM on air. Community radio is a valuable resource, but it depends on your support. You can contact the station on 296 0939 or just drop into the studios on the 5th floor of the Dundrum Town Centre between noon and 3pm, Monday to Friday. You can also email them on dublinsouthfm@eircom.net and check out the website on www.freewebs.com/dublinsouthfm

ABOUT WINE
Choosing Wine for the Festive Season With the festive season fast approaching let me help remove any stress from your wine-buying at this busy time with a few suggestions on some really delicious wines to enjoy when gathered together with your family and friends. Wines that will best complement all the wonderful food you have planned. Mitchells have the perfect pre-dinner wine for your guests, the Bortolomiol Prosecco at €10.95 sparkling, light and refreshing and hitting just the right note. Another ideal white would be Mitchells Sauvingnon Blanc at €9.95, a firm favourite with out customers. For Sherry lovers we have the full range of the highly recommended Lustau sherries to suit all tastes from €16.95. For those preferring red, there is Mitchells Claret, a medium-bodied Bordeaux with lots of ripe fruit and pleasant aromas of spice and vanilla at €11.50. Another attractive medium-bodied red is Castel Firmian Merlot from Italy at €11.95. For the special Christmas Day lunch I propose two options in white that will stand up to the strong flavours of turkey and ham – a stunning 1er Cru Chablis by Denis Race at €24.50 and great value for what is an exceptional wine – or you could go for a quality Sancerre by Raimbault Pineau at €17.95. If serving smoked salmon or goat’s cheese this is a match made in heaven. For the red wine I suggest a French Rhone – Chateau Neuf De Pape Grand Veneur (€24.95) – which is showing layers of ripe fruit and lots of complexity. Alternatively, go for the stunning Naughtons Flight Shiraz from South Africa at €19.95. Be sure to decant the Shiraz two hours before serving and I promise you a memorable experience. Enjoy with your Christmas pudding a nicely chilled glass of Mitchells Gold from Bordeaux at €15.50 – an international award winner, displaying exotic fruits, orange and honey in abundance. After lunch try our range of Barao de Vilar Ports from €15.50. For the New Year celebrations, Montaudon Reserve Premier Champagne at €32.95 is hard to beat. 10 | ABOUT KNOCKYLON

Chocolate Cranberry Sponge As we head towards Christmas, what could be nicer than a delicious chocolate sponge with a festive flavour! Ingredients: 4 tbsp unsalted butter, plus 1tsp extra for greasing 4tbsp dark brown sugar, plus 2tsp extra for sprinkling 85g/30z cranberries, thawed if frozen 1 large cooking apple 2eggs, lightly beaten 85g/30x self raising flour 3tbsp cocoa powder Sauce: 175g/6oz dark chocolate broken into pieces 400ml/14floz evaporated milk (can buy in supermarket) 1tsp vanilla essence ½ tsp almond essence
around the bowl, put a plate on top and holding both together invert. Serve with the sauce and enjoy!
Method: Grease a 1.25 litre/2 pint pudding bowl, sprinkle with brown sugar to coat the sides and tip out any excess. Put the cranberries in a bowl. Peel, core and dice the apple and mix with the cranberries. Put the fruit in the prepared pudding bowl. Place the butter, brown sugar and eggs in a large bowl. Sieve the flour and cocoa and beat well until thoroughly mixed. Pour the mixture into the bowl on top of the fruit, cover the top with tinfoil and tie with string. Steam for about 1 hour, until risen, topping up with boiling water if necessary. Meanwhile, to make the sauce, put the dark chocolate and milk in the top of a heatproof bowl set over a pot of simmering water. Stir until the chocolate has melted, remove from the heat. Whisk in the vanilla and almond essences and continue to beat until the sauce is thick and smooth. Remove the pudding from the heat and discard the foil. Run a round-bladed knife 12 | ABOUT KNOCKYLON

ABOUT HOUSEKEEPING
Tips from the Domestic Goddess - Table Settings Sometimes only a formal dinner party is good enough - set your table beautifully with these handy hints from the Domestic Goddess... =First impressions count: the table is on display before any food is served. Remember you are not just setting the table, you are setting the mood! =A white linen table cloth: this is the preferred option, but not obligatory. =Table decorations: a floral centrepiece should be beautiful but understated, and no more than 5 high. If using candles, these should be symmetrically placed but not at eye-level!
14 | ABOUT KNOCKYLON
=Utensils or silverware: these should be lined up evenly from their bottoms, about half an inch away from the plate. Knives should have their cutting edge facing towards the plate. Cutlery is used in order from the outside in. =Napkins: these can either be placed on the plate, to the left of the forks, or inside a glass. =Glasses: the largest glass is for water and should be placed just above the knife. The wine glasses are placed to the right of this, with the larger bowled glass for red wine and the narrower bowled glass for white. =Seating plan: Place-cards can be useful. Don’t be afraid to break up couples or friends and remember, who sits opposite whom is more important than who sits next to whom.

St Colmcille’s National Junior & Senior National School, Knocklyon The following is a copy of my letter to the Minister for Education & Science regarding the Re-Development plans for St Colmcille’s Primary School, Knocklyon. I am continuing to make every possible effort to ensure that this project proceeds to planning permission stage without delay. Mr. Batt O’Keeffe TD Minister for Education & Science October 16th 2008 Dear Minister, I am writing to you on behalf of St Colmcille’s JNS & SNS, Knocklyon which is in my constituency. The Principals and Chairperson of the Board of Management of these schools wrote to you recently seeking a meeting with you to discuss the progress of the Building Re-Development plans for the school. I note that you have secured a significant increase in Capital Spending for the School Building Programme for 2009 and it is in this context that I am writing on behalf of the parents, teachers and pupils of the school, as well as the wider Knocklyon Community. St. Colmcille’s Building Project received Stage 3 approval from your department in November 2007. Despite numerous requests from school management and local public representatives for sanction to proceed with an application for planning, and in spite of considerable efforts at local and community level to facilitate this complex process, the project has been stalled since that time. St. Colmcille’s houses 1400 pupils at present, making it easily the largest Primary School in Ireland. 500 of these pupils are housed in sub-standard, pre-fabricated accommodation the majority of which is twenty-five years old and well past a fit-for-use state. The school is located in a rapidly expanding area and already struggles to meet the existing demand for junior infant places (260 applicants for 168 places). I am requesting that a meeting be granted with Board of Management representatives, as a matter of urgency. Such a meeting would undoubtedly persuade you of the necessity of granting the school permission to move to the stage of formally applying for planning permission. I look forward to your favourable response. Sincerely, Cllr. John Lahart

Cyberbullying Safety tips for kids 1. Respect others – be careful about what you say and send. It could be made public very quickly. 2. Keep your passwords to yourself. 3. Block the bully – learn how to block or report someone who is behaving badly. 4. Don’t ever retaliate or reply.
Nearly one in four children and teenagers in Ireland claim to have been on the receiving end of cyberbullying. It’s a growing issue that is having a profound impact on the lives of the victims. Cyberbullying is when the perpetrator uses technology – usually mobile phones and the internet – to deliberately upset someone else. It can range from rude texts and nasty calls to posting nasty comments and humiliating pictures/video-footage on social networking sites. In same cases, cyberbullies will go as far as sending death threats to the victims and their families.
Will Gardner, deputy chief executive of the UK internet safety group, Childnet, says that cyberbullying can often be worse than traditional bullying. Victims can be reached 24/7, even in the relative safety of their own homes; humiliating and intimidating messages can be sent out to a wide audience almost instantly; and in many cases, the bully remains anonymous. “This is a big issue,” he says. “It does happen. It’s unacceptable. But there are things we can do to tackle it.” For parents, one of the first things to do is get online. Many of us are hesitant to do this, because our kids seem so much more up to speed when it comes to technology, and we don’t know where to start. “It’s really important for parents to get involved. There is good information out there. The key thing is to start a conversation with your children.” 18 | ABOUT KNOCKYLON
Save the evidence. Keep a record of offensive texts, emails or online conversations. Make sure you tell (a) a trusted adult; (b) your service provider; (c) your school. Once you’ve talked to your young people about these things, keep in touch with what they are doing on the internet and how they’re using their mobile phones. Check out in-built safety devices on social networking sites, and work out in advance how you will respond if you discover your child is the victim of cyberbullying. The first task was easy. Janice asked me to take out the items which I liked to wear. Most of these items were evening wear - or more formal wear. Items which I bought for special occasions, weddings, etc. Also, in this category were some tops and jeans which I really love. What this process did was reveal a pattern in my purchases and my own style. Funningly enough, I didn’t think I had one, until I started to really look at the items I loved. Feminine, a bit funky and an inverted triangle (my shape) was Janice’s verdict - I felt better about my wardbrobe already! Next, the items I have hanging in the wardbrobe which I don’t wear. ABOUT BEFORE YOU SLEEP….
Highlighting - new children’s author Benji Bennett “Before you Sleep” is a beautifully illustrated and heartfelt children’s bedtime book from new children’s writer Benji Bennett. Inspired by the sudden death of his son Adam in August 14th 2007 (aged 4), writer Benji Bennett, supporting the Barretstown Camp for Sick Children, has created a children’s book which communicates Adam’s profound message to parents on the importance of expressing their love with their children in this increasingly stressful and busy world.
Hospitals take care of the physical effect of serious illness; Barretstown helps heal the emotional scars. This book has awarded the Bennett family the strength to live through the pain of their loss and celebrate Adam’s life and spread his message. Benji Bennett and his family also celebrated the miracle of life with the birth in July of Adam’s very special sister, Molly. The Bennett’s are very aware as parents that nothing will ever replace Adam but they have a strong feeling that “Adam and Molly passed each other on the way.” Benji hopes that in this very busy world his book will give parents the opportunity to tell their children they love them just before they go to sleep each night
At the launch of ‘ Before You Sleep’ , author Benji Bennett with his eldest son Harry and TV3’ s Lorraine Keane
“Before You Sleep” touches magically on many themes and emotions to excite the child’s imagination and instil a message of undying love and friendship between the parent and child. Such themes and emotions include fun, adventure, happiness, love, fantasy, wonder, security, awe, magic, friendship and companionship all of which are central to the storyline. The production of this book not only contains a simple message of love and friendship but is also a source of comfort and strength to the writer and his family who have endured a tragic loss of their innocent, loving and happy angel Adam. The Bennett family share a special connection with the Barretstown Children Charity which has helped them over the last year deal with their grief and loss. Founded by Paul Newman in 1984 Barretstown helps heal illness by providing life changing programmes of therapeutic recreation with the aim to rebuild their confidence, trust and self esteem. 24 | ABOUT KNOCKYLON

ABOUT THE GARDEN
Round the Garden at Christmas When I was a child just one family on our street strung a single strand of multi-colour fairy lights from a large fire tree in their front garden. Every year, the whole street turned out see Mrs Doherty’s illuminations, as we called them! How times change! Now everyone is at it and there are decorations to suit every pocket. But, what if you are a garden decoration virgin? How do you make it look good? It’s tricky when a lot of what is on offer is so tacky. I would suggest that you start with a theme. My suggested themes for novices would be natural, classy or toytown.
by Tom Percy sleigh and reindeer? Then sue strings of multicoloured lights around the house and trees to set it off. A wreath of sweets and sugar canes on the front door would complet the effect. ....And if you haven’t got a garden? Even window boxes and balconies can be dressed in a festive manner. Simply use the suggested themes but scale them down. Red and gold baubles look great wired into green garlands. Or, perhaps you could invest in an outdoor tree and sparkly lights for your balcony. The advantage of an apartment is that any decorations are unlikely to be stolen if they are three floors up!
Natural: Gather lots of greenery: everygreen clippings from your garden, ivy or Christmas tree cuttings. Wire them onto lengths of rope and add colour with ribbons, sprayed pine cones and berries (you can buy artificial ones if the birds have been busy). Drape them over porches and hedges and around fences. Candles look great providing they are sheltered in jam jars, which can be left plain or painted with glass paint from a craft shop. Tin cans also make nice candle holders. Fill them with water, freeze them, then punch a pattern of holes in the side with a hammer and different sized nails.
Classy: Neither too much or too little. Keep it simple with twinkling white lights strung around the front of the house and any garden trees, front and back. A simple but huge holly wreath on the door adds the finishing touch.
Toytown: This does not have to be tacky. The trick is to buy one huge, really good quality, decoration for your front or back garden. Perhaps Santa’s 30 | ABOUT KNOCKYLON
Finally, remember most neighbours are grateful for the ‘less is more’ approach to front garden decorations. However, if you do have the time, money and understanding people next door then by all means go for it! Just make sure that they are all down by 6th January. Nothing say ‘naff’ quite like fairy lights still flickering in February!

ABOUT ANGEL HEALING
Healing from Within The last decade has seen a huge shift towards the heavens, the answers to the ever increasing problems that are facing people within today's society. Healing from within, with the Divine assistance from the Celestial Beings of Light and Love, i.e. Angels, is attracting a huge following from all walks of life.
by Margaret Noctor
Sitting in Circle, to tune into and receive the Healing Stream of love and light is proving to be a popular and gently invigorating way to spend an evening. People coming away from a session of healing, speak of a feeling of peaceful and ambient calm. A sense of Spiritual elation and a feeling of oneness with the Heavens, is the prescription given by Colette Lumsden, Master Teacher of Angels and Ascension and Spiritual Healer.

There are countless documented reports of Angels appearing to people of all walks of life, and indeed, all and every religious denomination. True Angels of God are not harbingers of negative news, rather, they are willing Guides, assisting us to attain our life's purpose through absolute, unconditional love and light. ''Angels are ready and awaiting our call to assist us and show us the way forward, in all aspects of our lives. Heaven wants us to be happy and content in all that we do and feel” said Collectte. “Asking for this blessing is just a thought away, although the people I have 32 | ABOUT KNOCKYLON

ABOUT MORTGAGES
Equity Release Schemes (Part 2) Equity is the market value of your home minus any mortgage on the property. Equity Release Schemes are aimed at older homeowners and are designed to enable you to turn some of the value of your home into cash, either a lump sum or a regular extra income. It is important to exercise extreme caution when considering committing to an Equity Release scheme. The terms and conditions of the schemes are complicated and can be difficult to understand. They are aimed at older homeowners, some of whom may be vulnerable. It is essential to get independent financial and legal advice and to be sure you understand completely the terms of any scheme you may be considering. In Part 1, I discussed some of the general rules applicable to Equity Release Schemes and explained one of the two available schemes, Lifetime Mortgage. The other type of Equity Release Scheme currently being marketed in Ireland is the Home Reversion Scheme. A Home Reversion means you are selling a percentage of your home for a lump sum. You will get much less than the market value of the percentage you sell (the older you are when you start the scheme the bigger the lump sum). You can continue to live in your home for the rest of your life. Home Reversion Scheme contracts are either fixed-share or variable-share. A fixed share contract means you are paid a lump sum for a fixed share of your home. The percentage you own and the percentage owned by the company are fixed and cannot change no matter how long you live or how much your property is worth in the future. With a 38 | ABOUT KNOCKYLON
by Alan Shatter TD variable-share contract you get a bigger lump sum at the start but the percentage owned by the company increases every year without you getting any more payments. The longer you live the less of your property you will own. In general, the home reversion scheme will end when you move permanently out of your home (or, depending on the scheme, when you move out for more than a specified number of months) or you sell your home or you die, whichever happens first. You cannot change or reverse this kind of contract. You may, however, through negotiation with the home reversion company, be able buy back the share you sold to them or sell your home to enable you to cash in the share of your home you still own. One of the dangers of releasing equity from your home is you may need the value of your home for nursing home fees or other expenses in the future. Before you commit to an Equity Release scheme, it might be wise to consider other ways of raising money from your home by perhaps renting out a room or downsizing to a smaller property. Other options include transferring ownership of your home to a family member who would provide you money either in a lump sum or in instalments and a “life interest which would give you the right to live in the property for life. Upon your death possession of your home then passes to the family member who owns it. The impact of Home Equity Schemes on a persons freedom to dispose of their home in their will to be discussed in Part 3 Alan Shatter TD represents Dublin South constituency on behalf of Fine Gael.
