Ballyboden St Enda’ s
•Congratulations to Ballyboden’ s Senior Hurling team who were back-to-back winners of the Dublin senior Hurling Championsips (‘ 07/’ 08) and Lenister Senior Hurling Finalists in 2008. •Congratulations to Ballyboden’ s Ladies Football Team who have won nine Dublin Championships on the trot; five Leinster Championships and two All Ireland Finals. •Finally to the Camogie team, who won the Leinster Final in 2008 To mark these achievements I arranged for a Civic reception to be held in County Hall in February. My thanks to Council officials and the Mayor for facilitating this reception.
Knocklyon Utd
I am delighted that the Council has rowed back on its decision to remove a playing pitch from use by Knocklyon Utd FC at Ballycullen. I have strongly supported the club in this. The decision by the Council to grant temporary use of a second pitch at Ballycullen is just a first step as far as I am concerned. The next step is to ensure that Knocklyon Utd secures permanent use of a second full pitch at Ballycullen and I will continue to do my best to ensure that this happens.

ABOUT GIDDY STUDIOS
National prominence for local pottery painting studio!
Giddy Studios, Rathfarnham’s pottery painting studio, came to national prominence recently when it featured recently on RTE’s Tubridy Tonight. The show’s blind date couple went to Giddy Studios to paint their interpretation of each other on pottery plates. “The guys were absolutely brilliant and really got into it’, according to owner Helena Dilleen. “It’s clear that pottery painting really is suitable to all ages and personalities. Traditionally it would have been seen as a kids activity only but I think the environment has an awful lot to do with who it appeals to’, says Helena. Helena went on to say “The studio is bright, beautiful and to quote a giddy customer, ‘it gives you a lift!’. There are lots of adults who are really interested in the idea as an alternative to going to the pub or out for a pizza. The big question for us was ‘do you need to be creative?’. It can be as easy or as intricate as you wish and we have pieces and design ideas to suit everyone. No matter what people do their pieces come out brilliantly after being glazed and fired. And it’s something they’ll have forever”. 6 | ABOUT KNOCKYLON
When chatting to Helena she was waiting on a group of 14 adults to arrive for a girls night out and the previous Thursday the studio served over thirty pottery painters. Giddy has also a number of corporate groups for a bit of ‘team building’, which has gone down a storm. Opening hours in the evening are by appointment, so call in advance to book. Everyone can bring their own tipple - beer, wine, bubbles. Helena told me that Hen painting parties are going down brilliantly, with some groups designing the ‘bride-to-be’ dinner service and signature plates for their wedding day - the creation of giddy heirlooms! According to Carl, “The feedback to date has been fantastic! It’s free and parents love the idea of being able to find everything in one site from viewing clips of childrens movie releases to exploring family venues to party planning ideas. Round the Garden in March March is a guessing game in the garden. Will it warm up soon? Will it stay warm? Will the rains start/stop? About the only thing we can count on is that March too shall pass. So go ahead and push the envelope, but keep the row covers handy. Everyone should have their seeds started, their trees and shrubs pruned and their tools ready to go. After that, the most important thing is to have patience. It’s tempting to take advantage of warm days, but spring gets the last word in the garden. Here are some March gardening tips to take with a spoonful of judgement.
by Tom Percy
· Start feeding houseplants again. Repot, if necessary. · Avoid walking on wet soil in the garden · Hardy annuals can go out even before last expected frost · Wait until the soil warms and dries before planting summer bulbs, tubers, etc. · Perennial vegetables and fruits can be planted once danger of frost has passed and the ground is workable · Prune roses before the buds break · Plant shrubs when the ground warms

ABOUT COMPLEMENTARY HEALTH THERAPY
Stress is a Fact of LIfe! by Pauline McDermott
Stress is a fact of life. We need it. Stress affects us one way or another whether we like it or not. But, instead of stress controlling us, we can control stress and the negative effects it has on us. We can’t control everything that happens either to ourselves or our loved ones so it’s vitally important that we manage ourselves, our reactions to what happens and recognising the signs and symptoms of stress can be the start in helping us to take back control. Stress in small doses and in the short time can be positive for us, it can gives us drive, focus and determination. It’s when stress continues into the long term, gradually creeping up on us becoming constant, that the effects start to show.It can be very subtle, but stress is a silent killer and has been attributed to the cause or contributory factor in many diseases.
I have many years experience working with clients on a one-to-one basis, working with groups and teaching students of complementary health and through my work in Hypnotherapy & Psychotherapy, Shiatsu, Bio-Energy Healing and Relaxation and Stress Management offers the client, student and group a choice of treatments best suited to them and their needs. My approach is to help the client deal with the immediate symptoms of stress and teaching them different skills so the client themselves goes away easily able to manage themselves, their stress, their life more effectively. For further information on how you can live a better life today, Call Pauline McDermott on 085 785 4013.
So what can we do?Firstly, we need to know the signs, we can’t change anything if we’re not even aware of it. Signs and symptoms are wide ranging and can be misinterpreted. Everyone is different and will be affected differently. Our body is a great messenger, we just need to be prepared to listen to what it’s telling us. When we experience pain it’s our body’s way of telling us to take note. It’s far too easy to just brush aches and pains off and say it’s just stress, but we need to heed to signs that our body is ill at ease. Signs such as headaches, migraine, I.B.S. (irritable bowel syndrome),indigestion, eczema, asthma, panic attacks, fear and phobias, M.E. chronic tiredness, depression, and many other conditions far too many to list, are caused or worsened by stress.

ABOUT FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
Avoid A Holy Expense! We all know that Holy Communions and Confirmations can turn into expensive events – money worries can stop you enjoying this special day. How can you avoid this? Make a list of all you might need to buy . Try to estimate the cost of each item – be realistic – check the prices. Try to find ways to keep these costs to a minimum – would you consider using an outfit from a family member? Check which shops have sales of last season’s designs. Add up the total cost. Ask yourself is it realistic. Check if you might be eligible for some help through a Communion / Confirmation Grant from your local CWO (Health Board). Once you’ve finally agreed on the cost, consider ways you might pay for it.

ABOUT THE HOME ENERGY SAVING GRANT SCHEME
Do Your Bit to Reduce Global Warming! by Philip Thompson – Registered BER Assessor
The government recently announced initial details of a €100 million grant scheme designed to assist homeowners making their homes more energy efficient. The obvious benefit to availing of this scheme is a warmer home, costing less money to heat, and having a better BER rating. Dry-lining walls has the additional benefit of giving a new surface ready for painting. If a home also needs rewiring, dry-lining can cover up many of the new wires, reducing the amount of dust and cost involved. The grant scheme is open to all owners of existing homes in the state, built before 2006. Owners of multiple properties may make a separate application for each property. Fixed grants will be available towards reimbursing some of the cost of the following measures: MEASURE CATEGORY GRANT Roof -Roof Insulation
€250
Wall -Cavity wall insulation
€400
-Internal Wall Dry-Lining
€2,500
-External wall insulation
€4,000
Heating Controls -High Efficiency Gas or Oil-fired Boiler with Heating Controls Upgrade
€700
-Heating Controls Upgrade
€500
-BER Assessment A “Before” works and an “After” works assessment
€200
For a homeowner to qualify for the €200 BER grant they must undertake a BER before commencing any measures AND a subsequent BER once they are completed. The other grants may still be obtained even if a BER has not been done. A BER is required before a property can be offered for sale or rental. It’s valid for 10 years from the date of issue. With the exception of the initial BER assessment, approval must be 20 | ABOUT KNOCKYLON
obtained BEFORE making any purchases, or any work is done. Work commenced or completed before grant approval is obtained is not eligible for grant assistance. The initial grant application must be for at least €500 (excluding BER support). The works MUST be carried out by a contractor registered with SEI. SEI is currently inviting contractors to register with them. Once this is done the scheme will be open for applications. In the meantime you can start to think about the type of work you might like to do. Getting a “Before” BER for your home should help identify what would be most helpful. A BER can only be done by a registered BER assessor. You will find my name on the list of registered assessors available on the SEI website: www.sei.ie/BER. In instances of financial difficulty I would be happy to provide a reduced cost service. Grants are only payable when measures are completed in full compliance with the scheme’s Terms and Conditions, and the contractor has been paid by the homeowner. The steps involved in getting a grant payment are: APPLICATION -> APPROVAL -> MEASURES COMPLETED -> CONTRACTOR PAID & RECEIPT ISSUED-> GRANT CLAIMED The grant will not reimburse more than the actual cost of the qualifying works. Beware of entering into high interest credit arrangements to finance these works as payment of grants may be delayed by administrative issues. If you wish to register your interest in the scheme then simply email:hes@sei.ie or phone 1850 927 000. Registered homeowners will be notified as soon as the scheme is opened for applications. More detailed information may be obtained from: www.sei.ie/hes, or by ringing me at 087-279 9131.

ABOUT VOICE COACHING
One True Voice! – Local Voice Coach Timara Galassi Rathfarnham resident Timara Galassi has been a professional vocal coach, musician and speech coach for over twenty years. She has successfully developed and trained professionals and amateurs, using a unique and thought provoking approach.
by Fiona Tuomey
has noticed over the years that most people do not breathe properly.
But is voice coaching useful outside of the singing profession? “Absolutely! We use our voices every day and most people speak or sing from their mid chest area or throat, causing vocal tension and strain. As human beings, one of our gifts is that of communication and natural expression. You may be surprised at how many people have a limited ability in using their voice with ease.”
“Without breath we cannot live, so restricted breathing due to tension, nerves or poor confidence will have huge impact on the quality of your voice. Diaphragmatic breathing is the correct way to breathe. We have become conditioned over the years and get accustomed to bad habits and over time we lose the natural sound quality of our original voice.” “In this fast paced world, speaking and singing, have taken on new meaning. Most people will admit that singing or speaking in public would embarrass them or make them feel very uncomfortable and nervous. It is so important to express one-self effortlessly and naturally”. Timara explained Timara concluded “Working through music, self awareness and vocal technique can improve the quality of your voice dramatically. As the eyes are the windows of the soul, the voice is most certainly the sound.”
Timara’s coaching technique works for those who also wish to become fluent in public speaking. She
You can contact Timara on 087 239 7003 or email timara.galassi@gmail.com
According to Timara “you don’t have to be incredibly talented to sing well. Everyone can sing to some degree and with the approach I take, improvement can be recognised almost immediately. Not only is singing beneficial for easing stress, it is also a great therapy for gaining confidence and building self esteem.”

ARIES
SCORPIO
Welcome to your personal springtime Aries. All things are new to you now. This is not in any way a bad thing, rather to know that this is the making of you, your love bonds and cash situations.
Soul mating is on the cards for you Scorpio. A visit overseas is the catalyst to your finding contentment in love. Two rings exchanged by one another is the physical sign of eternal commitment.
TAURUS
SAGITTARIUS
You are blessed with an offer you cannot refuse, but knowing you, you will encounter an obstacle. You can now say a big yes to a proposition which may lead to you re-kindling a once lost relationship.
A little time to find out just how much a “J” name can mean to you. At this specific time you are truly blessed in so many areas of your life. Your finances are set to improve as is your love life.
GEMINI
CAPRICORN
Gemini, you find yourselves involved in explorative pursuits, especially if this has anything to do with reincarnation, spirituality or life on other planets. Don’t fret about love. Value yourself more and others will follow suit.
Ace of pentacles leads you from insecurity to a more ambient state. Worrying about cash or material possessions is a futile exercise. A period of rest allows you find the real you. A happier camper you cannot be.
CANCER
AQUARIUS
Planning those trips to a sunnier clime is the way to go Cancer. Legal paperwork needs attention now to avoid complications later. An old chapel attracts you. Cards advise that you carve out a new beginning there.
What you have always wanted turns up at last, but do you want or indeed need this person back in your life? You may well have grown up and away from this. Cards speak of opportunities and diverse choice.
LEO
PISCES
For some, the wearing of a uniform is the answer to your dilemma. Paramedic perhaps? Love is so important to you Leo. Cards advise that you make the move towards a happy and harmonious settlement.
You are now ready to take up a new and entirely different challenge. You always knew you were born for something special and now is time to go for it. Books and computer discs are abundant in this spread.
VIRGO A second time around romance is in the offing. Life is about choices and the choice you make regarding love is you following your heart for once. An age gap is not a problem. Your unnecessary fears are!
LIBRA Cards advise that you take up a walking exercise. A meeting whilst on one of your outings may lead to the dream partnership you read about in novels. You need to trust more in the heavens when asking for favours.

Scouting in South Dublin Supports DSPCA A number of Scout Groups in South Dublin from the youth organisation Scouting Ireland celebrated Scouting’s Founders Day on February 22nd by raising funds to support the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Founders Day, a worldwide event, marks the date when the 30 million member Scouting Movement was founded by Robert Baden Powell. This year is the 102nd anniversary of the movement, which has a membership of over 35,000 in Ireland. Over three hundred young people aged from six to nineteen converged on Larch hill, a scouting campsite near Marlay Park, to take part in activities and skills training. The scouts were from local groups in Mount Merrion, Kilmacud, Balally, Kilternan, Ballinteer, Dundrum and Rathfarnham and TO ADVERTISE TELEPHONE 49 9 3022
money raised on the day were donated to the DSPCA for their local centre in Rathfarnham, recently damaged by fire. Commenting on the event, Organiser Lyndsey Rankin said “Scouts are well known for their commitment to the environment and to protecting nature. Part of this is an interest in animals and their welfare and we are pleased to help in a small way with the DSPCA’s efforts to get back on track at their centre in Rathfarnham”. Scouting Ireland is Irelands largest youth organisation, open to boys & girls, men & women. It has 35,000 members across 32 counties. It was formed when the two long established Irish Scout Associations, Scouting Ireland CSI and Scouting Ireland SAI joined to form a new association in 2004. ABOUT KNOCKYLON | 39
ABOUT LIFE COACHING
What Do You Want Out Of 2009? by Orla Doyle, Life Coach
At the start of 2009 we had good intentions, but have they lasted? The urge for change often doesn’t last long enough for you to follow through – the motivation seems to come and go. In the short-term, it’s easier for your life to remain the same, rather than to do anything about it.
Achieve a life long goal or ambition Reduce stress in their lives Get a better work/life balance Change or improve their career Increase their confidence or self-esteem.
But what about the long-term? How many times have had the urge to change, but done nothing about it? How can you ensure that you make the change and stick to it?
Achieve a clearer focus on what you want, why you want it and how you can get it. Bridge the gap between where you are now and where you would like to be. Get the confidence, support and motivation to achieve your goals and make a lasting change to your life.
One way you can do this is employ the services of a personal coach. But what is a personal coach? A personal coach is very similar to a sport’s coach. The latter coaches their athletes to improve, change, and develop so that they can become the best athletes they can be. In an similar vain, a personal coach works in partnership with you, the client, to enable you to improve, change and develop various aspects of your life.
By working with a personal coach, you will:
Personal Coaching will help you identify the changes you want to make in 2009 and ensure that you stick to them.
Coaching works as a partnership. During sessions you will focus on the beliefs and values that are personal to you. Your coach will be there to guide, question and help you get clarity and perspective. Together you will examine different strategies or solutions that you can implement to make changes in your life. Your coach is there to provide you with the time, space, structure and support you need to help you to decide what you want, why you want it and how you can achieve it. People use personal coaching for many reasons, perhaps to:

'Leadership Matters' - Ecumenical Lent Series of Public talks in Rathfarnham Every year during Lent, the group of parishes in Rathfarnham holds a series of public talks to offer our community an opportunity to reflect on serious issues. This year, we have chosen the theme of leadership. Realising that we need leaders in all spheres of life, we decided to give each evening a particular focus. So, on March 5th, we will look at leadership in families. Family therapist, Owen Connolly will speak about the role of parents while Karlin Lillington, technology journalist with the Irish Times, will look at who leads and who follows the Internet generation. On March 12th, we will look at leadership in our communities. Andrew McNeile, consultant to the Church of Ireland House of Bishops will ask whether anybody is listening to the churches while Commandant, Jim Gavin, coach to the Dublin under 21s GAA team, will look at the influence of sport in our communities.
TO ADVERTISE TELEPHONE 49 9 3022
On March 19th, we will look at leadership or the lack of it in business and finance. Professor Ray Kinsella from UCD’s Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business will ask how we can rebuild trust in our banking systems. Redmond Donoghue, chairman of Failte Ireland will ask what makes inspired leaders. On March 26th, our final evening, we will look at leadership in politics. Irish Times journalist, Kathy Sheridan was in Washington D.C for President Obama’s inauguration. She will share her thoughts on leadership. Eamon Ryan (Green Party), Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources will address the topic of leadership in national politics. Admission to the talks is free and this year’s series will be held in the Church of Ireland Church, Rathfarnham Village at 8pm each Thursday in March. Tel: 490 5543 for more details. ABOUT STYLE
Spring Clean Your Wardrobe by Janice Coyne, Style Consultant in an easy to reach place. It’s also a really good idea to use shoe-trees for all shoes as these help them keep their shape and prolongs their life. Scented wooden balls for the inside of the shoes will also keep them smelling fresh as well as discouraging moths.
With spring just around the corner (yes I know we had snow this year and it’s still very cold) it’s good to look ahead in anticipation of longer nights and brighter days. Along with realising that the windows really do need to be cleaned it’s good to take a long look in the wardrobe and decide to do a clear out. Where to start? How to get organised? Begin by emptying the clothes onto your bed and arrange in piles of trousers, skirts, jackets etc. List what you have and then review if you have too many of one thing and not enough of another. For instance – 8 pairs of trousers and they’re all black!
Should you decide that you’re not really wearing most of the clothes you’ve just taken out of your wardrobe then help is at hand to identify why that is. Getting the most out of your wardrobe and discovering new ways to create outfits using the clothes you already own is my speciality. It is even more important nowadays to ensure that anything we spend on new clothes is for items that work and will provide good value on a “cost per wear” basis. In addition to doing wardrobe workouts I also offer a personal shopping service. With Mother’s day on the horizon and Easter following closely behind perhaps a gift voucher would be welcomed by someone you love? So, have fun with that therapeutic wardrobe clear out, ladies!
Are you holding onto things because they need minor alterations or specialist treatments? Now is a good time to deal with them, taking up hems, sewing on buttons or arranging to drop items into the dry cleaners. I would recommend replacing wire hangers with wooden or plastic rigid ones that support your clothes properly, as over time wire hangers will fail to do this. The best hangers for knitwear are padded fabric ones. All knitwear should be cleaned before being stored as moths love clothes that are not perfectly fresh! Once you have your wardrobe emptied, give it a quick wipe down or vacuum and you’re set to arrange it in a more accessible way. Decide whether to rearrange your clothes back in your wardrobe by category or outfit i.e. all blouses together in one area or trousers, blouse and jacket all on one hanger for easier selection as this can really save you time in the morning rush. If you keep your shoes in your wardrobe it may be worthwhile investing in clear shoe boxes. These allow you to identify your shoes easily. Alternatively long hanging shoe holders can allow for the storage of about a dozen pairs 42 | ABOUT KNOCKYLON

ABOUT STARTING OR GROWING A BUSINESS
The South Dublin County Enterprise Board by Ena Coleman
These are challenging times for business – many small companies are hard pressed for cash and tough decisions are being made on a daily basis by owner managers all over the county. South Dublin County Enterprise Board has been helping people start up and grow business in the county since 1993 - over 15 years experience of diverse economic conditions impacting on small enterprise. During that time the Board has helped many entrepreneurs take an idea and nurture it growing it into a solid business and creating valuable employment and wealth in the county. Unfortunately the past year has not been easy. The employment gains of 2007 in businesses supported by South Dublin County Enterprise Board were negated by job losses in 2008, bringing total employment among Enterprise Board clients back to almost exactly the December 2006 levels. Commenting on the losses, Chief Executive Loman O’Byrne said “This has been a very tough year for our clients and their staff. The adjustments they are making are very painful indeed but, in the circumstances, the losses could clearly have been much worse and we look on these figures as showing a strong element of resilience”. Declining demand and increasing costs are the strongest challenges facing owner/managers over the coming year, with short-term business credit, increased price sensitivity among customers and difficulty in getting paid also causing significant concern.
However, we need to see a very clear connection in the short-to-medium term between the business strategy and actual jobs being created on the ground” If you are thinking of starting a business or are already running a business but need some help don’t forget that South Dublin County Enterprise Board have a comprehensive range of supports covering all of the key issues in enterprise development.
Supports include: Business advice Training Mentoring Financial Assistance Networking Enterprise Education in schools / college Promotional events Micro enterprises are defined as those employing 10 or less. The Board also works closely with other agencies to provide a complete range of services. For more information call the South Dublin County Enterprise Board at 01 405 7073 or visit www.sdenterprise.ie. South Dublin County Enterprise Board’s covers the administrative area of South Dublin County Council. There is a County Enterprise Board for each local authority area in the country.
The Board has signalled a shift in emphasis for the coming years, with the creation of employment returning to centre stage. “We have not forgotten the lessons of the past eight years” says O’Byrne and we still understand that sustainable jobs arise from innovative competitive businesses.
