ABOUT WINE

Choosing Wine for the Festive Season With the festive season fast approaching let me help remove any stress from your wine-buying at this busy time with a few suggestions on some really delicious wines to enjoy when gathered together with your family and friends. Wines that will best complement all the wonderful food you have planned. Mitchells have the perfect pre-dinner wine for your guests, the Bortolomiol Prosecco at €10.95 sparkling, light and refreshing and hitting just the right note. Another ideal white would be Mitchells Sauvingnon Blanc at €9.95, a firm favourite with out customers. For Sherry lovers we have the full range of the highly recommended Lustau sherries to suit all tastes from €16.95. For those preferring red, there is Mitchells Claret, a medium-bodied Bordeaux with lots of ripe fruit and pleasant aromas of spice and vanilla at €11.50. Another attractive medium-bodied red is Castel Firmian Merlot from Italy at €11.95. For the special Christmas Day lunch I propose two options in white that will stand up to the strong flavours of turkey and ham – a stunning 1er Cru Chablis by Denis Race at €24.50 and great value for what is an exceptional wine – or you could go for a quality Sancerre by Raimbault Pineau at €17.95. If serving smoked salmon or goat’s cheese this is a match made in heaven. For the red wine I suggest a French Rhone – Chateau Neuf De Pape Grand Veneur (€24.95) – which is showing layers of ripe fruit and lots of complexity. Alternatively, go for the stunning Naughtons Flight Shiraz from South Africa at €19.95. Be sure to decant the Shiraz two hours before serving and I promise you a memorable experience. Enjoy with your Christmas pudding a nicely chilled glass of Mitchells Gold from Bordeaux at €15.50 – an international award winner, displaying exotic fruits, orange and honey in abundance. After lunch try our range of Barao de Vilar Ports from €15.50. For the New Year celebrations, Montaudon Reserve Premier Champagne at €32.95 is hard to beat.

Keeping the Wolves from the door this Christmas

If you find this time of year extremely hard, take the time to read this article. Dundrum Credit Union in conjunction with MABS (Money Advice Budgeting Service) are launching a guide to sensible Christmas shopping. Entitled ‘Keep the Wolves from the Door this Christmas’, it is aimed at helping people to avoid the trap of excessive spending ,which can result in unnecessary borrowing at this time of year from doorstep lending. 12 | ABOUT DUNDRUM

Many people dread Christmas and the financial pressures that it brings. Many will be driven into the arms of ‘door to door’ money lenders who charge outrageous interest. Some of these money lenders charge up to 150.3% on loans, which is why we want people to know that their local credit union is a much better alternative and that Dundrum/Rathfarnham MABS is available to advise anyone who feels anxious about debt issues. The Christmas Survival Guide is available in the three offices of Dundrum Credit Union Ltd and also from the MABS office on Upper Kilmacud Road, Dublin 14. Be Sensible, Plan in advance! If you must borrow, REMEMBER, Christmas comes around every year so aim to keep the amount borrowed to a minimum and keep your repayment period to 12 months or less.

ABOUT PERSONAL STYLING

My Wardrobe Workout Is your wardbrobe full of clothing relics and long-forgotten shopping mistakes? Perhaps it has lots of items you like but don’t wear very often? Is your wardbrobe full of clothing relics and longforgotten shopping mistakes? Perhaps it has lots of items you like but don’t wear very often? Ok, so I am not one for clutter. In fact, I have a habit of ‘over-culling’ the wardbrobe. And, like many women, I struggle with that terrifying term ‘smart casual’ and find shopping for such items torturous. So, it was time to face by fears and my wardbrobe and call the expert - local style consulant Janice Coyne. Janice and I chatted over a coffee, with Janice gently extracting information about my own ‘style’ and indeed my lifestyle and how my wardbrobe works. As a working mother, my wardbrobe needs to be very versitile, with each item earning its place in my wardbrobe. Following our initial chat, Janice made an appointment to visit me at home for a ‘wardbrobe declutter’. Quite honestly I thought that that 3 hours allocated to the task would be excessive and I was quite nervous about the whole thing. How could it take that long to go through my wardrobe? How wrong I was! Armed with a strong coffe and naturally wearing my best undergarments, I invited Janice into my bedroom for a serious wardbrobe workout. The first task was easy. Janice asked me to take out the items which I liked to wear. Most of these items were evening wear - or more formal wear. Items I bought for special occasions, weddings, etc. Also, in this category were some tops and jeans which I really love. What this process did was reveal a pattern in my purchases and my own style. Funningly enough, I didn’t think I had one, until I started to really look at the items I loved. Feminine, a bit funky and an inverted triangle (my shape) was Janice’s verdict - I felt better about my wardbrobe already! 18 | ABOUT DUNDRUM

by Fiona Tuomey Next, the items I have hanging in the wardbrobe which I don’t wear. Janice went through each item and we got to the bottom of why I didn’t wear them, but still kept them. Janice sorted through each item and placed them on the bed in categories. She asked me try on the items I didn’t wear and between us we identified why they weren’t been worn. Many were were too long (dresses), wrong for my shape or missing something (buttons, tops for layering, accessories) etc. Janice helped me to see how I get many of these items back into action. With the purchase of a couple of items, Janice advised me as to how dresses I had allocated to ‘summer’ or ‘occasional’ wear, could be worn everyday. We even went through my footwear, to identify any gaps. By the end of our time together I had a small pile of clothes for the charity shop (yes, a few horrible mistakes!); a large pile for alterations and a shortlist of items I needed to buy in order to ‘free up’ a large number of items which I do not wear very often. Filled with newfound confidence and sure in the knowledge that a modest investment in a few staple items was going to see the rebirth of my wardbrobe, I made an appointment with Janice for some follow up shopping. This entire service is included in Janice’s fee - which was a modest investment for the results I was already seeing. Bring on the shopping! You can contact Janice for an appointment on 086 806 7702.

ABOUT LEGAL MATTERS

The Importance of Making a Will If you are married and die without making a will (intestate), leaving a spouse and children, your spouse inherits two-thirds of everything you own (your estate). Your children will inherit the remaining one-third equally. If you die and the family home was in your sole name, your children could ask for one-third of its value, leaving financial problems for your surviving spouse. If you are single and die without making a will, your estate is distributed among your next of kin, as set out in the Succession Act 1965. By making a will you can achieve the following: express your wishes as regards your funeral arrangements save your next of kin/beneficiaries inheritance tax appoint guardians for your children under the age of eighteen leave specific assets to specific beneficiaries In deciding to make a will there are a number of things which a solicitor will need to know about you. These include your marital status and whether you have children. It can often be helpful for a person to list the assets/liabilities they have in order to clarify exactly what they wish to leave to different beneficiaries. Legal Right Share: Under the Succession Act 1965, a surviving spouse is legally entitled to a specific share of the estate of a deceased spouse depending on whether the deceased had any children. This right is known as a legal right share and this right will only arise where there is a will and the surviving spouse has never waived his/her right in relation to the legal right share. If the deceased had children, the surviving spouse is entitled to a one-third legal right share of the estate. If there are no children, the spouse is entitled to a one-half share of the estate. In calculating the legal right share of a spouse it is important to realise that joint property is not taken into account in calculating the legal right share. For example, if the family home is in the joint names of 22 | ABOUT DUNDRUM

by Ray Fitzpatrick, Dillon Solicitors the husband and wife and the husband died, the property would automatically pass to the wife. In that situation the wife would still be entitled (where there are children) to a one-third share of the value of the reminder of the husband’s estate in addition to the value of the property. If you previously made a will leaving your estate to your spouse and have subsequently separated or divorced it is vital that you make a new will. We advise that everybody should have a Will. If you have not made yours or wish to make a new Will due to changed circumstances we suggest that you contact us TODAY at 296 0666 or at info@dillon.ie to make an appointment. ABOUT BEFORE YOU SLEEP….

Highlighting - new children’s author Benji Bennett “Before you Sleep” is a beautifully illustrated and heartfelt children’s bedtime book from new children’s writer Benji Bennett. Inspired by the sudden death of his son Adam in August 14th 2007 (aged 4), writer Benji Bennett, supporting the Barretstown Camp for Sick Children, has created a children’s book which communicates Adam’s profound message to parents on the importance of expressing their love with their children in this increasingly stressful and busy world.

At the launch of ‘ Before You Sleep’ , author Benji Bennett with his eldest son Harry and TV3’ s Lorraine Keane

“Before You Sleep” touches magically on many themes and emotions to excite the child’s imagination and instil a message of undying love and friendship between the parent and child. Such themes and emotions include fun, adventure, happiness, love, fantasy, wonder, security, awe, magic, friendship and companionship all of which are central to the storyline. The production of this book not only contains a simple message of love and friendship but is also a source of comfort and strength to the writer and his family who have endured a tragic loss of their innocent, loving and happy angel Adam. The Bennett family share a special connection with the Barretstown Children Charity which has helped them over the last year deal with their grief and loss. Founded by Paul Newman in 1984 Barretstown helps heal illness by providing life changing programmes of therapeutic recreation with the aim to rebuild their confidence, trust and self esteem. Hospitals take care of the physical effect of serious illness; Barretstown helps heal the emotional scars. This book has awarded the Bennett family the strength to live through the pain of their loss and 24 | ABOUT DUNDRUM

ABOUT MORTGAGES

Equity Release Schemes (Part 2) Equity is the market value of your home minus any mortgage on the property. Equity Release Schemes are aimed at older homeowners and are designed to enable you to turn some of the value of your home into cash, either a lump sum or a regular extra income. It is important to exercise extreme caution when considering committing to an Equity Release scheme. The terms and conditions of the schemes are complicated and can be difficult to understand. They are aimed at older homeowners, some of whom may be vulnerable. It is essential to get independent financial and legal advice and to be sure you understand completely the terms of any scheme you may be considering. In Part 1, I discussed some of the general rules applicable to Equity Release Schemes and explained one of the two available schemes, Lifetime Mortgage. The other type of Equity Release Scheme currently being marketed in Ireland is the Home Reversion Scheme. A Home Reversion means you are selling a percentage of your home for a lump sum. You will get much less than the market value of the percentage you sell (the older you are when you start the scheme the bigger the lump sum). You can continue to live in your home for the rest of your life. Home Reversion Scheme contracts are either fixed-share or variable-share. A fixed share contract means you are paid a lump sum for a fixed share of your home. The percentage you own and the percentage owned by the company are fixed and cannot change no matter how long you live or how much your property is worth in the future. With a 40 | ABOUT DUNDRUM

by Alan Shatter TD variable-share contract you get a bigger lump sum at the start but the percentage owned by the company increases every year without you getting any more payments. The longer you live the less of your property you will own. In general, the home reversion scheme will end when you move permanently out of your home (or, depending on the scheme, when you move out for more than a specified number of months) or you sell your home or you die, whichever happens first. You cannot change or reverse this kind of contract. You may, however, through negotiation with the home reversion company, be able buy back the share you sold to them or sell your home to enable you to cash in the share of your home you still own. One of the dangers of releasing equity from your home is you may need the value of your home for nursing home fees or other expenses in the future. Before you commit to an Equity Release scheme, it might be wise to consider other ways of raising money from your home by perhaps renting out a room or downsizing to a smaller property. Other options include transferring ownership of your home to a family member who would provide you money either in a lump sum or in instalments and a “life interest which would give you the right to live in the property for life. Upon your death possession of your home then passes to the family member who owns it. The impact of Home Equity Schemes on a persons freedom to dispose of their home in their will to be discussed in Part 3 Alan Shatter TD represents Dublin South constituency on behalf of Fine Gael. ABOUT THE GARDEN

Round the Garden at Christmas When I was a child just one family on our street strung a single strand of multi-colour fairy lights from a large fire tree in their front garden. Every year, the whole street turned out see Mrs Doherty’s illuminations, as we called them! How times change! Now everyone is at it and there are decorations to suit every pocket. But, what if you are a garden decoration virgin? How do you make it look good? It’s tricky when a lot of what is on offer is so tacky. I would suggest that you start with a theme. My suggested themes for novices would be natural, classy or toytown.

by Tom Percy sleigh and reindeer? Then sue strings of multicoloured lights around the house and trees to set it off. A wreath of sweets and sugar canes on the front door would complet the effect. ....And if you haven’t got a garden? Even window boxes and balconies can be dressed in a festive manner. Simply use the suggested themes but scale them down. Red and gold baubles look great wired into green garlands. Or, perhaps you could invest in an outdoor tree and sparkly lights for your balcony. The advantage of an apartment is that any decorations are unlikely to be stolen if they are three floors up!

Natural: Gather lots of greenery: everygreen clippings from your garden, ivy or Christmas tree cuttings. Wire them onto lengths of rope and add colour with ribbons, sprayed pine cones and berries (you can buy artificial ones if the birds have been busy). Drape them over porches and hedges and around fences.

Finally, remember most neighbours are grateful for the ‘less is more’ approach to front garden decorations. However, if you do have the time, money and understanding people next door then by all means go for it! Just make sure that they are all down by 6th January. Nothing say ‘naff’ quite like fairy lights still flickering in February!

Candles look great providing they are sheltered in jam jars, which can be left plain or painted with glass paint from a craft shop. Tin cans also make nice candle holders. Fill them with water, freeze them, then punch a pattern of holes in the side with a hammer and different sized nails.

Classy: Neither too much or too little. Keep it simple with twinkling white lights strung around the front of the house and any garden trees, front and back. A simple but huge holly wreath on the door adds the finishing touch.

Toytown: This does not have to be tacky. The trick is to buy one huge, really good quality, decoration for your front or back garden. Perhaps Santa’s 42 | ABOUT DUNDRUM
