Last year, I attended as many memorial services as possible. One year later I find myself thanking many of my photographers who joined me and spread throughout as many communities as possible, capturing photographs of the memorial services. Fire News utilized our photographs in our 9/11 20th Anniversary-Fire News Remembrance and Tribute edition. This magazine was a work of art that remembered all those lost on September 11, 2001, and continued paying tribute to those that passed away over the past 20 years due to illnesses spurred by toxic chemicals generated by the attack. When I pass

As I write this editorial, the date is September 1, 2022. This editorial is my October editorial. Sitting at my desk, my mind is reflecting ahead to September 11, 2022. Taking a few moments remembering the day our nation was attacked, it is our duty to never forget September 11, 2001. I remember driving to work on a clear crisp day. The major story on the radio was about a “small” airplane that crashed into the World Trade Center. When I arrived at work, I immediately turned on the news and realized the airplane was not a small plane and my city was probably under attack. Yes, we were under attack. I reflected and shared my recollection with my readers for the past 21 years.

Reflections on 9/11 and a Busy Fall Season From the Editor’s Desk

Yes, September and October are busy times in the fire service. Polish off your ideas and incorporate new activities into your Safety Programs. If you need help, meet with your Fire Prevention Committees to discuss what you can do to embellish your Fire Prevention Program.

At 1056 on August 14, 2022, the RochesterFire Department was dispatched forthe report of smoke and flames coming from a scrap yard on Steel Street. RochesterPolice reported an active fire on arrival, and Battali on 2 requested a full structure assignment. Aworking fire was declared on the arrival of the first units, with an approximately 100- x 50-foot pile of scrap on fire. Crews worked to establish a watersupply and begin to douse the flames, using handlines, a deck gun, and the aerial off RochesterTruck 10. The fire took roughly a half hourto bring undercontrol, and employees at the scrap yard assisted with machinery and manpowerto reach the seat of the fire in the pile.

As we move into 2023, try to think about something special your department can do to bring peace in our world. Plan on reflecting with your neighboring departments to never forget September 11, 2001. Remember to never forget those that continue to be lost to 9/11 diseases. Never Forget!

As the summer months are passing us by and we enter the fall, are you prepared to do your job under different conditions? Already I am finding that the windows on my car are fogging up on the inside, making response a little slower. Before you know it, the inside fog will move to the outside of your car windows, and you will be reminded that winter is not far away. Please take the time to clear off your frosted windows before you respond to a call. Think about the children who are waiting at school bus stops. Use caution while responding through school zones and bus stops. I have seen two students who were badly hurt when they tried to run across a busy street to catch a bus that they were late for.

2-Alarms Sounded in Schenectady

Recently, Schenectady firefighters battled a two-alarm fire in a vacant building on 2nd Avenue in Mount Pleasant after911 calls were received forheavy smoke in the area. Firefighters were confronted with flames venting from the windows on the D side of the

Man Rescued from Brooklyn Blaze

Firefighters rescued a trapped civilian in a house fire on East 83rd Street on August 12, 2022. FDNYfirefighters from TowerLadder 170 and Rescue 2 found the victim suffering from severe burns and smoke inhalation He was removed to Brookdale Hospital in critical condition. Anotherresident suffered minorinjuries.

First arriving companies found a large 2-1/2 story row home with heavy fire venting from a dormeron the top floor. Lines were quickly stretched to the top floorand the floor below. Asecond alarm was transmitted due to the size of the building, bringing in extra resources. Through hard work, firefighters were able to keep the fire contained to the area of origin.

In Glenville, the driverof a minivan lost control on Glenridge Road striking a vehicle and a utility pole before coming to rest on its side in the front yard of a home. On June 28, 2022, Elsmere Fire, Delmar Bethlehem EMS and Bethlehem Police responded to Kenwood Avenue fora personal injury crash involving three vehicles. First arriving units found two vehicles with significant damage off the side of the road. EMS evaluated the patients involved. Elsmere fire personnel secured the vehicles and cleaned up the scene while Kenwood Avenue was shut down at the entrance of the bypass. Police investigated the cause.

Quick Stop in Rochester

On July 29, 2022, at around 0930, the Village of Mamaroneck Fire Department along with the Town of Mamaroneck Fire Department were dispatched to I-95 northbound fora tractortrailerfire. When the first-due engine arrived, they quickly stretched the trash line and began extinguishing the fire. Foam operation was used because fire had erupted in the saddle tank. Engines 42, 41, 36 and 51 all stretched trash line off of theirrigs. The fire was knocked down within 27 minutes.

Catskill fire was dispatched fora structure fire in the Jefferson Heights section. Car3 confirmed heavy smoke showing with a victim on the second floor. Catskill Car2 arrived and took command as Car3 entered the building searching fora reported victim. County Car2, who lives close by, kept control of the main entrance of the home to prevent family members from re-entering. Upon reaching the second floorand forcing the door, the victim was located in the front bedroom with a light smoke condition, due to his doorbeing closed. Simultaneously, the first engine arrived and put a line in service. Fourfirefighters were on a line to the rearof the firs t floor. Acaptain and Hudson Car2 headed up to the second floorto assist with the victim. Aftera very quick hit on a closet and hallway, all visible fire was knocked down. Due to the fast work of getting wateron the fire, the victim was unharmed. Hudson Fire assisted at the scene as well as a Catskill ambulance and state police. At 2157 on July 1, 2022, the RochesterFire Department was dispatched to a fire in the attic of a dwelling on Crossfield Road. Engine 9 arrived to heavy smoke showing from a 1-½ story dwelling and stretched a line. Units quickly identified that the fire was in the attic, and made quick work of the fire with a combination of an interiorattack and roof ventilation. The cause of the fire was determined to be electrical in nature and the single occupant of the home made it out safely.

On July 12, 2022, at around 1624, the Port ChesterFire Department was dispatched to Fox Island Road fora structure fire. Engine 61 arrived to smoke showing from a 2-1/2 story structure. Purchase, City of Rye, the Town of Mamaroneck FASTand Rye Brook also responded to the scene. Car2391 arrived to heavy fire on the second flooron the 3-4 cornerand requested Valhalla Rehab to the scene. The fire was knocked down within 31 minutes.

Early in the morning of July 26, 2022, Fairport firefighters were dispatched to Olde Prestwick Way fora fire. On arrival, companies found heavy fire running up the rearof a large dwelling and extending to the eaves of the home. Crews quickly stretched lines to the rearof the structure as well as to the front doorto make an interiorpush on the fire, but the flames entered and ran across the attic.

Firefighters were pulled out of the home as structural stability became a worry with the collapse of the roof. Two towerladders were put into operation to knock down the heavy main body of fire before crews were able to re-enterthe structure to finish the remaining fire.

The FDNYstruck a second alarm fora fire in two private dwellings on 123rd Avenue in South Jamaica on June 26, 2022. Units arrived to find a heavy fire condition in the rearof a private dwelling with the flames extending to the home next door. Lines were stretched and truck companies went to work to bring the blaze undercontrol.

Firefighters in Williamsburg recently battled a three-alarm fire. LadderCompany 108 transmitted an urgent 10-75 forheavy fire out the second floor, auto extending to the third floorand an exposure building on Meserole Street on August 12, 2022. The incident left five people with minorinjuries. Firefighters used six hose lines to knock down the fire.

At 2357 on July 19, 2022, Engine 17 from the RochesterFire Department was dispatched to a vehicle fire in the parking lot of an apartment building on AlexanderStreet. They arrived to find a car fully involved, and quickly stretched a line. The fire was contained to the vehicle and did not spread to any exposures, and fire investigators responded to determine the cause.

On June 9, 2022, the Onesquethaw Fire Department and EMS responded to a personal injury crash on Route 32, Indian Fields Road, in Feura Bush. Upon arrival they found two vehicles in the middle of the highway. One of vehicles was speeding and crashed into the back of the othervehicle that had slowed to make a left hand turn into the Stewarts Shop. Two passengers were transport ed to the hospital by Onesquethaw Ambulance. The Albany County Sheriffs issued two tickets to the one driver.

Dinner was provided on Wednesday evening at the Spencerport Fire District where the attendees got to experience local dining delicacies such as a “plate” or a Beef-on-Weck with Salt Potatoes. The Rochester Area NFFF team worked with the foundation for many months planning the conference. While the foundation sought speakers and presenters, the local committee of community volunteers worked with local businesses and venues to enhance the experience for the attendees and showcase all that Rochester and Monroe County has to offer our visiting families.

National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Hosts Wellness Conference

Sixty families came to Rochester from all over the country to attend the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) 2022 Fire Hero Family Wellness Conference. The conference was held at the Double Tree by Hilton in Henrietta from May 17 to May 20, 2022, and included seminars, workshops and community visits to area highlights. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) is in Emmitsburg, MD. The foundation’s mission is “to honor and remember America’s fallen fire heroes, to provide resources to assist their families in rebuilding their lives, and work within the fire service community to reduce firefighter deaths and injuries.” This annual conference is

Morning sessions on “Building Resilience Through Nature,” “Strong at the Broken Places,” “ADeafening Silence,” and “Taking Care of Yourself and Your Family in Stressful Times” were just a few of the topics they could choose from. AMen’s Service Project was hosted at the Fire Museum in Brockport where some landscaping was completed and fellowship with local firefighters provided. Off-site tours in the afternoon were provided to Mount Hope Cemetery, Highland Park, Strong Museum of Play, the

Village Mayor Margay Blackman and was able to see our 9/11 Memorial. Care for Rare: America is a non-profit organization with centers in the US, Canada and across Europe, dedicated to improving the lives of children with rare diseases. Care for Rare was founded 13 years ago in Munich with ties to the US in Boston. According to their website: “The Carefor-Rare Alliance comprises a large network of physicians and scientists working at academic pediatric centers and science institutes to support the foundation’s mission: Treating children with rare diseases, discovering the causes of diseases, and developing new therapies.” The Brockport Fire District wishes Joerg well in his travels and appreciates the time he spent with us.

He has been associated with Care for Rare for the last eight years after finding out a friend

of his had a child suffering from a rare childhood disease. After visiting some of these children in hospitals, he said he learned one thing from them; “Don’t postpone your dreams.” I asked him to describe his trip for us, and his response to was “I am living my dreams.” This year, his passage began in San Francisco where he arrived from Munich on March 14, 2022. He started his ride on March 22 and has been on the move since. His plan is to continue to New York City to complete his expedition. He also plans a brief stopover in Monroe, CT, where he will visit his son’s host family from an Educational Exchange his son participated in years ago. We consider ourselves fortunate there were firefighters at our station when he arrived. His Brockport visit with us included tours of our headquarters and the Brockport Fire Museum on Main Street where he met

Brockport firefighters were in for a surprise visit when Joerg Richter rode his bicycle into town as his cross-country journey brought him down the Erie Canal into the historic Village of Brockport. Richter has ridden through over 30 US states, and 17 different countries in Europe in his quest to raise awareness and funds for “Care for Rare: America.” Firefighter Richter served with the Kerpen Feuerwehr (Fire Department) outside Colon, Germany, for many years before leaving the fire service and moving north of Munich, where he has lived for the last 34 years. In his personal efforts to support Care for Rare, he has ridden across our country twice previously and has visited over 900 fire stations, spending the night at over 445 of them.

Boght Fire Department is requested many times throughout the yearto assist with waterrescues on the Mohawk River. Training is very important to them. Assistant Chief David Bagley and Captain Marc Rice spent two evenings with new members training them on what to do, what to expect and how to properly and safely assist someone while on a rescue call in the water.

As approved by the New York State Department of Financial Services the New York Compensation Insurance Rating Board (NYCIRB) has implemented a new calculation this year to determine the Experience Modification Factors (EMFs) for all New York State Employers — including fire districts. This may result in a significant change to some employers/fire districts EMFs which is based on the policyholder's loss experience. According to NYCIRB, after a detailed study they found that the prior calculation did not sufficiently incentivize workplace safety or adjust premiums to an appropriate level for individual risks.

On Tuesday evening, we held our Annual Memorial Service at the Fuller Road Fire Department. firehouse in Colonie, followed by dinner. The conference theme was based on the Four Chaplains and how our Association of Fire Chaplains had their humble beginnings. Our Memorial Address was given by Rev. Gary Holden. Also, during the Annual Memorial Service, Father Donald Rutherford, Major General (Chief Chaplain; ret.), of the US Army Chaplains, helped honor the Four Chaplains. He did so by lighting four separate candles during the association’s Joint Necrology reading of our deceased members, and, the Four Chaplains who gave up their life

During the dinner we also had Father Donald Rutherford, speak on the Four Chaplains. He also displayed his Bronze Star medal and other items of interest from his US Army position as Chief Chaplain. We also had a display, with explanation, of the “The Table set for One,” by American Legion Post 42, Chatham, Auxiliary President Barbara Fischer. Chief Chaplain Thomas With also presented identical plaques to Rev. Gary Holden, of the Four Chaplains Foundation, and to Senior Minister Lynn Bodden, of the First Reformed Church of Schenectady. Lt. Charles V. Poling, one of the Four Chaplains, was a Pastor at the First Reformed Church of Schenectady.

Annual Fire Chaplains Training Conference 2022

We concluded our conference on Wednesday with training on “Cancer in the NYS Fire Service,” by Fire Protection Specialist Timothy Graves, DHSES, Office of Fire Prevention and Control.

The NYSAFC held their Annual Training Conference at the Comfort Inn and Suites, East Greenbus. It was an informative conference with training from the Four Chaplains Foundation, NYS Office of Mental Health, and Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Office of Fire Prevention and Control. Chief Chaplain Thomas With gave the Association’s annual welcome. The Annual Memorial Service, and, Annual Dinner were also conducted during the Conference. Every day started with a time of prayers and devotions. The theme of the 2022 Conference was the “Four Chaplains.”

On Sunday evening, we had Chaplain Refresher Training, conducted by Executive Secretary William Miles, with assistance from Association 2nd Deputy Joseph McCarthy. This all took place during a power outage, which occurred when a local sub-station suffered an Mondayexplosion.began with a short welcome by Chief Chaplain Thomas With. He introduced Rev. Gary Holden, Senior Chaplain of the Four Chaplains Foundation. Rev. Holden’s training presentation of the day was “Introduction to Being a Fire Chaplain.”

Three people lost theirlives in a five-alarm fire that consumed three houses and damaged several others on 125th Street near Liberty Avenue in the South Ozone Park section of Queens on June 17, 2022. Atrailerhauling garbage caught fire on the New York State Thruway northbound, just afterExit 22, in Selkirk recently. First arriving Selkirk Fire Department units found a trailerthat was already separated from the truck, with flames coming from the back of the trailer. Firefighters initially used handlines, then Selkirk 29-70’s aerial was used to extinguish the fire. Roberts Towing assisted by pulling out the contents of the trailerto help speed up the process of putting out the fire. Assisting Selkirk was the Coeymans Fire Department.

On August 13, 2022, the Tarrytown Fire Department, along with FASNY, combined forced to have a parade, Tarrytown’s Inspection Parade and FASNY’s 150th Anniversary parade. The firefighter parade featured fire departments from New York State, New Jersey and Connecticut along with firefighters and theirapparatus. GovernorKathy Hochul was a guest speaker.
