ANNOUNCEMENTS

From the Editor’s Desk Dennis Whittam, Editor

Prepare for the Holidays As you prepare for the upcoming holiday season, Fire News asks you to pause and reflect on the positive things your department has been involved with all year long. When we think of November, we think of Thanksgiving, football, good food, friends, prayers for our military away from their familes, and prayers of strength to those who are ill or have lost a loved one. Fire News commends the departments who reach out to their community to offer a home cooked meal to the unfortunate. Let’s face it, we are in tough times and many of the people we protect could use your help to bring Thanksgiving to them. Then come the food and toy drives with December. The decorations come out and the vehicles are prepped to take Santa to the children. It does not matter if someone is celebrating Christmas or Hanukah. What matters is that you take the time to bring smiles to the children. Nothing is more rewarding than when your department brings Santa to a family who might be in need or who has a family member serving in the military. The planning for the holiday season is now. Give some thought and discuss how your department can help those that are less fortunate than others. It is important that you reach out to let the organizations that directly help you know you care and appreciate what they are doing. Fire News is more than just a newspaper. We are involved in and support the organizations there for you when you are in need of help. Give some thought to learning more about the 9/11 WTC Tribute Center, the Terry Farrell Firefighter Fund, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Fund, the FDNY Honor Legion or the Heather Pendergast Fund, which assists children of volunteers who face threatening illnesses or injury. All of these organizations do not exist without your support. Many years ago, I was standing at a fire in Bushwick, Brooklyn. I remember an elderly lady coming up to the pump operator and smiling. She stopped and said something in Spanish. She said, “Amamos a nuestros bomberos, que Dios los bendiga.” (I used Google translator to help me with what was said.) The pump operator asked me if I knew what she said. When I said no, he told me she said “We love our firefighters, may God bless you.” It was at that moment that I realized that responders are special. Reach out to your community and bring joy to the people who love you … Dennis

TIN HELMETS IRON MEN It is not like any other book you have every seen: Tin Helmets Iron Men, by veteran fire photographer Bob Bartosz. For you old timers, Bob Bartosz was one of the first to come out with a modern hardcover firebook back in 1971, called Black & White and Red All Over, and within six months it was sold out. Bob’s newest book Tin Helmets Iron Men, looks like it will be a fast sell out also. It is printed as a very limited edition hardcover of 216 pages with some of the greatest fire photos and stories you have every seen. It is based on fires fought by the Philadelphia Fire Department during the 1950s through the 1970s, during which time, their members wore the Cairns aluminum helmets. All the photos are in black and white and are not the typical fire photos, as you will see when you get your copy. The introduction of the book is written by former Fire Commissioner and Chief of the Department William C. Richmond. Bob Bartosz has been taking fire photos for over 50 years and still can be seen on the fire grounds. Also included in Tin Helmets Iron Men are various apparatus photos of some of Philadelphia’s greatest pieces of equipment, and some very interesting stories, especially one about the captain from Engine Co. 24; a mystery that was solved after 29 years. We would suggest you order your copy now or you may miss out on it; when they are gone — they are gone. A special price of $28.95 includes free shipping. Tin Helmets Iron Men is available from Bob Bartosz, 599 Wendover Lane, Battleboro, NC 27809. Phone: 252 446 1962; e-mail: civilwarbnp @gmail.com.

BURN FOUNDATION RAISES $23,600 AT WILDWOOD SHOW On September 14, 2013, the drawing commenced for the top winner of the raffle sales to raise funds in Wildwood for the Burn Foundation. Twenty-four tickets were drawn for the limited edition signed and numbered prints of Joseph Getsinger’s, “Fire Parade.” The last raffle ticket drawn was for the framed #1 Giclee'canvas print, which was won by Robert Wilson of Port Republic, NJ. Robert is a past chief, firefighter, and a member of the NJ Forest Fire Service. When the tally came in for the funds received amounted to $23,600. Artist John Egenstafer of Bridgeton, NJ, who volunteered, assisted in raffle ticket sales and sold a huge amount of collector pins on Saturday. Roy Burnham, who was the “Fire Police” guy in the print was on hand to meet visitors and raffle ticket purchasers at the Burn Foundation booth. Thanks Roy! In addition Atlas Flasher donated pens for the raffle tickets. It is interesting to note that the fluorescent orange cone in the painting was one of theirs. Thanks to the Five Mile Beach Committee for securing and counting the funds collected during the raffle. Getsinger was able to recruit able body Burn Foundation supporters to rustle up some funds prior to the Wildwood event. The top single amount raised before the conventions was from Fran Ferry of Rolferry’s in Brooklawn, NJ, a year-round supporter of the Burn Foundation.

ANNOUNCEMENTS continued from page 4 Other contributors to the cause were: Dave Bowerman of ADB Services Inc., Westville, NJ; and Assistant Chief Dennis Sharpe of Farmington Fire Company from Egg Harbor Township, NJ. Many thanks go out to BC&B Graphics, Inc., President Bill Eachus, Jr., who not only superbly printed the “Fire Parade” prints, but also printed the raffle tickets, which of course were paid for again by our generous sponsor, Fire & Safety Services, Ltd., President David Russell. Burn Foundation collector pins were also flying out of the booth. The Collector Cards supplied by Choicemarketing’s (www.choicecustomcards.com) Chip Lillie to support the Burn Foundation in their fundraising efforts got into many hands who stopped at the Burn Foundation booth. Each person who purchased a collector pin also received a Choicemarketing card. Getsinger has sup-

ported the Burn Foundation for over 33 years with his fire art. His e-mail is: jgetsart@ aol.com and eBay store is at:stores.ebay.com/ Joseph-Getsinger-ArtStudio, where he automatically donates a percentage of each sale directly to the Burn Foundation through Mission Fish on eBay. You can automatically donate funds to the Burn Foundation when you sell on eBay, by going through Mission Fish. It doesn’t have to be a fire related item and you can designate any percentage of your sale to go directly to the Burn Foundation (www.burnfound- ation.org. Last but not least, a great thanks to the fine staff from the Fire News who did a wonderful job supporting the Burn Foundation. What will be next year’s image? We’d like to hear from you. So e-mail the artist with your suggestions at: jgetsart@aol.com.

VETERAN FIREFIGHTER KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN A Ramsey firefighter serving in Afghanistan was one of three soldiers killed in an attack on September 21, 2013. Army Staff Sgt. Timothy Raymond McGill, a 30-year-old Ridgewood native, was killed when an Afghan wearing a security forces uniform turned his weapon against U.S. troops. The shooting occurred in Gardez, at Forward Operating Base Shank, near the Pakistan border — a front line in the fighting with the Taliban and other militants. McGill, a Ramsey Rescue squad member, was a software trainer and business consultant who was graduated from Ramapo College and Ridgewood High School. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 2001 and was deployed to Iraq four years later. After returning to Ramsey, he resumed his military career with the Rhode Island Army National Guard in 2008 as an anti-armor specialist. McGill became an elite Special Forces soldier in 2011 and was assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion 19th Special Forces. Our condolences to his family. — www.FireFighterCloseCalls.com

A 1-3/4 inch line was stretched initially, but the fire was stubborn so MVFC switched to foam operation and quelled the fire. The car was a total loss. - Fire News photos by Robert Macom

Roseland F.D. Celebrates 100 Years of Service One hundred years ago, on July 23, 1913, 44 men attended a meeting at “Band Hall.” The intent of the meeting was to form a citizen group that would protect the town from fires. They adopted the name Roseland Volunteer Fire Company and elected William Chubbuck the first Chief; E.A. Williams, Assistant Chief; Oscar DeCamp, Treasurer; and Arthur Braunsworth, Secretary. All the members present adopted a pledge that read, “We the undersigned citizens of Roseland, pledge ourselves to form a volunteer fire company, without pay, for a period of one year, to protect life and property of the Borough against loss by fire.” Today the Roseland Fire Department consists of over 35 firefighters. The department also has a cadet program. Members are additionally trained as EMTs, Haz-Mat Technicians and Technical Rescue Technicians. There are six pieces of apparatus along with special apparatus. - Fire News photos by Craig Haas
