You Have a Voice!

It always amazes me how little people know about the fire service. The people in your community see your apparatus responding to calls, but really have no understanding what those manning the emergency vehicles go through to be allowed to respond to assist them. Many people are misinformed and actually think all responders are paid.

So many people, including members, do not realize that according to NFPA, approximately 70 percent of America’s firefighters are volunteers, and 85 percent of the nation’s fire departments are all or mostly volunteer.

The smallest communities — those with fewer than 10,000 residents — are almost always served by volunteer departments, according to the NFPA. Our Canadian neighbors have a fire service that is made up of 69percent volunteers. Yes, it is hard to believe that in this day and age the fire service is primarily made up of a force that is put together by dedicated people who are trained professionals.

Many years ago, the job required little training and it was easier for community members to volunteer. Today it is a different story. As you know, all first responders are required to take extensive training to become a firefighter or EMT. Like professional responders, you also are required to take yearly refresher courses to maintain your sta-

tus. In the early 90s, OSHA recommended yearly refresher courses in HazMat awareness and other important areas such as Violence in the Workplace, Sexual Harassment, and Bloodborne Pathogens. If you drive your department apparatus, you must take awareness and skill-based courses to show you are competent in the operation of your department vehicles. We live in changing times.

If I ask you what CFSI is, can you tell me?

The Congressional Fire Service Institute is an organization that is made up of people and organizations whose mission is, “To educate members of Congress about fire and life saving issues. Established in 1989 as a nonprofit, nonpartisan policy institute, CFSI is designed to educate members of Congress about the needs and challenges of our nation's fire and emergency services to help them understand how the federal government can support the needs of our local first responders.”

This organization holds a yearly symposium and dinner that draws over 1500 fire and emergency service leaders from all over the US. Their mission is to get together with members of Congress and discuss the current issues and concerns in the fire service.

Mays Landing Kitchen Fire

The volunteer fire companies of Mays Landing, Laureldale and Cologne responded to Delancy Court on December 8, 2018, for a report of a structure fire. Mays Landing Chief Lou DiMartine established command, and reported smoke showing and special requested a dispatch of the Mizpah Volunteer Fire Company.

Command had Mays Landing 18-19 come to the front of the building, a two-story, wood frame, single-family dwelling, located on a cul-de-sac with a roundabout, and pull a line into the front door where they found a pantry closet on fire. Once the fire was knocked down, ceilings were pulled and fans were set up for ventilation.

10-Alarm Fire in Elmwood Park January 30, 2019, was set to go down in the history books as one of the coldest on record with high winds and sub-zero temperatures. It also was to become the night of one of the largest fires in Bergen County in many years. A little after 1700, the Elmwood Park Fire Department was dispatched to the Marcal Paper Company on Market Street for a fire. This is somewhat routine as the department has been there on multiple occasions over the years for fires, many small and a few larger including one that went to five alarms. Tonight, however, would be different. As the first chief arrived he reported a heavy smoke condition and what appeared to be three buildings involved in fire and immediately requested a third alarm.

Firefighters attempted to locate the seat of the fire but the heavy smoke made it difficult and within 15 minutes command reported heavy fire through the roof and embers landing on buildings and homes across the street and he requested a fourth alarm. Approximately 40 minutes into the fire command reported a heavy ember problem and had companies chasing embers for several blocks. As they were landing on houses, a small fire started on the roof of Boro Hall several blocks away, but it was quickly extinguished. In less than an hour, all members were evacuated and switched to an exterior attack. The high winds played havoc with the master streams. As the fire was rapidly spreading, command requested multiple ladders to set up around the complex and just over an hour into the fire the fifth alarm was transmitted as the fire continued to spread through the complex. A drafting site was set up with engines drafting from the Passaic River, and additional alarms were sounded bringing fire companies from Bergen, Passaic and Hudson counties to the scene.

The wind and subzero temperatures continued to play havoc, helping spread the fire and freezing water in the hoses, pumps and on the fire ground — two engines had to be placed out of service because their pumps froze. Command requested the State Neptune (high volume water) System to the scene, however it was unable to respond.

The fire eventually spread to most of the buildings within the confines of the complex including a large four-story mill which held the famous Marcal Paper sign on its roof, and another two-story mill building which was over 600-feet long. Units were able to protect the main production building, the complex’s power plant and several other buildings.

After 24 hours, companies were being rotated into the fire scene, and command reported numerous deep-seated fires in the rubble with a demolition crew attempting to pull the rubble apart.

Miraculously no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was being investigated by the NJ State Fire Marshal's Office, the BATF&E and local authorities.

Wallington 3-Alarmer On December 11, 2018, the Wallington Fire Department was dispatched to Lester Street for a fire. Crews found the house well involved on the Charlie side and had auto-exposed to a nearby car. A second alarm was stuck on arrival quickly followed by a third. Multiple lines were stretched into the interior along with exterior lines to contain the bulk of the fire. Mutual aid companies came from Passaic, Rutherford, East Rutherford, Carlstadt, Moonachie, Garfield and Wood-Ridge responded to the scene.

Cologne Apartment Fire

The volunteer fire companies of Cologne, Laureldale and Mays Landing were dispatched on December 14, 2018, to Ivy Bush Court in the Woodlands Complex on Route 322 for a structure fire. Cologne and Laureldale firefighters were nearby at a vehicle fire and responded. Command was established by Cologne Firefighter Chris Taylor who reported smoke showing. Cologne Assistant Chief Paul Gramm led his and Laureldale’s firefighters into the structure and found fire rolling across the ceiling of the kitchen and cabinets coming off the wall. Mays Landing Assistant Chief Ken Badger, Jr., assumed command. Crews vented units on the B and C sides where they discovered CO readings. On the C side of the original fire floor firefighters hydraulically ventilated and pulled ceilings in the kitchen area.

Warren County Chimney Fire On December 2, 2018, Warren County Communications Center alerted crews for a chimney fire on Countryside Drive. Units arrived to fire coming from the chimney area and several windows on the second floor. As crews started an interior attack, a firstalarm box was called bringing Tri County, Independence, Budd Lake and Washington Borough companies to the scene. The fire was knocked down within a half hour. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries and were transported to the hospital by Hackettstown First Aid. - Fire News photos by Kevin J. Generator Generates Fire On December 5, 2018, Central Dispatch received a call reporting a fire outside of a building on Harbor Road. Marmora Deputy Chief Russell Barham and Chief Jay Newman, found flames showing from a generator on the exterior of the building. A line was stretched to extinguish the blaze while the source of the fuel, a propane tank, was located and secured.

Crews responding were Marmora Volunteer Fire Rescue and Upper Township Rescue.

Wall Twp. Attic Fire On November 23, 2018, the Wall Township Fire Department District 52 dispatched a district-wide box alarm for a reported attic fire on 18th Avenue.

A chief from District 3 arrived to visible fire showing from the roof and requested a second alarm.

Along with all three Wall districts, mutual aid came from Neptune, Belmar, Spring Lake, and two tankers from Howell. Crews conducted an interior attack and were able to knock down the majority of the fire from the interior, using an exterior line to knock down fire that had spread into the chimney.

Extensive overhaul was conducted as crews remained on scene throughout the night.

4-Alarmer in Hudson County

On December 19, 2018, North Hudson Regional Fire Rescue sent a full assignment to a residence on 70th Street for a report of smoke coming from a roof. Crews arrived to a three-story, multi-use occupancy, attached on both sides, with a moderate smoke condition showing and a second alarm was struck. Crews had a tough time locating fire in the walls and chased the fire throughout the building as it spread to multiple floors, along with sight extension to the Bravo exposure. The third and fourth alarms brought all North Hudson companies to the scene along with Jersey City, while other companies from Bayonne, Hoboken, Kearny and Jersey City covered North Hudson.

NJ Emergency Preparedness Association Captain Jonathan C. Young Memorial Scholarship This scholarship, named for Captain Jonathan C. Young, former President of the New Jersey Emergency Preparedness Association, is intended for a graduating high school senior or college student presently enrolled in an accredited college or university interested in pursuing a career in the emergency management field of study (to be approved by the Scholarship Committee). This includes fire suppression, law enforcement, hazardous material, arson investigation, etc.

ELIGIBILITY & RULES The candidate must be a high school senior or presently enrolled in a college or university as a full-time or part-time student. The candidate must be a legal U.S. resident and a resident of the State of New Jersey.

All applications must be received as one file or package by email and should include transcripts and any other supporting information. See below for the contact information. Applications must be received no later than Friday, March 29, 2019, at 3 p.m. Any application received after this date/time will not be considered for a scholarship.

SELECTION PROCESS All applications will be reviewed for eligibility and to ensure that all supporting documentation has been received. A blind selection process will be employed with original documentation in the custody of the Executive Director or their designee. Applications will then be reviewed by the selection committee. Should there be no qualified applicants in any given year the scholarship may not be awarded.

Scholarship Awardees will be notified by e-mail and/or telephone between April 18, 2019 and April 22, 2019.

Bargaintown Commercial Fire Stopped

The volunteer fire companies of Bargaintown and Scullville responded to Zion Road for a structure fire in a mall containing numerous businesses and restaurants. Bargaintown Assistant Chief Will Hancock established command and reported smoke showing from the A side. Scullville Ladder 1535 laddered the parapet, Bargaintown Engine 1522 took a position on the A side also and its crew made entry into the stores to find the seat of the fire while Bargaintown Rescue 1527 dropped a supply line to a nearby hydrant. Firefighters found a fire in a salon that spread to an adjacent florist and filled a sub shop with smoke. The fire was quickly brought under control. Assisting on scene were Cardiff, EHTFD Chief of Department, EHTFD Fire Official, EHT Ambulance and EHT POLICE. The City of Linwood covered Bargaintown.

Wild Rollover in Belleville On December 20, 2018, Belleville Engine 2, Truck 1 and EMS 1 were dispatched to Route 21 northbound for an MVA with reported entrapment. Engine 2 encountered a heavily damaged SUV, which had rolled multiple times and come to rest on the center divider with the single occupant still in the vehicle.

The SUV appeared to have struck the divider, overturning across all northbound lanes. The driver was able to walk into EMS 1 but was transported to UMDNJ in an unknown condition. Newark Fire also responded to the scene but was cancelled after arrival.

Mays Landing MVA The volunteer fire company of Mays Landing responded to Millville Avenue and The Avenue of the Pines on October 31, 2018, for an MVA involving a school bus.

Mays Landing firefighters, under the command of Captain Larry Birch III, arrived to find an overturned passenger vehicle and a severed utility pole. Firefighters assessed the situation and found no entrapment and the school bus free of students. Firefighters stood by while the passenger vehicle was uprighted and then disconnected the battery and applied drying agent. The Township of Hamilton Rescue Squad transported one person from the scene, and the Township of Hamilton Police were investigating the cause of the crash.

Nice Drivin’, Tex! On November 9, 2018, the Nutley Fire Department responded to Glendale Street for a house fire. Crews arrived to heavy fire showing from the division 2 windows and a second alarm was struck. Crews initiated an interior attack as mutual aid from Lyndhurst, Bloomfield and Belleville responded. As heavy fire persisted, crews were forced to evacuate and the fire was darkened down by an exterior line. Companies reentered the structure to conduct overhaul as the Belleville truck company did a great job positioning their truck between basement stairs, overhead wires and parked cars to get a shot at the roof and conducted ventilation.

Quick Stop in Irvington On December 20, 2018, the Irvington Fire Department dispatched a full assignment to a residence on Grace Street for a fire. Crews arrived to smoke and fire from the A side. Crews quickly located the fire and it was knocked down within 15 minutes. Mutual aid came from Maplewood and Orange, while West Orange, East Orange and Bloomfield covered the city.

Warren County Garage Fire Extends On the morning of January 31, 2019, Warren County Communications Center started receiving calls for a garage fire on Canal Lane. As first responders arrived, the garage was well-involved and spreading to the house. Hackettstown Fire laid a supply line from Route 46, quickly darkening down the garage. But in the meantime, the fire had extended to the house. A second Hackettstown engine and crews from Independence Fire started to pull backup lines and tried to enter the house but were backed out by a roof collapse. Crews went exterior for a short time and then re-entered the house and continued to hit hot spots. The fire was brought under control within two hours. There were no injuries and the fire was under investigation. Mutual aid came from Warren and Morris counties.

AC Fire Academy FF1 Graduation The Atlantic County Fire Academy held the graduation for their Summer and Fall Firefighter 1 classes on January 28, 2019, at the Egg Harbor Township Community Center. The attendance included 42 fire companies from Ocean, Atlantic and Cape May counties not only for the graduation, but for a "salutation" to Mizpah firefighter Natalie Dempsey, who died in the line of duty Christmas Day and who was scheduled to graduate as part of the summer class of 2018.

Academy Director Chief Michael J. Corbo greeted the attendees and introduced the chiefs, assistant chiefs, Atlantic County government representatives, and officers from the Atlantic County Firefighters Association. Remarks were given by Atlantic County Firefighters Association Executive Director Howard Berchtold, Jr., and President Charles Kisby. Director Corbo then presented the graduates their certificates, and called up each chief and parent of the graduates who greeted their respective graduate (top left).

Director Corbo announced that an inaugural award would start with this graduation; the Ted Reinhard Award for most improved firefighter, which was presented to City of Absecon Firefighter Brian S. Pendlebury; the Donald Dagrosa Award for Highest Scholastic Average was awarded to Christopher M. Shea of the City of Longport Fire Department (bottom left).

would like to speak on behalf of their class, and Nesco Firefighter Arch Szczcepanksi stepped up to the podium and spoke (right).

Old Tappan Installs Officers for 2019 The Old Tappan Volunteer Fire Department installed its Line and Administrative Officers for 2019. The Line Officers are: Chief of Department Chris Reilly; Deputy Chief Evan Kutzin; Captain Brian Morgan; and Lieutenants Alex Naylis, Jin Yhu, Tom Shine and Steve Cooke.

ACFA Installation and Memorial Service The Atlantic County Firefighters Association held their annual reorganization meeting and memorial service on January 16, 2019, at the Egg Harbor City Fire Department. The firefighters were welcomed by outgoing President Amor ‘Skip’ Portale who is retiring, Egg Harbor City Chief Walter ‘Butch’ Kienzle, and Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson, who presented a proclamation to the family of Natalie Dempsey, the Mizpah firefighter who was lost in the line of duty on Christmas Day 2018.

Secretary Robert Mellon read the roles of those who answered their final alarm in 2018, which was followed by remarks from Executive Committee Chairman Howard Berchtold, Jr. Chairman Berchtold then presented President Portale with a plaque for his many years of service, and plaques to retiring committee persons R. Thomas Hunter and Oscar Dutch, Jr. Executive Levinson then swore in Charles R. ‘Chick’ Kisby as the new President, and the Changing of the Gavel took place as Skip presented Chick with the gavel.

Trailer Goes in Allentown

On December 1, 2018, Allentown Fire Department Station 82 was pound propane tank. Engine 82-82 arrived to the trailer completedispatched to a trailer park on Monmouth Road for a fire. Wayne Volunteer EMS Squad Celebrates 75 Years During a February 1942 cold snap, eight people lost their lives in Wayne Township in the span of a week; two died in a fire, five in a traffic accident, and one was hit by a train.

Without a first aid squad of their own, township residents at that time relied on ambulance services from neighboring communities and nearby Paterson hospitals when sickness or injury struck. A handful of concerned citizens formed the Wayne Township Memorial First Aid Squad in 1943.

A year later, with a recycled 1942 Buick

hearse for an ambulance and a facility secured — on the Oak Street property of the organization’s first president, William Taylor — the squad answered its first call September 1, 1944. Before long, the Wayne squad also began providing mutual aid to other communities.

Seventy-five years later, the squad is thriving, with 80 active members, all emergency medical technicians (EMT), answering 5,115 calls last year.

Today’s squad boasts five ambulances, a heavy rescue mobile ambulance bus, mass

casualty trailers, chiefs’ cars and two boats.

Headquarters is now on Rohrbach Memorial Way. The Hamburg Pike satellite building still allows the squad to better assist the township’s approximately 55,000 residents spread over nearly 24 square miles.
