Social Media in the Fire Service I hope you realize that Social Media is here to stay. Seventy-six percent of our friends in government reported social media enabled them to have more meaningful interactions with their constituents. We saw the use of social media become a regular tool in the 2016 election campaign. Unlike past campaigns, social media effectively helped both candidates reach audiences across the nation at all times. Social media is not new.

Blake Scott wrote an article that was published in Fire Engineering in 2013. He stated, “Social media has changed the world, and now the fire service must make a choice: adapt to the new environment or face some unpleasant consequences in the years to come.” The use of Instagram, Twitter and Facebook have become an integral part of every activity that goes on in your department.

It is no secret that I am a fan of using Facebook. My department has strict rules that the membership adheres to governing the use of social media. Our social media policy was put together by one of our chiefs.

The policy was thoroughly explained to the membership. I am privileged to be my

department’s photographer and Public Information Officer. As soon as I get home from a major call, I write a brief explanation of what happened and share it, along with a photo or two with our community.

Community interaction and comments are overwhelmingly positive. I should add that my chiefs trust my decisions and are extremely supportive of what I do.

Let’s face it, the public deserves to know what has happened in their community. The use of social media cuts down on inaccurate rumors and ultimately has rallied our community in support of their fire department. If we have a call that is serious, our community knows to go to our Facebook page to find out what happened.

Occasionally we have to remind a member that comments, and photos are my job.

Our members know that they can share whatever their PIO places on social media. As an active PIO at a scene, we welcome the media. The chief has enough to do at a working fire. The PIO can handle the media by giving them enough accurate information so that they can do their job. Their job has been in existence since the early 18th century. If

you want a truthful story about what happened at your call, give the media the facts.

Yes, there will be “fake news,” however it has been my experience that the local papers are on your side. Give them the accurate facts so that they can write accurate stories that compliment your department. Inaccurate stories usually come about when no one talks to the media and they are forced to ask bystanders for statements that may be inaccurate, at best.

For the last few years, Fire News was recognized by the Press Club of Long Island for the Best Use of Social Media. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, so that you can get an idea of how powerful social media can be. … Dennis

Evesham All-Hands Dwelling Fire

Evesham Township Taskforce 22 was alerted for a house fire on March 16, 2018. Burlington County Central Communications originally reported a single caller reporting a bedroom fire and that they were evacuating. Prior to arrival, Central advised units that police were reporting an active fire. Chief 2230 arrived to find smoke and fire issuing from an alpha side bedroom on division 2.

Engine Company 2211 stretched and Ladder 2235 opened up. The fire was brought under control quickly with no reported injuries.

Camden City 3-Alarmer A fire broke out on the property of Recycling Management Resources on Ferry Avenue in South Camden on April 14, 2018.

The weather was clear and dry with a significant variable wind.

The Camden Fire Department was dispatched to find that the blaze had spread quickly throughout the west side of the complex.

Battalion Chief Sam Balakas requested a second alarm, which eventually had all city fire stations committed along with an earlier house fire in East Camden. The companies had some water pressure problems to deal with plus the stiff wind off the Delaware River caused two recycling sheds to ignite. Mutual aid came from Camden County. It took 2-1/2 hours before the fire was knocked down. Heavy equipment had to be brought in to move large piles of waste recyclables and baled paper so firefighters couldextinguish all the flames.

Fair Lawn 2-Alarmer On February 10, 2018, the Fair Lawn Fire Department responded to Pomona Avenue for a house fire. On arrival, Chief 90 reported heavy smoke showing from a 1-1/2 story frame home and requested a second alarm for cover. Crews found a working fire in the basement and immediately stretched lines into the home to get to the seat of the fire, as the truck company vented the roof. Fire extended to the first floor but companies were able to keep it from extending through the rest of the home. At the one-hour mark command reported the main body of fire was knocked down and firefighters were opening up and hitting hot spots. The fire was placed under control with no injuries reported although the home was deemed uninhabitable.

Collapse at Hammonton Blaze

On March 9, 2018, the City of Hammonton Volunteer Fire Department responded to Bella Vita Court for a report of a structure fire. Firefighters arrived to heavy fire showing from the Alpha-Bravo side of a two-story, wood frame, single-family home. Command had the first-due truck and engine go into service with their heaviest lines, but the fire progressed until the middle of the structure collapsed. By this time all firefighters had been removed. Responding were: Hammonton 1 and 2, Elwood, Winslow Township and Collings Lakes, with Egg Harbor City and Weymouth covering.

Newark 3-Alarmer, Collapse On the evening of March 4, 2018, the Newark Fire Department responded to multiple calls of a house fire on Clinton Place. Engine 29 arrived and immediately struck the second alarm as they had a fully involved structure fire threatening both the bravo and delta exposures. Crews initiated a defense attack on the main fire building while going offensive on both the B and D as they became involved. Eventually the main fire building suffered a full collapse and heavy fire worked its way into the Bravo exposure. A third alarm was struck.

After nearly 35 minutes the Bravo exposure was evacuated to knocked down the heavy fire. Crews re-entered but were evacuated a second time and the fire remained a defensive fight. Companies remained on scene throughout the night for fire watch.

Hackensack Truck Fire Snuffed On January 31, 2018, Engines 1 and 4, Ladder 1 and Deputy 1 responded to Frederick Street for a fire in a dumpster truck. The fire was quickly knocked down and overhauled.

Diner Fire in Runnemede On January 13, 2018, a building fire was dispatched at the Philly Diner on the Black Horse Pike in Runnemede. First arriving crews reported a working fire on the roof of the diner and struck the all-hands box. The diner was open for operation when the fire was reported, but no injuries were reported.

Hackensack 2-Alarmer On February 3, 2018, the Hackensack Fire Department received multiple calls of a house fire on South Prospect Avenue. Hackensack Engine 2 arrived to heavy fire self-venting from the secondstory window of a 2-1/2 story frame. A second alarm was struck bringing Teaneck and Englewood.

Engine 2 stretched a line to the second floor and quickly knocked down the fire while Hackensack Ladder 1 and Englewood Truck 2 laddered and vented while checking for extension. The fire was placed under control in around 20 minutes. Crews remained on scene mopping up for approximately two hours.

Aberdeen Responds to House Fire On March 2, 2018, both companies from Aberdeen responded to a fire on Greenwood Avenue in the Cliffwood section of town. Companies were met with heavy fire from the B/C corner and immediately requested mutual aid to the scene. Despite limited manpower the crews were able to contain the fire to the rear of the home. Mutual aid came from Union Beach and Lawrence Harbor. Keyport First Aid also responded to the scene with their Medical Ambulance Bus for rehab.

Good Stop, Save in Clifton On February 10, 2018, the Clifton Fire Department was dispatched to Coppola Court for a garage fire attached to a residential structure. While units were en route, alarm advised that the PD units were reporting the garage heavily involved. A detective who was in the area pulled a man in his 80s from the fire. Engine 6 stretched a line into the interior and Engine 2 dropped a supply line. A secondary line was stretched and knocked down the bulk of the heavy fire from the exterior while Ladder 3 set up to vent.

Crews did a great job containing the fire with minimal fire damage to the interior of the living space.

Mutual aid came from Montclair and Passaic.

No Good Deed Goes ‌ The Saddle Brook Fire Department had a busy Presidents Day weekend with two major house fires. On February 19, 2018, the department was dispatched for a report of a fire on Spruce Avenue. On arrival, the chief reported a two-story home with the rear of the house engulfed.

As companies arrived, handlines were quickly stretched into the home on both floors knocking down fire, however, the fire had extended into the attic and burned through the roof which partially collapsed. The main body of fire was knocked down in approximately 30 minutes and the fire was placed under control in just over an hour. Firefighters were able to remove several dogs uninjured from the home and no injuries were reported. It was reported that the family was not at home at the time and were dropping off donations for the family of home that had burned two days earlier.

Roseland Stops Fuel Spill After MVA

During a heavy snow fall on February 7, 2018, the Roseland Fire Department was dispatched to the intersection of Passaic and Harrison Avenues for a MVA with an SUV versus pole and a fluid spill. Squad 2 responded as the fluid was running downhill into a storm drain. The crew from Squad 2 was able to deploy drying agent and form a dam near the storm drain to keep the fluid that got into the drain to a minimum - Fire News photo by Mark Rosetti

Orange 2-Car MVA, Fire

On March 10, 2018, the Orange Fire Department was dispatched to Interstate Highway 280 eastbound for an MVA with injuries.

Engine Co. 2, Ladder Co. 1 and Car 2 under the command of Acting Deputy Chief Micah Almendinger responded. Companies arrived to a two-vehicle accident with injuries and fire. Engine Co. 2 commenced with fire attack, while the ladder crew checked for occupants and used their metal saws to force entry to the engine compartment and trunk. Engine Co. 3 responded on special call for water supply.

Medevac for ATV Accident The volunteer fire companies of Mays Landing and Mizpah responded to Harding Highway at the Balic Winery, on March 23, 2018, to set up an LZ for a man who struck a tree with his ATV and suffered severe head trauma. Mays Landing Chief Lou DiMartine arrived and established command for Cooper 1 to fly the man, who suffered significant trauma to the right side of his head and face along with injuries to his left wrist and right leg. Assisting at the scene were Mizpah, Township of Hamilton Rescue, Township of Hamilton Police, Atlanticare Paramedics, and Cooper 1.

Bargaintown MVA The volunteer fire companies of Bargaintown and Scullville responded to the intersection of Delaware and Ridge Avenues on March 14, 2018, for a report of an MVA with entrapment. Bargaintown Chief Eugene Sharpe arrived and established command for a crash involving two passenger vehicles with one female passenger trapped. Firefighters removed the driver’s side front and rear doors along with the B-post to extricatee the trapped passenger. Once removed, the passenger was transported from the scene by EHT Ambulance. Also responding were Atlanticare Paramedics, EHT Police.

Hopatcong House Destroyed A fire destroyed a home on Maxim Drive in the Byram Cove area of Lake Hopatcong early on March, 21 2018. Firefighters found the home fully involved when they arrived, said Chief John Wilkerson. Hopatcong, Netcong, Byram and Mount Arlington responded. Water to fight the fire was transported from a fire hydrant about a mile from the scene via tankers supplied by Byram and Mount Arlington. Siding on an unoccupied home next door sustained radiant damage, and the home suffered minor damage from the flames, which blew out a window in that home. 23 Displaced by Paterson 4-Alarm

On February 7, 2018, Paterson firefighters faced a fast-moving fire that had the potential to take out an entire block. At just before 2100, companies in the 1st Battalion responded to a report of a fire on Summer Street. Multiple lines were stretched into all buildings as the trucks worked on venting the roofs. A fourth alarm was requested for manpower as all hands were heavily engaged and additional exposures were threatened. Twenty-three people were displaced, three homes suffered heavy damage and a fourth with minor damage, one firefighter suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Stirling Annual Venison Dinner

Stirling Volunteer Fire Co. firefighters held their 19th annual Venison Dinner on Saturday, March 4, 2018, in the firehouse where more than 200 people feasted on a dozen varieties of venison specialties that were prepared by the firefighters. Chairmen of this annual fund raiser was Deputy Fire Chief Al Gallo who was assisted by more than 25 Stirling firefighters. The firefighter chefs who cooked the food were Al Gallo, Joe Cerami, Albert Pepe, Troy Pytell, Craig Tuma, and Ryan Vrindten.

3-Alarm Fire in Cherry Hill

On April 5, 2018, a fire broke out in a fifth-floor apartment in the sixstory Playa del Sol Apartments on Cooper Landing Road in Cherry Hill Township. Arriving companies advanced to the fifth floor and found a heavy smoke condition in an apartment on the south end of the building. As engine company crews worked to place a line in service, a truck company crew utilized their PW can to knock down the

fire. The fire extended into an adjoining unit and a second alarm was sounded followed by a third for manpower. The Westmont Fire Company Mobile Vent Unit MVU-1 was summoned to remove smoke.

Additional manpower came from Camden and Burlington Countys.

Roseland House Fire Stopped On March 17, 2018, the Roseland Fire Department was dispatched to 2nd Street for a house fire. Police and fire units arrived to a heavily involved attached garage fire which was auto exposing into the interior of the home. Companies placed exterior lines in place to knock down the bulk of the fire as well as stretching two lines into the interior to take care of extension. Livingston responded on mutual aid.

Cat in a Tree On February 22, 2018, Evesham Ladder 2235 was dispatched for an animal rescue. En route, the dispatcher reported a cat in a tree.

Ladder 2235 raised a ladder and removed the cat to a very happy resident.

Not in a Tree On February 22, 2018, the Northfield Fire Department was dispatched to Mimi Court for a reported structure fire. The first officer arrived and found heavy smoke and fire coming from the twostory residence. Firefighters entered the structure and were able to quickly knock down the fire, and rescue a cat from the home. Somers Point, Cardiff, and the Northfield and Somers Point Ladies Auxiliaries assisted at the scene. Rehab was performed by Tricare EMS. Commercial Fire in Hackensack Early on the morning of February 12, 2018, the Hackensack Fire Department received a call reporting a smoke condition in the area of Lodi and McKinley Streets. Moments later HPD reported fire showing from the roof of a Lodi Street address. Deputy Chief Kalman reported a fire in a single-story commercial building. Companies forced entry as fire was showing from the roof across the entire front of the building. Eventually, a second alarm was requested, as several handlines were stretched into the building where crews found heavy fire in a mezzanine located above the office area. No injuries were reported and the cause was believed to be electrical in nature.

Thank You for a Great 20th Annual NJEPA Conference The New Jersey Emergency Preparedness Conference took place at Tropicana Casino Resort from April 30 to May 4, 2018.

This year celebrated the 20th year of the conference. It’s so hard to believe it all started as a one-day hurricane preparedness event with 200 participants and has grown to a week-long conference with thousands of attendees and thousands of sponsors!

The week kicked off with Training such as NAEMT's Psychological Trauma in EMS Patients (PTEP) and AWR 347 Climate Adaption Planning for Emergency Management. As the week rolled on, Breakouts began such as Overview of La Nina Winter of 2017-2018 and the National Weather Service (NWS) Hazard Simplification and coinciding hurricane deployment breakouts. EMS Response to the Opioid Epidemic and OHSP Toolbox were well attended sessions‌among many others.

The media even took interest in various sessions and covered the conference in The Press of AC and online. Check out our social media pages to read those stories.

In Firefighting, You Just Never Know‌

Laureldale 1-Car MVA

On April 14, 2018, City of Camden firefighters found out things aren’t always what they seem. While responding to a fire, firefighters forced a roll up door to find a brick wall behind it.

The volunteer fire companies of Laureldale and Mays Landing responded to mile marker 45.0 westbound on the Black Horse Pike on April 1, 2018, for an MVA with entrapment. Laureldale Chief Chris Tilley arrived and established command for the single-vehicle crash with overturn. Before command arrived, police removed the occupant and waited for the arrival of EMS. The occupant was treated and transported.

Looking for a Fire in Passaic On February 12, 2018, the Passaic Fire Department responded to Willet Street for a structure fire. The caller was unsure of the actual location. As crews circled the area, multiple calls started to come into dispatch, but companies were unable to locate the fire or the callers. Eventually, firefighters found a small structure fire at 61 Willet Street and confirmed a smoke condition and directed crews to the rear of the property. The fire on the interior was minor and quickly knocked down.

Sycamore Avenue House Fire The volunteer fire companies of Cardiff and Bargaintown responded on March 21, 2018, to Sycamore Avenue for a dwelling fire. Cardiff Chief Gil Zonge established command and reported a fire in the rear of the dwelling. Cardiff Engine 1512 stretched a line to the rear of the dwelling. Bargaintown Tender 1528’s crew advanced a line from Engine 1512 in through the front door.

Cardiff Assistant Chief William Danz III was operations officer, and oversaw the interior operations as crews had the bulk of the fire knocked down and pulled ceilings and overhauled. One firefighter was taken to the hospital for an eye injury, and Mays Landing EMS stood by at the scene. Also responding were EHT Ambulance, Mays Landing Rescue Squad, Mays Landing Fire (Covered Cardiff), EHT Fire Official, EHT Police.

Scullville Fundraiser The Scullville Volunteer Fire Company #3 hosted their third Annual Spring Fundraiser on March 24, 2018, at their station. A beef-and-beer event, a Chinese auction, 50/50, and t-shirt sale were held to support the operating budget for their fireboat, Marine 3, with roast beef provided by Juliano’s Bar and Grill, support from Circle Liquor of Somers Point, and support from many other local and national businesses. Music was provided

by Tribe. With this support and the support of the community, the fire company reached their goal. The officers and members of Scullville would like to offer a big tip-of-the-helmet to Bargaintown which stood by during the event.

Bargaintown Easter Egg Hunt Every year the Bargaintown Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary holds its annual Easter Egg Hunt, a free family event.

Bargaintown wishes to thank Chick-Fil-A Fire Road for coming out and showing their support to the community by supplying 200 chicken sandwiches as well as the Bargaintown firefighters for volunteering their time to help stuff eggs and coming out the day of the event. The 2018 Easter Egg Hunt was held on March 17, 2018, at ‘Tony’ Canale Park with approximately 150 children participating.

East Orange Structure Fire

On April 3, 2018, the East Orange Fire Department responded to a large three-story residential structure on North Maple Avenue for a reported house fire. Companies arrived to heavy smoke and fire visible on the C side on the third division that worked its way throughout the third floor.

A second alarm was struck bringing all East Orange companies to the scene. The fire was placed under control within an hour as coverage was provided by Bloomfield, Orange and Irvington.

Englewood EMS Volunteer: 57 Years and Counting Englewood resident Dick Krane doesn’t do anything half way. When he commits to something, he really commits. Krane recently celebrated 61 years of marriage with his wife, Pat, and in May 2018, marked 57 years of service with the Englewood Volunteer Ambulance Corps (EVAC).

Although no longer an active duty crew member, Krane, 81, remains embedded in the squad's activities, still serving on several of its committees.

In appreciation, EVAC members honored Krane recently for his unshakable dedication to volunteer EMS. Over the years, Krane served as the EMSCNJ’s northern area vice president and as a delegate from the organization’s Third District. He joined the convention committee in 1973 and since 1989 has served as chairman of the annual Educational Symposium and Trade Show, a huge undertaking.

“Dick has amazing energy,” said EMSCNJ President Joseph G. Walsh, Jr. “Planning for each convention starts as soon as one finishes, and Dick always has ideas to make the next one better, more fun, more engaging. He scouts potential convention locations years ahead of time, driving all over the state and meeting with hotel and venue managers to negotiate the best deals for us.”

Krane says he’s never been one to remain idle, but he never pictured himself this involved in volunteer EMS for so long.

“Initially, I was Shanghaied to join,” Krane joked. He explained that, at times, as he made sales calls, businessmen in Englewood who were squad members left their stores to answer calls, and convinced him to join them.

“I suppose it grew on me,” he said.

For Krane, community spirit is a family affair: his son, son-in-law and several grandchildren also are EMS volunteers.

“They saw how much I loved it, how involved I was and wanted to experience it for themselves,” Krane said. “Now they’re hooked, too.”

In appreciation of his decades of service with EVAC and as a U.S. Army veteran (1957-59), Krane was chosen to serve as co-Grand Marshal of Englewood’s Memorial Day parade in 2011.

All shared their experiences and offered advice to fellow emergency managers.

SCBA Confidence Training The volunteer fire companies of Bargaintown and Scullville held a joint training night on March 13, 2018, at the Bargaintown fire station. The exercise involved fun with SCBA confidence and was called Pinball Bombardment. The two companies squared off against each other in a dodgeball setting with their SCBA. Once the low air alarm sounds, each firefighter sat on the side lines and breathed down their pack until it was completely empty, with each firefighter timed on their air consumption so they knew exactly how much air time they had remaining once the alarm sounded.

Car Fire Stopped From Extending

On April 1, 2018, the Irvington Fire Department advised Newark they were receiving multiple calls for a large outside fire near a structure on Columbia Avenue. Newark dispatched a full assignment as two vehicles were found well involved at the rear of a large, three-story, multi-family wood frame on which the siding was starting to burn along with a nearby fence. A line was stretched to the rear and the fire was quickly knocked down while the truck company checked the interior and found no extension.

Rutherford Handles Car Fire On February 15, 2018 the Rutherford Fire Department was dispatched to Route 3 westbound just outside of MetLife stadium for a reported car fire. An SUV with an engine compartment fire was pulled to the right shoulder as Engines 3 and 4, along with Rescue 5, responded to the scene and extinguished the fire.

Quick Knockdown in Boonton On February 21, 2018, the Boonton and Boonton Township Fire Departments responded to Grant Street for electrical fire. Two lines were stretched.

2 Burned in Buena Vista Fire The volunteer fire companies of Richland and East Vineland responded to the Buena Vista Campground, on March 6, 2018, for a dwelling fire. Richland Chief Tony Monfredo, Jr., requested two Medevacs for two burn victims. Landisville and Minotola established LZs. Landisville’s water tender also responded.

Firefighters found the remains of two dogs. Also responding were New Jersey State Police, Buena Borough and BVT EMS and Atlantic City Electric Company.

Bargaintown Storage Fire The volunteer fire companies of Bargaintown and Cardiff were dispatched on April 5, 2018, to Ridge Avenue in the area of 9th Avenue for a structure fire. Responding firefighters arrived to find a storage building well involved. One engine and one water tender were used to extinguish the fire.

Lake Front Home Burns in Stanhope

Recently, Stanhope firefighters responded to a report of a home on fire on Musconetcong Avenue. Crews arrived to heavy fire coming from the home. Two people escaped without injury. The first-due engine stretched lines but crews were forced to back out due to heavy fire conditions. Stanhope Ladder 1 went into service as the front and rear sections of the house collapsed. Additional mutual aid units were dispatched and a draft was established for a second water supply from Lake Musconetcong. Firefighters remained on

scene well into the morning. HazMat crews from Sussex and Morris County assisted at the scene with cleanup of oil and some ammunition that was in the home. Responding were Netcong, Byram, Stanhope Police, Hopatcong and Budd Lake. Stanhope-Netcong American Legion Ambulance Corps, Lakeland Emergency Squad, the Sussex County Fire Marshal, and HazMat teams from Sussex and Morris counties as well as Picatinny Arsenal .
