Well Done Boston Responders!

On April 15, 2013, another horrific event challenged the dedication and skills of first responder when two pressure cooker bombs halted the Boston Marathon. Immediately, responders went into a different mode of operation and ran to help hundreds of people who were victims of the explosions. Three deaths resulted from this heinous act of terrorism and people were injured at the scene of this terrorist bombing.

Emergency medical technicians at the finish line were there to help runners with blisters, sprains and aches. In the past, they occasionally would spring into action when a runner had more serious medical problems such as a heart attack. Never did they expect to be in the middle of a terrorist's act and have to spring into action to save the lives of children, moms and dads, spectators and runners alike.

Many of the injuries sustained at the bombing were similar to injuries sustained by our soldiers as they continue to protect our freedom.

Watching the event unfold live on television, you got a first hand view of how all responders ran to help the victims of the incident.

They placed their lives on the line and never questioned their own mortality. I am sure thoughts of a third bomb ran through their minds as the second bomb rocked Boylston Street and Copley Square.

The lives that were saved at the Boston Marathon Bombing were a direct result of the interdisciplinary training that goes on regularly in the fire, rescue and emergency services. The Mass Casualty Training that has gone on in the past and continues to go on between all emergency responders throughout the United States was tested in Boston that day. Hospitals were ready to handle the flood of victims who came to them with injuries that were anything but routine.

Despite the three deaths and life altering injuries, many lives were saved. This was due to the constant training that YOU, the first responder takes seriously.

Fire News would like to thank everyone who responded to the call of duty at the Boston Marathon. We would also like to thank our photographers who captured the moment in a professional and sensitive manor and risked their lives along side of the responders to document history. In the end, you continue to serve the United States of America as our First Responders.

FIREFIGHTER APPRECIATION ON FULL DISPLAY FOR FALL DOVER RACE WEEKEND Over the years, many traditions have been created as part of race weekend at Dover International Speedway. Those events range from fan events, pre-race ceremony traditions and even include charitable endeavors.

And for the past five years, the fall NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the Monster Mile has been a day to show appreciation to firefighters and their families, while also raising funds for the survivors of fallen firefighters, through the sales of a hospitality ticket package partnership with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

Since the partnership’s inception, it has grown to include a number of great benefits for firefighters attending the race, including a pre-race hospitality ticket package, a firetruck parade during the pre-race ceremonies and the Firehouse Challenge, which awards the fire company with the most attendees at the race with its very own Monster trophy to keep in the station all year.

Through two years of the Firehouse Challenge, the members of Cressona Fire Company No. 1 in Cressona, Pa., have flocked to Dover to claim the trophy at back-to-back race weekends.

But while the fun of the day’s festivities creates a great atmosphere for the firefighters and their families, the most important component of the event is the money raised for the NFFF, which totals $390,365 to date.

All proceeds from hospitality ticket sales and sales of a special commemorative T-shirt are donated to the NFFF, along with gracious contributions and donations from the program's sponsors, which have included Stanley Black and Decker, Motorola, Kidde, Provident, Holmatro, PBI, BFPE and others.

Though the program and partnership between the Monster Mile and the NFFF has grown exponentially in its first five years, plans are to continue adding to the funds already raised.

The NFFF hospitality package is now on sale for the Sept. 29 “AAA 400” NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. On April 20, 2013, I visited the Memorial of the Marathon Bombing in Boston. It was amazing to see the amount of people there and the things people left in support of all the victims of what had happened on April 15, 2013. The bombing at the finish line not only brought Bostonians together but it also brought people together all around the country. Rest In Peace to eight-year old Martin Richards, 23-year old Lu Lingzi, 29-year old Krystle Campbell, and 26-year old MIT Officer Sean Collier.

Candlelight Vigil for Fallen MIT Officer Sean Collier

Wilmington residents and law enforcement members from across the region gathered on the town common for a candlelight vigil for fallen MIT Police Officer Sean Collier. Collier was killed in the line of duty by the Boston Marathon bombing suspects. In a show of solidarity the streets were lined with police officers and resi-

dents as the hearse carrying Collier’s body drove through the town common. Firefighters from the Wilmington Fire Department also lined the ramp of their station and saluted as the procession passed.

Quick Work at Derby Fire

At approximately 0845 on May 9, 2013, the Derby Fire Department was dispatched to Derby Avenue for a house fire. First companies on scene found heavy fire on the second floor and attic of a twostory wood frame multi-family house. With reports from neighbors of people trapped on the second floor, an aggressive interior attack was commenced. Primary searches proved negative and companies

were backed out to knock down the heavy fire. The fire was placed under control within 20 minutes, but not before the attic floor collapsed into the second floor making overhaul difficult. The fire appeared to have started in a second floor bedroom and has been ruled accidental. Derby received mutual aid at the scene from Shelton and Ansonia.

Pawtucket, Lincoln Respond to Blaze

Workers at the J & S Pallet Company on Lockbridge Street in Pawtucket, reported a fire on April 11, 2013. Heavy smoke was pushing out of a converted 53-foot tractor-trailer box threatening an entire stock of pallets. Lincoln Fire Department responded with Pawtucket because the town line was just behind the location.

Pawtucket Engine 1 laid about 1300 feet of LDH feeder into the scene to supply Engine 5. Lincoln Ladder 51 set up their aerial to

protect and cool a 200-pound propane tank. Lincoln Engine 4 relay pumped the hydrant to boost the water pressure. The fire kept flaring up. Firefighters working on scene used SCBA due to cyanide levels being at 50ppm and carbon monoxide levels at 120ppm. No injuries were reported and Lincoln companies remained on scene assisting Pawtucket with overhauling.

Three FFs Injured at Dudley Blaze

Just after noontime on May 2, 2013, Dudley firefighters were alerted to a reported house fire on Cross Street. The on-duty crew of three firefighters and Dudley Fire Chief Dean Kochanowski mounted up and immediately responded. Two firefighters fell prey to heat exhaustion during the firefight and were transported to Harrington Hospital at Hubbard Campus for evaluation. Another firefighter

suffered a leg injury and was also transported to the hospital from the scene. All firefighters were treated and released. Mutual aid at the fire scene was provided by the Webster, Oxford, Southbridge, Douglas, Charlton, and Auburn fire departments. The Quinebaug (CT) Volunteer FD covered the empty Dudley firehouse.

Early Morning Fire Displaces Providence Residents

Just after sunrise on May 13, 2013, Providence firefighters responded to Elma Street for a house fire. On arrival, Engine 10 found heavy smoke and fire showing from the rear of an occupied 2-1/2 story house. All occupants were out before firefighters arrived. Engine 10 stretched their line to the second floor but the fire had already spread to the cockloft. Command ordered additional companies to assist in opening up and stretching lines. As heavy fire began to spread throughout the loft, companies began to notice the roof sagging and were ordered to evacuate. Master streams were placed into service and knocked down all of the visible fire. The fire was brought under control in approximately 45 minutes. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Careless Smoking in Lincoln

Careless disposal of smoking materials is to blame for this second alarm on Front Street in the Lonsdale section of Lincoln, RI, on May 5, 2013. A passerby noticed heavy fire showing from a onestory addition that was attached to a 2-1/2 story wood frame apartment house. Captain Pat Gorman ordered a second alarm as he arrived, reporting there was heavy fire showing from the rear and extending up the Charlie side gable end of the main dwelling. The first handline was extended to the Delta side to begin attack on the heavy exterior fire. Ladder 51 threw their aerial to the Delta side roof to vent the roof. The roof team reported smoke but no fire in the attic. Interior crews found fire in the walls in a C-side second floor bedroom. The walls and ceilings were quickly opened up and wet down before the fire could travel to the third floor apartment.

Salvage and overhauling continued for an hour after Chief 4 gave the under control signal. No injuries were reported.

Fast Moving Fire in Lowell

Lowell Firefighters responded to a report of a fire on Merrimack Street around 1400 on May 4, 2013. The fast moving fire tore though the commercial building and all companies were forced to evacuate the building due to deteriorating conditions. Heavy fire

spread through the first and second floors and then broke through the roof the building. No injuries were reported at the scene and the cause of the fire was under investigation by Lowell Fire and Massachusetts State Police.

13 Departments Work Thompson Blaze

Fire crews from 13 departments responded to the K&R Auto Repair Shop on Riverside Drive in Thompson, CT, around 1900 on May 8, 2013, for a reported fire. Companies arrived to find heavy fire conditions in a one-story irregularly-shaped wood and concrete block building. The building was loaded with numerous types of fuel, lubricants and vehicles. Flames were shooting 30 feet into the air on arrival of fire apparatus. A defensive operation was placed into service along with a tanker shuttle. Dump ponds were placed in

front of the property for water supply. A tower ladder, ladder pipe, deck guns, and handlines flowed heavy streams for about one hour to knock the fire down. Fire departments that responded to the scene included Community, East Thompson, West Thompson, Thompson Hill, Quinebaug, Muddy Brook, Woodstock, Attawaugan, East Putnam and Bungay from Connecticut, West Glocester in RI, and Webster and Dudley from MA. - Fire News photos by Ken LaBelle and Alan Brackett

Church Burns in Willimantic

Around 1830 on May 16, 2013, Willimantic Fire was dispatched to St. Mary's Church on Valley Street for smoke coming from the building. First due found heavy smoke coming from the roof line of the building, and a third alarm was requested. Crews made entry with a 2-1/2 inch hose line to attack the fire. After about 30 minutes the conditions deteriorated and command evacuated the building and went defensive with aerial devices. The companies that

responded were Willimantic, North Windham, Windham Center, South Windham, Mansfield, Columbia, Scotland, Hampton, Andover, Chaplin, Hebron, Lebanon, South Coventry, WCMH Medic, Providence Canteen, Red Cross, State FMO, Windham County Coordinators and the Region 4IMT. - Fire News photos by Robert Ladd

Three-Alarm Blaze Destroys House in Groton

A three-alarm fire on May 10, 2013, destroyed a house overlooking Lost Lake in Groton, MA. Firefighters responded to this blaze on Boathouse Road shortly after noon. On arrival heavy smoke was visible and a police officer who was first on scene said he tried to open the door but the heat at the door was too much. Firefighters laid a supply line from a half-mile away as the hydrant nearest the

home was inoperable. An exposure building did sustain heat damage. Mutual aid came from Littleton, Westford, Ayer, Pepperell and Dunstable. The family dog and cat were rescued from the house, and the fire is under investigation. The home was a total loss.

Dudley Firefighters Battle Store Fire

On June 7, 2013, as a monsoon-type rain washed over south central Worcester County, Dudley firefighters were alerted to a fire in a gas station convenience store on West Main Street. Firefighters had a difficult time getting ahead of the wind-driven fire as it completely engulfed the attic and roof portions of the building. Mutual aid

came from Webster, Southbridge and Oxford. After the visible fire was knocked down, extensive overhaul operations began with crews exercising extreme caution while working within the building.

Firefighters remained on scene until shortly after 0400, overhauling and providing a fire watch.

Truck Fire in Leominster

Close to Home in Hartford

Recently, a small landscape truck caught fire. The driver was going up a hill and noticed smoke coming from under the hood. On arrival, Leominster Deputy Chief Jeffrey Davis reported the engine compartment fully involved. Engine 4 and Ladder 1 arrived on scene and extinguished the blaze.

Fast Moving Blaze in North Providence

On April 18, 2013, a fast moving three-alarm fire at K & R Auto Salvage located on Smithfield Road in North Providence, destroyed several cars, tires, and the rear of the main structure. Heavy fire and black smoke were showing from the rear of the salvage yard as apparatus arrived. Water supply was established and attack lines went into operation trying to keep the fire out of the 200 x 300 twostory structure. A second and third alarm was struck, bringing mutual aid to the scene from Smithfield, Johnston, Pawtucket,

Lincoln, Providence, and Cranston. Providence Tower 2 and Ladder 3 set up on the Charlie/Delta side with their master streams.

Several hose streams were played on tanks containing diesel, gasoline, oil, and anti-freeze fluids. The bulk of the heavy fire was contained in about 45 minutes with the fire being placed under control in 90 minutes. EMS transported one injury to Rhode Island Hospital. The cause of the fire was possibly a worker using a power tool near combustibles.

Home Total Loss in Shelton

At approximately 1020 on May 4, 2013, the Shelton Fire Department was dispatched to High Plains Road for a house fire.

First companies on scene found heavy fire from the rear of a twostory wood frame colonial that had extended into the first and second floors. Companies made an aggressive interior attack but were pulled out due to a water supply problem. All four Shelton fire com-

panies operated at the blaze that left the home a total loss. Nobody was home at the time of the fire, but unfortunately the family lost their dog to the fire. Shelton received mutual aid from Derby at the scene, as well as station coverage from Monroe, Trumbull and Ansonia.

Water Problems at Winsted Fire

Two-Alarm at FourStory in Springfield

At 1217 on April 21, 2013, firefighters from Winsted, CT, were dispatched for a structure fire on Thibault Street. The first-due company reported a two-story, wood frame, multi-family dwelling with heavy smoke and fire showing from the second floor. Command requested a second alarm and mutual aid from Norfolk for an RIT unit; Torrington for an additional ladder company; and engine companies from Colebrook, Pleasant Valley and New Hartford for station coverage and work. With initial water supply problems, the fast moving fire overtook the rear of the structure and spread through the attic space prompting evacuation. With multiple handlines and the ladder pipes on the Winsted and Torrington aerials the crews were able to get the fire knocked down but not before the main fire building sustained heavy structural damage and the two exposures had their siding melted by the extreme heat.

Stubborn Fire Guts Webster Apartment House

Five occupants of a Webster apartment house narrowly escaped a three alarm fire that occurred on Goddard Street at about 0400 on May 31, 2013. One of the occupants, the owner of the three-story dwelling, jumped from a second floor window and suffered a hip injury and was transported to the hospital. First-due Webster firefighters arrived to find fire showing from the first floor through the roof on three side. Firefighters placed hoselines between the burning apartment house and the buildings on either side, which were showing damage from radiant heat. Chief Hickey requested mutual aid from the neighboring towns of Dudley, Oxford, Douglas and Southbridge. As the outside fire companies arrived, more hoselines were stretched, and firefighters finally gained the upper hand on this difficult and stubborn fire. The Special Signal Fire Association's Providence Canteen responded to the scene and provided firefighters with food and beverages to help them rehabilitate after a difficult job.

Commercial Building Burns in Worcester

On May 14, 2013 around 2230 Worcester Fire Alarm Office received calls for a commercial building fire at the Gibson Dairy Store warehouse and distribution center on Sunderland Road.

Engine 7 arrived to find heavy fire throughout the one-story irregular shaped wood frame structure. A quick second alarm was struck, as there were several exposures in extreme danger. Engine 7 used its deck gun and several handlines to attempt to keep the fire to one building. Tower 7 set up their master stream. Ladder 5 took a position on the delta side and used their pre-piped waterway to work on the loading dock area. A third alarm was struck for manpower at the scene. Several more handlines were stretched to the Bravo side to cool and protect propane cylinders. The roof eventually collapsed.

Fire Gets 1 building, 0 Cars in North Leominster

Recently, a passerby called the fire department reporting smoke coming from a used car dealership at Prospect and Main Streets in North Leominster. The box went out for Engines 3, 4, Ladder 1 and Rescue 1 with C-2 Deputy Jeffrey Davis in charge. Lt. Anthony Lefebvre called a working fire as smoke pushed out from all sides of the structure. The fire appeared to have started in the middle of the building and extended into the attic. Firefighters had the fire knocked down in about 30 minutes and remained on scene to overhaul. On scene mutual aid came from Fitchburg and Lunenburg.

The building suffered extensive damage to the interior and no damage to any of the autos.

Confused Witness in Woonsocket

A passerby reported smoke from a vacant dwelling on Olo Street in the Fairmount section of Woonsocket on May 21, 2013. The caller gave the wrong address and arriving firefighters reported nothing showing in the area. A vehicle pulled up stating that the house down the road was on fire. Heavy fire was venting out of the rear of the structure as apparatus arrived. The house was boarded up and appeared vacant. The fire was rolling in the basement and was beginning to extend up to the first floor. A quick attack knocked most of the fire down in about 10 minutes. Ladder companies vented the roof over the rear step down section of the house finding smoke and heat but no fire. Fire was found in the second floor rear walls as the room was overhauled. A line was put into action hitting the hot spots bringing the fire under control.

Madison EMS

Madison EMS has taken delivery of a new ambulance and new paramedic fly-car. The ambulance, a 2011 Dodge, constructed by PL Custom is replacing the service’s old “804” that was donated to Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department of New York following super storm Sandy. While nearing its replacement date, Madison EMS donated the older ambulance to the BCVFD after they lost all

their ambulances to the storm. Additionally, Madison EMS has replaced their aging Ford Escape Hybrid paramedic fly-car with a new 2013 Ford Expedition. The new fly-car was put in service at the beginning of June.

Massive Brush Fire in Princeton Recently, a massive brush fire, started by sparks coming off the wheels of a passing train, in Princeton, Massachusetts, drew firefighters from across the region as it burned six locations over a nearly three-mile span. The fire never endangered any homes, but its location off the tracks required firefighters to drag hoses deep into the woods, a labor-intensive job that required a lot of manpower.

Firefighters from 28 towns – some as far away as Upton and Southbridge, near the Connecticut border – responded to help fight the fire with about 50 trucks. More than 150 firefighters were on scene spread out over the fire area.

Brush Fire Doused in Douglas On April 16, 2013, a backyard brush pile ignited causing a wind driven brush fire on West Street in Douglas, MA. The Mendon Fire Tower also spotted a column of pushing smoke around the same time. The tower crew radioed Uxbridge FD that they had smoke pushing from the area of Route 16 and West Street.

Uxbridge Forestry 1 and Tanker 1 responded and found nothing on their side. Meanwhile, Douglas FD also received calls for their side of West Street for the same. Douglas Car 1 found a fast moving brush fire behind a residence. Douglas sent a brush truck, engine and tanker to the scene. The Uxbridge units also responded to assist. Second Fire in Strip Mall Shortly after 2230 on May 5, 2013, the Bridgeport Fire Department was dispatched to Park Avenue for a building fire. Engine 3 arrived first on scene and found a one-story commercial vacant strip mall with heavy fire and smoke showing from the rear. The fire spread to all of the structure's four storefronts via the cockloft space before being knocked down shortly after. This building was also the scene of a previous fire.

Three-Alarmer in Fitchburg

On April 28, 2013, a fast moving fire on Lincoln Street in Fitchburg destroyed a two-story building. A large column of smoke could be seen as the apparatus turned onto Lunenburg Street. On arrival Deputy Chief David Rousseau called for the second alarm bringing an engine and ladder from Leominster to the fire. Prior to Leominster arriving the fire was threatening two exposure buildings from intense heat so a third alarm was sounded, bringing Lunenburg and Westminster to the fire. Firefighters immediately went to defensive operations as the original fire building was well involved. The building had a car and motorcycle and other items inside. Everything was a total loss and no injuries were reported.

Quick Work in Woonsocket

On April 18, 2013, a second floor fire in a multi-apartment building on Greene Street in the Bernon Section of Woonsocket required two alarms to bring under control. Companies arrived to find smoke showing from the two-story wood framed structure. Attack lines were stretched to the second floor Bravo/Charlie rooms and quickly knocked the bulk of the fire down. The fire did extend into the attic space above the fire rooms. Ladder companies opened the roof in two spots releasing the trapped brown smoke. Roof crews reported that they had fire rolling in the shed roof dormer space.

Interior troops opened up the ceiling trying to expose the blaze.

Quick-thinking aggressive work kept the fire from destroying the structure. The blaze was placed under control in 30 minutes. Out of town companies covered the empty firehouses.

Brush Fire Extends to House in Saugus

Saugus, MA, firefighters responded to a fast moving brush fire that extended to an occupied house on Frost Road on April 6, 2013. The house sustained extensive damage due to an initial brush fire that was fueled by strong winds and ignited the rear of the house. Two alarms were struck by the Saugus Incident Commander, Captain Shea, which brought area departments to the scene to assist with knockdown.

Flash Over at Condo Fire Ayer, Littleton and Harvard firefighters made a great stop at a mid-day condo complex fire. Firefighters arrived on scene to heavy smoke showing out of the front, when a room flashed over and heavy fire rolled out of a picture window. An attack line was stretched up into the room and the fire was quickly knocked down. The fire is under investigation by the Ayer Police and the State Fire Marshal's office. One person was slightly burned and transported to the hospital.

Shooting, Body, Fire in Bridgeport

Shortly before 2230 on April 30, 2013, the Bridgeport Fire Department was dispatched to the corner of Park Avenue and Worth Street for a house fire. Engine 3 was first on scene reporting heavy fire showing from the third floor A-side of a 2-½ story wood frame. The fire quickly turned to a crime scene when a shooting

took place in a vehicle close to fire apparatus operating at the scene.

The fire was quickly knocked down and confined to the front section of the third floor, but a body was found in the debris a night later on May 1. Police investigators are looking into this as a possible homicide.

Two Apartment Buildings Destroyed in Northbridge

A fast moving fire destroyed two three-story apartment buildings on the corners of Church Avenue and Cross Place in the Rockdale section of Northbridge, MA, on May 4, 2013. A Northbridge Police Officer arrived first and reported heavy fire in two dwellings. All of the 12 families were reportedly out safely. Fire companies used big lines to attempt to knock down the heavy overlapping fire in the alleyway between the two buildings. The fire began running the sidewalls up to the eaves of both structures. Second and third alarms were called as heavy smoke pushed from the buildings. Companies attempted an interior attack but were beat back by the fire's progression. Mutual aid ladder companies surrounded all corners of the houses as the roofs of both residences began to chug heavy black smoke and the roof of one building began to fail and collapse. Command requested a Worcester Country District 7 Strike Team to the scene for manpower. Approximately 10 towns helped at the scene, including Sutton, Douglas, Grafton, Uxbridge, Upton and Leicester, plus the state Department of Fire Services and a canteen truck from Providence.

Firefighters worked for several hours to get the fire under control.

Three Car MVA in Bridgeport At approximately 1015 on May 28, 2013, Bridgeport Rescue 5, Ladder 11, Engine 4, Battalion 1, and a safety officer were dispatched to State Street in the area of Iranistan Avenue for an MVA rollover with possible extrication. First units on scene found a three-car MVA with heavy damage and one overturned vehicle.

One person was trapped in one of the vehicles and extricated.

79-Year Old “Arborist� Injured in Holliston On April 11, 2013, Holliston, MA, firefighters along with U Mass Medical Life Flight personnel transported a 79-year old woman to a trauma center after a tree she was trying to cut down fell on top of her. Holliston firefighters and a neighbor managed to free the woman from under the tree before transporting her to the landing zone.

One Injured in Warwick MVA On the afternoon of June 3, 2013, Warwick, RI, firefighters responded to Route 95 North, in the area of Exit 14, for an MVA involving an auto and tank truck with possible fire. On arrival, Ladder 1 reported no fire but one person heavily entrapped in the auto. Members of the Special Hazards crew arrived on scene and started extrication. Battalion 1 arrived on scene and reported to Fire Alarm that he wanted RIH notified of a severe trauma patient but that it would be a prolonged extrication. Companies worked for more than 40 minutes to remove the occupant from the car. The person was transported with unknown injuries. An additional engine company was special called to help with fluid leaking from the cab section of the trailer. There was no leak from the trailer's contents.

Five third floor residents were rescued over ground ladders as heavy fire was erupting from the front of a residence on Hitchcock Road in Worcester’s Webster Square section of the city on May 4, 2013. First arriving companies struck a second alarm as they had heavy rolling fire from the first floor front of this three-story balloon constructed wood frame apartment building. The fire was overlapping upwards through the front porches to the roofline.

Black choking smoke was erupting from the entire structure as the firefighters made the rescues over ground ladders. Hose lines were aggressively placed into action on all floors trying to get a handle on the fast moving blaze. Ladder companies opened the roof to allow the super heated gases to vent off of the interior crews.

Firefighters made their way to the third floor attic scuttle and reported that the fire had extended upwards and was now rolling in the loft.

They had a handline trying to get a knock down from the hatch. The

OIC struck a third alarm due to the amount of fire and size of the structure. The fire began to self vent through the roof line on sideA, but was quickly contained by Ladder 3’s master stream.

Companies worked all floors opening up and extinguishing the heavy fire before it could destroy the rest of the building. Aggressive operations had the fire under control in roughly two hours. Seven residents were transported to local hospitals for evaluation purposes. The building appeared to be a total loss. The fire appears to have been sparked by a candle that spread to a window curtain on the first floor.

Smoky Dwelling Fire Challenges Charlton Firefighters

A very smoky three-alarm fire in a two-story multiple family dwelling in Charlton on May 20, 2013, caused major damage to the North Main Street home, injured one firefighter, and required help from surrounding communities to bring under control. At approximately 1130, on a very busy evening, Charlton Fire Alarm struck an alarm for black smoke coming out of the residence located next to Charlton Fire's unmanned Station #2. As the first-due engine arrived, they were greeted by heavy smoke blanketing the areas and fire showing at one window on the second floor. Charlton jakes immediately stretched an attack line to the second floor where they

encountered heavy fire conditions upon entering. Charlton Fire Chief Charles E. Cloutier, Jr., knew he would eventually need some additional water and manpower and requested mutual aid to the scene from Dudley, Southbridge, Sturbridge, and Spencer. Webster EMS sent an ambulance and a crew from Leicester covered the empty Charlton fire station. One Charlton firefighter was injured; he was treated at the scene for a second degree burn to the hand.

Suspicious Fire in Milford

Rain Helps in South Windsor

An occupied two-story apartment building was the scene of a suspicious fire on May 18, 2013 around 0400 in Milford, MA. The residents were home at the time of the blaze and the fire was set in the basement with other points of origin on the first and second floors.

Milford companies arrived to find heavy smoke showing. The incident commander requested a second alarm as a broken hydrant was discovered. Water supply was established a few streets over.

Several lines were stretched to each level of the house and extensive overhauling continued for hours after knock down to confirm that there was extension. The investigation is ongoing. MA Fire Academy Rapid Intervention Class

The Massachusetts Fire Academy held a Rapid Intervention Class for local departments in Belmont, MA, on May 2, 2013.
