Wise and Shipps Victory in Jesus (Hymn # 627) I heard an old, old story, how a Savior came from glory, how He gave His life on Calvary to save a wretch like me. I heard about His groaning, of His precious blood’s atoning, then I repented of my sins and won the victory. O victory in Jesus, my Savior forever! He sought me and bought me with His redeeming blood. He loved me ere I knew Him and all my love is due Him. He plunged me to victory beneath the cleansing flood.
When We All Get to Heaven (Hymn # 548) Sing the wondrous love of Jesus, sing His mercy and His grace: In the mansions bright and blessed He’ll prepare for us a place. When we all get to Heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be! When we all see Jesus, we’ll sing and shout the victory! Glory to His Name (choir only) Down at the cross where my Savior died, down where for cleansing from sin I cried, Oh, there to my heart was the blood applied; glory to His Name! Glory to His Name, glory to His Name! There to my heart was the blood applied; glory to His Name!
I’ll Fly Away I’ll fly away, O glory, I’ll fly away; when I die, hallelujah, by and by, I’ll fly away!

BLUEGRASS and STAINED GLASS Our church website contains an impressive description of the three stained glass windows of FBC. The pictures and words there assist the observer to understand the artistry and symbolism of the stained glass images. The website article begins with these words: “The Sanctuary at First Baptist Church is enhanced by stained glass windows designed to influence, to inspire, and to stimulate the worshiper. The sheer magnitude of the windows coupled with their designs tend to draw the viewer into the swirling colors and shapes that express the Christian message.” The article goes on to describe the symbolism of the south window (bursting with creativity) and of the north window (peace and serenity). South Window Today’s program represents an interesting coupling, bluegrass with stained glass. The latter can typically be linked to the great classical tradition of sacred music (a cappella choral music, pipe organ, musical compositions for the church that span the centuries). The former is readily understood as being immediately accessible to the ear, music which North Window invites toe-tapping, and a style that easily connects us to our roots as Southerners. The desire of our Music Ministry is for the worshiper to delight in both. Our preparations this summer have helped us to experience the joy and peace that occur when God’s presence is acknowledged and the name of Jesus is praised, whatever music we employ as a means of worship. Our choir and orchestra have reveled in the preparations for today’s concert with as much energy as when they were presenting Mendelssohn’s ELIJAH this past Spring! Early in our learning process I shared with the choir and band several definitions of bluegrass. Answers.com describes it as “a type of folk music that originated in the southern United States, typically played on banjos and guitars and characterized by rapid tempos and jazz like improvisation.” If you look it up in the dictionary, bluegrass has this definition: “any of the various grasses of the genus Poa, including many valuable lawn and pasture plants, such as Kentucky bluegrass, and also some weeds.” (I smiled at that one!) But perhaps the most telling definition for our purposes today is from Bill Monroe, the “father of bluegrass music,” who described bluegrass music as “Scottish bagpipes and ole-time fiddlin’. It’s Methodist and Holiness and Baptist. It’s blues and jazz, and it has a high lonesome sound. It’s plain music that tells a good story. It’s played from my heart to your heart, and it will touch you. Bluegrass is music that matters.” All of this brings me to a word about that third stained glass window in our sanctuary, the one that holds high significance theologically, aesthetically and even geographically. Centrally located in the baptistry, just above the choir, this particular stained glass window depicts the cross. Using similar colors as the side windows, it artistically connects the south window’s wonder at God’s creative power with the north window’s view of God’s eternal glory. The meaning of our music today, whether it be traditional bluegrass played and sung, or creative hymn arrangements shared by the orchestra and choir, or even sophisticated rhythms and harmonies of “newly composed” gospel, is that the cross of Jesus Christ stands at the center of all we do. Redemption in Christ is the thread uniting us. Bluegrass and Stained Glass indeed! Let’s embrace both. Billy Orton Minister of Music and Worship First Baptist, Huntsville
