King George V and Queen Mary in Bombay before the Delhi durbar to mark the king’s coronation in 1911.

he coronation ceremony Charles III is about to go through reflects how monarchy has developed since Saxon times, but it still carries many vestiges of Britain’s imperial past.

In the 18th century, the royal title changed from “King of England” to “King of the United Kingdom”, as successive Acts of Union joined England, Scotland and Ireland into one political unit. However, the biggest change in the royal title came in 1876, when the Royal Titles Act made Queen Victoria Empress of India. This gave her authority even over those areas of India which were not formally subject to British rule.

To give this change of title a formal announcement in India, the British authorities staged what became the first of three durbars – ceremonial events held in the British Raj to formally proclaim the imperial title.

Queen Victoria’s was held in 1877, the year following the act, but Edward VII’s and George V’s were held in conjunction with their coronations.

Elizabeth II’s silver jubilee in 1977 was preceded by ‘stuff the jubilee’ protests, but still proved a success.

The unexpectedly warm public responses to her subsequent jubilees, & especially to her funeral, might suggest that many British are secretly more royalist than polling would suggest

The viceroy of India in 1877, Lord Lytton, concocted the original durbar from a mixture of Persian, Mughal and English ceremonial traditions, as a formal proclamation of the queen’s title. When her son became Edward VII in 1901, a bigger durbar was organised to proclaim his imperial title – although, like his mother, Edward remained in London.

In 1911, George V and Queen Mary travelled to India for an elaborately staged coronation durbar, where they would take centre stage. This raised tricky questions of protocol. George’s coronation in Westminster Abbey invested him with all his imperial titles, so what would be the impact of being “crowned” in India? Would it mean that his successors would not be emperors unless they held a durbar?

And what did it mean for his predecessors who had not attended theirs?

The crown of England was not allowed to leave the country, so a special crown was constructed for George V to wear in India, while Queen Mary wore her “best diadem” – a heavily ornamented headband. They sat sweating under the Delhi sun in their heavy coronation robes, furs and all.

In the end, the Delhi durbar consisted of Indian princes paying homage to the king-emperor in a ceremony that owed as much to European feudalism as it did to Indian tradition. Plans for George VI to have an Indian durbar were postponed in the post-abdication sense of general exhaustion, and abandoned as war loomed.

CORONATION AND THE COMMONWEALTH

The 1931 Statute of Westminster formalised the evolution of some former colonies into selfgoverning dominions within a British commonwealth. Both George VI and Elizabeth II were crowned as monarchs over the UK and of territories overseas. The coronation oath, a legal requirement dating back to the Coronation Oath Act of 1688, has been amended on various occasions, taking account of former colonies which have become republics.

The oath Charles III will take has been amended slightly to cover his duties to his other kingdoms by agreement with their governments. Even so, for the king of Canada to be crowned in London is a remind-

@JPNadda

er that the modern monarch’s title still reflects the old empire.

ELEMENTS OF EMPIRE

Even the medieval roots of the coronation have elements of empire built into them. The Stone of Scone, which will be placed beneath the coronation chair, was removed from Scotland by Edward I as a symbol of Scotland’s subjugation to England. Scottish nationalists demanded the stone’s return to Scotland for years.

When John Major acceded to their wishes in 1996, it was on condition that the stone would return to Westminster for future coronations – a gesture some see as an unwelcome remnant of England’s imperial hold over Scotland, though others regard it as a symbol of unity.

In a nod to Welsh nationalist feeling, King Charles’s coronation will also include the kyrie (Lord Have Mercy) performed in Welsh.

One item of the crown jewels is a stark reminder of empire –but it will notably be missing from the coronation ceremony. The Koh-i-Noor diamond was taken by the British after their wars with the Sikh kingdom of Punjab, and presented to Queen Victoria in 1849. It was reshaped by Prince Albert and fitted into the crown jewels. Both Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary wore it at their coronations, though Queen Mary, tactfully, did not wear it for the 1911 coronation durbar.

Seeing the diamond as symbol of British imperial acquisitiveness, the Indian government has demanded its return, though, historically, both Pakistan and Iran could also lay claim to it. Camilla, the Queen Consort, has decided to be crowned in Queen Mary’s crown, from which the famous diamond has been removed. The controversy about the Koh-i-Noor will doubtless

continue, but won’t intrude on this coronation ceremony.

The biggest move away from imperial tradition has been in the compilation of the guest list. In the past, the only rulers to receive an invite were those of British overseas territories, such as Queen Salote of Tonga, who delighted the crowds in 1953 by braving the rain in an open-top carriage and scorning an umbrella.

Charles III has departed from precedent by issuing invitations to monarchs from Europe and the Middle East, regardless of whether or not they had ties to the British empire. Some other heads of state are also attending, though the US will be represented by the first lady, Jill Biden, rather than the president.

At a time when polling suggests declining support for the monarchy, especially among the young, the coronation might seem an irrelevant, if colourful, distraction from more pressing concerns.

There has been similar indifference before other royal events. Elizabeth II’s silver jubilee in 1977 was preceded by “stuff the jubilee” protests, but still proved a popular success. The unexpectedly warm public responses to her subsequent jubilees, and especially to her funeral, might suggest that many British are secretly more royalist than polling would suggest.

By inviting representatives of a wide range of ethnic groups and different faiths to participate in the ceremony, the king is turning his coronation into a reflection of his diverse and decidedly post-imperial kingdom. The coronation is still not entirely free of echoes of empire, but it represents an important stage in the modern monarchy’s move away from its shadow.

Not `45 cr, but `171 cr spent on Delhi CM’s ‘palace’, says Congress

Delhi Education Minister Atishi Marlena with other AAP leaders in a press conference, in New Delhi, on Sunday.

New Delhi (PTI): The Congress on Sunday alleged that the amount spent on Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s residence was `171 crore and not `45 crore as his government had to buy additional flats for officers whose houses had to be either demolished or vacated for the expansion of the CM’s residential complex.

Accusing Kejriwal of faking a simple lifestyle and instead spending

crores on his residence, Congress spokesperson Ajay Maken said that in contrast to this, the epitome of simplicity in Delhi was his party leader and former chief minister Sheila Dikshit.

“The amount spent by the whole cabinet of Sheila Dikshit on their homes in 15 years of its rule is no match to the amount spent by Arvind Kejriwal on the renovation of his palace,” Maken alleged.

Next R-Day Parade could see women contingents

New Delhi (PTI): Next year’s Republic Day Parade here could see allwomen marching and band contingents with authorities working on such a proposal for the ceremonial event to be held at Kartavya Path, defence sources said.

The defence ministry, in March, had circulated an office memorandum to the three services and various ministries and departments on the planning for the 2024 parade, they said.

The memorandum mentioned such a proposal being considered and added that a “debriefing meeting” was held under the chairmanship of the defence secretary in early February, the sources said.

After deliberations, it has been decided that the Republic Day Parade 2024 will have only women participants in the contingents (marching and band), tableaux and other performances during the parade at

the Kartavya Path, says the memorandum. A few all-women contin-

gents, and women officers, including those leading military contin-

gents comprising men, have taken part in the annual parade on Rajpath (now Kartavya Path) in the last few years. India showcased its military might and vibrant cultural heritage during the 74th Republic Day Parade held on January 26 this year, with ‘Nari Shakti’ being a dominant theme.

The Indian Air Force marching contingent of 144 air warriors was led by a woman officer, with three supernu-

merary male officers in the 2023 parade, which was the first Republic Day celebrations held at the ceremonial boulevard since the revamping of the Central Vista and renaming of Rajath last year.

The first Republic Day celebrations were held in 1950 at the Irwin Stadium (renamed Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium), and since 1951, the ceremonial parade has been taking place on Rajpath.

Unseasonal rains hit sales of cooling appliances in Raj

Large parts of the State witnessed below-normal temperatures over the last two months due to rains & thunderstorms

Jaipur (PTI): While a relatively cool start to the summer season in Rajasthan due to unseasonal rains has most people thanking the weather gods, traders selling air conditioners and coolers are feeling the heat due to weak

sales.

Large parts of Rajasthan witnessed below-normal temperatures over the last two months due to rains and thunderstorms triggered by back-to-back western disturbances, weather systems that originate in the Mediterranean region and bring unseasonal rainfall to northwest India.

The unseasonably cool weather has affected the sale of cooling appliances.

According to Sachin Gupta, president of Jayanti Market here, the

sale of air conditioners has dropped 40 per cent compared to last year and that of coolers has

seen a 60 per cent decline.

“The start of the season was good in Febru-

ary but soon after Holi, when the weather started changing, sales started slowing down.

Throughout March and April, sales were low because the temperature hovered around 30-32 degrees Celsius,” said Gupta, who is also a distributor of air conditioners.

Companies are also running various offers, including cashback offers, to boost sales, he said. Ashutosh Joshi, who sells coolers, said there was a shortage of coolers in the market last year and the same situation was expected this year.

“However, March and April have been dull for

us. Now the temperature has started increasing and we expect sales to pick up,” he said.

Cooler temperatures have also hit potters’ earnings.

Mukesh Prajapat, a potter in Gajsinghpura, said he usually sells around 1,500 earthen pots from February to June but has only sold 150 so far this year.

This is because of rains keeping the temperature in check, he said. Bageshwari Devi, a customer visiting Prajapat’s shop, said she didn’t feel the need to

buy an earthen pot until now.

“Because of cooler weather in March and April, I didn’t feel the need to buy an earthen pot. Now that the temperature is starting to rise, I have come to buy one,” she said.

Traders and potters can expect sales to pick up soon as the meteorological department has predicted warmer days ahead. The weather office has forecast dry weather and an increase in day temperatures over the next three days.

They distributed money in Rajasthan and they are not taking the money back now. Able & talented Raj IAS await Central deputation!

Rajendra Chhabra

Jaipur: For the past some time, Rajasthan cadre officials are eagerly awaiting central deputation as well as being empanelled, and picked for posting. This is a story of eight IAS officials. The recent issue is of empanelment on the post of Additional Secretary. After the review meeting, the Appointment Committee of Cabinet, on April 24, took out approval order for IAS of 1995-97 batch for Additional Secretary

post. But in this, our three officers - Shikhar Agrawal, Dinesh Kumar and Rajesh Yadav’s names were missing. Among these, it was a surprise for the entire Rajasthan cadre officials that Rajesh Yadav was not considered.

Rajesh had gone to Delhi in March 2022 after becoming JS. Generally, a JS serving in Delhi for one year is empanelled for the post of Additional secretary, & yet Rajesh Yadav was left out.

Similarly, Shikhar Agrawal (1993 batch) and Dinesh Kumar (1996

batch) returned to Rajasthan cadre after serving at the Centre as DS and JS. Both the officials are eagerly awaiting their empanelment for the post of Additional Secretary. Several review lists have been released, and yet, even in the latest review list, both the officials have been left. Whereas, their

junior IAS of 1995 batch are already working on the post of Additional Secretary. Moreover, capable, meritorious & brilliant officer of 2006 batch, Gaurav Goyal’s non-empanelment has also been considered a surprising and uncommon development whereas, his batch mate IAS, in other state

cadres, have been empanelled.

Now let us talk about posting and appointments. People have not forgotten how long Sudhansh Pant had to wait for becoming Secretary.

1993 batch IAS Sandeep Verma is awaiting a call from Delhi for the post of Additional Secretary and the state government has given its NOC nearly six months back.

In this time, three lists for appointment on the post of Additional Secretary have come, but Sandeep’s name featured in none of them,

Gehlot while addressing a public meeting at the inflation relief camp at Mandrayal village in Karauli on Sunday, said that his government is benefiting the people of the state through public welfare schemes and providing relief from rising inflation.

Gehlot said that the government has left no stone unturned in the all-round development of the common man. In the state budget, he said, efforts have been made to provide relief to every areas of the state including Karauli district.

Gehlot said that more than 300 new colleges have been opened by the state government in the present tenure.

“CM’s statement...

In the camp, the Chief Minister inspected departmental stalls based on public welfare schemes and talked to the beneficiaries and handed over the CM’s Guarantee Card to them. During the Karauli visit, Gehlot also vsited Shaili wale Hanuman temple & participated in Murti Pran Pratishtha ceremony. Minister Ramesh Chand Meena said that every village has been benefited by the schemes and development works of the government.

Ministers PL Meena, Water Mahendrajit Singh Malviya, Pramod Jain Bhaya, Lakhan Singh, Govind Singh Dotasara, Mool Chand Meena, Bharosilal Jatav, District Collector Ankit Kumar Singh,SP Narayan Singh were also present.

The truth is that he has made such outrageous and untrue allegations in his fury because of the rebellion happening in his own party and the mass base slipping away,” she said. Raje said that as far as horse-trading is concerned, Ashok Gehlot himself is the mastermind behind it. “He did this in 2008 and 2018 as he was in minority. At that time neither BJP nor Congress got a majority. At that time, if we wanted, we too could have formed the government, but it was against the principles of the BJP. On the contrary, Gehlot formed the government both the times by arranging MLAs through his transactions,” she said. To avoid the historic defeat in 2023 elections, he is creating such fabricated stories, which is unfortunate and this trick of his is not going to be successful.

you have spent anything, I will give that part or I will get it from AICC (All India Congress Committee),” he said. Gehlot alleged that if the MLAs did not return the money, they will always be under pressure from Amit Shah. “He is the Union home minister, he will intimidate...in Maha-

rashtra he divided Shiv Sena,” Gehlot alleged. He said that he was made the Chief Minister by the party for a third time and it was his duty to take all along and forget past happenings and ensure the return of the party to power in the assembly elections, slated for later this year.

Priyanka leaves for K’taka after 2-day stay in R’bore

which is a surprise.

Similarly, it has been long time since Praveen Gupta, Ajeetabh Sharma and Subeer Kumar were issued NOC for becoming JS, but no one knows the reason why these officials are not being picked. Whereas, Praveen and Ajeetabh’s batches have been freezed because officials junior to them, have become Additional Secretary. In terms of ability and talent, our IAS are second to none, and the cases of Sandeep and Shikhar are utmost serious.

The royal red lehenga is a three-piece ensemble consisting of a skirt, a blouse, and a dupatta (scarf). The skirt is typically heavily embellished with intricate embroidery, intricate sequin work, and beautiful beadwork. The blouse is also usually heavily embellished with the same attention to detail. The dupatta is typically made of soft, flowing material and is also adorned with embroidery or sequin work.

AThe color red has a significant meaning in Indian culture. It symbolizes love, passion, and fertility, making it the perfect color for weddings. The royal red lehenga is also a symbol of wealth and prosperity, as it is often made of expensive materials and features

intricate designs that require skilled craftsmanship.

One of the main reasons why the royal red lehenga is so popular is that it suits all skin tones. The rich red hue flatters both fair and darker skin tones, making it a versatile option for all brides. The lehenga can also be customized to suit different preferences and tastes. For example, some brides opt for a lighter shade of red or add touches of gold or silver for a more glamorous look.

The royal red lehenga has been worn by many famous Indian brides, including Aishwarya Rai, Deepika Padukone, and Priyanka Chopra. Their iconic wedding lehengas have inspired many brides-to-be to choose a similar style for their big day.

senior child specialist & Associate Professor at JK Lone Hospital

IThe writer is a resident doctor at JK Lone Hospital n this research work done in Rajasthan’s JK Lone Hospital, it was found that children who come with febrile convulsions have some relationship with iron deficiency anemia and iron deficiency in the body. This research work has also been published in the Indian Journal of Applied Research. Seizures in fever are such a problem that always worries the parents.

Febrile convulsions are a common condition that affects young children, typically between the ages of 6 months and 5 years. They occur when a child develops a fever, usually as a result of an infection, and the fever triggers a seizure. Febrile convulsions can be frightening for parents to witness but do not cause any long-term harm. The chance of future epilepsy is only 1 to 2%.

The problem occurs in 2-5% of children. At the age of six months to five years, seizures with fever are usually present, in this, when children have fever, then the child becomes unconscious along with jerks in the hands and feet. Most of them come at the age of 1-2 years.

Apart from hemoglobin in the body, iron is a major component of brain metabolism and many enzymes. That’s why iron deficiency increases the chances of seizures in children.

In the research work, two groups of 80-80 children were made and one group was of children having seizures with fever and the other group was of children with fever who did not have seizures. It was found that chil-

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 22

MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS

The most common symptoms of febrile convulsions include shaking or twitching, loss of consciousness, and sometimes, loss of bowel or bladder control. These symptoms usually last for just a few minutes and then subside on their own. Neither anti-seizure medication nor anti-fever medication is recommended to prevent further febrile seizures. Efforts to rapidly cool the child’s body during a seizure have not been extensively studied but are not recommended. The long-term outcome of children with febrile seizures is generally excellent with similar academic achievements to other children.

Febrile convulsions can be scary, but

CAPRICORN

DEC 23 - JAN 20

TYPES OF FEBRILE SEIZURES

There are two types of febrile seizures: Simple and Complex. Simple febrile seizures involve an otherwise healthy child with a single, one episode of a generalized seizure lasting less than 15 minutes. Complex febrile seizures have one or more of the following: focal symptoms such as jerking of only one side of the body, duration greater than 15 minutes, or two or more seizures within 24 hours. About 60–70% are classified as simple febrile seizures and 30–40% as complex.

sions. A febrile convulsion is not epilepsy and does not cause brain damage. Around 30% of babies and children who have had one febrile convulsion will have another. There is no way to predict who will be affected or when this will happen.

GENETIC

There is evidence that many children with febrile seizures have a genetic predisposition to have febrile seizures. If a child with a febrile seizure has an identical twin (monozygotic), the twin is much more likely to also have a febrile seizure than if the twin is non-identical (dizygotic). First-degree relatives (mother, father, sibling) of a child with febrile seizures have a risk of 10–15% of having a febrile seizure compared with the general risk in the population of only

If your child experiences a febrile convulsion, there are a few things you can do to help:

Stay calm. Although it can be scary to see your child having a seizure, remember that febrile convulsions are not usually serious and will pass on their own.

 Protect your child from injury. Move any objects that your child might bump into out of the way, and gently hold

your child to prevent them from falling.

 Monitor your child’s breathing. Make sure your child is breathing normally and that their airway is clear.

 Take your child’s temperature and give them medication if necessary. If your child’s fever is high, you can give them acetaminophen or ibuprofen to bring it down.

 Seek medical attention if necessary. In most cases, febrile convulsions do not require medical treatment. However, you should call your doctor if your child has a prolonged seizure (more than 5 minutes), if they have difficulty breathing, or if they have another seizure soon after the first one.

It is said that anemia due to iron is a common problem and we can easily get rid of the problem by supplementing iron and not only it removes anemia in children but also helps in preventing seizures. If this happens, we should give iron supplements to the children and keep checking their iron status from time to time

REASSURANCE FOR PARENTS ABOUT FEBRILE CONVULSIONS

 Children suffer no pain or discomfort during a fit.

 A febrile convulsion is not epilepsy. No regular drugs are needed. A short-lived fit will not cause brain damage. Even a long fit almost never causes harm. Children who have had a febrile convulsion grow up healthy.

If you have concerns or questions, contact your doctor. In an emergency, take your child to the nearest hospital emergency department.

There is a medication called Midazolam that is sometimes recommended for children who have a history of febrile convulsions lasting longer than 5 minutes. Most children do not require this medication. If you would like more information about this treatment, you should talk with your doctor.

Problem about finances will be resolved. Those on medication will find improvement in their condition. Smooth going is indicated for those on a long journey.

Stars on the property front appear the brightest. Taking the family on a trip seems impossible today due to your professional commitments.

Some clarification will need to be sought on a financial issue, before you take the next step. Efforts in the real estate market may bear fruit. A project left halfway by someone else may come on your shoulders, but your efforts will be acknowledged.
