Country needs sustainable devt, not shortcut politics: PM Uddhav camp hits out at ‘short-term politics’ remark

STAYING VIGILANT

Nagpur (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said India needed sustainable development and not “shortcut politics”.

He also alleged that some parties were trying to destroy the country’s economy.

Addressing a gathering after launching and inaugurating various projects worth Rs75,000 crore in Nagpur, Modi said “narrow approach towards development will provide only limited opportunities.”

He also said that in-

frastructure development in the country in the last eight years has been done with a human touch.

“A developed India can become a reality through united strength, progress and development of all states. When we have a narrow approach to-

wards development, opportunities are also limited,” he said.

“In the last eight years, we have changed the mindset and approach with ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas’ (everyone’s support, trust and efforts),” said the PM.

Modi urged people to remain cautious against politicians indulging in shortcut politics, looting taxpayers’ money and grabbing power through false promises. “Some political parties are trying to destroy the country’s economy and people should expose such politicians and parties. My appeal to all political leaders is to focus on sustainable development instead of shortcut politics. You can win elections with sustainable development,” he said.

Modi said the projects launched and inaugurated in Nagpur presented a holistic vision of development.

He urged people to remain cautious against politicians indulging in shortcut politics, looting taxpayers’ money and grabbing power through false promises.

“Country’s development cannot take place through shortcut poli-

tics,” he said.

“Some political parties are trying to destroy the country’s economy and people should expose such politicians and parties. My appeal to all political leaders is to focus on sustainable development instead of shortcut politics. You can win elections with sustainable development,” said the prime minister.

Mumbai: Former Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA Eknath Khadse has been thwarted by the ruling coalition of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena in his bastion of Jalgaon’s Muktainagar.

Khadse and his family have ruled the roost at the Jalgaon district Milk Union for the past several years. Recently, however, Khadse’s wife Manda Khadse was defeated by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Man-

gesh Chavan, the candidate of Kisan Panel.

There were 39 candidates in the fray for 20 seats. The seat in the Pachora constituency was unopposed. In the elections held on the remaining 19 seats, the BJP-Shinde faction has won.

Mumbai: Shiv Sena –Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray on Sunday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement on shortterm politics not helping the country.

The faction also questioned the manner in which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) formed a government in Maharashtra with the rebel faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

While addressing a gathering in Nagpur on Sunday, the PM said “country’s development cannot take place through shortcut politics” and that “some political parties are trying to destroy the economy and people should expose such politicians and parties.”

Terming the statement as “funny”, Shiv Sena (UBT) Spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi said. “Short-term politics is undermining the Constitution, the federal structure of the country, democracy and agencies to form an illegal and unconstitutional government.”

In a reference to the formation of Eknath Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis government in June, she said, “You (BJP) could have waited for five years for elections and then got your majority. But what you have done is a result of short-term gains, short-term politics and short-sightedness that damages constitutional morality.”

Mumbai: Firing a fresh salvo at Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, Shiv Sena - Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray chief Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday questioned how a person who insulted Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is seen sharing the stage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Referring to the inauguration of Samruddhi Expressway

by the PM at Nagpur, Thackeray targeted the governor over his recent controversial statement that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was an icon of “olden times”. “There has been disregard for Maharashtra. The man who insulted Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj sat next to Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, so what does Maharashtra take from that?” asked Thackeray in outrage.

Nagpur: At the inauguration of the Samriddhi Expressway in Nagpur on Sunday, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde targeted former CM Uddhav Thackeray over completion of the project. MACT member MM Walimohammed directed the two respondents the owner of the offending motorcycle and the insurer ICICI Lombard Gen. Insurance Co. Ltd to make the payment jointly and severally with an interest of 7% per annum from the date of filing of the claim.

The compensation amount includes Rs5.44 lakh towards medical bills and hospital bills and Rs10,000 for funeral expenses. A copy of the order passed on Novem-

ber 23 was made available on Saturday. Appearing for the claimant, advocate ST Kadam submitted before the tribunal that the victim Bipin Sheth (59), who was a businessman, was earning Rs 25,142 per month.

On December 29, 2016, the victim was riding his motorcycle towards Vashi in Navi Mumbai, when another twowheeler rammed into the vehicle. The victim died during treatment at a hospital and had incurred medical expenses to the tune of Rs7 lakh.

Mumbai: The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL), which has undertaken the MumbaiAhmedabad bullet train project, is yet to pay the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) land allotted for the construction of an underground station.

The MMRDA is the special planning authority for the BKC, and it had allotted 1.52 ha of land above the ground and 3.22 ha below the ground for the construction of the BKC bullet train sta-

tion. In lieu of this, the MMRDA was supposed to get Rs3,889 crore as a compensatory amount. Speaking to the media, a senior MMRDA official said that they have written to the NHSRCL for the payment. “The NHSRCL will take up the compensation payment subject in their board meeting and thereafter some process will be

seen. We are waiting for the same,” the official stated.

The Maharashtra government is also an equity holder in the high-speed bullet train project. Therefore, excluding Rs5,000 crore (the state government’s share), the MMRDA has demanded the remaining Rs3,889 crore as compensation.

According to the of-

MONKEY WHICH ATTACKED SEVERAL PERSONS CAPTURED

Navi Mumbai: Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar inspected the Morbe Dam project and directed officials to ensure a smooth water supply to villages that were affected due to it. At least seven villages were affected while setting up the dam project and now, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is responsible for supplying water to them. The officials were also instructed to restrict outsider movement without permission for safety reasons, prevent encroachment and focus on the natural beautification of the area.

Mumbai: A monkey which attacked at least 15 persons in the city’s north-eastern suburb of Mulund over the past several weeks has been captured, a forest department official said. The animal has been handed over to the forest department for rehabilitation. The task was given last week to a team from NGO Resqink Association of Wildlife Welfare (RAWW). “It was aggressive towards humans and was showing unusual behaviour. A fivemember team captured the monkey,” RAWW officials said.

Mumbai: As was the norm when the city was fighting COVID-19 pandemic, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to reinstate its order of cleaning public and community toilets five times a day. It begs the question whether it will be enough to overhaul the whole modus operandi when it comes to public toilets?

The civic body has issued instructions to the Solid Waste

Management Department and an implementation plan is being put together.

“The BMC has decided to keep the toilets clean and sanitize them five times a day,” said Iqbal Singh Chahal, BMC Commissioner.

Lack of cleanliness in public toilets creates serious health hazards, making them a nuisance to residents living nearby. Even though the BMC, Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), and

toilets, maintenance has remained neglected.

Additionally, the number of toilets per user is also not up to the mark. Currently, there is currently one public toilet seat per 752 males and 1,820 females. This ratio is not in compli-

ance with the prescribed numbers under the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), which are, one toilet for 100-400 males and 100-200 females respectively.

Based on the census

“We welcome the decision, if it is to be implemented. But, who will bear the cost of electricity, water and manpower? The corporation should discuss it with the operators first. The slum residents pay around `40 to `60 per family every month to operators and they will not be ready to pay more.”

slum population figures, currently, there is one community toilet seat per 42 males and 34 females, while the SBM prescribes one toilet for 35 males and 25 females respectively.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE SHAPING THE FUTURE OF HUMANITY

Artificial Intelligence (AI) leverages computers and machines to mimic the problemsolving and decision-making capabilities of the human mind. AI is shaping the future of humanity across nearly every industry. It is already the main driver of emerging technologies like big data, robotics and Internet of Things (IoT), and it will continue to act as a technological innovator for the foreseeable future. Several examples of artificial intelligence impact our lives today. These include FaceID on iPhones, the search algorithm on Google, and the recommendation algorithm on Netflix. You’ll also find other examples of how AI is in use today on social media, digital assistants like Alexa, and ride-hailing apps such as Uber. In 2022, artificial intelligence will have progressed far enough to become the most revolutionary technology ever created by man.

can connect with human thoughts and interpret them better but these are still work in improvement or progress. Self-aware AI (a thing of the future) will have an independent intelligence, and it will make its own decisions. These machines will be smarter than the human minds.

JOBS AI CAN REPLACE

Based on the nature and type of jobs replaceable by AI are customer service executives, chatbots, bookkeeping and data entry, receptionists, proofreading, manufacturing and pharmaceutical work, pharmaceutical labs, retail services, and courier services.

JOBS AI CAN’T REPLACE

Artificial Intelligence (AI) leverages computers and machines to mimic the problem-solving and decision-making capabilities of the human mind. AI is shaping the future of humanity across nearly every industry

As AI forays into every aspect of human life, it is time for intervention by responsible actions by policymakers as well as industry stakeholders to counter its possible misuse

Artificial intelligence or AI simulates human intellect to machines. AI-enabled machines are capable of performing some of the specific tasks better than humans and mimic human actions.

There are four types of AI: Reactive machines AI: This is the most superficial level of AI. Reactive machines can do basic operations. They cannot form memories or use past experiences to make decisions like the IBM’s Deep Blue. Limited memory AI can store existing data and create better output by using the data like Tesla’s self-driving cars. Theory of mind AI

Human creativity knows no limits and hence fields of strategic thinking, leadership, conflict resolution and negotiation, emotional intelligence, and empathy are qualities in jobs that AI cannot replace at any point in time. Following are some of the professions which would stand the test of time: Human resource managers, Writers, Lawyers (limited to Evidence processing), Chief executives, Scientists (limited to support analysis of data), Psychiatrists, Public relations managers, Software developers, and Project managers.

The final goal of AI is that a machine can have a type of general intelligence similar to a human’s is one of the most ambitious ever proposed by science. The design and application of AI that can only behave intelligently in a very specific setting is related to what is known as weak AI, as opposed to strong AI. Strong AI would imply that a properly designed computer does not simulate a mind but actually

It is not that the US is not in the know of such diversion of funds. Some of the US governments have turned off the tap in the past on that basis. Adding the word humanitarian will not change the conduct of aid recipients in spreading terror at any given opportunity. The reason why Pakistan was placed on the grey list of Financial Action Task Force (FATF) since 2018 was because of

“strategic counter-terrorist financing-related deficiencies”. It was removed from the global “terrorism” financing list only in October this year. One doesn’t know what guarantee Pakistan provided for the bailout.

The human brain is very far removed indeed from AI models, which suggests that so-called singularity-artificial super intelligences based on replicas of the brain that far surpass human intelligence-are a prediction with very little scientific merit. In fact, we can affirm that current AI systems are examples of what Daniel Dennet called “competence without comprehension”

TRULY INTELLIGENT AI

Among future activities, we believe that the most important research areas will be hybrid systems that combine the advantages of systems capable of reasoning on the basis of knowledge and memory use with those of AI based on the analysis of massive amounts of data, that is, deep learning. But they are more like black boxes with no capacity to explain and suffer from limitations of “catastrophic forgetting.” No matter how intelligent future artificial intelligences become, they can’t follow the same socialization and cul-

The new or latest developments in AI are the creation of new chips that help run deep neural networks faster. These chips can be used to train models to recognize images, speech and text more efficiently. Apart from this introduction of new AI concepts such as reinforcement learning, generative adversarial networks, and program synthesis. New algorithms allow for a greater level of control in operating rooms and medical centres around the globe. Similarly, self-driving vehicles and city infrastructure will benefit immensely from advanced AI algorithms and machine learning frameworks.

AI is now able to understand human emotions to some extent and has the capability to predict human behaviour. For example, some forms of AI can now tell if someone is lying or not. AI can now also be used for social good and in the future maybe even save lives and prevent crimes. Second, they allow us to predict what will happen in the future by using AI to create forecasting models that can tell us about future events or changes in trends. And finally, they help us understand how people behave and react so that we can improve our own behaviour and reactions as well as develop better customer service based on what people want and need. As AI forays into every aspect of human life, it is time for intervention by responsible actions by policymakers as well as industry stakeholders to counter its possible misuse.

Criminalisation of the consensual sex among minors under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act is an issue which the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud wants Parliament to look at. Under the Criminal Law Amendment Act of 2013 the legal age for consensual sex is 18 years. The POCSO Act criminalises all sexual acts among minors even if it is consensual. This, the CJI said in his keynote address at the National Stakeholders Consultation on Child Protection, said, “…in my time as judge, I have observed that this category of cases poses difficult questions for judges across the spectrum. There is growing concern surrounding this issue, which must be considered by the Legislature in light of reliable research by experts in adolescent healthcare”.

The CJI’s opinion becomes important in the light of condoms, alcohol being found in class 10 students’ bags in Bengaluru. Obviously, children are indulging in consensual sex at a minor age and society has to accept this fact.

WITH SUKHU’S ELEVATION, CONG TRIES TO CULL NEPOTISM CHARGE

New Delhi (Agencies):

With Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu taking oath as the Chief Minister in Himachal Pradesh, the Congress has tried to emerge out of the shadows of Virbhadra Singh’s family that had been at the forefront in the party’s state politics for decades.

Sukhu’s swearing-in ceremony was attended by senior Congress leaders including party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

The elevation of Sukhu is seen as the party’s efforts to cull nepotism and the charge of promoting families.

The newly sworn-in Himachal chief minister comes from a very humble beginning and has risen from the ranks. That is why the party chose Sukhu in place of Pratibha Singh, who is from the royal family and wife of Late Virbhadra Singh, said sources.

Vacancies in HCs: Parl panel expresses its displeasure

New Delhi (PTI): Amid a standoff between the govt and the Supreme Court Collegium over the appointment of judges, a parliamentary panel has asked the Executive and the Judiciary to come up with “out of box thinking” to deal with the “perennial problem” of vacancies in high courts.

The department-related standing committee on Law and Personnel in its report tabled in Parliament on Thursday said it is not in agreement with the comments of the Department of Justice in the Union Law Ministry that “time for filling up of vacancies of judges in the higher judiciary cannot be indicated”.

The timeline has been drawn in the Second Judges Case and also in

the Memorandum of Procedure (MOP) regarding the appointment of judges, it pointed out.

“But regrettably, those timelines are not adhere to by both, the Judiciary and the Executive, which is leading to delay in filling up of the vacancies,” it lamented.

It said as per the data provided by the govern-

Dr Singh attends ‘Divyang Parivar Maha-Samelan’ at Kathua district in J&K

Kathua: Union Minister of State Dr Jitendra Singh said on Sunday that PM Narendra Modi led govt is dedicated to those who were left out of mainstream by the previous governments.

The Union Minister said this during ‘Divyang Parivar Maha-

9,000 football-crazy Kolkatans in Qatar to watch final

lll

Kolkata (PTI): The euphoria surrounding this year’s FIFA World Cup has been “unprecedented” in footballmad Kolkata, with nearly 9,000 fans having already travelled to Qatar to witness the showpiece event and many more slated to arrive in the next few days, officials said.

The people are still making queries regarding ticket and accommodation availability and travel pack -

ages for Qatar, days ahead of the semi-finals and the final next week, they said.

“Around 10,00012,000 football fans have travelled to Qatar from eastern India so far, including close to 9,000 people from Kolkata. People are still very keen to make it to the semis and the final, and we expect at least another 1,500 Kolkatans to visit the Arab country,” Anil Punjabi, eastern region head

of Travel Agents’ Federation of India (TAFI), told PTI.

Though the craze for the business end of the world cup has died

down to an extent following the exit of giants such as Brazil and Portugal, Argentina’s advance to the semi-finals is reason enough for many of Kolkata’s football enthusiasts to pack their bags for Qatar.

Rampur bypoll: Mayawati smells BJP-SP collusion

Lucknow (PTI): Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Sunday attributed the defeat of the Samajwadi Party in the recent Rampur bypoll to “planned low voting”, wondering whether there was a collusion between the SP and the BJP. The BJP for the first time won from SP leader Azam Khan’s bastion Rampur, which he represented before he was disqualified after his conviction in a hate speech case.

‘India’s aviation market has ample opportunities’

First India Bureau

New Delhi: The Indian civil aviation market has exciting and significant opportunities but taxation has always been an issue which also makes the industry less competitive, according to IATA chief Willie Walsh.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is a global grouping that represents around 300 airlines, including those from India. India is seeing a “much stronger recovery” than the Asia Pacific region in general but there could be challenges in terms of getting new aircraft and spare parts.

“The market in India... The opportunity in India has to be considered to be very very significant. There are issues in India not unique to aviation but the regulatory regime and bureaucracy can hinder the pace (of growth),” Walsh said.

As per official figures, the maximum all-India power demand met at 2:51 pm on April 26, 2022 was 201.066 GW.

Mumbai: According to police officials, some vehicles procured by the Mumbai police earlier this year under the Nirbhaya Fund are currently being used to provide Y-plus security to MLAs and MPs of the Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Thackeray also accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of failing to resolve the matter as the war of words over the status of the disputed inter-state border in Belagavi continues between Maharashtra and Karnataka.

“Our vehicles (with Maharashtra registration) were vandalized at the Maharashtra-Karnataka border areas and people are being attacked, while the governments in both the states and the Centre have kept mum over the issue,” alleged Thackeray.

He further said that the BJP is in power in both Karnataka and Maharashtra as well as in the Centre, but it does not care to interfere and resolve the dispute.

“From farmers and women to industries, everyone is bound to face a range of issues and problems because of this border dispute. There is no action taken by the Centre so far,” he complained.

After the KarnatakaMaharashtra border dispute escalated, many untoward incidents took place in Belagavi, after which as a precautionary measure, police presence was tightened along the border, in Belagavi’s Chikkodi.

The development prompted the opposition Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to attack the Shinde-led government, as they asked if the security of the ruling legislators was more important than protecting women.

The Nirbhaya Fund has been granted to the state governments by the Centre since 2013 to implement schemes related to women’s safety.

Kids getting addicted to gadgets, facing emotional, physical issues

New Delhi: We already knew that many children and teenagers are spending a lot of time on social media, video games, and other activities on screens. Now a recent survey has revealed that kids aged between 9 to 13 years are spending over three hours a day on the internet, using social media watching videos or playing games, according to 42 per cent of urban parents who took part in the survey in Maharashtra.

The survey by LocalCircles, a community

social media platform, also said that 46 per cent of the children are using smartphones, thanks to easy access to devices with school activities going online.

Almost every parent stressed on how many hours their kids log on

their tablet, smartphone, or TV each day.

“During the pandemic, the majority of kids were mostly confined to their homes and the only pass time they had was online classes because the schools were all shut, and their best bet was

smartphones, tablets or laptops to watch videos, play online games and chat with peers. Studies have revealed an obsession with screen time increased more because of the pandemic,” said Sachin Taparia, founder of Local Circles.

Taparia said government, parents and schools need to work together to enable kids in such a way that they use the internet and gadgets constructively to get educated, learn from the best, collaborate and set themselves on the path of success in whatever career they pick.

Screen time affects brain development. Each time a child has an experience, nerve impulses are fired in the brain. With repeated experiences, these neural pathways are fired over and over again. The more frequently neural connections are used (impulses are fired), the stronger they become.

OUR HAPPINESS: HEALTHY SOUL IN A HEALTHY BODY!

The rational and philosophical views of religions prescribe. certain directions for keeping the soul fit and healthy. That is why there is a popular saying “A sound mind in a sound body! This denotes that a wise man always cares for the body as well as the soul to keep them happy and healthy. The standard directions in both cases are not contradictory but complementary to each other.”

We start our discussion by quoting the great Ancient Philosopher PLATO“If the head and the body are to be well, you must begin by curing the soul.” On the other hand, Lord Ma haveera stressed the same by saying - “The body is the boat and the soul is the sailor and the worldly ex istence is the Ocean.”

We as ordinary human beings care for the health of our bodies alone. But as a man, we are not bodies alone. We have embodied souls. This stresses that the health of the soul is no less important than that of the body. From one anoth er angle - we see that on a man’s death the embodied soul leaves the body and the body is disposed of or consigned to fire or to earth as per the practice of that community.

The general belief is that the soul travels to an other body giving birth to someone. This soul goes with good & bad deeds as the case may be. The Jain philosophy believes that the soul passes into anoth er body as per its noble or wrong deeds called Pap and Punya.

Here we may stress upon the health of the Soul which is eternal by nature and never dies be more im portant than that of the health of the body which is ultimately perishable after death. Present days medi cal science prescribes a number of directions for the health and betterment of our body and is more or less silent regarding the health of the soul. The
