Mumbai (PTI) : Tennis player Leander Paes’s former live-in partner Rhea Pillai on Thursday opposed his plea for “condonation of delay” in filing an appeal against a magistrate’s court’s order in the domestic violence case. In February this year, the Bandra metropolitan magistrate’s court held that Paes, an Olympics bronze medal winner, had committed various acts of domestic violence against Pillai.

It also directed him to pay monthly maintenance amount of Rs1 lakh to Pillai, the mother of his daughter, along with monthly rent of Rs50,000 on the condition that she left his flat on Carter Road.

The former tennis player moved the sessions court in November seeking quashing of the magistrate’s order. He also prayed for condonation of delay in filing appeal as the magistrate’s court had passed the order on February 11, 2022. In her reply filed through advocate Sana Usman, Pil-

lai said the condonation of delay plea was “devoid of any substantial and genuine grounds”. The statutory period for filing appeal is 30 days under section 29 of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, the reply said.

Paes had been travelling with his current girlfriend Kim Sharma to various holiday destinations and social events during the seven months when he failed to move the court, it alleged. It also claimed that Paes’s claim that he was busy taking care of his father was false. The sessions court will hear the matter further on January 12, 2023.

Railways’ BMC water bill crosses ` 500-crore mark, services still on

First India Bureau

Mumbai: The Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR) owe the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) over Rs568 crore in the form of unpaid water bills spanning decades. The information was revealed in a response to an RTI query.

As per the corpora-

tion records, as of November 01 this year, the Central Railway has Rs2,59,93,79,418 dues while the Western Railway has Rs3,08,85,65,247 unpaid bills.

The railway officials, however, said that they are making regular payments and that old arrears have snowballed into the huge amount.

There is a BMC rule that allows the civic

body to disconnect water connections if the bill amount is not paid within the due date. However, the list shows that some bills are pending since 2002. This raises the question as to why BMC did not disconnect supply and take legal action to recover the outstanding amount.

Civic officials said they had disconnected

Thane: The state AntiCorruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested a man, who allegedly posed as a Land Department staffer and tried to dupe a plot seller in Raigad district. The 45-year-old accused got in touch with a man who sold his land in Dhotregaon, pretending to be a “land record officer” and wanted the plot to be measured.

“The accused demanded Rs3 lakh to measure the land and issue a certificate.

He was held on Wednesday while accepting Rs1 lakh,” said an official.

House divided among two states, 4 rooms in Maha, 4 rooms in Telangana; taxes paid to both

Chandrapur: This may sound strange but it is true. The Pawar family whose house happens to stand along the border of Maharashtra and Telangana in the village of Maharajaguda in Simavarti Jivati tehsil of Chandrapur district, has been paying property tax to both states for years. Reason: Four rooms in the house come inside Telangana while four rooms in Maharashtra.

Pawar enjoys the beneficiary schemes of both

states and even own vehicles with registration numbers of Maharashtra and Telangana.

While the kitchen is in Telangana, the bedroom and hall are in Maharashtra. A total of 13 members of families of two brothers Uttam Pawar and Chandu Pawar have been living in this 10-room house for years.

In 1969, when the dispute on the border issue was finally fixed, the Pawar family’s land was divided into two states. The house was also divided. However, no problem has

been faced to date by the family as they pay property taxes in both states.

Speaking on the matter, Uttam Pawar said, “Our house is divided between Maharashtra and Telangana, but till today we have not had any problem with it, we pay property tax in both the states and take advantage of the schemes of both the states.”

Both states have laid their claims on 14 villages along the Maharashtra-Telangana border. Even though the Supreme Court has ruled

Among them, one of the 14 villages is Maharajaguda village, which is divided between the two states.

MAN HELD FOR SEXUALLY EXPLOITING GIRL

Mumbai: Mankhurd police have arrested a man for alleged sexual assault, forced unnatural intercourse and mental torture of a 22-yearold girl since 2018. The accused Abdul Hamid Khan (31) befriended the victim on social media in 2018 and promised to marry, after which he repeatedly raped her and also forced her into having unnatural intercourse with him. The victim got pregnant in 2019 and was forced into an abortion, police said.

Khan has been charged with rape, forcible unnatural intercourse, cheating, causing hurt by means of poison, assault and other relevant sections, said a senior cop.

BMC CHANGES NAME OF BYCULLA ZOO, ADDS WORD ‘BOTANICAL’ TO IT

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has changed the name of ‘Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan and Zoo’ located at Byculla in the city by adding the word ‘vanaspati’ or ‘botanical’ to it. Municipal Commissioner and administrator Iqbal Singh Chahal on December 12 passed a resolution to change the name of the 160-year-old zoo to ‘Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Vanaspati Udyan va Pranisangrahalaya’. The word ‘vanaspati’, which means botanical, has been inserted before ‘udyan’ or garden in the earlier name. The garden, which is spread over 5,200 sq m, houses more than 6,611 trees of over 291 species that comprises 80% of the city’s flora.

Patole slams Centre for rise in drug addicts, smuggling

First India Bureau

Mumbai: Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Nana Patole on Thursday criticized the Central government for the increase in number of drug addicts among youths across the country. He also blamed it for higher frequency of drug smuggling.

Talking to media, Patole said, “India is seen as a ‘young’ nation, with around 50% of the population falling in the age group of 16 to 40

years. This generation, which is considered the future of country, is becoming drug addicts.”

An affidavit submitted by the Central government to the Supreme Court states that 1.5 crore children in the age group of 10 to 17

years are addicted to drugs. This clearly shows how serious the situation is and it has worsened due to massive increase in smuggling since the Bharatiya Janata Party government came to power in the Centre, he asserted.

Talking about drug smuggling crackdowns, the Congress leader said, “The younger generation getting addicted to drugs is not good for the future of our country. Drug trafficking has increased significantly in the last few years.”

Navi Mumbai: In order to create awareness among motorists to use seatbelts while driving or co-driver in the front seats of a four-wheeler, the Panvel traffic unit of Navi Mumbai police offered flowers to those motorists who did not wear seatbelts. “While traveling in a four-wheeler, it is mandatory for the driver and the passenger on the front seat to wear seat belts. There is also a traffic rule in this regard. Both the traffic police as well as RTO can take penal action against drivers who do not wear seatbelts,” an official from the traffic unit said. Despite the traffic department collecting huge fines from violators, some drivers do not follow this rule. “Seatbelt is very helpful and beneficial from a safety point of view. If the seat belt is not worn, airbags do not work in the event of an accident in many vehicles. They come out only if the belt is being used,” said the official. tional disputes. PM Modi is on record to say-“This is not an Era of war.”

China being member of UNSC will take the lead to declare India as an aggressor. Large no of economic and diplomatic sanctions will be slapped on India. Presently, India is a fragile economy with large portion of war equipment and oil being exported. After Ukraine war and prolonged sanctions, Russia will be too weak to support India and veto such resolutions, against the wishes of China. Therefore, India will be throttled to stop war, by the West and China.

CHAOS IN PAKISTAN

REVIEWING DELHI AIRPORT INFRA TO END WOES OF PASSENGERS

India is progressing well as the fastest growing economy in the world and today we are a power to reckon. Any misadventure will derail the economic progress and take the country back by more than a decade or so. War is a costly hobby and the price of war in terms of economy & human lives will have to be clearly weighed by decision makers

India celebrates VIJAY DIWAS on 16 Dec to commemorate 51 years of Victory in Bangladesh. Last month, Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh was on a day’s visit to the India-China border in Eastern Ladakh. This was his second visit during a span of a few weeks. He made a specific mention of the part of the State of Jammu and Kashmir under Pakistan’s illegal occupation and said that India will take back POK in accordance with a resolution passed unanimously in Parliament in 1994. Is India preparing for Bangladesh War Season 2? Let’s have a reality check.

POLITICAL WILL

India had gone to UN in 1948 with the Kashmir issue and thereafter in various forums, India has always reiterated that sanctity of ‘Line of Control (LC)’ should be maintained. Pakistan leaves no opportunity to keep the Kashmir issue alive in international forum. LC is now accepted as ipso facto border between India and Pakistan. Even during Kargil war the sanctity of LC was honoured

THE DISSIPATION OF GALWAN ANGER

by India. India had 4 golden chances that Pakistan presented in the form of four wars they lost, but we didn’t do it that time. However, the Hon’ble Raksha Mantri’s statement on POK manifests the changed political will of New Bharat.

India is progressing well as the fastest growing economy in the world and today we are a power to reckon. Any misadventure will derail the economic progress and take the country back by more than a decade or so. War is a costly hobby and the price of war in terms of economy and human lives will have to be clearly weighed by the decision makers, before we undertake such bold action.

MILITARY CAPABILITY

India Armed Forces are among the world’s largest defence forces with experience of four wars. However, to undertake an offensive of the magnitude of taking POK back will need a detailed thought. The following aspects merit considerationl India and Pakistan have formidable defence system along the ‘Line of Control (LC)’ in J&K. The pace of operations will therefore be slow in such obstacle ridden rugged terrain.

l Any initiative of India in the context could result in a two front war with China and Pakistan.

l China has heavily invested

How quickly economic interests take over national sentiments is best illustrated by India’s relations with China. In a burst of justifiable anger after the violent clashes in Galwan in 2020, there were calls to boycott Chinese goods. The boycott call, strongly backed by the Confederation of All-India Traders (CAIT), especially targeted decorative lights, idols of Lord Ganesh and goddess Lakshmi and firecrackers which register brisk sale during Diwali. The CAIT expected a business loss of about 75, 000 crore to China. The response was significant as Chinese goods disappeared during that year’s festive season.

The patriotic fervour of

in POK and won’t let it slip out. It will provide all help to Pakistan thereby keeping India embroiled in the conflict without any tangible gains.

l Even if China doesn’t open up the Eastern Borders of India actively take part with Pakistan, China will certainly deploy it’s forces on LAC with India and tie down a large amount of Indian forces, in the Eastern theatre of war.

l India has three strike corps, as offensive forces. One is poised for China Sector, the second for deserts of Western Sector and only one strike corps is left for offensive in J&k. Therefore, taking entire POK with one strike corps may not be feasible and committing more troops in POK will unbalance the entire western front.

l Support of local population is essential for such operations but it’s not likely in the case in POK.

INTERNATIONAL OPINION

India’s stand of principled neutrality during Russia’s aggression in Ukraine has also not been taken kindly by the west and the USA. The socalled free world has framed a negative impression of India. India has also made it clear in the Ukraine conflict that it does not favour war as a means to resolve interna-

Pakistan is in utter chaos today due to economic crisis and political turmoil. Nature has also not been kind and ravaging floods have also added to its woos. Hardliners and extremist organizations are calling the shots over weakened Govt and non assertive Pak Army. Pakistan society today is almost on the brink of a civil war. Further rise in tempers will lead to more violence and civil unrest.

The POK region has also been linguistically and culturally marginalized by Pakistan rulers, for nearly 75 years. People of POK are being deprived of all basic rights by Pakistan and it remains an underdeveloped territory. China is making inroads into this territory to fulfill its ambitions. POK is presently at the crossroads of Conflicting Interests of India, China and Pakistan.

CONCLUSION

Crystal gazing into future indicates that there is considerable anti-China feeling spreading in Pakistan. USA is already alienated with Pak. India is making new friends in the Arab world and Pakistan has been snubbed many a times. It is possible that Pakistan may be isolated from its closest allies - USA, China and the Arab world. In the time-frame that this change comes about, India would be militarily powerful to take back POK by force, economically strong to withstand sanctions that will accrue and politically strong to justify the actions in the international forum. Once that is done, taking POK will be a cakewalk. It’s a ‘feel good’ factor whose time has not yet come but we can keep the pot boiling.

Stronger national sentiments are needed for the decoupling with China by replacing Chinese products with those made in India. Cost is one factor which makes Indian products uncompetitive in comparison to those from China

2020 didn’t last long. Chinese fancy lights were back to swarm Indian markets. Despite the after-effects of pandemic and inflation, demand was at its peak. China is understood to have exported $710 million worth of LED light related products, about

135% more than the corresponding period in 2020. Stronger national sentiments are needed for decoupling with China by replacing Chinese products with those made in India. Cost is one factor which makes Indian products uncompetitive in comparison to those from China. Besides import of fancy lights, China remains India’s 2nd biggest trading partner after US. While India exported $21.25 billion worth of goods to China in 2021-22, imports stood at $94.57 billion. These figures may wrongly be interpreted to suggest that China’s designs on India’s territorial integrity are being ignored. With Indian economy now on a brisk march, it will take some time to reduce the country’s dependence on Chinese products.

The frustration of being confined to their homes because of the travel restrictions due to the pandemic is being let out now with people rushing to catch the first flight to execute their travel plans. Lack of infrastructure is another reason for the overcrowding. So heavy is the footfall that Delhi international airport’s Terminal 3 has been witnessing chaotic scenes for the last few day. The seemingly unending breakdown of arrangements at the airport forced the Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia to personally visit the airport to find out what the bottlenecks were. Other major airports also are witnessing scenes which some flyers compared with a ‘fish market’.

After the minister’s visit a slew of measures were announced. It was found that more counters of different airlines were needed and the process of security check at the entry point and baggage clearance needed to be expedited in view of long queues of travellers. The plans have not worked so far.

The Kanyakumari to Kashmir foot march has also courted many controversies in the last three months and led to several fiery exchanges between the Congress and the BJP including on Rahul Gandhi’s evergrowing grey beard and his Burberry T-shirt.

With over 2,800 km under his belt, Gandhi has managed to catch the attention of his supporters as well as detractors and seen quite a few celebrities including from the tinsel town and academia walking alongside him from time to time. However, some political pundits feel the party should have had more tangible political objectives for the yatra and questioned the party for skipping poll-bound states of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.

You might not be an Ivy Leaguer, but because we’re all now enrolled at Harvard and the year is 1865, you best have your horse and carriage ready. Even though it had a quite different appearance at the time, the varsity jacket was initially created on the Harvard campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The original varsity was a thick knit sweater that athletes wore as a uniform rather than a jacket. The “letterman jacket” was first made when the Harvard Baseball team made the decision to sew enormous “H”s into the middle of their jerseys.

The letter came with some restrictions, too. If you were a good enough player, you could retain your jersey and the letter, but if you sat on the bench the entire season and

DRESS LIKE A BOSS

didn’t play, you had to give your jersey back at the end of the year, which added to the letters’ competitive appeal. After a decade, Harvard’s football team started wearing lettered jerseys, and gradually but surely, other colleges and teams all around the country began donning their own variations of the varsity sweater.

Of course, each team handled things somewhat differently, altering the letter’s size or type, moving it around, and eventually gradually modifying the style until, by the early 20th century, the letter had

found its final location on the side of the sweater.

Athletes started looking for something a little more substantial as the fashion gained popularity, and in the 1930s the varsity jacket was produced. The varsity jacket, which had a wool body and contrasting leather sleeves as well as, of course, a large and proud letter on the side, came to represent authority at one’s particular institution. According to the custom, a player would need to first demonstrate his skill on the field before being granted a letter. The athlete would then pur-

chase a varsity jacket to attach on so that everyone could see how tal ented he was. The fact that designers may tinker with fabrics and col ours to make a jacket for just about everyone shows that the varsity has always offered a lot of customis ing options. The varsity is gradually evolving into the typical man’s autumn wardrobe staple, from Gant Rugger’s neo-classic, vivid red Homerun Jacket to Comme Des Garcons’ darker version for the more avant-garde set.

Nadia Hashimi was born and raised in New York and New Jersey. Both her parents were born in Afghanistan and left in the early 1970s before the Soviet invasion.

Her mother went to Europe to obtain a master’s degree and her father to the US. He worked hard to fulfil his American dream and build a new, brighter life for his family. In 2002 they made their first trip to Afghanistan. It was a bitter-sweet experience for everyone, as the family found relics of childhood homes and reunited with loved ones. It culminated in Nadia writing her debut novel ‘The Pearl That Broke its Shell’- published in 2014. Her upbringing, experiences and interests came together in the form of stories based in the country of her parents and grandparents.

“Nadia Hashimi has written a tender and beautiful family story. Her always engaging multi-generational tale is a portrait of Afghanistan in all of its perplexing, enigmatic glory”Khaled Hossain.

‘”The Pearl that Broke its Shell’ is a story I simply had to tell. I am an AfghanAmerican woman and in my lifetime my reaction to my identity has changed drastically. Women lost so much in the violent years that followed my parents’ emigration. Our culture has been robbed. Decades of war and fundamentalist regimes left Afghan women battered and scarred, their rights buried under piles of rubble. Life as a girl is very different from life as a boy. The country is fraught with problems - child marriages, warlords, political unrest, drug addiction, corruption and much more. I wrote this story to share the experience of Afghan women

in a fiction work that is made up of a thousand truths”- writes Nadia Hashimi.

‘The Pearl...’ is a searing tale of powerlessness, fate and the freedom to control one’s own destiny. An Afghan woman is like a pearl imprisoned in the darkness of an oyster. Here we have two women, separated by a century, sharing a common dream of breaking their shells. Both are compelling, enduring hardshipsyet kindling hope! “The human spirit- a spirit that is harder than a rock and more delicate than a flower petal”. In 2007, in Taliban-ruled Kabul, Rahima- with four sisters and no brother- can only sporadically attend school. As they grow older, stepping out of the house becomes a nightmarish ordeal. Their mother struggles to support the family, as their father becomes increasingly addicted to drugs and highhandedness. Hope comes in the form of their auntKhala Shaima- sug-

gesting the ancient custom of ‘bachaposh’- which allows young Rahima to dress and be treated as a son until she is of marriageable age. As a boy, she has the kind of freedom that was previously unimaginablea freedom that will transform her forever.

Their aunt narrates the story of her greatgreat-grandmotherShakiba. Kabul 1900Shakiba, the daughter of a rural farming family, is disfigured in an accident as a child.

When her whole family perishes in a cholera epidemic, she has no one left to support her. She is treated like a slave by her relatives, who take possession of her land. She’s sold to various bidders- until she’s able to escape her life of drudgery by dressing as a man.

Through a rare stroke of luck, she becomes one of the guards of the King’s harem, in a lavish palace, in the bustling capital city of Kabul. She eventually makes a life for herself. Rahima and her sisters, Parwin and

Shahla, are forcibly married off to aged warlords with various wives, by their greedy father in lieu of money & drugs. Two of the sisters, living on either side of a common wall, never get to see each other. Each agonizes in their tortured lives. Parwin, the delicate, artistic girl- sets herself free through self-immolation. Their mother, unable to bear the pain, takes to drugs herself and the house condition deteriorates even further.

Although ‘The Pearl...’ is fiction, the struggle of womenfighting for their individuality- is very much a reality in the misogy-

nistic culture of Afghanistan. They’ve been subjected to slavish humiliation, bullying, physical and moral violence, forced marriage, sexual abuse polygamy, stoning to death and a lot more. The deplorable plight of Afghan women in a brutally patriarchal society will leave anyone aghast. This book is heartbreaking. Fortunately, it ends on a positive note- leaving the reader with a whisper of hope... “...the daughters of Afghanistan, may the sun warm your faces as you forge your path”. It is, indeed, a tender and beautiful family story.

You care about you lover but somehow hesitate in expressing that care. Don’t make friends for money and status rather make friends who will stick with you forever. On social front, you may have to spend some extra money in buying gifts for someone for some specific occasion.

‘Besharam Rang is a confluence of genres : Vishal-Sheykhar

Ace music composers VishalSheykhar have a penchant to deliver humongous chartbusters and this time they have delivered the party anthem of the year, Besharam Rang, for YRF’s Pathaan which has broken the internet!

Speaking about the instant success of the song featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, who look a million bucks together, Vishal Dadlani says, “Besharam Rang is a unique song. It is a confluence of genres that makes it very exciting musically. It is almost an old-school melody

paired with a modern beat, that is influenced by Afrobeat but is electronic. What I love most is how a true melody transcends language, because while Shilpa is singing it sounds like a very traditional Indian melody and Caralisa and I are singing a Spanish version of that melody and it sounds authentic there too.”

He adds, “It’s an ex citing crossover, we had a lot of fun making

it. I think Siddharth wanted to raise the bar in terms of the woman, the protagonist singing the song being very sensual and very empowered. It’s sexy and fun, and it’s a great groove that people are really going to enjoy dancing to it. A lot of heart has gone into it and I hope everyone enjoys it.”

Kangana Ranaut launches Manikarnika films

worked in films like War, Bang Bang, Salaam Namaste and composed hits like Khuda Jaane, Ghungroo and Hairat.

and understanding. It is one of those rare working relationships that is driven by a huge amount of passion, love for music and an ability to instantly grasp what we are collectively trying to achieve musically. The reason for the success of our combination lies in the joy of the process of making music and this joy is palpable when the audience hears the song.”
