Jaipur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday said that the state has a great potential to become a ‘World leader’ in the renewable energy sector.

While speaking at the flagging off ceremony of ‘Akshay Urja Daud’ and a cycle rally, which were organised to mark the 75th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi, Gehlot said his government was making all the efforts to promote renewable energy sector.

“Rajasthan has a great potential in renewable energy. The state can become a world leader in this sector,” he said.

The CM also administered a pledge to the participants to use renewable energy, saying this also helps in protecting the environment.

Two-day long celebrations to mark the 75th birth anniversary of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, under the close supervision of Ashok Gehlot at Birla Auditorium, ended on Tuesday evening.

A hardcore Gandhi family loyalist, Gehlot’s Rajasthan happens to be the only state among all other Congressruled states to celebrate Rajiv’s birth anniversary at this large scale and that too in a well-organised manner and others participated in the run, which was flagged off from the Ram Niwas Garden.

CM Gehlot while implementing the promise made in the manifesto, during his budget speech had made announcement of including 104 types of medicines of cancer, heart disease in the free medicine scheme.

He mentioned that during the previous government tenure, 608 free medicines were being distributed under CM Free Medicine Scheme and now 712 medicines are being given under this scheme which is in itself is a record.

Dr Singh said that this scheme shows the sensitivity and dedication of CM Ashok Gehlot towards the poor.

Notably, this scheme was inaugurated by CM Gehlot during his previous tenure on October 2, 2011 and due to the focus of CM on this scheme, the state has once again achieved top position in its implementation.

Jaipur: The Rajasthan High Court has issued notices to nine officials including Principal secretary, MD RAJCOMP, DG Anti-Corruption Bureau in an alleged scam of over three hundred crore rupees in the Department of Information Technology and Communication. The division bench of CJ S Ravindra Bhat and Justice Indrajeet Singh gave the order on the PIL filed by Poonamchand Bhandari.

It was said in the application crores of rupees were charged in the name of appointing computer experts by a private firm whereas the appointments were fake. Moreover, laptops that are usually bought for thirty to thirty five thousand rupees were purchased at three

times the rate. In addition to this, the fake employees were paid from ninety six thousand to three lakh fifty eight thousand rupees per month as salary, however no record of the same was also kept.

The employees have even realised amount between three to five lakh rupees per day of staying in hotels. Considering the matter as serious, the High Court issued notices.

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court extended the protection from arrest to West Bengal CID Additional Director General Rajeev Kumar in connection with the Saradha chit-fund scam.

Justice Madhumati Mitra extended Rajeev Kumar’s interim protection till August 28 after a CBI counsel submitted before her that his senior was out of town in connection with another case.

The junior counsel for the CBI prayed for an adjournment of hearing of Rajeev Kumar’s petition seeking quashing of a notice served on him by the agency to appear for questioning in connection with the Rs. 2,500-crore scam.

Mumbai: A Mumbai court sentenced gangster Rajendra Nikhalje alias Chhota Rajan and five others to eight years imprisonment for attempting to murder hotelier BR Shetty in 2012. Special Judge A T Wankhede also imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh each on the six men, who were earlier convicted in the case. They were facing charges under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act, besides section 307 (attempt to murder), 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Arms Act. Shetty was shot at in Andheri in October 2012 by two motorcycle-borne men, who fired four rounds and fled the spot. In Jan 2014, Police had filed a 1,332page charge sheet in the case. —ANI

W

ith Donald Trump due to visit Europe again for the G7 summit later this month, European leaders have run out of options for dealing with the US president. They have tried to charm him, persuade him, ignore him, or agree to disagree with him. Yet Trump’s malevolence is bottomless. The only alternative, therefore, is to oppose him.

The most immediate issue is European trade with Iran. This is no small matter. It is a battle that Europe cannot afford to lose.

Trump is capable of inflicting great harm without compunction, and is now doing so by economic means and threats of military action. He has invoked emergency economic and financial powers that aim to push Iran and Venezuela to economic collapse. He is trying to slow or stop China’s growth by closing US markets to Chinese exports, restricting the sale of US technologies to Chinese companies, and declaring China a currency manipulator.

It is important to call these actions what they are: the personal decisions of an incontinent individual, not the result of legislative action or the outcome of any semblance of public deliberation. Remarkably, 230 years after its constitution was adopted, the United States suffers from one-man rule. Trump has rid his administration of anyone of independent stature, such as the former defense secretary, retired General James Mattis, and few congressional Republicans murmur a word against their leader.

Trump is widely mischaracterized as a cynical politician maneuvering for personal power and financial gain. Yet the situation is far more dangerous. Trump is mentally disordered: megalomaniacal, paranoid, and psychopathic. This is not name-calling. Trump’s mental condition leaves him unable to keep his word, control his animosities, and restrain his actions. He must be opposed, not appeased.

Even when Trump does back down, his hatreds seethe. When face to face with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in June, Trump declared a truce in his “trade war” with China. Yet a few weeks later, he announced new tariffs. Trump was incapable of following through on his own word, despite the objections of his own advisers.

Most recently, a plunge in global markets has forced him to retreat temporarily. But his aggression toward China will continue; and his intemperate actions vis-à-vis that country will increasingly threaten Europe’s economy and security. Trump is actively trying to break any country that refuses to bow to his demands.

n March 30, 1867, U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward and Russian envoy Baron Edouard de Stoeckl signed the Treaty of Cession. With a stroke of a pen, Tsar Alexander II had ceded Alaska, his country’s last remaining foothold in North America, to the United States for US$7.2 million.

That sum, amounting to just $125 million in 2019 dollars, brought to an end Russia’s 125year odyssey in Alaska and its expansion across the treacherous Bering Sea, which at one point extended the Russian Empire as far south as Fort Ross, California, 90 miles from San Francisco Bay. Today Alaska is one of the richest U.S. states thanks to its abundance of natural resources, such as petroleum, gold and fish, as well as its vast expanse of pristine wilderness and strategic location as a window on Russia and gateway to the Arctic.

So what prompted Russia to withdraw from its American beachhead? And how did it come to possess it in the first place?

As a descendant of Inupiaq Eskimos, I have been living and studying this history all my life.

RUSSIA LOOKS EAST The lust for new lands that brought Russia to Alaska and eventually California began in the 16th century, when the country was a fraction of its current size.

That began to change in 1581, when Russia overran a Siberian territory known as the Khanate of Sibir, which was controlled by a descendant of Genghis Khan. This key victory opened up Siberia, and within 60 years the Russians were at the Pacific.

The Russian advance across Siberia was fueled in part by the lucrative fur trade, a desire to expand the Russian Orthodox Christian faith to the “heathen” populations in the east and the addition of new taxpay-

ers and resources to the empire.

In the early 18th century, Peter the Great – who created Russia’s first Navy – wanted to know how far the Asian landmass extended to the east. The Siberian city of Okhotsk became the staging point for two explorations he ordered. And in 1741, Vitus Bering successfully crossed the strait that bears his name and sighted Mt. Saint Elias, near what is now the village of Yakutat, Alaska.

Although Bering’s second Kamchatka Expedition brought disaster for him personally when adverse weather on the return journey led to a shipwreck on one of the westernmost Aleutian Islands and his eventual death from scurvy in December 1741, it was an incredible success for Russia. The surviving crew fixed the ship, stocked it full of hundreds of the sea otters, foxes and fur seals that were abundant there and returned to Siberia, impressing Russian fur hunters with their valuable cargo. This prompted something akin to the Klondike gold rush that happened 150 years later.

A demographic threat to the culture of growth

emographic experts increasingly agree that the extraordinary trend of population growth that took place over the past 200 years has already changed course. Darrell Bricker and John Ibbitson, the authors of the book “Empty Planet,” suggest that a complete reversal of the trend may be at hand.

Writing for Foreign Affairs, economist Zachary Karabell predicts that a declining global population will most likely lead to the end of capitalism, at least in its current form. To avoid the worst, he suggests that governments seek to implement “policies that might preserve and even invigorate the basic contours of capitalism by setting much lower expectations of future returns and

focusing society on reducing costs (which technology is already doing) rather than maximizing output.”

Anyone familiar with the way politics works in Western democracies will agree with Karabell when he notices the obvious. As soon as mention is made of such policies, the political class, echoed by the media, will greet them with cries of “heresy!” Given the way decisions are made today, intelligent planning aimed at managing what will, in any case, be a major paradigm shift appears is on no one’s agenda.

Karabell identifies the sources of resistance: “But those policies would likely be met in the short term by furious opposition from business interests, policymakers, and governments, all of whom would claim that such attitudes are de-

featist and could spell an end not just to growth but to prosperity and high standards of living, too.”

In the economic and political culture that has dominated thought in the West at least since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, “growth” and “prosperity” don’t simply designate economic expansion and accumulated wealth. Both words carry with them the weight of a moral imperative.

We are taught to feel that we must constantly grow and we seek to be prosperous. In the West, someone who fails to make decisions on that basis and even dedicate their lives to those aims will be considered morally deficient. It’s the culture rather than the logic of the situation that obliges politicians to reject suggestions that may slow growth or reduce prosperity.

Given our current ways of thinking and the cate-

gories imposed by our economic culture — growth is necessary, consumption and increased capitalization are good — no politician dares do anything other than ignore and reject policies that acknowledge the changing trends.

This is especially true when they involve serious paradigm shifts that will limit all future choices. In this case, the shift includes three major factors: the increasingly visible transformation of a planet disfigured by climate change, the demographic reversal that Bricker and John Ibbitson describe, and the effects on traditional employment of automation (artificial intelligence and robotics).

Thirty years later, however, the entity set up to handle Russia’s American explorations failed. Not long after, the Russians began to seriously question whether they could continue their Alaskan colony as well.

The colony was no longer profitable after the sea otter population was decimated, Alaska was difficult to defend and Russia was short on cash due to the costs of the war in Crimea. The Russians were ready to sell. But what motivated the Americans to buy?

In Alaska, the Americans foresaw a potential for gold, fur and fisheries, as well as more trade with China and Japan.

The Americans worried that England might try to establish a presence in the territory, and the acquisition of Alaska – it was believed – would help the U.S. become a Pacific power.

Trump asks Pak PM Imran to lower rhetoric New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has in a phone conversation asked Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan to “moderate rhetoric” with India over the situation in Jammu and Kashmir in an effort to reduce tensions.

Trump’s call with Khan - the second in less than a week - came soon after a 30-minute conversation with PM Modi on Monday, during which PM Modi raised the issue of “extreme rhetoric and incitement to anti-India violence” by leaders of Pakistan.

Trump spoke by telephone with Khan to discuss “the need to reduce tensions and moderate rhetoric with India over the situation in Jammu and Kashmir,” the White House said. Washington: The United States on Monday extended a ban on the use of US passports for travel to North Korea for another year, the State Department said in a statement.

The ban, which will go into effect on September 1, renders US passports invalid for travel to North Korea and is reportedly motivated by Washington’s concerns about “the serious risk of arrest and long-term detention in North Korea”, local media reported after citing the statement. The travel ban was imposed in September 2017 in the wake

of the death of Otto Warmbier, an American college student who was detained in the North and died shortly after his return to the US in a coma. Exceptions can be granted to journalists and for humanitarian reasons for a single trip.

The measure was renewed once in 2018. It will now remain in place until August 31, 2020.

American citizens interested in going to North Korea for humanitarian- or journalism-related purposes will be able to apply for exceptions through the State Department, the statement read. —ANI

A finance ministry source who reviewed the report said it recommended an overhaul of the Income Tax Act. “The committee has said the government should move away from surcharges on income and reduce corporate tax to 25 per cent,” the source who declined to be identified told Reuters.

Government imposes a 30 per cent corporate tax rate on domestic companies and 40 per cent on foreign firms,

plus a 4 per cent health and education surcharge on total tax payments.

It also charges a surcharge of 12 per cent for domestic companies and 5 per cent for foreign companies if their taxable income exceeds Rs. 10 crore, according to Deloitte. The panel was formed in 2017 and tasked with bringing the income tax law in line with other countries, and incorporating best practices according to the needs of the economy. —Agencies

Aniston said she was a ‘major fan’ of this ‘one can’t miss wellness ritual’.

Cox and she were so into these saunas that the 55-year-old star, who played Monica Geller in the much-loved sitcom, has even bought a portable one so she could enjoy at any time with Aniston.

It reportedly helps augment skin radiance, and ‘Vogue’ magazine said it helps ‘release of endorphins, increased circulation and relaxed mind and muscles which leads to better sleep’.

“My friend Courteney Cox you may know her - had a portable infrared sauna that you go into. It kind of looks like a little igloo,” said Aniston, adding: “It’s such a game changer in terms of your skin detoxification and cell rejuvenation. So that I do a couple times a week right after I do the gym. I’ve noticed a real change in my energy, and my sleep, and my skin,” she added.

Cast of ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’

ilmmaker Karan Johar made his directorial debut in 1998 with ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji. The film continues to be a fan favourite, but the director feels the romantic-drama is the most politically incorrect film.

“KKHH is the most politically incorrect film.

I remember (actress) Shabana Azmi saw the film somewhere in the UK and she called me. She was aghast,” he recalled, adding: “She

told me, ‘what have you shown? That a girl has short hair, so she’s not attractive, and now her hair is long and she’s pretty? What do you have to say to this?’ I said I’m sorry. She said, ‘what? that’s all you have to say?’

I said yes because I know you’re right.”

Karan opened up about the film while delivering a chat about ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ at Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, to celebrate 20 years of the blockbuster.

He has come a long way since then. As a producer, he has supported films such as ‘Raazi’ and ‘2 States’ that highlight the strength of female characters.

“We get less credit for the kind of films we make now or produce. We are still tagged only as mainstream, which isn’t true,” he said.

Randeep begins shooting for ‘Rat On A Highway’

ollywood powerhouse Randeep Hooda has commenced shooting for his next outing ‘Rat On A Highway’ in Scotland.

In the upcoming thriller, he will play an advertising professional who cannot remember the last 48 hours of his life.

Randeep, the entire cast and crew of the film is from the United Kingdom. They will be shooting with three cameras, with the ‘Sarbjit’ actor mouthing lines in both Hindi and English.

Most of the shooting will take place in the night with the makers hoping to wrap up the actor’s portions in 24 days.

Naadar, who has worked on films like ‘Manji: The Mountain Man,’ earlier opened up about Randeep’s character in the film.

“Randeep will play the role of an advertising professional who is unable to recollect the last 48 hours of his life.

He is in the middle of a highway, trying to piece it all together,” Naadar said.

He continued, “This film was originally conceived by Sunil Saini, Sunny Deol’s manager.

I really liked the concept and suggested we reach out to Randeep as we needed an actor par excellence. Fortunately, he loved the script too.”

Naadar also informed that the actor reached Scotland three days prior to the first day of shoot for a workshop.

Apart from this film, The ‘Highway’ actor recently wrapped up Imtiaz Ali’s next, also featuring Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan. —ANI

Seema Goswami was in the Pink City for the launch of her new novel ‘Race Course Road’ on Monday

enowned columnist, author and journalist Seema Goswami was in the Pink City on Monday evening for the launch of her new fiction novel ‘Race Course Road’ at Hotel ITC Rajputana.

She was in a conversation with Dr Anita Hada, where she spoke about how when she started the novel, it was a spy novel but ended up being a political one. It took Seema about a year to write this novel, where she closely modelled the characters; the readers might think that the characters in the book are inspired from real-life political bodies, but towards the end of the book, that is

not what it would turn out to be.

There is always a fine line between fiction and reality; on asking about if she was getting stereotypical in the novel, she said, “It’s strange because when I started writing my first book, there was no armed scandal in the scene; it all came much after my book came out. Right now, I am writing this sequel which has some things about Kashmir, and there are sudden events happening- now I have to change all of it because it would look like I’m copying the work.

akshyaraj Singh Mewar, hailing from Udaipur, has gotten his name enlisted in the Guinness Book Of World Record for collecting stationery materials worth 20 thousand kilograms in just 24 hours. The representatives of Guinness Book of World Record congratulated and honoured Mewar on Tuesday in Udaipur.

Lakshyaraj is the executive director of HRH Group of Hotels, Udaipur and is also a trustee of Maharana Mewar Charitable Foundation. According to the records, on the occasion of Independence Day, Lakshyayraj appealed to the citizens to collect and donate the stationery like pens, pencils, erasers, notebooks, geometry

boxes, calculators, paint, paintbrush, lunch boxes, bags, water bottles, etc. which are not being used at homes to be donated to the less fortunate students who are unable to afford all this.

The stationery was distributed to the students on Tuesday and the principals of the
