SHRADDHA MURDER
New Delhi: A week since the arrest of Aaftab Poonawala, po lice have been scouring for evidence to nail him in court for the murder of Shradha Walkar but it remains a challenge as the crime was detected after nearly six months. USE RELIGION TO BRIDGE THE LINGUISTIC DIVIDE WITH TAMILS

“Large, lucrative industries offer opportunities to move and launder money; as a result, in many parts of the world, deforestation is driven by the drug trade,” she reported. In the Amazon, for example, drug traffickers are illegally logging forests and hiding cocaine in timber shipments to Europe.

“Promoting sustainable production and consumption are critical to halting deforestation worldwide. But in my view, national and industry leaders also have to root organized crime and illicit markets out of these commodity chains,” Devine concluded

Brazil’s president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, was greeted with applause and cheers when he addressed the U.N. climate conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, on Nov. 16, 2022. As he had in his campaign, Lula pledged to stop rampant deforesta tion in the Amazon, which his predecessor, Jair Bolsan aro, had encouraged.

Forests play a critical role in slowing climate change by taking up carbon dioxide, and the Amazon rainforest absorbs one-fourth of the CO2 absorbed by all the land on Earth. These articles from The Conversation’s archive examine stresses on the Am azon and the Indigenous groups who live there.

1. MASSIVE LOSSES

The Amazon rainforest is vast, covering some 2.3 mil lion square miles (6 million square kilometers). It ex tends over eight countries, with about 60% of it in Bra zil. And the destruction oc curring there is also enor mous. From 2010 to 2019, the Amazon lost 24,000 square miles (62,000 square kilome ters) of forest – the equiva lent of about 10.3 million U.S. football fields. Much of this land was turned into cattle ranches, farms and palm oil plantations.

Forest clearance in the re gion threatens people, wild species and freshwater sup plies along with the climate.

“The farmers, commercial interest groups and others looking for cheap land all have a clear vested interest in deforestation going ahead, but any possible short-term gain is clearly outweighed by long-term loss,” Vittert con cluded.

2. LEGALIZING LAND GRABS

Much of the Amazon has been under state control for decades. In the 1970s, Brazil’s military government started encouraging farmers and miners to move into the re gion to spur economic devel opment, while also setting some zones aside for conser vation. More recently, how ever, Brazil’s government has made it easier for wealthy interests to seize large swaths of land – including in conser vation areas and Indigenous territories.

Reviewing national laws and land holdings, Universi ty of Florida geographers Gabriel Cardoso Carrero, Cynthia S. Simmons and Robert T. Walker found that Brazil’s National Congress was expanding the legal size of private holdings in the Amazon even before Bolson

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the “No Money for Terror” conference, some countries use terror as part of their for eign policy and called for im position of cost on nations backing terror. Action against sponsors of terror ism, unfortunately, is selec tive as geo-political interests come into play.

Road building in the Ama zon, which increased dramat ically during Bolsonaro’s tenure, brings development and related threats like wild fires into wild areas. Univer sity of Richmond geographer David Salisbury also saw it as an existential threat to Indig enous communities.

4. FIVE GLOBAL DEFORESTATION DRIVERS:

BEEF, SOY, PALM OIL, WOOD –AND CRIME

A small handful of highly lu crative commodities are the main causes of deforestation in the Amazon and other tropical regions around the world. In Brazil, much of the land is cleared for raising beef cattle or cultivating soy. In Indonesia and Malaysia, palm oil production is spur ring large-scale rainforest destruction. Wood produc tion, for pulp and paper prod ucts as well as fuel, is also a major driver in Asia and Af rica.

“Making the supply chains for these four commodities more sustainable is an im portant strategy for reducing deforestation,” wrote Texas State University geographer Jennifer Devine. But Devine also found a fifth factor inter woven with these four indus tries: organized crime.

and Iraq. Pakistan was ex posed when Osama bin Laden was found hiding on its soil and the US immediately sus pended its financial aid to Is lamabad. It was Donald Trump who said that Paki stan “does not do a damn thing” and that its $1.3 billion aid will remain suspended till it acts against terror havens.

The same strong action is not taken by the US or other western countries when dead ly terror attacks take place in India. Even designating Masood Azhar, deputy leader of the JeM terror group at the UN was blocked by China which backs Pakistan when it comes to sponsoring terror ism in India. The prime min ister rightly pointed out that such selective approach won’t weed out terror.

If India’s North-South (read Tamil Nadu) linguistic divide can be bridged it will re quire a subtle mix of religion and politics, like the one in focus at Kashi Tamil Sanga mam. Tamil Nadu and the Tamil language have been at the fore front of preserving India’s an cient religious and spiritual cul ture. Tamil Nadu, which has an ancient Shiva temple at Ramesh waram, and Varanasi with its Kashi Vishwanath temple have had very close and ancient ties. Thousands of pilgrims from Ta mil Nadu throng Kashi every year bridging the gap politicians try to widen because of the lan guage dispute. The Kashi Tamil Sangamam will help narrow the linguistic divide through spirit ualism and religion.

The naysayers might see BJP’s initiative as politically driven, but the only aspect the Sangamam highlights is unity in diversity. The richness of Ta mil and its culture and that of Hindi and Sanskrit must be used for each other’s mutual en richment. Kashi-Tamil sangam is indeed as holy as the Ganga and Yamuna’s confluence.

SPIRITUAL SPEAK

The one who has conquered himself is a far greater hero than he who has defeated a thousand times a thousand men.

POLLS TO DECIDE GUJ’S FATE IN NEXT 25 YRS: PM

At a rally in the Botad district, Prime Minister Narendra Modi says it is for voters to shape the destiny of the state in the coming years

Cong has nothing in Guj, that’s why Rahul Baba is not coming: Amit Shah

Botad (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the state Assembly elec tions in Gujarat will determine where the state will be in the next 25 years.

Addressing a public rally in the Botad dis trict of Gujarat on Sun day, the PM said it was for voters to shape the destiny of the state in the coming years. Ex horting people to vote the BJP back to power in the western state, the Prime Minister, during his 30-minute-long speech in native tongue, Gujarati, said, “This election is not only for the next five years, it will determine what Gujarat looks lie in the next 25 years.” The PM’s visit to the Botad district was part of a jam-packed campaign schedule on Sunday.

Amreli: Addressing a public rally in the Amreli dis trict of poll-bound Gujarat on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he feels like home whenever he visits the district. “Whenever I come to Amreli, I feel like home. The sheer turnout of people here shows which way the election is going this time. The levers of election are not with politicians or candidates, but in the hands of the people who have turned out in such huge numbers today,” the PM said.

Rajkot: In an apparent swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, the Congress leader walked with a woman who tried everything to derail the Narmada Project. Earlier on Saturday, during the Maharashtra leg of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Rahul Gandhi was joined by activ ist Medha Patkar who spearheaded the Narmada Bachao Aandolan to prevent the displacement of locals due to the water of the Dam.

Tapi (ANI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday took a swipe at Congress lead er Rahul Gandhi, who is currently leading Bharat Jodo Yatra in Maharashtra, over his absence from the elec tion campaign in Guja rat and said that Con gress has nothing in Gujarat, that’s why “Ra hul Baba” is not coming to Gujarat for cam paigning and is roam ing in other places.

While addressing an election rally in Tapi district of Gujarat, the Home Minister further said that ever since the BJP government came to power in Gujarat, there has been develop ment in every field.

“There is a BJP govern ment in Gujarat since 1990 and the Congress is saying that the work of the Congress speaks for itself. When it is not in power since 1990, then what is the work of Congress? Congress misleads the people.

The party which has not been in power for ages, then of what work is it talking? Congress should be ashamed.

Ever since the BJP gov ernment came to power in Gujarat, there has been development in every field,” he said.

Modi govt weakening laws enacted by UPA govt for tribals: RaGa

Buldhana (PTI): Con gress leader Rahul Gan dhi on Sunday accused the Narendra Modi-led central government of weakening laws framed by the UPA to empower tribals, and said his party will strengthen them further after com ing to power again.

Addressing the Adi vasi Mahila Workers' Sammelan at JalgaonJamod in Maharash tra’s Buldhana district, Rahul Gandhi said trib als are the “first own ers” of the country and have equal rights like other citizens.

The Modi govern ment was weakening laws like the Panchay ats (Extension to Sched uled Areas) Act, Forest Rights Act, Land Rights, Panchayat Raj Act and the reservation for women in local bodies, Gandhi said.

Buldhana (PTI): Congress General Secretary (com munications) Jairam Ramesh on Sunday said the Bharat Jodo Yatra is a “revolutionary moment” for national politics as well as the party and not an event, and converting it into electoral success will take a while. Addressing a press conference on the last day of the foot march’s Maharashtra leg, Ramesh claimed people were looking for an alternative and wanted to get rid of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). “'The Congress is the only ideology that presents an alter native to the BJP and the RSS. The Bharat Jodo Yatra is a revolutionary moment for national politics and the Congress and not an event,” Ramesh said.

Jamnagar: Former UP deputy CM Dinesh Sharma on Sunday held a meeting with BJP workers here, reviewing preparations for the Assembly elections. At the meeting, Sharma told BJP workers to spread out and reach out to the last voter. He added that the BJP was working to implement Gujarat’s ‘development model’ across the length and breadth of the country. Later, speaking to ANI, Sharma said, “The leader ship of PM Narendra Modi and the positive intent with which our govt has Gujarat forward over the last five years gives us the confi dence of returning to power with the maximum seats.”

Bharuch (PTI): Even two years after the death of Congress’ veteran leader and trou bleshooter Ahmed Patel, this electoral season in Gujarat, he is still the party’s ace in his native Bharuch district. While the AAP strives to project itself as the BJP’s main rival in PM Narendra Modi’s home state, the Congress is a significant factor for a seizable section of the people in Bharuch. “All the devel opments that you see in Bharuch today are the result of his (Patel’s) efforts. Ahmed Bhai was such a tall figure that no one can ever forget him,” a local said.

Ahmedabad (PTI): The Centre’s decision of 10% EWS reservation without disturbing the existing quota re solved many issues of the Patels and the communi ty will ensure BJP’s victory in the assembly polls, party leader Hardik Patel said. The spearhead of the 2015 Patidar quota stir said the agitation had directly impacted nearly 20 assem bly segments in the 2017 Gujarat election. He had supported the Congress in the 2017 polls. The Centre in January 2019 imple mented the 10% reserva tion for the EWS.

A test of Akhilesh’s leadership skills! MAINPURI-RAMPUR

TOUCH OF LOVE?

Lucknow: Mainpuri Lok Sabha poll is like do or die for Samajwadi Party President Akhile sh Yadav as it is a test of his leadership. After los ing the Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat he won in the by-election, he has no op tion but to ensure that his party wins the Main puri seat. Keep in mind that SP won the seats of Azamgarh and Mainpu ri even in the most diffi cult times. For the first time in the 2014 elec tions, being held under the leadership of Naren dra Modi, the SP won both the seats and in 2019 also the party won both the seats. But after per forming very well in the

2022 assembly elections, when Akhilesh Yadav decided to remain an MLA instead of an MP, he left the Azamgarh seat and the party lost that seat in the by-elec tion. Not only this, the party also lost Rampur seat, where MP Azam Khan had resigned.

Now polls are being

held on Azam Khan’s as sembly seat and Main puri seat, which fell va cant after the death of Mulayam Singh Yadav. These polls are a test of Akhilesh’s leadership. Taking no chances, Akhilesh has fielded his wife Dimple. Uncle Shiv pal has also been includ ed in the list of star cam

paigners of the party. The BJP has fielded Raghuraj Singh Shakya, who was close to Shiv pal. Keep in mind that Akhilesh's cousin Dhar mendra Yadav was de feated on the Azamgarh seat. That's why it is very important for Akh ilesh to ensure Dimple’s victory in Mainpuri.

GRAND PROBLEM OF GOP

Sangh means not PM Modi or VHP: Bhagwat

Jabalpur (Agencies): RSS chief Mohan Bhag wat said Sangh does only work to organise Shakha, influence peo ple to work for nation.

“Sangh ka kam hai aadat dalna” (RSS’ job is to make a habit).

Bhagwat also said that PM Narendra Modi “is a swayamsewak and

pracharak, and even to day he is working as a pracharak.” “Yes Modi ji has been a Sangh swayamsevak and also a pracharak. The VHP too is run by our Sway amsevaks. But the Sangh in no way direct ly or remote controls them, they work inde pendently,” he said.

Will lack of aggression result in Cong’s weakening?

New Delhi: Whether the competition is on the playground or in the field of elections, a great player is one who puts all his/her strength into winning. But it seems that the Congress party does not believe in this principle, rather trusts on conserving its strength. It seems that Congress leaders think that keeping it safe will increase their strength.

Maximum show of

strength, during elec tions, increases power. Congress leaders should learn this from Prime Minister Naren dra Modi. He works so hard in every election as if his fate is at stake in this election. Dozens of rallies, meetings, roadshows, election strategy meetings, talks with leaders, he does all the work while being the Prime Minister. In contrast, the Congress fights every election in a half-hearted manner.

For example, Himachal Pradesh elec tions were just held, but only Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s rallies were

held for four days. If Ra hul Gandhi, who is car rying out the Bharat Jodo Yatra could cam paign in Gujarat, then

could he not go to Himachal, even if for one day? Sonia Gan dhi’s health is not good but it is being said that she can attend the rally to be held in Shegaon in Maharashtra. She had gone to Karnataka to participate in the Bharat Jodo Yatra. But she did not go to Himachal to hold a sin gle meeting, nor did she write a letter or issue an appeal to the people of Himachal. If Rahul Gandhi goes to Gujarat,

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will not go. Congress party is using Priyanka in installments. She is the general secretary of the party and she should work hard in elections everywhere.

The ruling party of the country contests the elections with full force but the main opposi tion party shies from taking an aggressive stand in every election and as a result its ‘strength’ is continu ously getting depleted.

De loitte expects “India to post a 6.5-7.1% growth during FY22–23 (April 2022 to March 2023) and 5.5-6.1% the following year contingent on the revival of the global economy and improving economic fundamentals.” India’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 8.7% in the 2021-22 fiscal year.

Decriminalise GST law, slash personal I-T rates in Budget

New Delhi (ANI): Industry body CII has pitched for a reduction in personal in come tax rates, decriminal isation of the goods and services tax and a relook at the capital gains tax rates as part of its agenda pre sented to the government for the forthcoming Budget.

Arguing that the GST law already contains adequate penal provisions for deter rence against evasion of taxes, CII has suggested de criminalisation of GST law.

Also, the applicability of prosecution provisions should not be based on the absolute amount of tax evasion but should be based on real intent to evade the taxes and a cer tain percentage of the tax payable, it stated.

“A fresh look is needed at the capital gains tax with

If the post-pandemic fashion era has taught us anything, it’s to value easy and comfy clothing. A few shapes have become wider and baggier throughout time, and the greatest items for autumn have followed suit. But don’t misunderstand; oversized fits don’t necessar

fitting top to prevent feeling as though your clothes are wearing you. By doing this, the proportions are balanced out. The best thing is that you won’t even realise you’re wearing jeans since they’ll feel so comfy.

An additional classy op tion to embrace this style is to wear a roomy blazer. Your blazer will seem stylish and contemporary, thanks to the large fit, and not like you’re going to the workplace. How ever, you can certainly wear yours to work with your fa vourite pair of pants and a button-up. Try toying with proportions by wearing it with slim-fitting jeans or faux-leather pants if you want to keep it basic.

For a simple athleisure outfit, put a jacket over a sports bra and cycle shorts if you’d rather channel some ‘80s royalty. Compared to a fitted one, an oversized but ton-up is a far more weara ble. Yours may be worn open with a cropped tank under neath for a more carefree ap pearance. Alternatively, keep it closed for a more el egant appearance that will work for both date night and the office. No matter what colour you pick, this closet essential is radi cally transformed by an oversized fit.

Is there anything cosi er than a sweater that feels like your favourite blanket wrapped around you? No, we’d say. Choose a big sweat er instead of a tight one, ide ally in a size larger than nor mal. For the ultimate coolgirl style, score extra points by wearing yours with big jeans and clogs.

RESTAURANT DE SEOUL

Despite being a little on the small side, Restaurant De Seoul’s environment succeeds by creating a cosy atmosphere. Instead of a picture-perfect setting, anticipate a menu full of traditional Korean dishes, such as exquisite chicken ginseng soup and stir-fried hog intestines. You should be prepared for adventurous meat cuts and novel ingredients because this isn’t seasoned to suit a pan-Asian palate.
