CBI SCALES BOUNDARY TO NET CHIDAMBARAM A WEDNESDAY

F

ormer Finance Minister P Chidambaram was arrested by the CBI Wednesday night from his residence in connection with INX media corruption case after dramatic developments with the agency sleuths scaling walls to gain access to the bungalow in the high-end Jor Bagh locality.

“Mr P Chidambaram has been arrested in connection with INX media case,” a senior official of the agency said.

A CBI spokesperson said, he has been arrested on basis of a warrant issued by a competent court.

Chidambaram will spend the night in the suit No. 5 of the CBI Guest House on the ground floor of the agency headquarters. A medical examination will be conducted and he will be produced before a special CBI court on Thursday, where the agency will seek his remand.

The CBI which was looking for 73-year old Chidambaram since Tuesday after his anticipatory bail application was rejected by the Delhi High Court managed to get a whiff of his location only when he appeared on camera at the Congress headquarters in the evening to make a press statement.

Rejecting reports of his evading the law, he told reporters that the charges against him and his son were “nothing further from truth”.

Flanked by senior Supreme Court lawyers and party colleagues Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Chidambaram said he was working with his lawyers through the last night, preparing his papers for his bail application, which was filed before the Supreme Court earlier.

Coaching centres seek time to set things right

Ask JDA to give two months time to arrange for parking, security etc Abhishek Srivastav Jaipur: The coaching centres which are running against the building regulations have sought two months time from JDA to making arrangements of parking and security.

They presented their side during a meeting convened in JDA by SP Priti Jain. JDA has conducted a survey of 150 coaching centres in zones 1 to 8 and issued notices to 115 of them for non compliance of building regulations.

In the meeting on Wednesday, while on one side the coaching centres gave their views, SP Priti Jain, JMC’s deputy commissioner of fire Abha Beniwal and other officials spoke about the security of the kids.

SIT on Pehlu case begins investigation in Behror First India News Jaipur: The SIT team formed on the instructions of the government in the Pehlu Khan mob lynching case reached Behror police station on Wednesday to initiate investigation in the matter.

Consumer Forum penalises hospital: State Consumer Forum has levied a penalty of Rs25 lakh on a hospital in Bharatpur in a six-year old case.

One Avdhesh Awasthi, of Bharatpur, had admitted his wife, who was six months pregnant, in Arora Hospital after she suddenly fell ill. There due to negligence of doctors, she was operated upon and gave birth to premature child that died soon. Doctors then sewed her uterus with urinary bladder. Rajiv and Vaibhav had gone to Punjab recently and during Assembly session both had met RCA President Dr CP Joshi. Speculations were being made since then that Vaibhav wants to play his innings in cricket. There are speculations that Vaibhav might be fielded for the election for the post of President. However, after the court order, the matter has become entangled in legal hurdles.

Mumbai: Minister of State for Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) President Raj Thackeray - who has been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday for investigation - secured support from an unexpected quarter, his estranged cousin and ruling ally Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray.

Speaking to media persons at his residence, Uddhav Thackeray expressed indirect backing by commenting that nothing would emerge from his (Raj’s) interrogation by the ED. “I don’t think there will be any outcome from his (Raj’s) investigation by the ED tomorrow,” Uddhav said.

olitical economy has come a long way. Many figures and institutions that have long embraced neoliberalism increasingly recognize the failures of markets and acknowledge that states may have a role to play in improving socioeconomic outcomes.

Even the International Monetary Fund now discusses the “macro-criticality” of social protection, the need for progressive taxation, and, potentially, universal transfers.

But the conversation – which focuses almost exclusively on coordination between state and market – remains too narrow to produce effective solutions. For that, as a new report by UN Women shows, social factors – especially the role of families and gender equality – must also be included.

These two factors are inextricably linked, with gender inequalities being heavily reinforced by family dynamics, in a way that, say, racial inequalities are not. The problem is compounded by the fact that outdated assumptions about families and gender dynamics continue to shape social and economic policymaking.

As it stands, only about one-third of all households adhere to the “ideal” family structure (two parents with children) on which policies are typically based. Among the two-thirds that take a different form, a large share are extended households, which include, for example, aunts, uncles, or grandparents. About a quarter of all households are either single-parent or single-person.

Moreover, while marriage remains virtually universal in some parts of the world, it is becoming less common in others, with even long-term partners often choosing to cohabitate before or instead of getting married. In some countries in Latin America, Southern Africa, and Europe, up to three-quarters of women aged 25-29 who are in relationships are cohabiting with their partners.

All of this has important policy implications. Given their greater longevity, women over 60 are twice as likely as men of the same age group to be living on their own, often subsisting on a meager pension and/or little, if any, savings.

Furthermore, single-parent households – more than three-quarters of which are headed by single mothers – are, on average, twice as likely as dual-parent households to be living in poverty. Single parents often struggle to balance paid work with their care responsibilities.

But even in dual-parent and higher-income households, women face significant challenges in juggling paid work and unpaid care work. Globally, women perform over 76% of unpaid caregiving, on average – more than three times as much as men.

Who is responsible when an inmate dies by suicide?

effrey Epstein’s suicide in New York’s Metropolitan Correction Center on Aug. 10 has brought new attention to the troubling reality of inmates who kill themselves in America’s jails and prisons.

Suicide is, of course, a serious problem more generally. In 2017, it was the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., claiming the lives of over 47,000 people. Today, it takes twice as many American lives as homicide.

But, as someone who teaches and writes about punishment and imprisonment in the U.S., I find something particularly troubling about prison suicide.

American law recognizes a “special relationship” between the jailer and the

prisoner, meaning that jailers have a legal responsibility to protect prisoners from harm – including self harm.

So suicide in jails and prisons is more than a personal tragedy. It often indicates a failure in the duty imposed on prison officials.

It also can complicate the pursuit of justice.

When someone awaiting trial ends their life, crime victims are deprived of the opportunity to have the perpetrator brought to justice. And, when someone who has already been tried and convicted commits suicide, that act impedes the public’s legitimate interest in seeing a punishment fully carried out.

Because families either settle or generally don’t prevail if their case goes to trial, there is little pressure from the courts to address suicides among the incarcerated. And, except in cases where there is notoriety, there is also little

public concern such events.

AMERICAN JAILS AND PRISONS Getting a handle on the extent of suicide in jails and prisons is not easy. The U.S. Department of Justice, which is responsible for collecting data on deaths in correctional institutions across the nation, has not made public any new information since 2016.

In 2014 year, 372 inmates killed themselves in local jails, resulting in a suicide rate of 50 deaths per 100,000 inmates.

The large number of suicides in American jails occurs, in part, because they now house many people who, in the past, would have been sent to mental institutions.

Centre appoints Union Home Secy Rajiv Gauba as Cabinet Secretary

New Delhi: Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba was on Wednesday appointed as the next Cabinet Secretary for a tenure of two years.

Gauba, a 1982-batch IAS officer of the Jharkhand cadre, will initially join as the Officer on Special Duty in the Cabinet Secretariat, before he takes over the charge of the country’s top bureaucratic post from the incumbent P K Sinha.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Rajiv Gauba, IAS (JH:1982) as Cabinet Secretary with a tenure of two years from August 30 or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has also approved the appointment of Rajiv Gauba as Officer on Special Duty in the Cabinet Secretariat from the date of his assumption of charge till he takes over as Cabinet

Secretary,” according to an official order.

Gauba took charge as the home secretary on August 31, 2017.

Sixty-year-old Gauba had also served as secretary in the Union urban development ministry, additional secretary

in the home ministry, looking after crucial left wing extremism division, among many other responsibilities.

Gauba has wideranging experience in senior positions at policy making and programme imple-

mentation in both central and state governments and in international organisations.

Born in Punjab, Gauba had graduated in Physics from Patna University. He had served in Jharkhand as the chief

secretary for 15 months before returning to serve in the central government in 2016.

As the Union home secretary, he has handling issues such as internal security, militancy in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast, Maoist problems in the central and east India besides other issues.

Gauba was the key architect of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act under which Jammu and Kashmir was recently divided into two union territories following the abrogation of the special status given to the state under Article 370 of the Constitution. —PTI

The orbit manoeuvre began at 12:50pm and took 1,228 seconds to complete. The orbit achieved is 118 km X 4,412 km.

Besides the Roys, the agency registered an FIR against then CEO Vikramaditya Chandra as well as unidentified government officials on

charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating and corruption, officials said on Wednesday.

ahek Chahal, an Indian actress who made her Bollywood debut with ‘Nayee Padosan’, was in the Pink City shooting for her upcoming reality show ‘A Day with Celebrity’ on Wednesday. She was in an exclusive interview with City First, where she spoke about her journey in the industry so far, her future plans in the web-series, and also a bit about her day in Jaipur.

Opening up about her journey of ups and downs in the industry, Mahek stated, “I started as a model initially, and came to Bombay for acting. I didn’t know people at that time, so I started out as a fashion model, followed by which I got into South Indian movies, shifted to Punjabi movies, and then was a part of a few reality shows. I’m really happy I got to work with so many people and shifted from modelling to acting. I’ve been a part of a lot of genres, my favourite being music and dance.” Mahek feels that for

her, reality shows are very important.

Apparently, people today know her not because of the movies she has been a part of, but mainly because of her personality during these reality shows.

Sharing something about her struggles, she said, “Every profession is difficult- they have a journey which is difficult and have problems, but it is always about how you deal with these problems and how you learn from them. Every career has its ups and downs, and so did mine, which has made me a better person altogether.” She feels that web-series has an opening for a lot of people nowadays; when it comes to movies, the main subject remains untouched, but when it comes to web-series, people have the freedom to raise subjects and showcase the reality to the viewers. She says that she is soon going to be a part of an exciting web-series.

Focussing on her trips so far to the Pink City, she said, “I’ve visited Jaipur a lot of times- most of the times my visit has been for the shows, or for an appearance. I’ve never really gotten the chance to explore the city, but today I explored a lot of it- I went to Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal, Albert Hall Museum, and Jal Mahal, and also tried the amazing food herekachori, ghewar, and what not!”

oah Centineo has bid adieu to Peter Kavinsky from ‘To All the Boys: PS I Still Love You’ for now as the actor announced the wrap up of the upcoming rom-com.

Centineo on Saturday tweeted that he had his last night as Kavinsky and hoped that fans will love the coming instalments as well.

“Tonight was my last night as Peter Kavinsky.

I hope you all love these last instalments as much as we do. Forever grateful for the opportunity to be yours,” he tweeted.

Centineo along with his co-star Lana Condor announced the third film in the series through an Instagram video but did not reveal any further details or the release date yet.

However, they shared that the coming sequel will be premiered on Netflix next year on February 12.

Meanwhile, the third instalment is titled ‘To All the Boys: Always and Forever Lara Jean’.

The forthcoming sequel is based on the second book in the series ‘P.S. I Still Love You.’.

The announcement of the sequel was made in the form of a letter from Netflix.

Taapsee on Tuesday shared a post talking about the importance of sports in a student’s life and how several children don’t get the privilege.

In the image, Taapsee can be seen in a school uniform, sporting a two-braided pigtails, along with two schoolmates.

This plant should be placed after seven steps from the entrance, irrespective of the direction of the entrance.

Plants with white flowers like Raat Raani and Haar Shingar represent Saraswati Ma. These help in the sharpening of brains and peace of mind. These should be planted in the west & north directions.
