SOG arrests two arms smugglers in Chittorgarh Chittorgarh: The Rajasthan Police’s Special Operation Group (SOG) has arrested two alleged arms smugglers in Chittorgarh district, officials said on Saturday.

Based on specific intelligence inputs that illegal arms were being smuggled into Rajasthan from neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, Om Prakash alias Oma (19) and Babu Lal (23) were arrested from the border of the two states on Friday, Additional Director General of Police (SOG) Anil Paliwal said.

The accused, who hail from Rajasthan’s Barmer district, were onboard a bus which was intercepted at the Nimbahera-Neemuch road, he added.

Seven country-made pistols, seven magazines and 74 cartridges were recovered from the accused, Palwal said, adding that they are being interrogated.

Chittorgarh: Three men drowned in a reservoir in a village in Rajasthan’s Chittorgarh district on Saturday while taking a bath, police said.

The incident happened in a reservoir built on the Bedach river in Dhanet Kalan village. One of the victims fell into the water and the others dived in to save him, but all three drowned, officials said.

They were identified as Balkishan Lodha

(25), Shivanshu Bhatt (22) and Pankaj Jatia (22), the police added.

The bodies were fished out by a team of the State Disaster Relief Force and professional divers, and handed over to family members after post-mortem, they said.

State Cooperative Minister Udai Lal Anjana said that a compensation of Rs 4 lakh will be provided to the family members of the each of the victims.

along with necessary protection for bankers will help step up credit offtake and private investments. Easier KYC, lower interest rates and faster loan processing will enhance retail consumption,” Shah said in a tweet.

New Delhi: Association for Protection of Civil Rights has moved the Supreme Court seeking directions to declare the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act, 2019, ‘unconstitutional’. The Act confers power upon the Central govt to designate an individual as a terrorist.

The petition challenged the Constitutional validity of Section 35 and Section 36 of the UAPA that paved the way for government to notify an individual as a terrorist. The NGO, which has filed the petition, said lifelong stigma gets attached to a person notified as terrorist even after being denotified. The plea also said to declare the UAPA violative of fundamental rights.

Democrats fear that the world has entered darker phase of its postwar history

I

n the late 1970s and early 1980s, prominent international relations experts such as the late French political philosopher Pierre Hassner argued that the world was witnessing a process of competitive decay between the United States and the Soviet Union.

For the latter, the conflict in Afghanistan was about to become an even costlier failure than the Vietnam war had been for America. By 1989, the verdict was clear: The Soviet Union had atrophied much faster than the US, and its empire collapsed, the victim of its own errors and contradictions.

Today, the concept of competitive decay of ideological and political models seems to be relevant once again. In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that the liberal democratic ideal had become “obsolete.” Yet the crowds of protesters demonstrating in the streets of Moscow and, much more spectacularly, Hong Kong, suggest that the authoritarian model has plenty of problems of its own.

True, worried democrats now fear that the world has entered a third, darker phase of its postwar history. The first phase, from 1945 until 1989, was dominated by the Cold War. The second, between 1990 and 2016, represented a fragile victory for liberal democratic regimes. But now, the argument goes, the world is in a new, dangerous populist era that began with the victory of the Brexiteers in the United Kingdom and the election of President Donald Trump in the US. Yet this interpretation may reflect the current general mood of pessimism and resignation as much as objective reality. Populism itself is currently under attack in several Central European countries, including the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Romania. And in France, President Emmanuel Macron is defending the classical liberal democratic model far more robustly than many of his critics had expected.

Reports of the demise of democracy and freedom, and the victory of populism and authoritarianism, are thus premature. If anything, the longing for freedom and democracy is on the rise. This suggests that reason has not yet been crushed by negative emotions.

Thus, the age-old question remains: which model – democracy or autocracy – is more vulnerable? The outcome is not predetermined, and will of course depend on political personalities, events, and cultures.

In that regard, the 2020 US presidential election could prove crucial. Moreover, uncertainty regarding the outcome is greater than it was before the past two elections.

Rightly, few people thought that Barack Obama would lose in 2012.

ay! What an “out of world experience”. Such expressions are often shared in the social milieu. The expression is an outburst of achieving an intense feeling of bodily joy in response to a physical, visual or mental stimulus. Such an event takes you away from the world connecting the space or your true-self in a cosmic union paving way for redemption.

In my student life, I used to hear the phrase “foreign hand”, being used by politicians while referring to the ones who

‘messed up” our country’s affairs. Later as a young medical graduate, I was astonished to learn that there is an “Alien Hands Syndrome”, a neurological disorder, in which the individual tends to dissociate himself from the hand and its action giving a feeling that it does not belong to him. The sufferer believes to be possessed by an alien spirit. In both situations, the out-of-the-world experience, and the Alien Hands Syndrome, it is the right brain, which does the trick.

Anatomically, the brain has two hemispheres – right and left - which generally complement and combine to perform different functions. While, the left is logical, verbal, analytical and calculative, the right brain is imaginative, emotional, artistic and connects the human body with space.

fully utilizes the right brain, it can produce a long-lasting out-of-the-world experience, which is a pain-free state of pleasure and serenity, a state of euphoria.

Is America really the ‘Land of the Free’?

F

reedom is under attack around the world. Police are rounding up hundreds of opposition protesters in Moscow, while hundreds of thousands are protesting in Hong Kong for freer elections, a free press and freedom from extradition to China.

Yet in the United States, the hard right is taking extraordinary actions to restrict freedoms for half the population: women. Six states have passed laws in 2019 banning abortion.

These so-called “heartbeat bills” ban abortion before many women even know they are pregnant. Alabama went even further in May, passing a near-total ban on abortion, and Tennessee just announced it plans to do the same.

The Trump administration is taking a different approach with its “protect life” rule that withholds federal funding from family planning clinics like Planned Parenthood unless they stop providing abortion services. This will leave millions of women with no options in unwanted pregnancies, and no choice in what they do with their own bodies.

It’s time to call these rules what they are: attacks on our basic freedoms. I’m proud that America is the “land of the free,” but those words ring hollow when half the population is prevented from seeking basic health care to address life-changing circumstances. It’s time to fight for the millions depending on family-planning & medical services provided by Planned Parenthood & others

in 2017. That number could fall to zero as women are forced into dangerous situations without access to basic health care services.

The Trump administration’s “protect life” rule is even more far-reaching because it withholds critical federal funding for familyplanning clinics unless they stop even informing

women that abortion is a health-care option.

Planned Parenthood provided family-planning and health-care services to over 4 million people in 2017. Two-thirds were women and men of color and two-thirds were on low incomes. Nearly half had no health insurance. Defunding these clinics would leave many Americans without options, and the impact could have significant consequences.

Planned Parenthood provided HIV testing for over 740,000 people in 2017 and diagnosed 240,000 sexually transmitted infections. This not only impacts women, but men and children as well, and it disproportionately impacts people of color. This fight, like the ones in Moscow and Hong Kong, is far from over.

ACT NOW What can we do? Concerned people made over 350,000 calls to members of Congress and gathered 1.5 million signatures in response to the Trump administration’s attempts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act and block funding for Planned Parenthood. Putting this pressure on elected leaders is the best way to fight back, but we can do more.

The Supreme Court confirmed the right to abortion in Roe. Wade almost a half-century ago. That’s why the quickest way to fight restriction efforts like this new “Protect Life” rule may be through the courts. Courts, applying the holding of Roe and other abortion decisions, should strike these state laws down.

Plumes of thick smoke rose into the sky above dense forest in the northwestern state of Rondonia, where bright orange flames from various fires were visible for kilometers. “It’s not normal and it’s like this because of the smoke from the fires,” said a hotel employee in the state capital Porto Velho, which was covered by a layer of smoke as fires burned near the city.

n the occasion of Krishna Janmashtami on Saturday, Studio Big Boss and First India News organised an event, ‘Bal Gopal Pratiyogita’, where kids from across the city came together dressed as ‘Radha-Krishna’ to compete and be the one who is best-dressed. The most unique thing about this competition was that there were participants from all the religions, irrespective of Krishna Janmashtami being a Hindu festival. “’Bal Gopal Pratiyogita’ is a brand and it is really amazing to see the amount of support that it gets from the people of Jaipur. I congratulate Ashok Ji and Studio Big Boss team for the successful show, and First India will always continue to support such people-oriented initiatives,” said Jagdeesh Chandra, talking about the concept of the event, which is being executed since the past 11 years.

Devotees visit Bhagwat Bhavan Krishnas birthplace on the occasion of Krishna Janmashtami in Mathura.

Mathura: Hindu festival of Krishna Janmashtami, which falls on the eighth day or the Ashtami of the holy month of Shravana, marking the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, was celebrated with great fervour here on Saturday.

This is a festival when devotees from all over the world head to the holy city of Mathura where Lord Krishna is believed to have been born and spent his childhood days and immerse themselves in bhajans, songs and dance performances hailing the life of the Blue Lord. “Like every year we have come here along with our whole family to see Bal Gopal. From the youngest to the eldest everyone observes fast on this particular day. Ladies prepare special sweets and delicacies, but the most pivotal is bhajans and special theatrical programmes that are organised across Mathura. Not only Mathuravasis (citizens of Mathura) but you will see devotees from around the globe singing and dancing while commemorating Kanha,” said Gayatri Singh, a Krishna devotee.

In India, which is considered a

land of festivals, all festivals are celebrated with great devotion and happiness. However, Srijayanti or Gokulashtami has a special significance for the city of Mathura which is popularly known as Krishna Janmabhoomi.

“No one celebrates Janmashtami as Mathura does; after all, this is where Gopala was born. You will see people decorating their homes, visiting temples, enjoying shows and several sweets and delicacies,” said a local resident Kiran.

Worshippers celebrate by generally observing a day-long fast and thereafter breaking it at midnight, the time when Lord Krishna was born. Devotional songs, aartis, dance-drama performances and rituals like ‘bhog’ mark the auspicious day.

“We started the preparations for this auspicious occasion from a week ago but the celebration started yesterday, by observing fast and dressing up Krishna’s idol. We broke fast in the midnight with mishri (a type of sweet) and sung our favourite bhajans and aarti,” said Manoj Singh, another resident.

early morning with the beginning of Laddu Gopal’s ‘Abhishek’. The mesmerising Krishna Janmashtami celebration was witnessed by more than 2.5 lakh people throughout the day.

During the event, the on-going Heritage Fest was also concluded with the fancy dress competition of kids, where more than 400 children were seen dressed beautifully like Radha-Krishna.

During the competition, children recited Shloka, poems and dialogues of the deities.

In the evening, a cultural program ‘Krishnanjali’ was organised to make the event more

rishna Janmashtami was celebrated with traditional pomp and gaiety in the city.

‘Krishna Janmashtami’ celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu.

Many events took place in the city to mark the important occasion including dance-drama enactments of the life of Krishna according to the Bhagavata Purana (such as Rasa lila or Krishna Lila), devotional singing through the midnight when Krishna was born, fasting (upavasa), a night vigil (ratri jagaran), and a festival (mahotsava).

At Govind Devji temple, around 10 tonnes of Sagari laddus (made of milk and flour) were prepared as ‘prasad’ and distributed free to devotees. Nearly 4 lakh laddus were distributed to the devotees. cityfirst@firstindia.co.in
