Jain’s continuance sheer shamelessness, says Shah

First India Bureau

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has slammed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for continuing Jain as Delhi government min ister and termed it as “shamelessness” of Ke jriwal government. Shah also called such instanc es unprecedented in pub lic life.

“I had also gone to jail and resigned as a minis ter. Later, we fought be fore the court and the court said it was a po litical conspiracy and the case is fake. If there is injustice with you, then approach law/ court. You can't act so shamelessly,” the home minister said.

When asked about Jain receiving special treatment at Tihar, Shah suggested that it should be posed to the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aad mi Party to respond whether or not the video was genuine.

"If the video is genu ine, the accountability lies on them (AAP).

If there is injustice with you, then ap proach law/court. You can't act such shamelessly.

They have to respond that to their jailed minis ter, even after he going to jail, you don't suspend (him). And sitting in jail, he uses such facilities. I do not have to answer (to this question). Even to day he is the minister. I have never seen in such a long political life of mine that a party doesn't seek resignation of a minister even after his going to jail," he said.

When asked about provisions allowing the

Centre to remove a min ister in such a scenario, he said even the Consti tution makers had per haps not seen such things coming, and hence, there was no such provision. “They never imagined about such a public life that some body with such shame lessness would not re sign. So such a provision was left to be made by the constitution mak ers,” the home minister added.

BJP will scrap factory licences if voted to power, says Gupta

First India Bureau

New Delhi: BJP Delhi unit president Adesh Gupta on Thursday said that his party will scrap factory licences and adopt a simple online process to issue trade and health licenses if voted to power in the civic body elections.

Let them file a reply then we will see" and deferred the stay application.

"The petition and the accompanying applica tions are declined," said Justice Anu Malhotra. The judge had reserved the order on Hussain's plea on November 15.

The ED had opposed his challenge, contend ing that Hussain was part of a conspiracy to fund the riots by using the proceeds of crime.

The trial court had said in its order that prima facie Hussain conspired to engage in money laundering and the proceeds generated

Shocking to find this in ‘my India’: Visitor

New Delhi (PTI): A 22-year-old man from Bihar alleged that on Thursday his cousin was “denied entry” into the Jama Masjid, whether by herself or in a group with him and his friend. The man, who hails from Patna, said it is shocking and saddening that it is hap pening in “my India”.

“We were told outside the gate that we both men could enter, but not along with my sister. My sister, about my age, tried to enter the mosque premises alone too, but was denied en try at the gate. She feels dejected,” he said.

“We really wanted to see the Jama Masjid from inside as we like the tranquillity of this place. If the Masjid au thorities feel someone is doing anything inap propriate, then those people can be fined or asked to leave the prem ises,” he said.

“But such blanket prohibition is just wrong. We go for prayers in many mosques, no one has tried to stop us just be cause we were accom panied with a female person,” the man said.

The 22-year-old man said his cousin (sister) has in the past entered the Jama Masjid smoothly for admiring its architectural beauty and religious purposes,

New Delhi (ANI): Four members of an arms smuggling gang that called itself ‘Azad Group’ were apprehended by the Delhi Police Special Cell, officials said on Thursday. The gang leader of the group has been identified as Abhishek Bharadwaj who created a YouTube channel in the name of “Azadgroupmunger”, an Instagram Id in the name of “azadgroup011” and a Facebook profile in the name of “Azadgroupmunger”.

Delhi Police Special Cell officers said that it was from these social media platforms that Bharadwaj came in contact with other associates and included them in his gang for an arms supply racket.

All four accused were apprehended from the roadside beneath Mahipalpur Flyover “U” turn, when they came to celebrate their gang leader’s birthday. The special cell officers recovered a cache of arms and ammunition that included two semi-automatic pistols, two extra pistol maga zines, 20 live cartridges one single-shot pistol and 2 live cartridges. ‘ANTI-WOMEN, UNCONSTITUTIONAL’

New Delhi (PTI): The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Thursday termed as antiwomen and unconstitutional the ban on entry of ‘girls’ into Jama Masjid. “It's an anti-women, anti-Constitution move. The notices banning the entry of girls into Jama Masjid should immediately be withdrawn,” VHP national spokesperson Vinod Bansal demanded.

He contended that the Jama Masjid is a protected monument and comes under the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Survey of India. “Here, Muslim women are being deprived of their rights to offer namaz on the basis of their gender. The consti tutional authorities should take swift action to tighten the noose around those anti-women ele ments who were involved in banning entry of girls into the mosque,” the VHP leader said.

Women oppose: This will take us 100 years back

First India Bureau

New Delhi: Women from various fields crit icised the Jama Mas jid’s notice on banning the entry of “girls”. Many were of the opin ion that this would take women centuries back.

Ayesha Siddiqui, a professor, said, “How can we accept this? It is completely anti-women decision. It takes us 100 years back.”

Chandni Ansari, a lawyer, said, “Such a de cision is not valid in any case. This is against our constitutional rights. According to our constitution, everyone has equal rights and no

one can be stopped en tering the religious places. The decision is regressive and unac ceptable. The mosque administration should immediately take back its decision.”

Insia Kazmi, a media professional, said in stead of stopping entry there should be some guidelines for dressing and behaviour to main tain the sanctity of the place. “No one should allowed to make reli gious place a meeting point or doing improper acts,” she said.

Sahil Khan, a soft ware professional, said, “We are living in a pro gressive society and

cannot accept such dik tat. There is need to change our mindset. Youth should come for ward to oppose such rubbish decisions.”

Yogita Bhayana, a women’s rights activist, said, “This is not just regressive but shows what kind of mindset these religious groups have about girls. It is extremely unfortu nate.” Ranjana Kumari, another rights activist, said this is completely unacceptable. “What kind of 10th century mindset is this? We are a democratic country; how can they do this. How can they bar wom en?” she asked.

Mumbai (PTI): Retired Maharashtra Police of ficers on Thursday said the police in Palghar district should have taken serious cogni sance of the complaint lodged in 2020 by Shrad dha Walkar, in which she accused her live-in partner Aaftab of try ing to kill her and that she feared he would cut her into pieces.

They said that after her complaint, the local police should have re corded her statement, registered an offence against the accused and probed the matter. Some others, however, said that since Walkar had withdrawn her com plaint later, the police cannot be blamed.

Former ADGP Prem Krishan Jain said, “It was the police's duty to register an FIR and in

vestigate it according to the law.”

Walkar withdrew her complaint 20 days later, which itself indicates she was under pres sure, he said. Former Maharashtra DGP D Sivanandhan, however, said, “If the complain ant is not firm, then po lice can't do anything. There is no legal provi sion to take action if the complaint is with drawn.”

Art exhibition explores elements of spirituality

Based on artisit’s visits to monasteries in Ladakh, Ganga ghats, Kedarnath, Kanheri caves, temples of south India

New Delhi (PTI): In spired by her visits to religious places across India, an artist here has created a series of art works with elements of spirituality, evoking thoughts about “the creator”, the mysteries of the universe and the inner space.

The art exhibition, “Antarman: A journey within”, by Shruti Goenka at India Habitat Centre showcases art works based on her

visit to monasteries in Ladakh, Ganga ghats in Varanasi, Kedarnath temple, historical Bud dhist site Kanheri caves in Mumbai, and tem ples of south India.

The show is curated by Sangeeta K Murthy.

“The meaning of spirituality can be dif ferent to every human being. For some it can be an experience that creates a system of per sonal beliefs in a reli gion or god, for some it

can be just connecting with something bigger than yourself, for oth ers it can be in the form of service to humanity or connecting with na ture, art, yoga, medita tion etc”, Goenka said.

Be it the Buddha in ‘Vajradhara’ position, several forms of mind fulness and compassion through White Tara, Goenka’s subjects are depicted in her signa ture style wherein she

has used various hand mudras, lotus and lotus leaves, koi fish, water waves, ever expanding circles -- all made in vi brant colour schemes.

The artist, who be lieves that in all the

phases of life ‘karma’ is the only constant, has depicted this with a se ries of four artworks, titled ‘Karmanaye Va dhikarast’.

In fact, to bring kar ma into the picture, she has used human hands as a tool to showcase that one’s karma is in their own hands.

“Few of Shruti’s paintings focus on tra ditional forms of art. They recreate the spir itual and meditative strengths of Buddha” said the curator in a statement.

The exhibition will close on November 30.

WORLD CUP PUTS THE SPOTLIGHT ON QATAR,

BUT ALSO BRINGS ATTENTION TO ITS HUMAN RIGHTS RECORD AND POLITICS

With the start of the World Cup on November 20, 2022, soccer teams from 32 countries and tens of thousands of fans have converged on Qatar, a tiny Arab country on a pen insula in the Persian Gulf. But search “Qatar 2022” on line, and the first nonsport results are about the coun try’s human rights issues.

Like its fellow oil-rich Arab countries, Qatar has enjoyed immense wealth that nur tured grand ambitions of eco nomic growth among rulers and citizens alike. Qatar and its neighbors, including Bah rain and the United Arab Emirates, have brought in mil lions of workers from other countries to support their fastgrowing cities and businesses over the past few decades.

ple who don’t know a soccer ball from a hockey puck to understand four aspects of Qatar’s politics that relate to its human rights challenges.

1. QATAR IS RULED BY A POPULAR KING

A sparsely populated country in a desert, Qatar gained inde pendence from Great Britain in 1971. With its large oil and natural gas reserves, Qatar has the highest income per citizen in the world. Qatar’s ruler is popular among citi zens. Sheikh Tamim bin Ham ad Al Thani is part a family dynasty that has run the ar ea’s politics since the 1800s, even under Ottoman and Brit ish control. This makes Qatar one of eight Arab countries governed by hereditary kings.

I am a political scientist and legal scholar of the Middle East who has lived and worked in Qatar.

Given the sudden media focus on the country, I think it is helpful for both World Cup fans and people who don’t know a soccer ball from a hockey puck to understand four aspects of Qatar’s politics that relate to its human rights challenges

Yet genuine global concern about rights in countries like Qatar and mistrust between the Middle East and the West will persist. Can new global awareness of Qatar lead to more nuanced understanding of both cross-cultural similarities and differences between Arab Islamic countries and the rest of the world? For the moment, this is as hard to know as which country will win the World Cup

In particular, about 30,000 workers came from Bangla desh, India and Nepal to con struct the World Cup stadi ums. At least 37 died, accord ing to official Qatari counts, while building the US$220 billion infrastructure for the games.

SC IS RIGHT ON EC APPOINTMENTS

2. YES – WORKERS’ RIGHTS HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM

Doha, the capital of Qatar, has become a major media, educational, diplomatic and recreational hub over the past few decades. Its break neck development also re quired workers from all over the world. As a result, foreign workers make up about 85% of the country’s total popula tion, but they do not have the same rights as Qatari citi

The Supreme Court’s gaze is fixed on the ap pointment of Election Commis sioners and the Bench hear ing the matter is posing some probing observations regard ing lack of transparency in appointments and their short tenures. The court asked for the appointment file of EC Arun Goel to look at the mechanism that was followed and observed that “if there is no hanky panky then there is nothing to fear”. A former IAS officer of Punjab cadre Arun Goel is in line to be come the Chief Election Commissioner after the term of Rajiv Kumar ends in 2025.

The Supreme Court’s hard stance invited an equally tough response from the gov

zens. Qatari natives have been reluctant to share their extraordinary social welfare benefits, like free medical care, with millions of work ers from abroad. This makes for a system that gives many more rights to Qatari nation als than the millions of oth ers who live there.

3. YET QATAR HAS MADE MAJOR REFORMS

While workers’ rights have received appropriate West ern media attention, Qatar’s direct efforts to respond to

4. AND WESTERN CRITIQUES MAY CONCEAL OTHER AGENDAS

Qatari officials have suggest ed that international atten tion to foreign workers’ con ditions is part of a broader pattern of Westerners belit tling Arabs and Muslims. One blatant example is an October issue of the French right-wing satirical maga zine “Le Canard enchaîné,” which depicted Qatari soccer players as terrorists.

Calls in some parts of Eu rope for a widespread World Cup boycott add fuel to this and other arguments that the European and American im pression of Qatar is hypocriti cal and possibly Islamophobic. Though hardly a neutral ob server, Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, which car ries out the World Cup, reflect ed many Gulf Arabs’ views when he argued that Europe’s history of exploiting Middle Easterners and others gives it little moral high ground on is sues of non-Western rights.

Mehta told the Bench headed by Justice KM Joseph, “A pre supposition that only with the presence of judiciary in dependence and fairness will be achieved, that is an incor rect reading of the Constitu tion. Mere presence of some one from judiciary will en sure transparency is a falla cious statement.”

Barring TN Seshan no oth er CEC has shown spine to challenge the government whenever it was found want ing in sticking to norms. Be fore every election questions are raised over EC’s deci sions creating the perception that its decisions are influ enced by the government. After the Supreme Court, the poll panel is one institution whose autonomy should be sacrosanct.

THE UNRESOLVED BORDER DISPUTES BETWEEN STATES CREATE FRICTION

Border disputes be tween states keep flaring up now and then without any resolution in sight. Assam and Meghalaya were to start their second round of talks to resolve their boundary dis pute when six people were killed in firing by the Assam police. Five of those killed belonged to Meghalaya. Assam Chief Minis ter Himanta Biswa Sarma de nied the incident had anything to do with the dispute over 12 stretches of their long border. The dispute had been resolved in six of these areas in March. While these two north-east ern states avoided provocation, another flashpoint emerged be tween two BJP-ruled states of Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bom mai and his neighbouring state’s Deputy Chief Minister Deven dra Fadnavis engaged in a war of words over border dispute after some villages in Maha rashtra’s Sangli district passed a resolution to merge with Kar nataka following a water crisis. Fadnavis asserted that no vil lager was going anywhere. Bom mai found this provocative. Fes tering since 1960, when will the dispute be resolved?

A LEADER WHO IS UNBEATEN FOR 32 YEARS IS BJP’S DWARKA CANDIDATE

Dwarka (ANI): The Dwarka Assembly constituency’s seat should be considered one of the safest bets for BJP in the upcoming Gujarat assembly elections. The reason is Pabubha Manek, an MLA who has not lost a single election in the last 32 years. BJP has entrusted Manek, to win the seat for the party for the third straight time. Pabubha Manek, who has never lost an election since 1990, won the first three elections as an independent (1990, 95, 98), then joined the Congress and won the seat in 2002. Later, he won the Assembly elections of 2007, 2012 and 2017 on a BJP ticket. More people are becom ing increas ingly health conscious and choos ing healthy food options.

Millets are far more nutrient dense than wheat and rice. They are tasty and easily available. Since they are highly under-con sumed, we should make efforts to incorporate them into our daily menus in the form of rotis, bread or other food preparations.

Millets like sorghum (jowar), pearl millet (bajra), or barley have always been stereo typed as grains for the underprivi leged. They are associated with either seed given to birds or thick rotis to eat for a rural event or a dish to be had occasionally.

Fortunately, millets are gradually ac quiring impor tance. People are more and more becoming aware of the nutritional benefits of millet. Plus, seeing them on the racks of health stores has mo tivated many a per son to consume mil let more frequently.

If we were to draw a bar graph compar ing the nutrient con tent of millets and wheat or rice, the mil let bar would tower to a much greater extent. For example, the calci um content in finger millet (ragi) is nearly 350mg for 100g whereas in wheat and rice it is even below 50mg.

A few millets are eat en in the form of grains but most are pounded into flour and then used to make a range of dishes. Although add ing bran and soy flour to wheat would give it extra fibre and protein it will not increase the content of minerals and B vitamins. Nutri

NUTRITIONAL SIGNIFICANCE OF MILLETS

tionists are now advising their clients to con sume multi grain flour rotis and bread or switch to millet because of their high nutrient den sity. Due to the high

fibre content, they also aid in healthy weight loss. For example, in stead of two wheat chappatis, one can eas ily do with consuming just one bajra roti or one multi-flour chapa tti with added bran.

Nowadays a range of

bread made from mil lets and premixed flours of jowar, bajra, wheat, Bengal gram flour, and soya are also available. We just need to know their nutrient content to motivate ourselves to consume them on daily basis.

BE FLAWLESS... NOT FLOSSLESS..!

FLOSSING DAY IS CELEBRATED ON THE FOURTH FRIDAY IN NOVEMBER, WHICH IS NOVEMBER 25 THIS YEAR. THE HOLIDAY STRESSES THE IMPORTANCE OF FLOSSING YOUR TEETH EVERY DAY FOR EXCELLENT ORAL HEALTH. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT HORSEHAIR WAS USED AS DENTAL FLOSS BEFORE THE INVENTION OF THE MODERN FLOSS WE USE TODAY? CITY FIRST HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANCE OF FLOSSING AND ORAL HYGIENE!

WHY ISN’T BRUSHING ENOUGH?

The tooth has 5 surfaces, but your toothbrush can only reach 3 of them. The two untouched surfaces are very close to the sides of other teeth, making it easy for food to get trapped in between. When food gets stuck in these gaps, it creates a breeding ground for bacteria to build up, creating plaque. This is where floss comes in handy – as an interdental cleaning tool, it can get into these tight spaces and remove 80% of plaque.

Are you flossing regu larly?” is probably a question you get asked every single time you visit the dentist. And that’s be cause it’s important! Many people hate the feeling of moving a piece of floss between their teeth, and therefore leave flossing out of their daily teeth cleaning routine. But just brushing your teeth often isn’t enough to remove plaque and prevent cavities. Helping you main tain a healthy smile by protecting your teeth and gums and protecting you from other diseases, here’s why flossing needs to be a part of your daily routine.

HOW TO OBSERVE FLOSSING DAY

Commit to flossing at least once a day: Flossing is not only essential to your oral health but also your overall health. So by committing to flossing once a day, you’re committing to keeping yourself healthy. Schedule a time — 2 to 3 minutes — every day when you would floss.

Visit the dentist: If you haven’t visited the dentist in a long while, here is the perfect time to do that. Book an appointment with a dentist or check your calendar for your closest free day and make that appoint ment. Remember that your oral health is your overall health.

Educate other people about the health ben efits of flossing: Flossing Day is all about raising awareness of the importance of flossing to people’s oral health. You can con tribute to that effort by encouraging your family and friends to floss every day. Also, you can use social media to influence people within your network to start flossing.

WHY FLOSSING DAY IS IMPORTANT

Flossing keeps your teeth healthy: Accord ing to the American Dental Association (A.D.A.), employing interdental cleaners such as floss help prevent the buildup of plaque in-between the teeth. Without floss ing, the plaque buildup can lead to gum disease or cavities.

Flossing promotes overall body health: Excellent oral health means a healthy body. The mouth is the window to various parts of your body, including the heart, and when it’s not properly taken care of, it caus es several health complications.

Flossing is good for your appearance: In addition to other good oral practices, such as brushing, flossing helps ensure healthy gums, whiter teeth, and a brighter smile. You can keep the confident vibes flowing by flossing away the trapped little bits of food in your mouth that can cause a real stink. It’s true; a comprehensive oral care routine will reward you with fresh breath.

PROTECT YOUR GUMS

When you neglect flossing, plaque and bacteria can easily build up. If they are not removed properly the bacteria will eventually begin to irritate gum tissue, and this will get worse as bacteria increases. When left untreated, this can eventually cause Gingivitis – a periodontal disease that causes red and puffy gums to bleed easily.

5 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT YOUR TEETH

Teeth are not bones: Although the hu man teeth and bones are primarily made up of the same material and con tain nerves and blood, teeth do not pro duce bone marrow – unlike bones. They’re the hardest substance in the body: Contrary to popular opinion, tooth enamel is harder than bone, making it the hardest part of the body.

Teeth can’t self-repair: Because teeth are coated in enamel, which is not liv ing tissue, they cannot repair them selves once damaged.

Teeth are unique to each person: Like your tongue print and fingerprint, no one has the same set of teeth as you do. So why hesitate when you can take care of your teeth with just a few care ful steps.

A 200 lbs bite force: The bite force of an adult human is almost comparable to that of a pit bull, which is 235 lbs.

“Despite the abundant information out there on several channels and sites, many people still find gardening a strenu ous task. I found that growing veggies on PVC pipes largely solves this problem. I’ve started a pilot project of giving plants that I grow in PVC pipes to people in my lo cality. This way, they un derstand it is possible and get an initial push,” he says.

Not only were avid readers and many of the author's batch mates present at the launch, but many dignitaries also graced the occasion, and each one showed a keen interest in his work. The 500odd page action-packed thrillerlike read was unanimously regard ed as a book that was less autobi

Aisha Gupta, a 20-year-old as piring actor and a journalism student shares her in spiring journey with City First

Tell us something about yourself

I am a simple girl and I believe that an actor has is their blind faith that they are who they say they are today, in any scene. Ever since I came to know that something like acting exists, one can become an actor I wanted to be the same.

Where do you see yourself after the next 20 years?

I envision myself cheer fully training aspiring artists all over the world, assisting them in honing their acting while also teaching them the morals that my last 11 years in the corporate world taught me. Nothing above eth ics! I would like to do something great in the field of acting.

How did your jour ney begin?

Haven't done anything major but have done a few theatre plays and short films, also studied acting to understand it better. Have done diplo ma in Acting from the Gulshan Kumar Film

It's difficult to switch careers after more than a decade. Every field in cludes battles, though. The obstacles persist regardless of where your career is in its de velopment or where you are in it; we just find more effective strategies to overcome them. Though my par ents are very support ive of it they get to hear a lot of negative from my other relatives and people nearby but they ignore them and sup port me anyways.

I’m yet to achieve a lot, however, I have done many plays with Black Pearl Arts and also at TSeries Stageworks. Worked in short films and have done a lot of backstage work for the atre and tv serials.

The chief guest of the show will be Pad ma Bhushan Dr Raja Reddy and Radha Reddy and Dr Sachchidanand Joshi, Member Secretary, IGN CA. While Pad ma Shri Pratib ha Prahlada, Guru Jaikishanji, Padma Shri Rama Vaidyanathan, Pad mashri Shasswati Sen, and Vidushi Jayaprabha Menon will going to grace the event as the Guests of honour.
