New Delhi: Former finance minister Arun Jaitley was cremated at the Nigambodh Ghat here with full State honours on Sunday in the presence of relatives, top leaders from across the political spectrum and scores of his admirers and party workers.

Skies opened up as Jaitley’s son Rohan lit the pyre amid chanting of vedic hymns.

Hundreds of mourners along with netas cutting party lines had converged at the cremation ground along the banks of the Yamuna river to bid final farewell to the 66-year-old BJP stalwart.

Sawai Madhopur: A vehicle rally, being taken out on the foundation day of Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Sunday at Gangapur in Sawai Madhopur, was stoned from a religious place resulting in panic in the town.

When the pelting started, the members of the rally ran towards safety but later the two groups came head to head, however before the situation could worsen, the cops stepped in and dispersed the

clashing men. Meanwhile, additional forces have been deployed in the area while members of the VHP staged a dharna demanding arrest of the men behind the stone pelting. Due to the deteriorating atmosphere, shops in the market in the town were closed.

On Sunday, the saffron or “bhagwa” vehicle rally was being taken out in Gangapur City on Sunday under the aegis of VHP and Bajrang Dal. The administration had been alerted about

the same which had already held meetings of CLG members and the two communities regarding this. According to eyewitnesses, the rally was passing through the main market and just as the last part of the rally was

about to pass the market, few men started pelting stones. “At first the rally members rushed away to save themselves, however soon retaliated. Police officials who were escorting the rally so as no law and order situa-

tion develops, rushed and dispersed the unruly mob,” officials said.

After the incident, VHP workers staged a sit-in in the market at the fauwara chowk.

Former BJP MLA Mansingh Gurjar and the local head of Arya Samaj Madan Mohan Arya also reached to support them. During the sit-in, angry activists demanded immediate arrest of the culprits involved in stonepelting. Police was able to pacify representatives of both the society.

Nagaur: In Banjaro ki Dhani area of Nagaur, during a bid to remove encroachment, the administration’s unit involved in the removal was attacked by the encroachers resulting in death of a JCB operator.

When the family members of the deceased came to know of the incident they staged an agitation and blocked the national highway 89. Notably, there were police as well as administrative officials when the encroachment was being removed, however a group of men beat the JCB driver severely resulting in his death in the hospital.

According to officials, the administration had been gearing up for the past few days to remove encroachment of members of the gypsy community on a nearly six bigha piece of land located in Tausar Gram Panchayat. Senior administrative and police officials

the land. However when the officials reached, the members gathered and aggressively tried to stop the administration. In their aggression, they beat a JCB driver Farukh. The police later intervened and dispersed the mob.

The injured man was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment.

There seems to be a possibility of ruckus in this General Body Meeting. The rebel councillor of BJP supporting Mayor Vishnu Lata is upset with the mayor. The mayor may have to face opposition from BJP councillors as well as rebel councillors.

JMC Commissioner VP Singh had issued an order to call GBM at 11 am today. Municipal elections are proposed to be in November. Therefore it can be a municipal board meeting.

Jaipur: A matter related to flaws in NEET counselling has been reported in Jaipur. In compliance with the High Court order, the fresh mop up of NEET counselling was started in Rajasthan at SMS Medical College on Saturday, which continued for the second day on Sunday.

Testing times: Only 7 candidates selected for interview in 48 vacant posts in High Court Nizam Kantaliya Jaipur: The Rajasthan High Court has not been able to find the suitable candidates to fill the vacant posts in law and judiciary of the state.

Out of 69 posts under the ADJ Recruitment 2018, only 7 candidates have been selected for the interview for 48 vacant posts, whereas no candidate has been able to clear the examination for the 21 posts of Magistrate quota.

An examination was held for both Advocate and Magistrate quo-

tas. A total of 17 posts have been included from the backlog in advocate quota.

Moreover, the candidates who were a part of the recruitment process in 2017 were given a rebate from reapplying. A controversy had also started with the notification of ADJ Recruitment 2018.

The provision for inclusion of judicial officers in the advocate quota was opposed by advocates across the state.

As per the results issued by the High Court Examination Registrar, only 7 candidates, out

of 2,750 applicants, were able to pass the exam for 48 posts in advocate quota. At the same time, out of hundreds of applicants, not even a single candidate has been able to clear the exam from the judicial quota. Advocates believe that around three times candidates than the number of positions should be passed in the exam.

Meeting held in HC A meeting, headed by Chief Justice S Ravindra Bhatt, was held in the Rajasthan HC before issuing the result.

As per the sources, the result has been released by the examination committee after getting approval in the meeting.

Advocates oppose the result Many advocates were preparing to oppose the result. The advocates associated with the Rajasthan High Court Bar Association Jaipur have also raised questions on the results through social media.

Various bar association members said that they will discuss the matter on Monday.

Party workers remembered Jaitley as a leader who always helped them when they were in need.

“I used to go to his

house along with a party leader. He was a very decent and friendly person who hardly said no to any request for help by party workers,” said Dildar Hussain, a BJP worker from Jama Masjid area. A BJP worker from Girideeh in Jharkhan, Raj Kishore, who waited patiently outside the BJP office to pay homage to Jaitley, termed him as a “sober” politician who never hurt anyone with his words or deeds.

“His conduct and his manners were impeccable. I have heard several stories of how he helped ordinary party workers

whenever they approached him,” Kishore said.

Similar sentiments were expressed by many party leaders and workers who thronged the BJP headquarters to pay homage to the departed leader.

As the body was taken to the cremation ground in a flowerdecked gun carriage, slogans of ‘Jaitley ji amar rahein’ (long live Jaitley) rent the air.

Shah, Nadda, Singh and other leaders followed the carriage in their cars from party headquarters to the Nigambodh ghat.

“Our attitude is such that there should be no loss of human lives. If there's no telephone for 10 days, so be it. But we will roll back these measures very soon,” said Malik, who was in Delhi to attend the funeral of former Union Minister Arun Jaitley.

Thiruvananthapuram: A 33-year-old IAS officer said he has filed his papers to quit the coveted government job. While stating his reasons, Kannan Gopinathan said one of them was denial of “fundamental rights” to lakhs of people in J&K for weeks after special status was scrapped from the state earlier this month.

“In Kashmir, fundamental rights of lakhs of people have been suspended for 20 days. And many in India seem to be okay with it. This is happening in India in 2019. Article 370 or its abrogation is not the issue, but denying citizens their right to respond to it, is the main issue,” Gopinathan said.

t the request of the Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, an Arunachal Study Group has been conceptualized at the Academy to look at issues concerning the capacity building of officers of Arunachal, understand the unique potential and diversity of the state in almost every respect – language, religion, culture, agro climes, hydel, natural and renewable, flora, fauna, birds, mammals, butterflies, besides of course the challenges from the one thousand km border with China which contests the integration of the state with the Indian Union.

One will not write about this–for reams have been written on this aspect, and usually the discussion terminates with the assertion that Arunachal is indeed a state of the Indian Union, which leads the North East in many parameters of development.

The initiative about this came from Jitender Kumar, an IAS officer of the AGMUT cadre when he was attending the Phase V program at your Academy.

So, while this dispatch is not written at Charleville, it was conceptualized there! One must mention here that there’s a strong Charleville connection with the state. Six decades ago, in the year of 1959, the Academy moved from the Metcalfe House in Delhi to Mussorie, and His Holiness the Dalai Lama established the first Tibetan settlement in India after having fled to the Tawang Monastery in Arunachal (then NEFA) to avoid persecution from the Chinese who had occupied Tibet. The Tawang monastery is in the Monpa area, bordering Bhutan to the west and is a centre of Lamaistic Buddhism. The middle range of Arunachal has the Tani and Mishmi areas, while Singhpo, Naga and Yobin areas border Myanmar to the East and Nagaland

Iceland is mourning a dead 700-yr-old glacier

D

eath certificates and commemorative plaques aren’t something you’d normally associate with a glacier. But that is exactly how Iceland recently mourned the loss of 700-year-old Okjökull, the first of its major glaciers to die.

This is just one early example of events we will encounter more and more often as the hot new world we are creating slowly destroys ecosystems and livelihoods. But acknowledging the growing emotional trauma and grief felt at present and future environmental tragedies may yet be the kick we need to limit their reach.

Grief radically differs in its logic from ordinary sadness over a loss. If sadness is the response to the re-

moval of an object from the tablecloth that represents a person’s lived world, grief results from loss that tears the very fabric of that cloth. In order to repair this hole and emerge from the resulting pain and outrage, the lived world has to be reconfigured.

To grieve though, one must acknowledge the tear in that world. This can take time, and denial is a common part of the process of accepting deep loss. This may at first take the form of a temptation toward outand-out disbelief, and linger as sporadic thoughts and hopes that what was lost, wasn’t.

It may seem an irrational reaction, but it’s a completely understandable defence mechanism against life-shattering loss. The world without what’s been lost is so radically and

unimaginable, even absurd, to think of us destabilising our very climate, or the rately hoping that the science must somehow be wrong, or that so many more act as if we can still hope for the co ntinuation of our same old world, rather than the fundamental shift in the way we operate and organise that’s required.

Grief over climate breakdown and the degradation of our natural world is also notably different from grief at the death of a loved one

qualitatively different that the psyche resists accepting reality.

While much climate denial owes itself to corruption and vested interests, the avoidance of grief may explain why many decent and intelligent people are also tempted to deny the climatic breakdown humans are causing.

It is, in a certain sense,

FROM GRIEF TO ACTION It requires sustained strength and attention to gradually turn denial into acceptance and to build a new life. Actions like Iceland’s glacier funeral are a vital part of that process.

As symbols of eternity, glaciers have great cultural significance on the Nordic island. They’re also crucial for tourism and energy.

And at current rates of warming, all of the coun-

try’s glaciers will suffer Okjökull’s fate in the next 200 years, one by one. For Icelanders, emotionally acknowledging this can galvanise the associated grief into action.

The G7 gathering is taking place against a backdrop of growing worries about a global economic downturn and coincides with an era of international disunity across an array of issues that have strained decades-old allegiances.

Basel: Two-time silver medallist PV Sindhu was left speechless after her agonising wait for the elusive gold finally ended with a maiden World Championship title here on Sunday.

Sindhu became the first Indian to win World Championships gold by thrashing familiar rival Nozomi Okuhara of Japan 21-7 21-7 in one of the most lop-sided finals ever.

Two years after being robbed of the gold

by Okuhara in an epic 110-minute final that went down as one of the greatest battles in badminton history, Sindhu finally exorcised the ghost of that heart-wrenching loss with a dominating win over the same opponent.

“I am really very happy. I have waited for this victory and finally I have become a world champion,”

Sindhu told reporters.

“Last time, it was silver, before that it was silver and finally I am a world champion so I am really really happy. I have been expecting this for a very long time. So I got it finally and I want to enjoy it, feel it.”

It was Sindhu’s fifth World Championships medal -- most by a female singles player alongside former Olympic and world champion Zhang Ning of China -- to go with the two successive silvers and a couple of bronze medals.

Sindhu has also won an Olympic silver in 2016 Rio Games, a silver at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, an Asian Games silver at Jakarta and the BWF World Tour Finals last year.

North Sound: Technique is “overrated” for KL Rahul but the India opener has admitted he needs to show some patience to enure the runs flow again from the willow that promised much.

Apart from a halfcentury in the one-off Test against Afghanistan and the 149 in England last year, Rahul has not quite set the stage ablaze in the longest format since the start of 2018.
