POLICY RATES UNCHANGED, VOTES MONETARY POLICY PANEL The monetary policy committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) kept policy rates unchanged, and the governor assured that the worst was possibly over for the economy and it can now hope for steady recovery towards pre-pandemic growth rates. The newlyappointed six member MPC voted unanimously to keep the policy repo rate at 4 per cent, and said the real gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate in 2020-21 could be a negative 9.5 per cent, with “risks tilted to the downside.”

Kailash Meena, the main accused in the case, was arrested while a search is underway for the remaining persons, officials added.

Baran: A bear was killed after it was hit by a vehicle on National Highway 27 in Shahabad Valley area of Baran district early on Friday. The forest department team that reached the spot said that the condition of the animals hinted that it must have collided with a large vehicle. In the past also, many wild animals have died in the same way but fencing has not been done in the area by the highway authority despite frequent accidents.

The Shahabad region is densely forested and is home to many wild animals including panthers.

Even India doesn’t. Only 17 countries in the world recognise Taiwan. Even the UNO does not recognise the Republic of China which was a signatory to its formation. Yet the USA is the biggest arms supplier to Taiwan, it’s 11th largest trading partner and avowed guarantor of its sovereignty

n an unprecedented move Chinese embassy in New Delhi has issued a series of directives to Indian media and media houses regarding coverage of impending National Day of Taiwan on 10th October. Press release issued by the Press Section of the embassy which appears to be more of a diktat to Indian media about reporting of the National Day of Taiwan says, “We will like to remind our media friends that there is only one China in the world, and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China. Taiwan is inalienable part of China’s territory.” It further threatens the media, “Taiwan shall not be referred to as a ‘country’ (‘nation’) or “The Republic of China” or the leader of China’s Taiwan region as “President”, so as not to send wrong signals to the general public.”

No such advisory was issued by the Embassy in 2019.

However, after the event, it issued a statement on “Misreporting by Indian Media on Taiwan” seriously objecting to and expressing strong dissatisfaction at some of the Indian media referring to Taiwan as a “country”. “Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. It is an objective fact and a universally recognized norm governing international relations” emphasized the Chinese envoy.

What is so different this year that the embassy has preempted and issued a virtual threat to the Indian media?

China is preparing for the celebration of the hundredth year of formation of the Communist Party of China (CCP) under the watchful eye of allpowerful Xi Jinping. The current behaviour of the Chinese diplomatic staff is the manifestation of its “Wolf Warrior” diplomacy. Xi wants China not only to be powerful but assertive as well. It is also an application of China’s “3 W Strategy” which includes media warfare. Xi desires that CCP should not only control selected foreign media but also be able to manipulate it to

further its ideology and portray its Comprehensive National Power (CNP).

Xi has offered to resolve the matter on the pattern of Hong Kong by advocating “One Nation, Two Systems” model which has been rejected by the island nation.

Dwelling into history, the dispute is a legacy of Mao led the Chinese civil war. The island formally became a Chinese province only in 1887. But China’s faltering Qing impe-

rial government was forced to cede it to Japan in 1895 after a brief war. Japan ran Taiwan as a colony until 1945, when it was effectively handed over to Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist (KMT) government in China.

In 1949 Mao Zedong’s forces won the Chinese civil war and the KMT fled to the island, ruling it under martial law until democratizing in The 1980s, while the Communists controlled China. It continues to remain a dispute to date since no peace treaty has ever been signed.

However, China’s official position on Taiwan is unambiguous. It claims that Taiwan is, was, and always has been an inseparable part of China and that international law support China’s claim.

This is grilled into every mainland Chinese child’s mind as part of the CCP’s ideology campaign with no second thought on the issue and no public discussion of alternate views is permitted.

CCP wants outright reunification, the sooner the better, seeing the recovery of the island as the final chapter in the

civil war and end of past humiliations when China was forced to cede territory to foreigners. Xi has succeeded in reasserting party control over the society, which had loosened during the era of his immediate predecessors who believed in “collective leadership.” His clarion call to the nation after assuming its control was “Don’t forget the original intention. Stick to the mission”. With multifarious threats challenging him the slogan has become more relevant in the present days and is emerging as a battle cry for unity and perseverance. With increasing US interference in Taiwan and the non-reconciliatory approach of its newly elected hardliner President Iron lady Tsai Ing-wen, China is becoming increasingly sensitive and restive about Taiwan. On the other hand, Taiwan is becoming more assertive and confident. During the ongoing pandemic, the Taiwanese were denied entry in various countries believing them to be Chinese since their passport is of the Republic of China. The Taiwanese govern-

ment has therefore decided to change the cover of their passports to read “Taiwan Passport” while retaining the Republic of China in Mandarin.

It has its own currency New Taiwan dollar controlled by the central bank of the Republic of China. It is increasingly stamping Taiwanese made goods as ‘Made in Taiwan’, all this is not going well with the CCP which is increasingly threatening to punish errant island nation. China is also worried and annoyed with the fact that more and more nations are speaking up for Taiwan and are reluctant to back down under Chinese pressure.

Xi is being labelled as a revisionist and expansionist and the world is getting united to counter China’s expansionist designs under the banner of democratic forces and supporting the Taiwanese cause. There are growing voices in India for recognition of Taiwan though that may not be easy due to prevailing agreements and treaties with PRC. However, a change in intent and desire to strengthen relations between the two countries has been signalled by the present regime by deputing two of its senior party leaders to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new President.

uman attention is a scarce, yet commercially valuable resource today, and social media competes for access to it. The wealth of digital connectivity and advances in browsing and filtering gives internet users more options and increases their perceived control over cyberspace.

However, this is only a part of the whole truth.

Tech companies often enjoy exclusive access to data characterizing online behavior, which is then processed to filter preferences and customize content. Such personalization can save us hours of searching, for instance by presenting us with news in our geographical area and

matching previous browsing. However, it can also be used to promote certain content, such as advertising and potential agendas, that prevents us from seeing the big picture.

SOCIAL OBESITY Many social media platforms combine their intelligent algorithms with influence elements, borrowed from games and psychology, to grab our attention and persuade us to stay active online. In addictive domains such as gambling, total immersion and losing any sense of realworld time and space are common. Indeed, casinos do not have clocks or windows. This is not far from software like TikTok, where each spin will pre-

sent you with unpredictable, concentrated content.

The immersive design and uncertainty combined with social proof: For instance, how many people liked and commented on a sketch are all carefully designed influence elements.

The one difference with gambling is probably the lack of warning measures and limit-setting. Taken together, all of the above can

and should make us seriously question whether we are indeed as free and conscious of our own online choices as we think we are.

Human beings are social creatures, and we tend to be influenced by the opinions and actions of others. We seek to belong to groups and are curious to understand how others perceive us. It helps us to learn and shapes our behavior and

decisions. At the same time, we desire autonomy, independence and distinctiveness. While it is natural that social media is designed to host that social interaction, its density, continuity and novel means are different in nature and scale. In a connected online world, it is always possible to socialize, and this arguably leads to “social obesity,” leaving us with little time for self-reflection.

The continuous nature of online social spaces may also trigger negative experiences such as the “fear of missing out” (FOMO) and lead to frequent checking of social media and seeking validation. FOMO leads to distraction, cognitive overload and other risks such as accessing so-

cial media during a lecture or even while driving.

Some claim to be able to multitask, but this can, in many cases, just be denial, which is one symptom of behavioral addiction.

COUNTERMEASURES By accepting that observation, we need effective countermeasures and policies to increase the conscious and informed nature of our digital consumption but, until now, these protective resources remain lacking. Education about the persuasive and addictive design elements of these spaces and techniques to combat them would be potentially helpful to build resilience to temptation and unconscious usage.

Taiwan’s location and economy are critical to China in its pursuance of becoming the ‘numero uno’ world power. If Taiwan becomes integral to China, as desired by the later it would become a Pacific Power, strengthen its position in the South China Sea and be in a position to threaten vital US interests in the Pacific, have the leverage to cut off oil supplies to Japan and South Korea, important US allies in the region. Economically, it would have control over the world’s major cutting-edge technologies. All this explains China’s sensitivities viz a viz Taiwan and its allergy to other nations calling it a “country” rather than Taiwan region of People’s Republic of China. The USA on the other hand does not want to take any chance in the security of the island-nation that may help China to fulfill its mission. Stepped-up US support for Taiwan has angered China which has often cautioned USA that the same amounts to US support for Taiwan Independence which is an anathema to China and China may forcibly occupy the island by launching military operations across the strait.

With India and China on the verge of war in Eastern Ladakh and heightened antiChina sentiments across the country, the Chinese are apprehensive of the Indian media giving prominence to Taiwan on its National Day. It is to pre-empt the same and gauge India’s concerns to its sensitivities that the advisory has been issued by the Chinese Embassy.

Cases in India dip below 9 lakh mark New Delhi: For the first time after a month, the total number of active COVID-19 cases in India dipped below the 9 lakh mark with 8.93 active cases reported on Thursday, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed.

The last time the number of active cases was reported below 9 lakh was September 9 with 8.97 lakh cases.

The number of active cases in the country now stands at 8,93,592, about 12.94 per cent of the total active cases, according to the Ministry.

The total number of recoveries stands at 59,06,069, taking the gap between recovered cases and active cases to 50,12,477.

The recovery rate further improved to 85.52 per cent with 78,365 recoveries and discharges reported in the last 24 hours. The total number of recoveries has been exceeding the number of new active cases (70,496) for three consecutive weeks.

New Delhi: A report prepared by the National Control for Disease Control (NCDC) has cautioned that the national Capital needs to gear up to tackle the surge of 15,000 COVID-19 cases per day in upcoming winters and festivals. The report has highlighted three reasons to worry that may cause excessive pressure on healthcare

services. (i) winter months that make respiratory illnesses severer; (ii) patients may come from outside Delhi in large numbers; (iii) patients coming from distant areas are likely to be more serious. The report has been drafted by the NCDC under the supervision of Dr VK Paul, Chairman of NITI Aayog Member (Health).

Kerala’s Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple to remain closed till Oct 15 Thiruvananthapuram : The Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram has been closed for devotees till October 15, after several temple staff including two priests tested positive for COVID-19.

According to the temple authorities, daily poojas will be held by Tantris but devotees will not be allowed in-

side the temple till October 15. “35 persons will be allowed inside

the temple at a time and a total number of devotees will be restricted to 665 in a day,” the authorities said previously when the temple was reopened for visitors from August 27.

But after several staff members tested positive for COVID-19, the temple authority had decided to close the temple for a few more days. —ANI

NIA files chargesheet against eight people Mumbai: The NIA on Friday filed a chargesheet against eight people, including activists Gautam Navlakha and 82-year-old Father Stan Swamy, for their alleged involvement in inciting a mob to violence in Bhima Koregaon near Pune on January 1, 2018, officials said.

Swamy, who said he has never been to Bhima Koregaon, was arrested from his home in Ranchi on Thursday evening and brought to Mumbai where he was produced before a court on Friday and remanded to judicial custody till October 23. NIA spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General of Police in the agency Sonia Narang said the charge-sheet was submitted before a designated court here.

Ranchi (Jharkhand) : Former Bihar CM Lalu Prasad Yadav was on Friday granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court in connection with the Chaibasa Treasury case related to the fodder scam.

However, Yadav will remain in jail since Dumka treasury case is still pending. Yadav was earlier shifted to the residence of the director of the RIMS hospital, where he had been admitted for months owing to poor health, to prevent exposure to the COVID-19 virus.

Britain’s ‘Belmond British Pullman’ tops the list of top-10 luxury trains across the world, followed by Rajasthan’s PoW. While the Belmond British Pullman scored 96.95, PoW scored 96.89. Maharaja Express of IRCTC stands at 8th position.

PoW was started in 1982 when the wooden saloon of erstwhile royals was put togeth-

er on tracks. Initially, it was on the meter gauge line and later converted to the broad gauge line. In the last four-five years, the fame of the Palace on Wheels has increased greatly in the country and foreign and several tourists have repeated their journey in the luxury train which reflects its popularity

and liking.
