Jaipur: In the first phase of elections for Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti members in 21 districts of the state a total of 61.80 percent of voters exercised their franchise on Monday. The highest turnout was in Mohangarh panchayat Samiti in the Jaisalmer district, where 78.53 percent of voters cast their votes, said State election commissioner PS Mehra.

Mehra said the elections were conducted with strict compliance of Covid guidelines issued by the Center, State, Medical, Local Administration, and State Election Commission. He said that the former BJP government had notified several recruitment exams but Ashok Gehlot led Congress government had cancelled them and betrayed the youths.

Saraf said that the government has cancelled recruitment on nearly 35000 vacancies in various departments and kept candidates in dark.

He said that there is a provision for free travel for teachers, who have been honoured at the state level, in the general category of buses,

and now the decision has been taken to make the facility available for honoured ministerial employees also.

Similarly, he said, another decision was taken to give the facility of free travel to disabled patients of leprosy and one attendant.

Khachariyawas informed that the roadways have provided free travel facility to specially-abled people in the past and a 75 percent concession in fare to leprosy patients but now the decision has been taken to extend free travel facility to leprosy patients who are disabled and one attendant.

Jaipur: The Vishwakarma police raided on Monday a factory making fake ghee and seized seven tins of sake ghee marked as Saras brand.

The police said that the raid was conducted on the Anil Trading Company and detained Anil Aggarwal after receiving information that fake ghee manufacturing was going at Manu Vihar colony of Vishwakarma.

The police also seized fake ghee from Krishna and Mann company. The police said that the fake ghee was being made from refined oil and chemicals. First India Bureau Jaipur: Health minister Dr Raghu Sharma took a round of the Rajasthan University of Health Sciences hospital in Pratap Nagar and interacted with corona patients admitted there. Sharma was admitted to the hospital on Monday after his corona report tested positive. He also inspected the health facilities in the hospital.

In a statement released later, Sharma said that more than 3000 cases are coming daily in the state. “This is the second peak of Corona. The only and only ‘caution’ is to avoid this pandemic,” he said.

Of the fresh cases, 599 were reported in Jaipur, 435 in Jodhpur, 276 in Alwar, 275 in Kota, 187 in Ajmer, 182 in Bikaner, 160 in Bhilwara, 134 in Nagaur and 102 in Sriganganagar besides cases in other districts of the state.

33 flights arrived and took off from JIA on Monday with Indigo operating the maximum 16 of these flights while SpiceJet, Air Asia, Air India and Go Air shared 6,3,5 and 3 flights re-

spectively. Indigo added a new flight 6E-9911 to Aurangabad on Monday.

This becomes important in the light of the fact that after the flight operations resumed on 25 May, JIA could only manage a paltry 8 flights in a day. The number

started picking up from August and touched 33 on Monday. Earlier 32 flights were operated on 12 November. JIA has an average of 28 flights and around 5500 passengers daily but 22 November registered 8647 passengers.

CORONAVIRUS CASES CAUSE CONCERN, SC PULLS UP STATES

midst increasing expectations of the early availability of a Covid vaccine, there is renewed concern over the resurgence of coronavirus cases in India in the month of November. With over 44,000 new cases the caseload on Monday crossed the 91 lakh mark. Of the total 1, 33, 738 deaths, Maharashtra alone accounted for 46,623. It was followed

by Karnataka (11,654), Tamil Nadu (11,605), Delhi (8391). Gujarat recorded 3859 deaths.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will discuss the situation with eight states through a virtual conference.

The rapidly deteriorating Covid-19 situation drew the attention of the Supreme Court which pulled up the governments of Delhi and Gujarat where the situation is going out of control and directed them to file affidavits in three days giving details of the steps they have taken and intend to take and the help they require from the Central government.

Similar directions were issued to Maharashtra and Assam governments. A bench headed

by Justice Ashok Bhushan was especially harsh on Gujarat for allowing weddings and gatherings at a time when Covid-19 cases were rising and the situation was “going out of control”. The situation in Gujarat was worse after Delhi and Maharashtra.

About Delhi, the court said that things have worsened, particularly in November as it asked the state to file the affidavit. To Maharashtra’s lawyer, the court said, “There is a spike in cases and this is only November.

Prepare for the worst in December. You have to take steps.”

The situation is all the more worrisome because the vaccine is yet to arrive. Among the vaccine candidates in the race, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said that India’s Covaxin started its third stage trial this month boosting hope of an early rollout of “the most advanced Indian experimental vaccine”. The Health Minister also reiterated the government’s plan to immunize over 200 million Indians by July, though the age group of patients to be administered the vaccine first has not yet been decided.

Apart from Covaxin, the other vaccine candidates in the fray and nearing the final round of tests include those from Moderna, Pfizer, Sputnik V, Covishield, and OxfordAstraZeneca. Pfizer and Moderna claim over 90 percent efficacy. Russia is confident of Sputnik’s success while the Oxford vaccine’s efficacy is also said to be 90 percent. These vaccines will have to share their data for scientific approval. There are still a few months to go before one can hope to get the vaccine shield against Covid-19.

The people, however, think that the vaccine is here already as they disdainfully flout the Covid protocols forcing governments to enforce them and penalise those violating them.

Such people end up adding to the case load.

Patience is tested in various other ways. Many ask themselves, “How long?” Perhaps, we have to deal with some form of injustice at the workplace or at home or just the pressures of life. Sometimes lack of punctuality or wrong attitudes of those around, wear us out.

These and other everyday situations make us tense and our patience is sorely tried.

Patience conveys the thought of waiting calmly for something or manifesting forbearance under provocation or strain. A person with patience waits for a purpose, without giving up hope. Such a person remains composed, does not become irritable or act rashly.

Persistent impatience weakens the bonds of friendship, whereas patience strengthens them. It enables us not to overreact and helps us to bear under difficult circumstances while maintaining a positive

attitude. Patience, in a moment of anger, will spare us a hundred days of anguish. It improves the character and enhances one’s personality. It coats other fine qualities with a varnish of permanence.

However, dealing with people who are unreasonable or slow to understand can be vexing for us. Knowing that their habits are disagreeable, not the person, we can focus on what they can do. Making such allowances will help us to be patient.

Patience does not mean being weak, careless, inattentive, or indecisive. Nor it is passively waiting for the right time for something to happen. Rather, we can keep ourselves occupied and develop the necessary skills.

Brooding over disappointments can make us bitter. It is helpful to keep a hopeful attitude.

Greenland is melting and everyone should be worried

reenland is the largest island in the world and on it rests the largest ice mass in the Northern Hemisphere. If all that ice melted, the sea would rise by more than seven metres.

But that is not going to happen, is it? Well not any time soon, but understanding how much of the ice sheet might melt over the coming century is a critical and urgent question that scientists are trying to tackle using sophisticated numerical models of how the ice sheet interacts with the rest of the climate system. The problem is that the models are not that good at reproducing recent observations and are limited by our poor knowledge of the detailed topography of the subglacial terrain and fjords, which the ice flows over and into.

One way around this problem is to see how the ice sheet responded to changes in climate in the past and compare that with model projections for the future for similar changes in temperature. That is exactly what colleagues and I did in a new study now published in the journal Nature Communications.

We looked at the three largest glaciers in Greenland and used historical aerial photographs combined with measurements scientists had taken directly over the years, to reconstruct how the volume of these glaciers had changed over the period 1880 to 2012.

The approach is founded on the idea that the past can help inform the future, not just in science but in all aspects of life. But just like other “classes” of history, the climate and the Earth system in future will not be

melting from those three Greenland glaciers.

Nonetheless, if we figure out exactly how sensitive the ice sheet has been to temperature changes over the past century, that can provide a useful guide to

how it will respond over the next century.

We found that the three largest glaciers were responsible for 8.1mm of sealevel rise, about 15% of the whole ice sheet’s contribu-

tion. Over the period of our study the sea globally has risen by around 20 cm, about the height of an A5 booklet, and of that, about a finger’s width is entirely thanks to ice

In 2013, a modelling study by Faezeh Nick and colleagues also looked at the same “big three” glaciers (Jakobshavn Isbrae in the west of the island and Helheim and Kangerlussuaq in the east) and projected how they would respond in different future climate scenarios. The most extreme of these scenarios is called RCP8.5 and assumes that economic growth will continue unabated through the 21st century, resulting in global mean warming of about 3.7 degrees Celsius above today’s temperatures (about 4.8 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial or since 1850).

Having too many things to do, too many places to be at, and too many people to stay in touch with can lead to impatience.

Accepting reality makes us patient since things do not always happen as fast as we wish.

Recognizing the fact that time moves at the speed of time and not at the speed of our expectations can keep us tranquil and accept delay with peace of mind.

By observing and associating with those who display patience, we can be motivated to keep our balance. By eliminating time wasters, we will not be too busy to be patient.

So let us ‘slow down and smell the roses.’ Make time to live every moment of life. Work at letting patience take root in us. We will win good friends, make better decisions and have better health.
