HAPPY BIRTHDAY 72 MR CM!

Politics changes with each passing year and with that the ‘Kathni-Karni’ of self proclaimed ‘leaders’ changes as well. Thus, the people start loosing their faith and trust in such politicians. However, there seldom comes a leader whose politics influences not just the party but an entire region, whose reach is far beyond his own territory, into the hearts of the people of far away regions too and such a leader can only come when one is genuinely an altruistic person.

Such leaders are those who stand the test of time, the penultimate measure of a leader’s sincerity and commitment to people. And one such leader is Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who, through his sheer will and grit, has not only become a national leader of

Congress party, but also a leader who brings about various sections together and whose policies and schemes provide a soothing balm to each and every human.

Today, marks the 72nd year in the life of ‘Marawar’s Gandhi’ Ashok Gehlot, who, it appears, is going to create history by becoming a four-time CM of the desert State!

In fact, Gehlot’s recent experiment of organising ‘Mehangai Rahat Camp’ at grassroot level may prove a game changer in his entire ‘comeback exercise’.

But reaching this milestone was never easy. A leader has to go through several ups and downs in his life as politician and yet continue on the desired path, without being perturbed by the downs or lows of the political sphere.

Starting from his college days, CM Ashok Gehlot has effectively spent 50 years in public life, a no minor feat.

As the 3-time Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Gehlot has presented a popular Budget to every class and revolutionary announcements were made in the budget. He implemented many schemes in the State among which OPS is one of the most powerful plan, which, ironically, has been followed upon by the BJP government as well! Wherever elections are held, this scheme is included in the Congress manifesto and in the upcoming Karnataka polls too, the BJP government has formed a committee for this scheme.

The ‘simplistic leader’ that Gehlot is, he always celebrates his birthday in a muted tone and this time he has chosen to celebrate with the tribals of Rajasthan from Udaipur division.

But the underlying question remains. Why does he take such pains for them? Not because he is representing a political party, not merely because he holds a constitutional office and definitely not because he wants to earn and make a name for himself; but because there is an underlying zeal for the betterment of the state and to such a large-hearted individual and ‘leader’ of the State, First India says, “Happy Birthday Mr CM!”

NOW, BRIJ’S TUKDE GANG SHOCKER; PT USHA

ON MAT OVER ‘TARNISH IMAGE’ COMMENT

I WOULD RESIGN IF PARTY ASKS ME TO..., SAYS

BRIJ BHUSHAN

WFI president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has been accused by female wrestlers of sexual harassment, on Monday said that he would resign ‘if his party asked him to’. “If my party asks me to resign, I will resign...Forces involved in ‘Tukde Tukde gang’, Shaheen Bagh, ‘Kisaan Andolan’ seem to be involved in it (Wrestlers’ protest), I am not their target, party (BJP ) is their target, these athletes are paid. Protest is expanding like Shaheen Bagh, they want to divide UP and Haryana”, Singh told. Earlier in the day, Brij Bhushan had said that all activity in the sport had come to a standstill in the last four months due to protests by the country’s top wrestlers.

Nitin Gadkari

Even as in an Instagram video, Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Bajrang Punia had accused the Delhi Police of cutting electricity and ration supplies at the wrestlers protest at Jantar Mantar, the Delhi Police filed two FIRs against Brijbhushan on Friday – one pertained to allegations of a minor wrestler and was registered under the POCSO Act, and the second on the complaints of the women wrestlers. The wrestlers have, however, promised to keep their protests on until he is either sent to jail or the investigation is completed, leaving the endgame of this stir uncertain. The next court hearing will be on May 5.

Earlier, speaking to his followers, Punia claimed that the Delhi Police have cut off electricity, barricaded the protest site and isn’t allowing food and water and have asked the wrestlers to end their protest after Delhi Police registered two FIRs against Wrestling Federation of India president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has been accused of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation by seven women wrestlers. However, it was heart-wrenching to see how legendary PT Usha had “reacted” or how some of the top names in the country’s sports fraternity who actually matter, chose to remain silent even when the women wrestlers were protesting for the second time in Delhi this year, reiterating their allegations of

In February and March 2022, we conducted a transplantation project along the Sant Tukaram Maharaj Palkhi Marg, Maharashtra located on the Baramati-Indapur section of NH 965G. During this project, we successfully transplanted 1,025 Banyan trees to the edge of the Right of Way (ROW).

Currently, 870 of the transplanted trees (85%) have survived.

sexual harassment and intimidation by WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

PT Usha, who is also a Rajya Sabha MP, on Thursday came down heavily on the wrestlers who had resumed their protest. In a statement, PT Usha had said the wrestlers’ protest on the streets is “tarnishing” India’s image. She said the protest by the elite wrestlers equates to “indiscipline”.

“Wrestlers staging protests on streets amounts to indiscipline. Wrestlers’ protest on streets is tarnishing the image of India,” PT Usha said after the IOA’s Executive Committee meeting.

It may be recalled that in February this year, Legendary athlete and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president P T Usha broke down before the media alleging that illegal constructions were being carried out at her academy campus in Kozhikode district and strangers were trespassing into the property posing a security threat to the inmates.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, she said those at the Usha School of Athletics had been facing such harassment and security issues for some time and it has intensified after she became the Rajya Sabha Member.

Notwithstanding the fact that the sprint-queen may have felt extremely bad on that day after having brought so many laurels for the country, her comments on the protesting wrestlers against alleged sexual harassment had sent shock ripples across the nation. People across walks of life were shocked to see how a former Olympian could make such a statement?

But on Friday, the protesting women wrestlers found good support from Olympic gold medallist

Bhupender Yadav @byadavbjp

Neeraj Chopra and called for “quick action” from the authorities in order to ensure that justice is served. Taking to Twitter, Chopra called the issue, “sensitive”. He went on to say, “It hurts me to see our athletes on the streets demanding justice. They have worked hard to represent our great nation and make us proud. As a nation, we are responsible for safeguarding the integrity and dignity of every individual, athlete or not. What’s happening should never happen.”

SANIA SUPPORT A BOOST

Also, ace tennis player Sania Mirza backed the wrestlers’ protest. “As an athlete but more as a woman this is too difficult to watch… They’ve brought laurels to our country and we have all celebrated them ... if you have done that then it’s time to now stand with them in this difficult time too... This is a highly sensitive matter and serious allegations. I hope whatever the truth is justice is served… sooner rather than later,” she urged. But till the time this article was written, the biggies of Indian cricket like Sachin Ten dulkar, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had not mentioned a word to boost the morale of the pro testing women wrestlers.

It may be recalled that Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Anil Kumble, Suresh Raina were some of the renowned names from the Indian cricket fraternity who tweeted on farmers’ protest and hence the entire country expect ed top cricketers to stand with the protesting women wrestlers especially when the matter is a very sensitive one.

THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL

The outcome of the first GST should seek to convey a message on sustainable lifestyles as well as sustainable consumption to inform the next round of NDCs and enhanced international cooperation.

AFTER JANUARY, WHY DID THE WRESTLERS RESUME THE DEMONSTRATION IN APRIL?

The protesting wrestlers have cited delay from the government in releasing the report of the committee that looked into the allegations (of sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan), loss of faith in the committee, and the absence of action against Brij Bhushan, of which they had been assured in January. The protesting women wrestlers have also expressed unhappiness over the fact that the WFI had resumed its activities in spite of the ongoing probe, and have alleged that Brij Bhushan was still actively calling the shots, evidenced by the fact that the first national tournament since the controversy broke took place in his backyard in Gonda.

WHO IS BRIJ BHUSHAN?

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, has been a six-time MP, having won the Gonda Lok Sabha seat in 1991 and 1999, Balrampur in 2004, and Kaiserganj in 2009, 2014, and 2019. He was a candidate of the BJP in all these elections except in 2009, when he won on an SP ticket. Hailing from Gonda, Brij, 66, according to his 2019 election affidavit, was named in the Babri Masjid demolition case. He has been involved with wrestling in several administrative roles — as president of WFI, vice-president of Asian Wrestling Federation, a member of the government’s Mission Olympic Cell.

WHAT ARE THE ACCUSATIONS?

The wrestlers have alleged financial mismanagement and arbitrariness in the functioning of the WFI. But the gravest allegation has been that of sexual harassment. The complainants have cited incidents that took place as early as in 2012 to as recently as in 2022, and claimed some of them occurred at Brij Bhushan’s official MP’s bungalow in the national Capital and during tournaments in India and abroad. One of the complainants, it was mentioned in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, is a minor.

WHAT ARE THE DEMANDS?

hey want him to be arrested under the POCSO Act as one of the complainants is a minor. In January, the govt persuaded the protesting wrestlers to call off their protest by forming an Committee, which was tasked with looking into the allegations. The six-member panel led by Mary Kom, was given four weeks to come up with its findings. However, it submitted its report only in the first week of April. Govt declared ongoing process for WFI polls, scheduled for May 7 as null and void, instructed IOA to form an ad hoc committee that would conduct polls in 45 days, and also manage WFI’s day-to-day affairs until new members take charge.

schemes will be enforced in a much better way in Karnataka because this state is economically stronger than Rajasthan. So the people also know this. And the current BJP government, that, I believe, is the most corrupt government that has come to power after Independ-

This is now on every person’s tongue and thus our schemes will be beneficial to the people and the Congress will form government.

that?

I have always been going among people. I celebrated Diwali among Saharia tribals in Baran last time I was CM. So when I get a chance I go so this is nothing new for me. Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Nyay scheme’ wherein people would have been provided Rs 6,000 per month, we have asked him to bring that in a law and pass it. Every needy person has the right to live, and to raise a family. That is why I think that the social security is such a thing. We are giving pension to one crore

people. Some states are giving it less, some are giving more money in it. My thought is that everyone in India should get Nyay. We brought Right to Health and PM Modi could take a step in this direction since there is immense poverty in the nation. people’s financial status is extremely bad and treatment costs have sky-rocketed, the medicines have become expensive and PM should address this issue.

l You said that assembly elections should be contested on local issues. But BJP is polarising the situation. What would you like to say about that? See the local issues are of good governance. They (BJP) do not have

ENHANCING SKILLS

that neither in Karnataka or in other states where BJP is in power or in Centre. Why should we go on the issues they are creating. We will follow what we are focussing on. We will make the public trust us that ultimately our thought is for your betterment and for the development of the state and so you should cast vote keeping that aspect in mind.

l You have claimed that Congress is winning in Karnataka. Do you think this will be a revival for Congress and specially in the general elections, it will have an effect?

Definitely. If we win here then there will be effect on states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and other states. And a

message will go in the nation that it is in public interest that Congress wins. If we win here then it will teach a lesson to BJP. They will hold a post-mortem for the loss they incur and perhaps they may bring about a positive change and the nation will get benefit of that. That is why, I think the people should vote for Congress.

l So will this be a game changer in Rajasthan?

Like I said, there is an immense chance of the government getting repeated in Rajasthan. Wherever I have gone, I have seen this. But specially this time among the youth, in conjunction with the elderly and all sections. There is extraordinary enthusiasm in the public. (FROM P1)

Can

form in a circle?

Rainbows form when sunlight from behind you hits millions of tiny round water droplets in front of you and bounces back to your eyes.

As a sunbeam hits a droplet at an angle, it bends into the water and separates out into a spectrum of colors. Scientists call the bending of light “refracting.” The colors separate because each “color” of light travels with a different speed in water, or, for that matter, any transparent material that light can travel through, like glass in a prism.

When the colors hit the back wall of the water droplet, the angle is now too shallow for them to bend out into the air, so they reflect back into the water droplet and return to its entrance wall. From there, the colors can bend out again into air and reach your eye.

As you look at these droplets, the different colors happen to bunch up at a slightly different angles, and each color forms the circular rim of

FACEOFTHEDAY

a cone with your eye at the tip of the cone. And, voila, you have your own personal rainbow.

The droplets that send the colors to your eye cannot send them to anyone else, so even though everyone near you sees the same rainbow at a distance, each person really sees their own slightly different rainbow. It’s all in the eye of the beholder.

For rainbows to form, the shape of the water droplets has to be very close to a sphere for all of them to bend and reflect the colors in harmony. This happens for very small droplets, such as a fine mist, or just after a rain shower when the air is just moist. As the droplets get larger, gravity distorts their shape and the rainbow vanishes.

A rainbow is not physically present where it appears to be, similar to your image in a mirror.

So, I’m sorry to say that you can never actually reach your rainbow.

And, alas, nobody can ever find that pot of gold. But you can create your own rainbow.

One experiment you can try in summer is to turn on a sprinkler hose using the “mist” setting. Remember to have the sun behind you. If you create a fine mist screen in front of you and look at your shadow, you might see a rainbow.

It is not difficult to see colors, but to see a full circle, you will need some patience and practice, just like scientists. So next time you are on an airplane, grab the window seat. If you are flying a

YOUR DAY

ARIES

MAR 21 - APR 20

The legend goes that there is a pot of gold hidden at the end of every rainbow. But is there really an “end” to a rainbow, and can we ever get to it?

Most us go through life seeing rainbows only as arches of color in the sky, but that’s only half of what is really a circle of color.

Normally, when you look at a rainbow, the Earth’s horizon in front of you hides the bottom half of the circle. But if you are standing on a mountain where you can see both above and below you, and the sun is behind you and it is misty or has just rained, chances are good that you will see more of the rainbow’s circle.

To see the full circle,

however, you will have to be in an airplane, literally above the clouds. Or you could create your own rainbow. I am a physicist, and I’ll explain how to do that in a minute.

How to create and see a circular rainbow

One experiment you can try in summer is to turn on a sprinkler hose using the “mist” setting. Remember to have the sun behind you. If you create a fine mist screen in front of you and look at your shadow, you might see a rainbow. It is not difficult to see colors, but to see a full circle, you will need some patience and practice, just like

scientists.

So next time you are on an airplane, grab the window seat. If you are flying a little above the cloud cover, keep a lookout for the small shadow of your plane on the clouds. That means the sun is behind you.

The clouds are tiny water droplets, so chances are you may see a small circle of color around the shadow of the aeroplane. This phenomenon is nicknamed “pilot’s glory,” because pilots who fly all the time and have a good view from the cockpit have a better chance of seeing it.

MET GALA 2023

KARL LAGERFELD A Line of Beauty

CITY FIRST

The 2023 Met Gala red carpet is officially underway at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This year, the annual affair celebrates the exhibition “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”

The gala will honour the legacy of Lagerfeld—the late designer who helmed fashion houses such as Chanel, Fendi, and his own eponymous line—and raise funds for The Met’s Costume Institute.

Just as important as the exhibition, of course, is the star-studded red carpet spectacle that will take place as

guests make their way up the famous Met steps. This year, the A-list attendees were asked to dress “in honour of Karl”—meaning you’re bound to see some custom ensembles that pay homage to Lagerfeld’s design signatures, including his Chanel tweeds and his own blackand-white uniform.

This year’s official Met Gala co-hosts were all present, including Penélope Cruz, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa, and Vogue’s Anna Wintour. The event brought together the best of actors like Priyanka Chopra and Alia Bhatt, singers, athletes, supermodels (including Naomi Camp-

bell), and artists. Alia Bhatt has often made sure to make heads turn with her fashion game on several occasions. She is a diva and there is no denying this fact. Well, all eyes were on her as she was all set to make her MET Gala debut this year. Tuesday morning turned out to be a great one for the fans of the actress as she took to her Instagram space to treat her fans and followers to several photos from the red carpet.

Priyanka Chopra has been grabbing all the limelight ever since she walked the red carpet of the MET Gala 2023. She never fails to make her fans speechless with her stunning looks. As expected

the actress stole all the limelight as she twinned with hubby Nick Jonas in black attires. Among the Indian stars who attended the ball, businesswoman and arts patron Isha Ambani also graced the world's biggest red-carpet event.

Like Alia Bhatt, Isha wore a creation by Nepalese-American designer and longtime collaborator Prabal Gurung. She ditched the classic gown and slipped into a reimagined saree for the occasion.
