HUMOR – A WONDER DRUG FOR WELL-BEING!

As one thinks over the multiple manifestations of humor, one can conclude that it is a delightful divine gift. Still, it must be used in moderation and in accordance with good judgement.

When this is done, a sense of humor can add zest and sparkle in our daily lives

Rajesh was late for work again. His employer had earlier given him the final warning about it, so he was worried about losing his job. Looking at his boss, he smiled and said, “I’m applying for the job again.” His boss smiled back. Rajesh’s sense of humor saved the day. A good sense of humor can, often defuse a tense situation. It can even help one to cope with adversity or a difficult situation. It benefits one’s health by enabling one to laugh. One might call laughter a luxury reflex. Its only function seems to be able to provide relief from tension in a kind of ‘respiratory gymnastics.’

Humor is the ability to see the funny or amusing side of things. Some call humor the sixth sense as it is important for our enjoyment of life and even for our survival, as much as any of the five physical senses.

Humor can brighten up even an apparently hopeless situation. It puts the recipient in a more pleasant, agreeable state. Relaxed laughter is healthy,

but distorted, artificial laughter can be a cover up for troubled feelings. Humor is an aid to a healthy mind and body. Persons with no sense of humor show symptoms of emotional disorders. They take themselves very seriously. Are such ones happy or do they contribute to the happiness of others?

Seeing the humorous side of one’s life and laughing at oneself helps in not thinking more of oneself than what is necessary.

A humorous situation occurs when the unexpected happens or something is out of place. Mostly, humor is expressed in words and comes in great variety

depending on nationality, social customs and environment. Some are intellectual or subtle, some crude and some are witty.

Also, what is funny to many persons can be meaningless to others. Some use intentional exaggeration for emphasis or humorous effect. “It’s raining cats and dogs,” “I nearly died laughing,” “I tried a thousand times.” Such statements are not literally true, but are usually understood by the listener.

Many persons are known for dry humor, they say something funny in a casual way and with a straight face. To laugh at one’s weaknesses is an im-

Laughter has many faces. One can distinguish between the innocent laugh, and the malicious, between that of the candid person, and one with an ulterior motive, the scoffing laughter of a mocker, from the benevolent laughter of a sympathetic companion, and the forced laughter in contrast to the spontaneous and natural laugh.

Jokes that leave people confused, humiliated, deceived, scared, suspicious or embarrassed, even if for a short time, are not in good taste. Some practical jokes that damage another’s clothing, possessions, waste time or delay a per-

WAKING UP TO THE WORLD’S WATER CRISIS

The world is becoming accustomed to the drip-drip of catastrophic headlines following each new climate-driven disaster. Increasingly frequent and severe heatwaves are causing wildfires in California and widespread coral die-offs in Australia. Unprecedented floods have wreaked havoc in Pakistan, Germany, China, and New Zealand. Drought in the Horn of Africa is causing famine for millions.

And this list could go on.

The common element underlying all these cataclysms is water. From the forced shutdown of nuclear reactors in France to the heavy snowfall that covered large swaths of North

America in December, or the recent cholera outbreak in Lebanon, we are witnessing the symptoms of a mounting global water crisis – either too much, too little, or too dirty.

Yet water remains mostly absent from global discussions. While concerns about the geopolitical order, climate change, and the COVID-19 pandemic have understandably been

in the spotlight, water is rarely discussed outside the context of humanitarian responses to local, national, or transboundary floods or droughts. This is a major blind spot: In the

son in some planned work are unkind.

A person may say, “but I don’t mind having jokes played on me, why should others mind when I play jokes on them?” One can never be sure in advance how the other person will feel. Joking with people, even gently teasing them, can be a sign of affection. But when teasing highlights someone’s weakness or failings, it is spiteful.

Some have a long repertoire or collection of funny stories and spend much time telling them.

They feel that they inject a little fun into other people’s lives and find it difficult to restrain them-

selves because of their over developed or even distorted sense of fun.

Like a coin, humor has two sides. Wit can be used either consciously or unconsciously as a weapon. There is a saying, ‘laughter kills’ and it proves true when a person becomes a victim of derisive humor or sarcasm. Jokes that are clean and said at the right time and place provide enjoyment and relaxation.

Thoughtless laughter and frivolous giggling beclouds and obscures sound judgement. It may cause a person to take serious matters lightly, due to which others can be offended or irritated.

Laughter is good medicine that can benefit one mentally, emotionally and physically. But at times, one must soberly view one’s life and the way one is living it. More vital is to cultivate a pleasant disposition rather than being a complainer or a grumbler. This would make one refreshing to others.

As one thinks over the multiple manifestations of humor, one can conclude that it is a delightful divine gift. Still, it must be used in moderation and in accordance with good judgement. When this is done, a sense of humor can add zest and sparkle in our daily lives.

RHB extends application deadline for Housing Schemes till April 20

First India Bureau

Jaipur: RHB has extended the last date of application in housing schemes launched in several cities including Jaipur and Jodhpur last month. People will now be able to apply online till April 20. Although the application process has been stopped from March 31 in Mahi Apartment in Pratap Nagar’s Jaipur and Independent Duplex in the Greenwood Mansions scheme after receiving more forms than the number of houses.

GST of around Rs 50,000 is being charged along with registration amount for residential schemes in Pratap Nagar of Jaipur. There is confusion among the people that if the application isn’t approved, their GST amount won’t be refunded. It is not so that those who don’t get a house in the lottery won’t be given back the registration fee including GST. Only application fee & processing fee won’t be refunded.

—Pawan Arora, RHB Commissioner

Arora said that applications in 3 schemes out of 7 schemes launched in Jaipur’s Pratap Nagar have been closed since March 31. “More applications have come in these three schemes

than the number of houses. 199 people have applied for 39 flats in the Samriddhi Yojana of G+2 flats (MIG A) in Sector 22, while 152 applications were received for the 2nd part of same

scheme, Stealth Plus 6 (MIG A) scheme of 120 flats. Thus, we have stopped application in these schemes from March 31,” he said.

Independent duplex scheme launched in Greenwood Mansions in Jaipur has received 444 applications, more than double for a total of 164 houses in HIG 1 & HIG 2. It has 46 in HIG 1, 234 for Duplex & 210 applications for 118 duplex of HIG 2. After receiving double the applications, application process has been closed in this scheme, he said.

If life were predictable it would cease to be life, and be without flavour. -Eleanor Roosevelt. But fortunately, some changes are predictable and a part of an average person’s life. And once such change that is so significant, yet completely swept under the rug is motherhood. I’m not talking about pregnancy and childbirth. About life, post all those things that we encourage and celebrate. We may physically prepare for taking care of a child with the latest gadgets, clothes, and parties but once that is over, there still remains a lifetime of learning and unlearning. And that is Matrescence!

Matrescence is a term that describes the experience of becoming a mother and the subsequent transformation of a woman's identity. This concept was introduced by psychologist Dana Raphael in the 1970s, but it has gained more attention in recent years as we as a society realised the importance of raising emotionally healthy mothers and children. Matrescence is not just about the physical act of giving birth, but more importantly about the emotional and psychological changes that a woman experiences when

she becomes a mother. It involves a shift in identity, as the woman becomes not just a person but also a caregiver and protector of her child. Matrescence is a process that occurs over time, and it involves learning new skills and adapting to new roles and responsibilities.

The most important aspect of matrescence is the social and cultural context in which it occurs. In many cultures, motherhood is idealized and romanticized, with little recognition of the challenges and difficulties that women face when they become mothers. This can lead to unrealistic expectations and feelings of guilt or failure when women struggle to meet these expectations. Advice is aplenty! Be an amazing parent and a great employee; but have

We as a society need to have a more supportive and realistic cultural context to help women to navigate the matrescence process with greater ease. This includes access to social support networks, such as other mothers and family members. With nuclear families this is not always possible, so spouses step up! The Government needs to step up with policies and programs that support maternal and child health, such as paid parental leave and affordable child care. Of course, this is not limited to biological mothers. Adoptive mothers, stepmothers, single fathers, and other caregivers can and should be prepared for the process of matrescence as they take on the role of caring for a child. It is not about biology, but rather about the experience of becoming a caregiver and protector of a child.

But from my personal experience, I can tell you this. Despite the challenges of matrescence, there are also many positive aspects to the process. Becoming a mother can be a deeply rewarding and transformative experience, as women learn to care for and nurture their children.

For me, matrescence has led to an increased understanding of myself and a deeply spiritual inward journey into understanding who I am and what I want out of my life. This complex and multifaceted process involves both emotional and psychological changes and needs to be paid more attention to. By simply understanding the process of matrescence, we can better support mothers and promote maternal and child mental health and well-
