The path for elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has been cleared with the Supreme Court rejecting a petition against the proposed delimitation of constitution which, the state parties alleged, was done keeping the BJP’s interests in mind. The petitioners had argued that the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, empowers only the Election Commission of India to conduct the delimitation exercise. Refuting the point, the Centre said that the Act does not preclude the setting up of a Delimitation Commission by the government.

Compared to its population Jammu region will have a disproportionate number of assembly constituencies. And that is what State parties were not ready to accept. Following these major changes the BJP can now look forward to being part of UT’s power structure.
