CHINMAYA GHAREKHAN KEEPS AUDIENCE ENTHRALLED AT LAUNCH OF HIS BOOK “CENTRES OF POWER”

On Friday, at India International Centre, was launched Chinmaya Gharekhan’s book, “Centres of Power”, published by Rupa. The Hall was overfull, with our greatest philosopher Ashish Nandy sitting in front row.
The panel to discuss the book consisted of Krishna Rasgotra former foreign secretary, former Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Shyam Saran, President of the India International Centre and former foreign secretary and myself.
The author was the opening speaker. He had no text. His speech had the audience enthralled. His wit was combined with substance and humour laced with anecdotes. This came as a pleasant surprise to all present.
The climax of his career was his working with Indira Gandhi for five years and two years with Rajiv Gandhi. Policy is made in P.M.O’s office, it is implemented by concerned ministries. Gharekhan and his colleagues made sure that every single file from the P.M.O. was dealt without delay. Gharekhan got on well with the Prime Minister. From time to time both spoke to each other in French to the discomfiture of officers and Ministers. He told me that it was not only a privilege but an honour to work with Indira Gandhi
Gharekhan joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1958. Five years after I did. He turned out to be among the outstanding I.F.S officers and more than a brilliant but low key diplomat.
His first posting took him to Congo in Africa. At the best of times the country was no favourite posting. My own view is that every I.F.S officers should have the experience of an African country. I spent three years in Zambia and look back on my stay in Lusaka with nostalgia.

How Imran Khan’s populism has divided Pakistan and put it on a knife’s edge
Pakistan’s political crisis has worsened significantly since Imran Khan lost a no-confidence motion in parliament and was ousted from power last April. Since then, Khan’s populist rhetoric has stoked divisions in society, leading to extreme polarisation and the violent reactions we’ve seen this week.
Khan began sowing these divisions even before he left office. Before his ouster, he had blamed Pakistan’s onetime close ally, the United States, for conspiring against his government and trying to push him from power.
His party, the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf, has a long history of labelling its political opponents as Western slaves, so this narrative reverberated among his supporters.
Khan then shifted his anger towards the army and its thenchief, General Qamar Bajwa, claiming they were trying to bring down his government.
Khan and the military were once close. Soon after he rose to power in 2018, many of the leaders in his party claimed it
was perhaps the first time a civilian government and the military establishment were on the same page in Pakistan.
But the relationship started to fray over the appointment of a new head of Inter-Services Intelligence, Pakistan’s powerful intelligence agency, in 2021. Khan wanted the thenchief of the agency, General Faiz Hameed, to continue in
the role, while the military wanted someone else.
Then, last November, Khan survived an assassination attempt at a political rally in Punjab province. A day later, he pointed the finger at three senior government figures as being behind the attack – the new prime minister, the interior minister and a senior intelligence official.
The military establishment issued a statement accusing Khan of fabricating the allegations. Khan responded immediately by saying that he stood by his allegations.
While political violence has a long history in Pakistan, it has certainly increased in the wake of Khan’s populist attacks on the military and other institutions and the political
polarisation that has ensued.
The new government’s pursuit of Khan has also sparked anger among his supporters.
After removing Khan’s party from power last year, the Pakistan Democratic Alliance – an alliance of several other parties, including the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) and Pakistan People’s Party –formed a government and immediately began targeting Khan and his party officials in whatever ways possible.
Khan has faced a flood of other allegations, however, ranging from corruption to sedition. By some counts, he faces more than 100 cases around the country. There are elements of revenge politics here because Khan’s government had also targeted rival political leaders through corruption charges when it was in power.
The headquarters of Pakistan’s army was attacked by a mob in Rawalpindi, as was the house of a corps commander in Lahore. This is unprecedented – the army headquarters have only ever been targeted by terrorists before.

Drugs caught off Kerala worth over cumulative value under UPA’
Amit Shah slams Congress-led UPA govt over recent drug seizure off the Kerala coast
Dwarka (PTI): Union Home
Minister Amit
Shah on Saturday said the value of recent drug seizure off the Kerala coast was more than the cumulative value of narcotics seized during the ten-year rule of Congress-led UPA government at the Centre before the BJP came to power in 2014. In a jibe at Congress, he said the lapses in coastal security led to the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.
Shah made these comments while laying the foundation stone for the permanent campus of the National Academy of Coastal Policing (NACP) at Okha in Gujarat’s Devbhumi Dwarka district.
“The Indian Navy and Coast Guard caught drugs worth Rs 12,000 crore off the Kerala coast recently. This is more than what was caught in an entire year in the past. During ten years of UPA, narcotics worth Rs 680 crore were seized. And we have caught drugs worth Rs 12,000 crore in one instance. It proves that the security scenario has improved,” he said.
Laying the foundation stone for the campus of National Academy of Coastal Policing (NACP) at Okha in Gujarat on Saturday, Union Home minister Amit Shah said India always needs to be on an “alert” mode against its neighbours. Speaking at the event, where a Bhoomi Pujan for the Academy was conducted, Shah said India has 15500 kilometer long land boundary and 7500 kilometer long sea boundary. “We also have got neighbours, against whom we always need to be on alert,” he added without naming the

WHAT IS THE REAL REASON FOR KIREN RIJIJU’S DEPARTURE?
Ultimately, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju had to pay the price for his immaturity as he has been sent to the Ministry of Earth Sciences as the top leadership tries to persuade him to ‘stay grounded’. Just two qualities of taker Arjun Ram Meghwal have brought him here, one he is one of the ministers very close to the top leadership. And second he speaks and does as much as he is told. Rijuju’s sudden departure was scripted when in an important meeting of the PM, CJI and LoP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary was called to select the new CBI chief. In the initial trends, the request of the top leadership showed that ‘why not give an extension to the current CBI director Subodh Jaiswal.’ So many questions have been
raised on the extension of the director’s service, how can the CBI director be different from it?’ Then the name of 1987 batch Dinkar Gupta, who is currently the NIA chief, came up. But the CJ was of the clear opinion that ‘seniority should always be taken into account’, thus Praveen Sood of the 1986 batch was the senior-most and his name was sealed. After this, there was a mention of mutual harmony between the judiciary and the legislature in the top leadership and CJI during tea. And when the matter did ‘come out’, it went far away. The Chief Justice drew the attention of the top leadership to the statements of the Minister of the Govt, where he has been degrading the collegium system.
HOW DID KURULKAR GET HONEY TRAPPED?
Pradeep Kurulkar, director of the country’s renowned organization DRDO, has been arrested by the ATS for sharing important info related to the country’s security with a Pakistani girl, and the agency is trying to find out ‘how many more girls’ have been used for this ‘honey trapping’. Kurulkar, 59, was due to retire from his DRDO job in November this year. If sources to be believed, it was Kurulkar who used to teach the people of his dept the tricks to avoid honey trap. Last year, one such program was organized at the DRDO campus in Pune, where Kurulkar, as an expert, threw light on ways to avoid honey traps. When asked what compelled him to share sensitive info about his country with a stranger for a few nude photos, Kurulkar said he was a victim of ‘loneliness’. While Kurulkar and his 4 generations are imbued with patriotism, he and his family have a very old association with the Sangh. In a viral video he is seen with his wife and saying that ‘for the last 14 years he has been playing the saxophone in various programs of Sangh.’
WHY SIDDARAMAIAH TOOK TIME FOR CM CHAIR?
It was known to everyone even before the results of the K’taka elections that if the Cong govt came to power in the state, the crown would be on Siddaramaiah’s head. One, he is the biggest leader of 36% OBC castes of the state, the Kuruba caste from which he comes, the percentage of this caste in the state is also more than 7%. And perhaps the more important thing is that he is Rahul Gandhi’s first choice as the CM. But there was also a faction of the Cong which continued to advocate for DK Shivkumar. This group was headed by Rahul’s favourite KC Venugopal and Congress’ Karnataka in-charge Randeep Surjewala. Seeing this, K’taka Cong MLA G Parameshwara came to the ground with his supporters and started demanding the post of Deputy CM. Sensing all these circumstances, the Congress entrusted its observer SK Shinde with the responsibility to ‘dispose of the matter.’
ONE MISTAKE OF CONGRESS IN MATHURA
Due to a mistake of the Congress in the recent civic polls in Uttar Pradesh, Congress could not make its mayor in the municipal corporations. In fact, on April 16, Cong state president Brijlal Khabri gave Form 7A to SS Upadhyay Bittu along with giving the party symbol for the election and Bittu got involved in the preparations for election. Meanwhile, Rajkumar Rawat left the BSP and joined the Cong. Khabri then asked Bittu to return the symbol as he now wanted Rawat to be candidate. But Bittu went to the court, the court upheld his election symbol, so the Cong had to field Rawat as an independent. At the same time, Cong got Rawat complete support from SP and RLD as well. Rawat’s main contest was against Sunil Bansal’s relative and BJP candidate Vinod Agarwal. When the results of the election were declared, the BJP won the election with a record 1,45,720 votes.
WHY THIS IS THE TIME TO DEMONETISE `2K NOTE
T here were already speculations that Rs 2,000 note would be hit by demonetisation, because the government’s press had stopped printing these notes a long time ago, and its circulation was also limited to large transactions. But as soon as the results of the Karnataka elections came and the saffron fort collapsed there, the government took this big decision in a hurry. These notes are to be deposited in banks by 30 September 2023 and just two months after that, assembly elections are to be held in fi ve states i.e. Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana and Mizoram. Look carefully, except one Madhya Pradesh, there are opposition governments in all the other four states. So, it is certain that once the Rs 2,000 note is banned, the fund management of the opposition parties may collapse, as for the BJP, it has the biggest stock of ‘Electoral Bonds’.
...AND FINALLY
LEAVING TUGHLAQ LANE WAS ‘LUCKY’ FOR RAHUL GANDHI!
The Many strange decisions remain imprisoned in the womb of destiny. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also got caught in the web woven by the BJP and he had to leave his official residence - 12 Tughlaq Lane - where he was living for the last 19 years, due to an unwanted decision of the Surat court. Therefore, he shifted to his mother’s house at 10 Janpath. Rajkumar Sharma, a well-known astrologer from Mumbai, has circumambulated 12 Tughlaq Lane in the past and has shared many important information regarding Vastudosh there. According to Pandit Sharma, 12 Tughlaq Lane is a southfacing house, which is not

Jaipur: The Opposition BJP leaders on Saturday reacted sharply to recovery of cash and gold in an almirah in Yojana Bhavan in Jaipur. good and due to which ‘negative energy’ prevails there. This was the reason that Congress had to face defeat for the last several years. Rahul too lost from Amethi. Congress seats in the Lok Sabha decreased continuously and many strong leaders of the party left the Congress and went elsewhere. At one point, Rahul’s recognition in the party itself was reduced to a great extent. Pandit Sharma says that ‘the day Rahul left 12 Tughlaq Lane, his rise begun.’ Cong wins Karnataka with thunder and drumbeat and its prospects look better in upcoming 5 state assembly Polls.
Pandit ji says that ‘Rahul Gandhi’s zodiac sign is Scorpio and the ascendant is Cancer. From Dec 2022, Rahul’s ‘Chandra Mahadasha’ has started which will continue till 2032. This dasha is indicating towards a positive change. May the days ahead be bright and full of hope for RaGa, his shifting to 10 Janpath during this period is also an auspicious one.
Delhi is going to be far away for the BJP maharathis of Delhi. Important sources related to the Sangh reveal that in Delhi BJP will replace all its seven winning MPs and new faces will be fielded. If sources are to be believed, the tickets of Gautam Gambhir from East Delhi and Hansraj Hans from North West Delhi will be cut. The case of Chandni Chowk MP Harshvardhan is also said to be in limbo. On the other hand, Manoj Tiwari, MP from North-East Delhi, can be sent to Bihar to contest the Lok Sabha elections. Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva can be fielded in place of Meenakshi Lekhi from New Delhi. West Delhi MP Pravesh Verma can be fielded from a Jat dominated seat in Haryana or western UP and Ramesh Vidhuri from South Delhi can also be replaced.
“The incident describes the high spirits of the corrupt in the Congress rule. Now govt buildings are being used
to hide evidence of black money. State ministers are also accusing their own govt of corruption. There is every possibility that the state govt will not conduct an impartial inquiry. Through this letter, I request you to hand over the probe to a central agency,” Poonia wrote.
Vasundhara Raje, GS Shekhawat, and Rajendra Rathore also condemned the incident.

DR TRUPTI SHIROLE cityfirst@firstindia.co.in
When you are thirsty, what is the first thing you reach for? For many, it is a can of soda. If you are seeking a healthier alternative, you might soon be swapping your regular beverage with a soda that promises to have extra benefits.
Prebiotic and probiotic beverages have recently gained popularity, thanks in part to TikTok reviews. Indeed, a search for 'probiotic soda' on the social media site yields 119 million results, with many people rating popular gut-health beverages from brands such as Poppi, Olipop, and Culture Pop.
These fizzy and sugary drinks are touted to contain less sugar than traditional sodas and are created with components that are thought to promote a healthier gut.
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PROBIOTICS AND PREBIOTICS?
Simply put, probiotics are live microorganisms, usually bacteria, that dwell in our gut and help to keep it balanced and healthy. Prebiotics are fibres that we cannot digest. They feed the probiotics, allowing them to grow and thrive in our gut.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HAVING PROBIOTICS AND PREBIOTICS IN SODA?
Marilia Chamon, qualified nutritional therapist, gut health specialist, and creator of Gutfulness Nutrition, is not shocked by the popularity of prebiotic and probiotic beverages. She attributes their sudden appeal to several things.
To begin with, people are becoming more aware of the significance of gut health. "Increasing awareness of gut health and the role of the gut microbiome in overall well-being has driven interest in products that claim to support gut health," Chamon hypothesises.
Second, she claims that the popularity of these sodas is based on convenience. "As a beverage, they provide a tasty way to incorporate beneficial microbes and dietary fibers into one's routine, making them an attractive option for consumers who want

to improve their gut health without making significant dietary changes," she explains.
ARE PROBIOTIC AND PREBIOTIC SODAS GOOD FOR YOUR GUT?
While these drinks are becoming more popular as a healthier alternative to standard sodas, are they genuinely healthy for your gut and overall health? Chamon isn't quite convinced. "Aside from increased fibre intake, I don't see much benefit to it," she says. "If you eat a Western diet with a high intake of animal proteins and saturated fat and little consumption of whole foods, prebiotic sodas can contribute to your

nal infections and inflammatory bowel disease. Reyes, on the other hand, claims that certain sodas may induce stomach problems such as:
Chamon has comparable issues with bloating, gas, and diarrhoea. "Introducing probiotics can cause gas and bloating, especially for those with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)," she warns.
"The prebiotic fibre used in these types of sodas is usually inulin, which is a common cause of bloating and gas, especially in people with sensitive digestive systems or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)." "Some brands claim their soda will relieve bloating, but it may do the opposite," she speculates.
■ Probiotic and prebiotic sodas are a new trend in the beverage industry, claiming to promote a healthier gut
■ These sodas may offer benefits such as hitting daily fiber intake, improving digestion, and boosting the immune system
■ THowever, some probiotic and prebiotic sodas have high sugar content and can cause digestive problems
daily recommended fibre intake," she continues. "However," she adds, "I would prefer that people focus on improving their dietary patterns rather than relying on prebiotic sodas to support their health goals."
While Chamon feels these sodas can be a handy and fun method to add dietary fibre into one's daily routine, she believes they should not be used to replace a diet rich in whole foods, such as:
■ fruits and vegetables entire grains
■ lentils, nuts, and seeds
According to Chamon, the most important thing to ask is, "What are you taking probiotics for? Probiotics are strain-dependent, with different strains providing varying health bene-
DANGERS OF CONSUMING PROBIOTIC AND PREBIOTIC DRINKS
According to Karen Reyes, a board-certified dietitian, drinking these beverages has both health benefits and potential health hazards. On the one hand, she claims they may boost digestion and immunological function by stimulating antibody synthesis. "Some studies even suggest that they may have beneficial effects on mood and mental health by promoting the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin," she continues.
She also references a 2016 research published in Nutrition Bulletin, which suggests that probiotic use may be beneficial for a variety of health issues,
Furthermore, some of these sodas have a high sugar content, which can contribute to heart disease, some malignancies, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. The effects of prebiotic and probiotic drinks are still being studied.
Reyes believes it is critical to stress that research on probiotics and prebiotics is still in its early stages and that additional research is needed to properly grasp their potential health advantages.
Meanwhile, if you want to drink a probiotic or prebiotic soda, she recommends looking for brands with natural components and no added sugars. Reyes says there is no clear answer to whether you should drink them every day because it depends on a multitude of factors, including your total diet, lifestyle, and health goals.
However, both experts believe that they are generally safe for most individuals when consumed in moderation.
