Eight districts were badly hit, Fadnavis tells House; orders issued for immediate release of aid to state farmers

Mumbai: Unseasonal rains have damaged mango, wheat and harbhara (Bengal gram) crops across 13,729 hectares in eight districts of the state, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis told the Assembly on Wednesday. Orders have been issued for the immediate release of aid to farmers hit by the rains, he added.
Maximum damage has been reported from Palghar, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Jalgaon, Nandurbar, Dhule, Buldhana and Washim districts, he said.
“Orders to release immediate relief and financial assistance have been issued,” said Fadnavis.
A decision on immediate relief was taken on Tuesday night based on preliminary infor- mation, even as the exact extent of damage is being ascertained, he said.

Man Held For Setting His Wife On Fire After She Refuses To Leave Their Home
Palghar: A 40-year-old man from Thane district has been arrested for allegedly setting his wife on fire. The incident occurred when the woman refused to leave their home in Nala Sopara, an official said. The victim is currently undergoing treatment at a civic hospital. She told the police that her husband wanted to drive her out of their home and when she did not agree to it, he poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze. The accused has been booked for attempted murder.
Four Members Of Family Rescued From Bldg Fire
Nagpur: A family of four, including two children, was rescued from a fire by the Fire Brigade in Nagpur city. The building they were in caught fire on Tuesday at around 9 pm. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. The family got stuck on the second floor of the two-storey building and were going to jump from the terrace in a panic. However, teams of the fire brigade and civic officials reached the spot in time and rescued the family.

Mumbai: City traffic police penalized more than 10,000 two-wheeler riders for not wearing a helmet and 73 motorists for drunk driving during a special drive on Holi, an official said. “Due to Holi and Shab-e-Barat on Tuesday, we conducted a special drive and penalized people who were found violating traffic norms,” the official added. Traffic police fined 746 motorcycle users for riding triple seats and 10,215 were fined for not wearing helmets.
