B
ack in ‘96, we realized we had a lot of friends who were interested in God but not church. So we made a church that we (and they) actually want to come to. Good coffee, good music, a lifechanging message and a room that you can be anonymous in – until you’re ready to step out and meet people. And BTW, your kids, no matter what age, will love it here. We’ve been at it ever since and the result is a movement of people across the country, including a few thousand people across four sites in Central Kentucky. Crossroads is a scrappy team on the move. We’ve met a God who loves us, pursues us and really knows us. And we’ll do anything short of sin to introduce our friends to Him. So we run. We run after our friends. We run toward whatever God has for us. We run because God ran to us. COMMUNITIES FLIP CITIES– CITIES CHANGE THE WORLD. In every city where our community exists, we are working to flip the status quo. From poverty to prosperity, depression to hope, aimlessness to purpose. This place was made for you, and we encourage you to check out crossroads.net/locations for locations and times. We also have a team of friends online who can help answer all your questions and get you plugged in. Simply click the icon at the bottom of the homepage and say “hello.”

CHI Saint Joseph Health work on Habitat Home Build
Teams from CHI Saint Joseph Health and Lex18 began work on a Lexington Habitat for Humanity home on Betty Hope Lane. “We are proud to be a part of this Lexington Habitat home build,” said Bruce Tassin, CEO, CHI Saint Joseph Health, and president, Saint Joseph Hospital. “At Saint Joseph, we believe that we are called to serve, and this is a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate that belief. We have served our community since 1877 and we look forward to building on that strong connection of service through our ministry into the future.” Over the next three months, more than 100 staff members from throughout CHI Saint Joseph Health will participate in the work on the home. Volunteers
represent all areas throughout the organization, including teams from the CHI Saint Joseph Health Foundations, human resources, nurses, respiratory therapists, exercise physiologists and marketing. Over the past 30 years, Lexington Habitat for Humanity has built more than 450 new homes and worked with more than 75 owner-occupants to complete home preservation or critical repair projects on existing homes in Lexington. According to Lexington Habitat, it takes more than 1,500 volunteer hours to build a Habitat home and volunteers of all skill levels are welcomed. The house is expected to be completed in early September. It will be home for Mona Ashby, who is raising her 7-yearold grandson. Mona says this is the biggest and best blessing she has ever received that “gives me great peace.”

HEALTH Bug Bites
The health department has surveyed Lexington neighborhoods that will identify and treat large areas of standing water that serves as a prime location for mosquitoes to lay their eggs. Luke Mathis, Environmental Health and Preparedness team leader at LFCHD says “Targeting immature mosquitoes is a more effective control strategy as it stops mosquitoes from developing into adults that can feed on humans and transmit mosquito-borne diseases like Zika and West Nile. For spraying, the health department uses Duet which is an EPA-approved agent that features a component that stimulates resting mosquitoes in trees and foliage. This will cause them to fly in the air and into the mosquito-killing agent spray.

or souffled, Few things can beat corn pudding, spoonbread, or corn bread made with fresh peak season corn. And fried? I take it one step further and toss whole ears of corn into a deep fryer. The intense heat of the fryer quickly caramelizes the corn while simultaneously steaming the inside of the kernels. Slathered in butter, it takes me back to my grandmother’s table, sans the extreme crunch and leftover bacon fat. Deep Fried Corn. Simple. Quick. Fantastic. Lime Chive Butter. I brought 5 tablespoons of unsalted butter to room temperature before adding 1/2 teaspoon white pepper, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 2 teaspoons fresh lime juice, and 3 tablespoons snipped garden chives. I set the butter aside and cranked a deep fryer to 350 degrees. Typically, I fry whole ears of corn. For more manageable smaller corn bites, I cut them down a notch. After shucking and cleaning six ears of Wayne County bi-colored corn, I trimmed the ends before slicing the ears into 1 1/2” discs. Working in batches, to not overcrowd the deep fryer, I carefully lowered the corn into the hot oil for about 3-4 minutes. When they started to crisp around the edges and caramelize, I tumbled them onto a parchment paper-lined sheet pan, slathered them with the chive-flecked lime butter, and stabbed them with toothpicks before finishing with flaky sea salt, a splash of lime, and additional chives.

imagine we all have differing target dates as to when summer officially begins. Some folks might consider the last day of school or the opening of pools as the start of summer. Then, of course, there’s meteorological summer and astronomical summer. In my book, summer kicks off when roadside corn trucks dot the rolling country roads and flat bed trucks, stacked high with corn, back into stalls of the farmers market. Tender, sweet, and fresh enough to eat raw, few things top the arrival of locally grown corn. Back in the day, my grandmother fried her garden corn. She’d heap spoonfuls of leftover salty bacon fat in a large cast iron skillet and fry the cut off kernels until they caramelized and crunched like popcorn. While she creamed a few batches from time to time, boiled whole cobs rarely hit the table. She was the fry queen. As summer moved along, my grandmother instinctively morphed into her ‘depression era’ saving mode, canning the remaining bounty of corn for the leaner times. While her straight up canned corn lost its luster after overwintering in the dusty grim cellar, her preserved corn relishes survived bright and piquant. When my family settled into our own home on the far side of the family farm, my parents took a more modern approach with our garden corn. Bacon fat wasn’t invited to the party. Picked fresh from the garden, it was either meticulously shucked and de-silked before a quick steam or cut from the cob, milked, and briefly sauteed. Salt. Pepper. Butter. Corn. Heaven. During peak season, the endless extra hauls of corn got shucked, cut off, milked, blanched, and frozen. Nowadays, I’m all over the place when the corn starts rolling in. I love it baconwrapped, chargrilled, boiled, steamed, creamed, pureed, pan fried, sauteed,

HOME & GARDEN Text to 911
Mayor Linda Gorton announced a new regional initiative bringing “text-to-911” to Lexington and several Central Kentucky counties. “People can now send text messages to local 911 call centers in Fayette, Jessamine, Garrard and Lincoln counties” Gorton said. Texting to 911 is simple, said Robert Stack, Director of the Lexington Division of Enhanced 911.
• Development of a short- and long-range strategic plan for recycling in Lexington; • Investigating private operation of the City’s recycling center; • Seeking new markets for paper bales; • Assessing and securing contracts for crushed glass; and • Evaluating the purchase of advanced glass recycling machinery. The City is investigating the repair or possible replacement of its aluminum sorting machine. And negotiations are ongoing with two recycled paper mills now under construction. The City hopes to be able to send paper materials to them when they open this fall, but will be aggressively pursuing all possibilities.
Home and Garden Calendar “Just enter 911 in the ‘To’ field and push the send button,” Stack said. “Texts should contain the location of the emergency, and explain the type of help needed. Citizens are encouraged to text in simple words and to keep messages brief.” Top tier cell phone providers, including AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and T-mobile, support the service. No photos or videos can be sent.
Pick Lexington’s Flower
Help decide Lexington’s City Flower by visiting America in Bloom Lexington on Facebook and voting for your favorite flower. The options are Echinacea Pupura, Blue Catmint, and Blue Salvia. Voting ends Friday, July 19 at midnight.
Mayor orders jumpstart to city’s sputtering recycling program
“I want to make the changes we need to make and get our recycling program back on track,” Mayor Linda Gorton said. Gorton ordered city staffers to hire professional experts to make recommendations. A consultant, Resource Recycling Systems, will recommend a package of steps Lexington needs to take to overhaul its recycling program, including:
