SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR Commerce Lexington awarded Small Business of the Year honors to ExecuTrain at the annual Salute to Small Business Luncheon in August. Additional winners included a NonProfit and Community Impact award for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass.
Recipients of the Bluegrass AgTech Development Corp Challenge Grant include HempWood, Isitrac, Lepidext Inc, Parasight System Inc., RedLeaf Biologics, Spirited Inc, and Sunflower Fuels. Target has announced it will no longer accept personal checks as payment. Target continues to accept cash, credit, and debit cards, along with ApplePay. One CNN viewer proposed an alternative in a comment, “What about barter? Can I do their dishes in the employee lounge for a box of diapers?”
Walking paths are expanding at Jacobson Park, in addition to a trail section to be added along the lake in the fall. Although additional trees are not currently in the city’s budget, Friends of Jacobson Park have requested participation in Reforest the Bluegrass, and it’s been confirmed for Spring 2025. They are also hard at work raising grant funding for other larger trees in the future and parks-identified native planting areas.

On Second Thought
At a summer budget meeting, UK HealthCare announced that it has canceled plans to construct a Hamburg Hospital.
The UK Board of Trustees had approved the acquisitions of a total of 41 acres at its June 17, 2022, and Feb. 17, 2023, meetings.
The already-purchased $39 million, 41-acre stretch may become home to a clinic with specialities — similar to the Turfland location of UK HealthCare— in the future.
It’s Back
COVID never really went away, but COVID-19 cases are once again on the rise in Fayette County. August cases more than doubled the number of cases from July. On Aug. 17, 2024 the city had 190 confirmed cases compared to 84 on July 14. These totals do not include at-home tests. The FDA approved the 2024-25 COVID-19 vaccine in August, expected to be widely available in September. Complete information will be posted on the Health Department’s social media sites and www.LFCHD.org once finalized. You can also help slow the spread of COVID-19 by:
• Wearing a well-fitted mask in public areas;
• Avoiding close contact with people who are sick;
• Staying home when sick;
• Covering coughs and sneezes;
• Avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth;
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Deadline Extended for Solar
The City of Lexington is extending the deadline to sign up for Solarize Lexington, a program to help residents install solar panels on their homes. Participants must submit an interest form by Monday, Sept. 2 to participate in the program this year. Some grant funds are still available for low to moderate-income homeowners. Eligible residents must own and occupy their single-family home. If you think you qualify, call the Division of Community and Resident Services at (859) 300-5300. Proof of residence, homeownership and income are required. Funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Solarize Lexington is designed to make going solar easier and more affordable. The program walks residents through the process of getting solar panels and provides a discount of up to 15 percent. Homeowners, non-profits, small businesses and places of worship in Fayette County are welcome to apply.
Please be aware that scammers have contacted people by phone, online and door-to-door. No one from Solarize Lexington will contact you unless you reach out first. Lexington’s only Solarize partners are the Kentucky Solar Energy Society and Solar Energy
