TRANSITIONS

Shelley and Lindsey Roberts, the owners of Grassroots Pharmacy posted this message for customers and neighbors on August 27, 2024.

“The pharmacy department of Grassroots has closed as of 8/27/24. All prescription records have been transferred to a Walgreens, 3001

Pink Pigeon Pkwy. They have graciously agreed to continue caring for our cherished customers…. Lindsey and I have both had really exciting opportunities presented to us and we knew it was time to pursue the next set of dreams.

Now for some GREAT news! The front end portion of Grassroots will remain OPEN for all those smoothies you love and supplements you need. During the next few days I will personally be passing along all my supplement knowledge and recommendations to the friendly staff that will continue to serve the health needs of your family.”

Neighborhood Meeting

On the Street

Surveying has begun for a project to improve safety along a busy Lexington Corridor. The Kentucky

Transportation Cabinet, in partnership with the City of Lexington, is gathering data along Lexington’s number one Priority Safety Corridor – Northeast New Circle Road.

Over the next month, contractors will survey New Circle Road to collect data to develop plans to improve safety for all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.

This commercial and residential corridor experienced the highest number of Lexington’s fatal and serious injury crashes from 2015-2021. There were 34 fatal or severe crashes during that period. Nearly half of those were people walking or bicycling, with no access to sidewalks, bike facilities, few ADA accessible transit stops, and limited safe pedestrian crossings.

This project is managed by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and funded by a Safe Streets and Roads for All grant that was awarded to the City of Lexington by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The award will provide $21.7 million for three significant efforts to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes:

• A reconstruction of New Circle Road between Boardwalk and Bryan Station Road to address intersection related crashes and bicycle/ pedestrian and transit access and safety.

• A public safety campaign to target safe driving behaviors.

• Establishing a vision zero coordinator position within the City to implement the recommendations of the Lexington Area Safety Action Plan.

Preliminary project plans are anticipated to be available for the community to review in the summer of 2025.

Rumor Has It?

The Sixth District office recently met with management from both Lexington Peddlers Mall and Lexington Farmers Market. The Friends of Jacobson Park thanked AE Construction for their volunteer work, painting fences from Camp Kearney down to Shelter 6.

CELEBRATING WOMEN’S HEALTH AWARENESS

THINK PINK

Observing Breast Cancer Awareness

Month

The American Cancer Society reports that breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States (other than skin cancer). They stress that early detection can lead to increased treatment options. From the American Cancer Society:

“The goal of screening exams for breast cancer is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms (like a lump that can be felt). Screening refers to tests and exams used to find

a disease, such as cancer, in people who do not have any symptoms. Early detection means using an approach that lets breast cancer get diagnosed earlier than otherwise might have occurred.

Breast cancers that are found because they are causing symptoms tend to be larger and are more likely to have already spread beyond the breast. In contrast, breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be smaller and still confined to the breast. The size of a breast cancer and how far it has spread are some of the most important factors in predicting the prognosis (outlook) of a woman with this disease.

Most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save thousands of lives each year, and that many more lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests.”

The Heart of the Matter Did you know…?

According to the National Institute of Health, both women and men who have a heart attack often have chest pain. However, in addition to chest pain, women are more likely to have these symptoms:

• Pain in the shoulder, back, or arm

• Shortness of breath

• Unusual tiredness and weakness

• Upset stomach

• Anxiety

These symptoms can happen together with chest pain or without any chest pain. Many women may not recognize that these are symptoms of a heart attack. Women may not get emergency treatment right away if they downplay their symptoms and delay going to the hospital, or if the usual initial screening tests performed at the hospital may not detect an early or atypical heart attack.

Happy 100th birthday to former Lexington vice mayor, Isabel Yates. She describes her history of civic engagement and decades of volunteer work with a quote from her father, ‘You’d better be proud of the place where you live, and you should live so the place is proud of you.’”

The Flats at Woodland project has applied for a land disturbance permit, and construction may soon be underway. The proposed senior housing at Woodland Christian Church first had a conceptual review with the Board of Architectural Review during the August 17, 2022 board meeting and submitted a proposal for a Certificate of Appropriateness that was heard during the December 13, 2022 BOAR meeting.

House Hunters?

Bluegrass Realtors reports that the number of residential properties available in the region has steadily risen throughout the year and, in August, climbed to the highest level since July 2020. Total inventory reached 3,419 properties, a 23% increase over the 2,789 homes available last year and up 2% from the previous month. August was the third consecutive month with inventory remaining over the 3,000 mark and the 10th consecutive month of year-over-year improvements.

New listings were flat from the previous month, but properties coming to market jumped ahead yearover-year by one percent. August saw new listings at 1,647 compared to 1,643 last year and have increased annually since February of this year, or seven consecutive months. Year-to-date, new listings have increased 6 percent, to 12,413 this year, up from 11,724 last year.

“Heading into the Fall, buyers have more housing options with the rise in inventory,” says Randy Newsome, president of Bluegrass Realtors®. “And interest rates continuing to drop is adding another bonus for buyers, giving them more purchasing power in their house hunt.”
