Linda Griffin currently serves as president of the company, but it was her father, Bill, who purchased an inactive quarry in the mid-1970’s to possibly use in a warehousing capacity. He later realized that to use the space, he had to figure out how to address moisture issues caused by water gushing from the ceiling. Thus, Highbridge Springs wasToday,born.Highbridge Springs is one of the oldest women-owned companies in the state, has 35 employees, and bottles over 20,000 gallons of water per day, which is delivered to customers in Central and Southeastern Kentucky and shipped into eight neighboring states.

Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton, members of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council, and officials with Kentucky Utilities Company announced a couple of weeks ago a joint resolution addressing the utility’s vegetation management practices related to the cutting and removal of trees located under power transmission lines throughout Fayette County.Atissue were tree trimming, removal and replacement practices, which are part of KU’s ongoing system maintenance. The work is designed to maintain and protect the utility’s infrastructure and enhance the safety and reliability of the system by keeping trees — widely acknowledged as one of the biggest threats to power lines — from coming in contact with overhead, high-voltage electric transmission lines. Among the updates to KU’s vegetation management program: • KU is modifying the analysis used to determine which trees, within or on the borders of its transmission rights-of-way, must be trimmed or removed;

Area Oktoberfests

Nothing says Fall quite like Oktoberfest — and there are dozens of them in the region. According to Eater, “the evolution of the current Oktoberfest spans more than 200 years, dating back to the inaugural event on October 12, 1810, and the nuptials of Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The royal occasion took place a year after a quelled rebellion in a neighboring county, so to establish a sense of unity across the Bavarian state, the family invited about 40,000 citizens to join the festivities at the gates of the city of Munich. The celebration lasted several days, ending on October 17 with horse races.”

Help process sorghum and press apples for cider while learning the history of these crops at Pleasant Hill (you’ll get to taste the fruits of your labor as well)!Take a hayride, paint a pumpkin, climb haystacks, ride a pony and play in the hay maze. Shop for honey, breads and jams at the Harvest Market. Watch craft demonstrations and play festival games. Meet the Farm animals and try Farm-made concoctions. Live music, an outdoor bar and a variety of food trucks help complete this perfect September weekend.

OCT 1 At Fort Boonesborough’s Fall Harvest and Trades Weekend, you’ll learn about ancient crafts, skills and trades kept alive even to this day — blacksmithing, woodworking, riving roof boards, hewing and notching logs, leather work and an 18th Century fall harvest.

You can’t possibly prepare for the severity or mildness of the coming winter without a visit to Beattyville’s annual Woolly Worm Festival, Oct 21- Oct 23. Beattyville has hosted the Woolly Worm Festival every year since 1988. The festival has been known to attract crowds of 100,000+. The weekend event is held along Main Street and includes woolly worm races, a car show and parade, helicopter rides, and a weekend full of live music on the Woolly Worm Stage. Weather. gov explains the woolly worm’s weather forecasting tradition, “The longer the wooly bear’s black bands, the longer, colder, snowier, and more severe the winter will be. Similarly, the wider the middle brown band is associated with a milder upcoming winter. The position of the longest dark bands supposedly indicates which part of winter will be coldest or hardest. If the head end of the caterpillar is dark, the beginning of winter will be severe. If the tail end is dark, the end of winter will be cold.”

SEP 24

SEP 30 Frankfort’s Bourbon on the Banks is back, Sep 30 - Oct 1. The banks of the picturesque Kentucky River will feature dozens of bourbons, ranging from the largest and most popular to small and obscure. Integrated among the many distilleries are opportunities to interactively increase your knowledge of bourbon and its rich history. Area microbreweries and wineries will also be giving samples as well. Food tents along with food trucks will be on hand with a wide and eclectic variety of foods. Walk the banks of the Kentucky River, enjoy acoustic musicians, and sample rare and unique bourbons, spirits, wine and beer.

In 2018 the City was awarded a $2 million federal grant to help it strengthen the overdose prevention infrastructure. Under that grant, the city, working with the Fayette County Health Department, has provided more than $1 million in naloxone to individuals at increased risk of overdose, and to those who want to be ready if they witness or suspect an overdose. Almost 14,000 naloxone kits were provided to individuals and programs and more than 130 overdose prevention trainings and naloxone distributions were held.

“Our first step has to be saving lives,” Gorton said. “Next comes helping with treatment. We greatly appreciate the partners who work with us, and the contributions of the members of the Mayor’s Substance Use Disorder Advisory Council, who are we are helping us administer the grant funding.”

Lexington was recently awarded a $2 million federal grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration that will allow the city to continue working with partners to provide lifesaving naloxone to people at risk of overdose, and to connect them with life-saving services.

“The impact of illegal drugs has been devastating since the pandemic, when we experienced a dramatic increase in overdose fatalities that no one could have predicted,” Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton said. “The overdose numbers have increased every year since the pandemic. The Kosair Charities Face It Movement is collaborating with the Kentucky Children’s Hospital (KCH) and Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center (KIPRC) to bring awareness to the importance of safe medication storage in the home to prevent accidental ingestions among children.

The Face It Movement has created a campaign, including a new resource and complimentary webpage, for families and professionals who work with families that offers tips to safely storing medication, as well as data points that highlight the critical nature of the issue. For example, the 2020 Kentucky Child Fatality and Near Fatality External Review Panel found that nearly one in six of all fatalities and near fatalities were related to the ingestion of substances. When the 2020 Expo was paused due to the pandemic, founder Gale Reece told HJ, “the crisis we prepare for is never the one we actually get, but if we all pull together, all generations, we will pull through this even stronger. Our elders remember other points of crisis — Pearl Harbor, Korea, Vietnam, Civil Rights Movement, 911, and the 2008 financial collapse just to mention a few,” adding “Our challenge when this crisis is waning is restoring and rebuilding the workforce. I do not know how that is going to affect older adults. One thing I do know is that older adults are essential to our non-profit organizations and volunteer communities.”
