September 5 & 12, 2010 Christ at the Center

I

t used to be that Labor Day Weekend marked the end of summer and Labor Day itself was a day to honor workers, particularly the September 5 organized labor Craig Goodrich to preach movement. But times change and we easily forget. I wonder if a similar thing has not happened to Sunday, what we used to call “the Lord’s Day?” The Fourth Commandment tells us to “Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy.” And it is based on the Genesis account in which God after having made the world in six days, rested on the seventh. In our Christian tradition, the Sabbath became the “Lord’s Day.” It is to be a day in which we worship, engage in acts of kindness and compassion and rest from labor. And remember it was Jesus who said, “Come unto me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:29). Have you forgotten the Sabbath, the Lord’s Day? What do you think it would mean to you to recover it, to embrace once again a weekly rhythm of work, worship and rest? I won’t guarantee it, but I suspect that it just might change the rest of your life.

Grace, peace and courage, Craig

A

s we begin another new church year and resume our regular fall schedule on Sunday, September 12, I am looking forward with great anticipation to seeing all of you here at the corner of 16th and Peachtree Streets! September 12 George Wirth to preach Together with the many opportunities for ministry through the Homeless Prayer Breakfast, Communion in Winship Chapel, Christian Education classes for all ages, Fellowship Hour in the Reception Room, and the ConfirmationYouth-Parent Brunch in the Youth Center, I invite and encourage you to join us for worship in the sanctuary at 9:00 and 11:15 am, which is the center of our life together as a congregation. I will begin a sermon series exploring The Sermon On The Mount with the first one entitled “Following The Rules.” It is my hope and prayer that these sermons will bring the words of Jesus’ greatest lessons about life and faith into our hearts and homes, and that each of us and all of us will make a commitment to worship God on a regular basis during the weeks and months ahead. As Stuart Holden once said “The life that is too busy for worship is busier than God intended it to be. Work is life’s eminent duty, but worship is life’s pre-eminent dynamic,” and I believe he was right. So come celebrate with us this Sunday in the sanctuary as we lift our praises to the Lord…and please bring your family and friends along with you!

Faithfully Yours,

George B. Wirth

FPC Fine Arts Committee is pleased to announce their 2010 Scholarship Awards. Thanks to your support of our programs, the Fine Arts Committee has been able to give scholarships to two worthy students at the First Presbyterian School of Performing Arts. One student will be able to continue his piano lessons and the other will be able to purchase a much-needed instrument for lessons and practice.

On September 12 we celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of the new program year with Celebration Sunday. Our children and youth “move up into new Sunday School classes and choirs. Adult classes resume, including Forum@First in Fifield Hall, featuring Atlanta area biblical scholars of note, and we find new ways to connect in Fellowship Hour after worship.

6:00 - 6:55 pm Conversation and Instruction 6:55- 7:25 pm Worship

Dr. Christopher Beck & Dr. Mark Douglas Since he published On the Origin of Species just over 150 years ago, Charles Darwin’s thoughts on evolution have continued to grow, change, and reverberate through science, religion, and culture. On Wednesday, September 8, Lay Academy kicks off with a provocative class that explores evolutionary theories, their development, their possibilities, and the various challenges to them that have been raised. Along the way, we’ll give close attention to the complex (and sometimes not-so-complex) ways that the Christian faith has engaged these theories, focusing especially on those engagements over the last 20 years. Please join us as we explore widely, think critically and learn respectfully in this provocative cross-disciplinary setting. All are welcome.
