September 19 & 26, 2010 Christ at the Center

O

ur 30th A n n u a l FOCUS Weekend (Foundations Of Christian Understanding) will be led by Dr. David Renwick, pastor of First September 19 David Renwick to preach Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg, S.C. as the preacher and keynote speaker. Dr. Renwick was born to Scottish parents in Malaysia, received his education at St. Andrews University in Scotland, Union College in NY, Gordon-Conwell Seminary in MA and then graduated with a PhD from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA. He served churches in Canada, Virginia, Texas and Kentucky before answering the call to Spartanburg in 2006. David and his wife Currie have three grown children, including their son Charles, daughter-in-law Lauren and grandson Maclean who all belong to the FPC Atlanta family. Dr. Renwick will deliver the 5th Annual Marion Kenan Lecture on Saturday evening in Fifield Hall (6:30) and preach at both the 9:00 and 11:15am worship services on Sunday. We look forward to welcoming David and Currie to this special weekend, and hope that you will invite your family and friends to join you for FOCUS 2010 here at the corner of 16th and Peachtree Streets as we celebrate our theme “Christ At The Center”!

A

s we sense the season changing all around us with cooler temperatures (finally!) leading us into the fall, we continue our series “The Sermon On The Mount,” focusing this Sunday on the title “A September 26 George Wirth to preach Change Of Heart” from the text in Matthew 5:21-37. This passage from the Bible quotes Jesus’ familiar words “You have heard that it was said…. But I say to you,” over and over again, indicating the changes He challenged us to make in the way that we live and in our relationships with others. I encourage all of us to read these verses prior to worship on Sunday morning, and to consider what a difference it would make in our families, our church, our city and nation and world if we actually took Jesus’ words to heart. I believe Fr. Henri Nouwen understood that challenge when he wrote the following insight: “Indeed, living a spiritual life requires a change of heart. Such a conversion may be marked by a sudden inner change, or it can take place through a long, quiet process of transformation…What is new is that we are set free from the compulsions of our world and have set our hearts on the only necessary thing…” Come join us this Sunday as we talk together about what that “only necessary thing” means, and how we can embrace it with all of our heart, mind, soul and strength. I look forward to seeing you in the sanctuary, and as always hope that you will encourage others to come along with you!

Faithfully Yours,

Faithfully Yours,

6:00 - 6:55 pm Conversation and Instruction 6:55- 7:25 pm Worship

Dr. Christopher Beck & Dr. Mark Douglas Since he published On the Origin of Species just over 150 years ago, Charles Darwin’s thoughts on evolution have continued to grow, change, and reverberate through science, religion, and culture. Along the way, we’ll give close attention to the complex (and sometimes not-so-complex) ways that the Christian faith has engaged these theories, focusing especially on those engagements over the last 20 years. Please join us as we explore widely, think critically and learn respectfully in this provocative cross-disciplinary setting. All are welcome.
