F L O W E R MINISTRY A HOLISTIC PICTURE The Flower Ministry at First Presbyterian Church is a multi-faceted operation of love and dedication by so many of our members. Here’s what happens: 1. Requests are made to honor or memorialize loved ones with Sanctuary flowers. Beth Edwards receives those requests at (404) 790-7726. 2. The flowers are purchased and arranged by the Flower Guild on Saturday to go into the sanctuary urns as an integral part of our worship experience. 3. After worship, the flowers are broken down by the Guild and arranged in vases to be delivered to the homebound. You may contact Pam Covington pamcovington1929@gmail. com if you are interested in this endeavor. 4. Deliverers from different church groups take a Sunday and participate in delivering 3-4 vases. Notes are placed with the vases with personalized greetings and the fact the flowers had been in the sanctuary that morning. The third week of each month is an open week led by Care Council members and anyone in the whole church who would like to deliver. Please contact Dorothy White-Williams at dorothywhitewilliams@gmail.com if you would like to be a part of that group. You are welcome to this vital ministry in all the above ways as well two others: *Emailing pparrish@firstpresatl.org if you know of people who might be in need of a flower visit. Sometimes we need a heads up! *Donating vases that are 6 to 8 inches to be used for the arrangements.

Let’s do lunch. GAYLE WHITE
T
hat’s the theme of a current national television promotion for Meals on Wheels, a program that delivers food to home-bound, usually elderly, neighbors. Meals on Wheels volunteers at FPC-ATL do lunch for others more than 13,000 times a year. Many recipients would have no access to well balanced diets without the program. But Meals on Wheels also provides food for the spirit. Meal delivery volunteers and the recipients become friends. They grow to care about each other and look forward to their regular interaction. Here’s what volunteer Kathy Williams wrote to FPC member and program director Sandi Harsh: “I deliver Meals on Wheels every Friday because feeding the hungry seems like a great way to share my blessings . . . .Along the way, I met Miss Hazel, who waits for me with a big smile to wish me a great day. Mr. Musa tells me to be sweet and have a great weekend. Before he moved to Florida to live with his daughter, Mr. Robert always asked me for a weather report. . . When I bring Miss Holland her special meal to accommodate her health needs, she tells me about her latest sewing project. . . “I have opened jars and bottles, read aloud letters. . .helped locate lost glasses, listened to stories about far-away grandkids, and called property management to get help for ants in the kitchen.” In return, she has been given thankyou notes, crumpled dollar bills to take to the church, and lots of love. “Once a week, I feed hungry people a good meal,” she wrote, “but my clients nurture me with their kindness, gratitude and friendship.”
Sandi Harsh, Director FPC’s Meals on Wheels program was established in 1976 to serve home-bound church members. It evolved into a larger program that serves any eligible home bound older adult within a defined delivery area, regardless of race, religious affiliation if any, or ability to pay. Meals go out five days a week from FPC, delivered by volunteers from several churches, Protestant and Roman Catholic, as well as some individuals from the community. When a holiday is coming up, recipients get extra food to tide them over. The drivers would have nothing to deliver without the packers, another brigade of volunteers. Each packer generally comes in one day each week to put the 55-or-so meals for the day into individual bags and load them into coolers. Kelly Williams, an elder at FPC is a packer. For her, the role is part of a family commitment. Driver Kathy Williams is her mother-in-law. Thank-yous arrive at the church, often written lovingly in shaky script. A man named Al wrote that the volunteers who bring his meals always ask about his cat. “Thank you for your kindness shown me by delivering my meals,” he said. A woman named Edna included a note with a check. “I will send something every month, as much as I can,” she wrote. “Thank you all so very much for your love and compassion. May God
keep blessing your ministry.” Director Sandi Harsh started out as a delivery volunteer. She and her husband, Wendell, were recruited as volunteers by member Ginny Wohlford when they joined FPC. When a previous director retired, Sandi stepped up. She loves watching the relationships develop that are so meaningful to everyone involved. “Knock on the door and make someone’s day,” says volunteer Carter Stalvey. “Fifteen plus years as a volunteer have enriched my life with many foster grandparents, friendships, and three toothless boyfriends. I’ve been honored to speak at their funerals, have them to my home for dinner, and watch them smile when they open the door. Volunteers find their roles so rewarding, many of them have stayed on for twenty or thirty years. Sandi’s youngest volunteers aren’t long out of the cradle. Jeannie Bell often brings her grandchildren on her rounds. The youngest is just 18 months old. “They are learning the importance of sharing, being mindful of all people, and that love is spread by the simplest of actions,” their grandmother says. Sandi’s oldest volunteer? She’s 90.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: Volunteer one day a week to make new friends and ensure that someone has healthful food. Contact Sandi Harsh at sharsh@firstpresatl.org. July

This lecture-based Sunday School series explores the lives and legacies of some of the most prominent figures in the first five books of the Old Testament, also known as the Pentateuch. Each week we will review the biblical stories associated with these ancient figures, focusing on the major themes and theologies that surface. We will also explore how these great figures have been interpreted by later readers, including the authors of the New Testament. Each week stands on its own and will be available as an audio podcast for those who cannot attend the live session.

The English Bibles that we read today are the product of a long and fascinating story. Across time and cultures, Scripture has been translated from its original Greek and Hebrew into the common language of many people groups. In English alone, there are dozens of different translations available today, from the well known KJV and NRSV to newer versions such as the Message and the CEB. How do these translations differ? What factors inform translation decisions? To what extent has the process of Bible translation shaped what the Bible means and how we interact with it? This course aims to address these and related questions about the history of the Bible in translation.
