March 6 & 13, 2011 Christ at the Center
March 6 “Moses and the Promised Land” Dear Everybody, As we conclude our winter sermon series on “Moses And The Promised March 6 & 13 George Wirth to preach Land”, the Book of Numbers, chapter 32, tells us that “none of the people who came up out of Egypt...made it into The Promised Land...except Caleb...and Joshua...for they unreservedly followed the Lord.” And reading on to Deuteronomy 34, the Bible reports that God told Moses “This is the land which I swore to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, saying ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there’. Then, Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab...” We’ll talk about all of that and more this coming Sunday, including why Moses did not make it into The Promised Land in the Old Testament account, but may have finally gotten there according to the New Testament (here’s the clue: read the Transfiguration story in Matthew 17). I look forward to seeing you in worship at 9:00 and 11:15, and please invite your family and friends to come on along!
March 9 & 13 Ash Wednesday and T h e Fi r s t Su n d a y In Lent The Lenten Season begins with Ash Wednesday on March 9, and we are looking forward to the March 9, Ash Wed. 12:00 Noon worship Connie Lee to preach service in Winship Chapel as we celebrate communion together and begin our sermon series on The Beatitudes from the Sermon On The Mount: “Blessed Are The Poor In Spirit, For Theirs Is The Kingdom of Heaven” (Matthew 5:3). That evening, we will meet for dinner with our friends from Hillside Presbyterian Church at 5:30pm, and then celebrate the Lord’s Supper once more with Rev. Connie Lee preaching and members of both congregations leading and participating in the worship service. On Sunday morning, March 13, we will gather in the sanctuary for worship and communion at 9:00 and 11:15, and the sermon is entitled “Blessed Are Those Who Mourn, For They Will Be Comforted” (Matthew 5:4.) As we continue to take this sacred journey toward Holy Week, I hope and pray that you will walk with us alongside Jesus and His first disciples, making our way to Jerusalem’s Upper Room, Calvary’s Cross and Easter’s Empty Tomb!
Faithfully Yours,
George B. Wirth

March 6, “Creation Groaning”: the Redemption of Humankind and Creation in Paul and Revelation. We will explore what Paul (especially Romans & Colossians) and Revelation have to say about the relationship of creation and humankind, both in terms of the consequences of human sin for the earth and the place humankind and creation each hold in NT models of salvation. March 13, We will focus on the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7: “On Earth as it Is in Heaven”: Implicit and Explicit Ecology in the Sermon on the Mount. This week we will look more carefully at the way Jesus talks about creation in this famous sermon. What kind of community does the Sermon on the Mount call into being? How does justice and human wholeness impact the earth?
