DID YOU KNOW? That FPC has a Women’s Transitional Center? Or that FPC provides breakfast for hundreds of homeless guests every Sunday? Or that we have a 24 hour helpline? Or that we provide mail service four days weekly to approximately thirty individuals experiencing homelessness? Or that we provide shower/foot care/barber ministry? Or that we run a Food Pantry for needy and low income individuals three days a week? Well, all of that is true, and we could use your help. Within FPC, we have members dedicated to serving God and neighbor and we would love to hear from you. Visit us on the second floor in room B216 for a guided tour of our services and let us get to share Christ with Community! Email mwandera@firstpresatl.org and get connected.
We will offer a 7-session Crossroads Job Transition Course course starting on
Thursday, April 27, @ 6 PM. It’s a results-oriented study group focused toward those who are exploring job changes and seeking God’s calling in their career choice. Mark Myette, currently serving on Session, and an experienced talent management executive, will be organizing / leading this class along with other subject matter experts. Yes, it addresses the key items that most job seekers are needing help - resume reviews / rewrites, interview skills, salary questions and job search techniques. Wait there’s more! The class will also help you assess and understand your gifts / talents, consider alternative career directions, and then ties it together with prayer and fellowship. Drop us a line at kknab@firstpresatl.org or www.xroads.eventbrite.com for more information!

ots of bad jokes floated around the church on Sunday mornings during Lent. They promoted FPC’s annual Lenten Food Drive; but hunger is no laughing matter. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoon, people needing emergency assistance— many of them parents with children—make their way to the second floor of the Smith Building to request bags of groceries. The church’s Venable Food Pantry helped 1410 families in 2016, giving out more than 14 tons of food. Each bag contains cans of tuna, green and yellow vegetables, beans with protein, hearty soups, shelf stable milk, and some choices of their own from other products on the shelves. They usually also get a pasta meal. Recipients are allowed five visits a year. Money donated by church members through designated gifts and annual pledges buys food from the Atlanta Community Food Bank and discount grocery stores. Annual food drives fill the shelves periodically, and some faithful members bring canned goods every week. Jay Middleton, 54, an Air Force veteran and former jet aircraft technician,
manages the food pantry with the help of volunteers and interns from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology. Jay, who fell on hard times himself a few years ago, developed compassion early. As a child he made sandwiches to take to a man who slept on a pile of bricks in an empty lot in his neighborhood. Later, on a California boardwalk with friends, he saw a group of boys pass by. Their clothes were filthy and their shoes were worn. The smallest one dragged a dirty blanket. “That image stuck with me,” Jay says. “When you see somebody down and out, you’ve got to help them.” Once he even bought dinner for kids who stole his lunch. Society often stereotypes homeless people as “crazy or addicted,” he says. But many are people who just had a run of bad luck, or made a bad decision, and need a hand to help them get back on their feet. “I’m sure that if the pantry saves one person from being hungry it’s worthwhile,” he says. “Especially if that person is a child.”
How to get involved:

This lecture-based Sunday School series explores the lives and legacies of some of the most prominent figures in the first five books of the Old Testament, also known as the Pentateuch. Each week we will review the biblical stories associated with these ancient figures, focusing on the major themes and theologies that surface. We will also explore how these great figures have been interpreted by later readers, including the authors of the New Testament. Each week stands on its own and will be available as an audio podcast for those who cannot attend the live session.

his year, Protestant churches around the world are celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Here at First Pres, we are commemorating this pivotal moment in church history by offering a series of educational opportunities that explores the major themes of Reformation theology and their ongoing influence in Christian faith and practice. Our Reformation 2017 series kicks off on Wednesday April 19th with a 3-week Theology Matters course called “The Five Pillars of the Reformation.” Taught by Tony Sundermeier, this course is open to the whole congregation but also serves as the pre-trip curriculum for those who are traveling on our Study Abroad trip to Switzerland, where we will be following in the footsteps of the great Reformation theologian John Calvin. The series also includes a second Theology Matters course (Thursdays, 10/5, 12, 19, 26) co-taught by Ryan Bonfiglio and Jens Korndörfer. Titled “A Mighty Fortress is Our God,” this course explores the biblical and musical background of the great hymns of the Reformation, many of which we still sing today. In the fall, we will be offering a 4-week interfaith dialogue in partnership with the Temple. This program, which includes dinner, talks, and guided conversations, will provide an opportunity for members of both congregations to think about what it means to be “Rooted in Tradition, Reformed in Perspective” in our respective theological contexts. Other offerings in the series include two Lunch and Learn Lectures (with Ryan Bonfiglio and Joel LeMon), the launch of our TheoEd Talks program, a 4-week sermon series, and a Musica Sacra Concert. More information can be found in printed brochures around the church or on the web at: https://firstpresatl.org/reformation2017. Whether you are a life-long Calvinist or new to the Presbyterian church, we invite you to take part in these educational opportunities as we explore together the legacy of the Protestant Reformation.
