November 6 & 13, 2011 Christ at the Center
November 6 Mission Sunday Through Mission, our church is blessed to be able to offer support and to share the love and hope of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to people both nearby and throughout the world. During this year’s Mission Celebration Sunday, we are looking forward to sharing with you the joy of friendships and partnerships that have been built through Mission at First Presbyterian. Our theme for the celebration is “Connect to Mission at FPC,” and it is in keeping with this that we want to call attention to those important aspects of Community, Service, Partnership, Fellowship and Love that come together to make Mission a reality at our church. And, we hope that each of you will be inspired to “connect” with the many Mission opportunities available at FPC. So please join us this Sunday, November 6, during the 9 and 11:15 worship services as your hear members of our staff and lay leaders speak about what Mission means to them and to the life of our church. Between worship services, we invite you to join us for a combined youth and adult Sunday School program in Fifield Hall. And we hope you will also come to a complimentary Celebration Luncheon at 12:15 to share fellowship and to hear an inspirational performance by our Youth Musical Ministry. Thank you for your faithful support. We look forward to seeing you.
In HIS name,
2011 Mission Council
November 13 HAPPY 400TH ANNIVERSARY TO THE KJV! Mark Noll, in his article for Christianity Today entitled “Me And Thee And The KJV: Where Would Nov. 13 - George Wirth We Be Without The to preach Most Popular English Bible Ever?” (May 2011 issue) had this to say about the 400th anniversary of the King James Version: “the immense good accomplished in and through the KJV is a marvel. When the KJV became the cultural and literary standard for the entire English-speaking world, the spiritual impact of the Bible was certainly enhanced because the scriptural message was carried far and wide...” That was and still is the case for this remarkable translation of the scriptures which most of us learned and memorized as children in Sunday School. And that will be the focus of our sermon on November 13 as we reflect on the origin of the KJV, the influence it has had on Christianity since it was first published in 1611, and how this age old translation has touched all of our lives. “Thy word is truth” says John 17:17 - so it was, so it is and so it always shall be! So please come join us for worship at 9 and 11:15 in the sanctuary, as we “listen for and hear the word of the Lord!” And I hope that you will invite your family and friends to join you as well.
Faithfully Yours,
George B. Wirth

The Theology of Old Testament Law Dr. Brent A. Strawn Associate Professor of Old Testament Candler School of Theology, Emory University Have you ever wondered about the significance of Old Testament law? Is it all outdated in light of the New Testament or are any of those laws (613 according to the rabbis) still useful and pertinent? This five week study will provide an introduction to the theological and ethical significance of Old Testament law and
will cover such items as: the narrative setting of OT law, various legal collections in the OT (including the Ten Commandments and, yes, Leviticus!), and other matters pertaining to interpreting OT law, especially the important question of the ongoing usefulness of law for Christian faith and practice. Please join us!

Yo u r P l e d g e at w o r k Mission is a fundamental part of the teachings of Jesus Christ and of the life of this church. We invite you to learn more about all of our Mission efforts at FPC and especially about the important aspects of Community, Partnership, Service and Fellowship that ‘connect’ to make mission a vibrant and meaningful part of our church and of the gospel of Jesus Christ. COMUUNITY - Through our international partnerships, FPC has a long-standing presence in countries including Brazil, Haiti, Jamaica, Kenya and Honduras as well as a developing presence in Cuba. Domestically, through our Adult and Youth Mission outreach, we work in communities like New Orleans, Joplin, St. Louis and Orlando. And through our partnerships in Atlanta, including the medical ministry at ChildSpring International, hospitality ministries at Villa International and The Atlanta Ministry for International Students (AMIS) and the Refugee Resettlement program, we are having a profound impact in our own community.
PARTNERSHIPS - Our Mission activities would not be possible without the on-going support of partner organizations who reside in the communities we visit and who continue to live and work in places long after we have left. PRECE, an educational cooperative in Brazil, the Mt. Olivet Boys Home in Jamaica, Mt Kenya Academy in Kenya and Project Homecoming in New Orleans are just a few of the many organizations that help to make our Mission activities lasting and meaningful. SERVICE - Mission is evidence of the “Gospel in Action.” As Jesus cleansed, raised, protected and healed to allow His followers to take control of their lives, so to do we try to provide care, support, labor and aid to help those in need. Our efforts include providing building and financial aid for schools and orphanages, reconstructive surgeries to hundreds of children, funding for successful
micro-finance programs, local hospitality programs for international students and housing construction and reclamation in disasterimpacted communities throughout the U.S. FELOWSHIP - Mission is as much about relationships as it is about completing work projects. The relationships we establish and cultivate, with those from other cultures and backgrounds and with our friends at First Presbyterian, stay with and nurture us well beyond our time spent on Mission. Through opportunities to work and worship side-by-side, we can see first-hand how similar we are in our shared hopes and dreams and, most importantly, in our faith in Christ and the saving grace of God. Through Mission we are often touched in ways that strengthen and empower our own faith in God. Witnessing the spirit and faith of others, who live in challenging and often dire circumstances, can be a transformative experience that shows us the power of God’s love to effect change in our lives and the lives of others. The Chimes adult sunday school A gora Room 322
In New Testament Greek, the name means “meeting place,” and we are a vibrant, conversational class that discusses a variety of topics, including Bible, theology, current events, and arts. Most of us are thirty something, and many have young children.
Berean Bible Class Reception Room
The Bereans were critical thinkers who, with study, became believers. (Acts 17:10-12). This year our theme is “What is the Bible?” It is God’s word, but it is also art, literature, and the most influential book ever written, and that is just the beginning. Will not meet Nov. 6th, but join us Nov. 13th and 20th, as David Drake presents a two part discussion of the Bible’s impact on history and history’s impact on the Bible, in the era of Constantine and during the Reformation.
Community Bible Study Room B415
On Nov. 6th, our class will join others in Fifield Hall for the Mission Celebration. On Nov. 13th, we will continue our study on the 4th fLoor.

The Emmaus Class will be studying the Gospel of Mark, using Tim Keller’s book, King’s Cross as a resource. These classes will be led by class members. All are welcome.
Faith and Life Room 218
On Nov. 6, we will join with other classes in Fifield Hall for the Mission Conference. On Nov. 13, the Rev. Sharrol Hayner will speak on “What Happens When People Pray.” Sharrol is the former Pastor for Discipleship at Peachtree Presbyterian Church, and she has now joined her husband Steve, President of Columbia Theological Seminary, in ministry at Columbia. Please join us for this very special program.
First Foundations Room 319
On November 6th we will join the Church in Fifield Hall for the Mission Conference. On November 13th Kevin Knab will be leading us in the first of a two-part series on the Creation Story and Adam and Eve.

G alatians 3:28, Room 323

Open Door Room 156
Started in 1953, the class remains committed to its initial goal: to join intelligent minds and strong faith, as one member has described the class, one does not check one’s mind at the door when one enters the class.
Ours for Today Room B308
On Nov. 6th, our class will join others in Fifield Hall for the Mission Celebration. On Nov. 13th, Mary Katherine Greene will challenge us with a Scientific Argument for Christianity.
