Blooming Brilliance: Anuja Joshi’s Journey to Revolutionize Luxury Floral Decor and Gifting in India

In the bustling streets of Mumbai, amidst the chaos and clamour, lies a sanctuary of beauty and elegance-Interflora India, spearheaded by the visionary entrepreneur Anuja Joshi. With a background in education and a successful stint running an IB school in Pune, Joshi was no stranger to bringing global best practices to the country. However, it was her passion for flowers and her desire to push her boundaries that led her to start Interflora India, a subsidiary of the 100-year-old legacy brand Interflora - The Flower Experts.

Anuja’s journey into the world of luxury floral gifting began with a bold leap of faith. Inspired by her travels abroad and captivated by the sheer variety and splendor of flowers, she envisioned bringing a similar floral experience to India, a vision that gave birth to Interflora India in 2017. As we started our conversation Anuja talked about her inspiration behind the transition from education to entrepreneurship, “Watching my father work hard to build something inspired me to do the same when I grew up. So, I quit my job and joined the family business. But I wanted to continue my father’s legacy by starting my own. So, I started reflecting on my travel experiences around the world—one thing I kept going back to was the beautiful, life-sized floral decor I saw everywhere, which didn’t exist in India at the time. So, I decided to bring that luxurious, floral lifestyle experience here. I discussed the idea with my husband, Tarun, and since Interflora India was exploring its way into India, it was a perfect marriage! She continued by adding the influence of being an educationist, “Being an educationist who set up and ran an IB school in Pune with 2000+ students for over 10 years, I have always been an advocate of bringing the best global practices to the country. I felt the urge to push my boundaries further and achieve something bigger and better, out of my comfort zone, thus Interflora happened.”

The Indian flower market was worth $2 billion but was fragmented and unorganized, with no branded player. Anuja shared the journey of founding Interflora India and her vision for revolutionizing the floral gifting and luxury décor landscape in the country, “Once I began my journey into the luxury floral industry, I realised that the entire supply chain was missing in India and we’d have to start from scratch. But that didn’t deter me. And in 2017, from a small factory space in Mahim, my entrepreneurial journey began! When we got our first order, I jumped with joy. I meticulously checked every flower, bouquet, and packaging before sending it out. After all, I didn’t want to just sell a bunch of flowers—I wanted to deliver expe-

riences. And to build on that idea, we ventured into weddings and events. Two weddings later, we bagged a huge event—that of India’s biggest business tycoon! It felt unreal. It’s been a rollercoaster since, and I’ve faced many challenges–lack of logistics, training unskilled labour, and the biggest one being, not being taken seriously as a female entrepreneur. They’d say, ‘Get your husband, we’ll talk to him’. But you know what I’d do? I’d simply smile and showcase my work–the moment they’d lay eyes on it, they’d be silenced. And I think that determination to prove myself has borne fruit—in 5 years, we’ve expanded to 25 cities across India.” She added with pride.

As we are in the light of International Women’s Day, Anuja a recipient of the ‘Woman Entrepreneur of The Year’ award, shared her thoughts on the uniqueness of her brand, “I took upon the challenge of transforming the Indian Flower Market with its revolutionary practices with Interflora. Today, it has chalked out a niche for itself through sourcing, designing, and decorating. But what continues to drive the brand towards excellence is the focus on customer experience. We offer bespoke floral assortments, luxury hampers, corporate gifting solutions, and design & decor solutions for weddings, events & hotels. Interflora is a fast-paced fashion label that offers a unique floral experience through its in-house design team. They study global floral trends and colours to curate a mesmerizing catalogue of gifting options. Each floral assortment comes with a five-day freshness guarantee, a care guide, and special flower food to maintain water pH balance. Interflora delivers farm-fresh handcrafted bouquets in 4 hours across 25 cities, ensuring they match the website. The brand also focuses on innovation and global standards in floral sourcing, design, and décor.”

Over the years, Interflora India has carved a niche for itself in the luxury floral landscape, creating immaculate decor concepts for celebrities and high-profile events. From Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor’s intimate wedding to extravagant affairs for Kiara Advani and Sidharth Malhotra, Interflora has left an indelible mark on the Indian gifting and decor scene. “Having been entrenched in the online market for an extensive period, our primary avenue for growth involves establishing a physical presence in major metro cities. By opening outlets, we aim to gauge customer response and provide a convenient option for on-the-go flower purchases. Simultaneously, our international reach extends to Dubai through a successful collaboration with IGP, while domestically in India, our focus is on penetrating smaller cities. This

expansion involves the setup of 200 dark stores, strategically positioning us for broader market coverage and accessibility “

But Anuja’s vision extends beyond mere aesthetics. My journey into mountaineering began at the very young age of 16 when I scaled the ﬁrst Kailash – the Adi Kailash in Uttarakhand – which is located at a height of 14,750 feet. Thanks to my mother, Radhika Talati. She's been scaling the Himalayas for over a decade now, and her passion for adventure and exploration deeply inﬂuenced me. Growing up, I was captivated by her stories of the mountains and the sense of freedom and adventure they embodied. So, when the opportunity arose for me to join her on a pilgrimage to the Himalayas, I jumped at the chance.” She answered with utmost enthusiasm.

Goutami shared her experiences while scaling the Kailash peaks and Mount Kilimanjaro, “Scaling the Kailash peaks was a profound spiritual journey for me. Each summit oﬀered its unique challenges and rewards, both physically and spiritually. From the rugged terrain of Adi Kailash to the sacred slopes of Mansarovar, each peak left an indelible mark on my soul. And Mount Kilimanjaro, being the highest peak in Africa, presented its own set of challenges. It was in 2014 and I was 17 years old, but with determination and perseverance able to reach the summit and experience the awe-inspiring beauty of the African continent from above.”

BNurturing a Love for Stories: Bhakti is a former senior ﬁnance executive with 20-plus years of experience in private banking in global ﬁrms such as J Safra Sarasin, ING Asia, and Citigroup. We asked her about the spark of her passion for storytelling, and she joyously said, “The seeds of storytelling were sown during my childhood. Bhagwan, my guardian, and our gentle housekeeper, played a pivotal role in shaping my

imagination. He used to captivate me with tales from Hindu mythology, transporting me to a world of vibrant gods and goddesses, epic battles, and profound lessons. Those stories awakened a curiosity, a yearning to understand the rich tapestry of my cultural heritage.”

Bhakti enjoyed banking, but always longed to pursue something more meaningful with her life. But she could not find that for a few years. She says with enthusiasm, “I finally had my eureka moment in December 2010. The Indian festival of colours ‘Holi’ was around the corner. I was looking for a good book to explain the festival to my older son who was two years old then. I couldn’t find anything that I liked and got an idea to write one myself! I decided to make it a series and called it ‘Amma Tell Me’ (‘Amma’ means mother).” She talked about her return to storytelling.

From Seed to Series: The Birth of "Amma Tell Me", Bhakti self-published the books in the ‘Amma Tell Me’ series by establishing Anjana Publishing, named after the mother of her favourite Hindu deity, Hanuman. “Despite the challenges, I was determined to share these stories with the world. As the series gained traction, I expanded distribution channels beyond

Amazon, reaching bookshelves in Hong Kong and major Indian cities, all while juggling my responsibilities in private banking and raising my two sons. The "Amma Tell Me” Series began as a passion project, born out of a desire to share the magic of Hindu mythology with my sons. As the series grew in popularity, I received an offer from Puffin Books, a subsidiary of Penguin Random House India, to publish another series called "Amma Take Me," a travelogue of a mother and her two children to monuments of different faiths and historical significance in India for ages 9+. The two series have 18 published titles between them. ” Bhakti shared how she navigated the challenges of self-publishing and the evolution of her two prominent story series.

A Multifaceted Life in Full Bloom Bhakti has been speaking at literary festivals in India, Singapore, and Hong Kong. She talked about the benefits, “Literary festivals are vibrant spaces for exchanging ideas, celebrating the written word, and are essential for fostering cultural exchange and promoting a love for literature globally. Contributing to the South China Morning Post allows me to delve into fascinating themes beyond mythology and culture. I have completed around 100 articles and explored topics like health and fitness, offering readers insights into living a well-balanced life. Additionally, I've had the opportunity to interview individuals who have overcome adversity, sharing their inspirational stories and encouraging resilience.”

We understand that stories have power and that you are now assisting individuals in creating their tales. “Focusing on the resilience of ordinary people in the face of adversity, I was amazed at their strength and also realised that many people didn't know how to overcome their challenges. This led me to become an executive coach (ICF-ACC) and help people shape their narratives. I came across many more who simply didn’t know how to overcome life’s challenges. That’s when I realized that I wanted to

do more than just write people’s stories, I wanted to go a step further to help them shape their narratives. So, I trained and now engage in partnerships with clients globally."

“My love for books led me to study the practice of Bibliotherapy and I am a newly minted bibliotherapist. Bibliotherapy is reading books to treat life’s ailments that date back over two thousand years. We read stories to restore, heal, and even challenge ourselves. Reading the right book at the right time can change your life. But with millions of titles out there, where do you begin? That’s where a bibliotherapist comes in. For clients who sign up for a session, I send them a questionnaire asking them about their reading habits and preferences, what is happening in their lives currently, what are they struggling with, what is bothering them, and any major life changes that they are going through. After that I have an hour-long meeting with them, online or in person understand them better. After a week, I send them a ‘reading prescription’, with a list of curated books to read. I aim to help people ﬁnd solace, hope, and a friend in a book.” She explained about bibliotherapy.

Bhakti was nominated for the Zubin Foundation Diversity List 2020 to serve on the Government’s advisory committee and shortlisted as one of the three finalists of the American Chamber of Commerce Women of Influence Award in Master of Arts 2021 category, which speaks volumes about her contributions. Debahuty Bora is a wonderful example of how to combine business acumen with creative flare in an era where passion and career collide. She is evidence of the power of pursuing your passions alongside your career. As we started our conversation, she gave more insights about her background and upbringing, “I grew up in a quaint town called Duliajan in Assam, renowned for its association with the oil industry and surrounded by lush greenery and a vibrant tapestry of art and culture. My mother, an athlete and skilled artist, instilled in me a love for creativity, whether it be crafting outfits from scratch or creating beautiful fabric paintings. My creative inclinations are a blend of my mother’s ingenuity and my father’s fervour for art and culture.” Throughout her childhood, Debahuty gravitated towards the arts and would often craft handmade gifts. Debahuty’s childhood was a canvas of inspiration. “When we moved to Delhi due to my father’s work, I delved into the domain of Human Resources, driven by a deep passion for people, organizational strategies, and talent management. Art has always been my fervour, something I am deeply passionate about. It serves as my stress reliever, and I find balance by nurturing both my artistic pursuits and my professional endeavors.”

While her professional life flourished, a creative undercurrent always ran through Bora’s life. She shared her experience of starting her clothing brand, “The idea for her clothing brand, Piply, was sparked by a friend in Mumbai. The label aimed to avoid bulk production and focus on a few pieces per collection. The label was popular due to its Ikat fabric and simple yet elegant designs. The label continued until when I had to move to Singapore. Despite my challenges of managing the entire label from fabric sourcing to design, to overseeing tailors and organizing photoshoots, the label gained popularity. The label’s success was only due to the support of my friends & family. With no formal training in fashion, seeing the label grow

instilled in me immense confidence” She said with pride.

“I faced challenges in balancing HR work and art. One of the most challenging was doing the website work and putting up everything on the website. I used to have a social media team at one point, but somehow I felt that the aesthetic was not matching what they were doing in terms of my media post, and what I wanted out of it was very different, leading to me handling my social media page independently.” She spoke.

Debahuty also ventured into the world of handmade Amigurumi toys. She revealed the spark for creative pursuit, “I have always been fascinated by crochet and began learning during COVID-19 through YouTube and online courses, and made blankets, sweaters, and bags. It was only when a friend suggested I make a toy for her twins that I tried making Amigurumi toys, and since then, I have been hooked on creating them. I find it very fascinating. I follow patterns to create these toys, which take me around three to four days to complete.”

Like every entrepreneur, Debahuty also faced a lot of difficulties in managing her label and with her Amigurumi toys brand, Lony’s Moonchild. “People often underestimate the effort and value of handmade toy creations. I initially sold toys at low prices, but after researching, I raised the cost. People say that it’s expensive, but they don’t understand what effort goes into making one toy and also the material cost.”

Debahuty’s Amigurumi toys set themselves apart from other gifts due to their exceptional uniqueness. When asked about what makes her toys and clothing line stand out, she emphasized, “These toys are meticulously crafted by hand, using 100% cotton yarns to ensure they are safe and gentle for children to play with, avoiding any potential irritations. As for my clothing line, Piply, it distin-

guishes itself through a strong focus on Ikat fabric and minimalistic designs, an area that only a few Indian labels prioritize. I firmly believe that fashion doesn’t have to be complicated. Therefore, I concentrate on creating simple silhouettes and everyday designs for women, with a strong emphasis on minimizing waste. I transform leftover fabrics into various items like hairbands, bed sheets, and pillow covers to promote sustainable practices.” This approach not only promotes sustainability but also the idea of upcycling and reducing waste. Debahuty added, “I strongly believe in recycling and upcycling to minimize waste. I have donated fabrics to those in need, who have utilized them to create garments for the underprivileged.” Demonstrating her unwavering commitment to sustainability and reducing wastage, she takes immense pride in her efforts.

Debahuty was raised in a small family of just two individuals, herself and her sister. In this household, they were consistently encouraged to be financially independent and to excel in all aspects of life. They were taught that they could achieve anything and that there were no limitations based on their gender. Debahuty’s family, particularly the women in her extended family, serve as exemplary figures in this regard, achieving remarkable success in their chosen fields. This upbringing fostered an environment where gender equality was embraced and female empowerment was encouraged, leading to the remarkable accomplishments of the women in her family.

Debahuty is getting ready to make her move to Qatar and embarking on a new artistic venture. As we start our conversation, Harsha delves straight into the philosophy of Renaissance Souls stating, “Unlike the popular myth that we must all identify and pursue one single profession, there have historically been people like Leonardo DaVinci who have been many thingspainter, sculptor, creator of the ﬁrst design of a working airplane and more. The reason I share this is I have struggled all my life to be one thing until I discovered the concept of Renaissance Souls- people who are inclined and probably good at multiple interests and professions!”

Having given this context she continues, “I was always a straight-A student, but I never felt the need to stick to one path. I shifted from Science to get a graduate degree in media and communications while pursuing multiple side hustles as a voice-over artist, Latin American dance teacher, corporate event emcee, and more. I moved again from media to management when I pursued an MBA with a specialization in HR. I had stints in Infosys and an executive search firm but never really felt fulfilled. It wasn't until I started working as a freelance content writer for a Dubai-based event management company that I found my calling. Together with the founder, we launched some of the most sought-after business conferences in Dubai and across the world. I flourished when I was given the autonomy to run the show like an entrepreneur.” Through these dynamic years, what stayed consistent was Harsha’s drive to keep learning and upskilling. She pursued courses in

marketing and leadership from Copenhagen Business School which became a milestone in broadening her perspective. A ﬁrm believer in constantly keeping up with changing times, she pursued a brief course in Digital Marketing from IIM- Bangalore which became instrumental in helping her shape the brand narratives.

As she looks back, she thinks all these years were a serendipitous preparation for the job she would end up in- Communications & Marketing Director at Collins Wardrobes and Kitchens. She lights up as she shares the

prestigious history of Collins, “My father, Anil Agarwal, along with his brother Sunil Agrawal co-founded Collins, a hardware business, in 1986, and expanded it across 25 countries. They were dreamers, risk-takers, and achievers who changed the face of the hardware industry in India. Five years ago, they decided to diversify into modular kitchens and wardrobes which was being led by the second generation, primarily by my brother until I got a call from my father. He simply stated I had spent enough time working outside and it was time to return home. That was that and as I wrapped my tenure as the Event Director, I parallely joined Collins Kitchens and Wardrobes in June 2023.”

Bubbling with visible pride and enthusiasm she says, “I lead the Collins Kitchens and Wardrobes vertical along with my brother. We have a massive experience center in Mumbai and channel partners across Jodhpur, Chennai, and Hyderabad. We are a family-owned business and our vision is to serve families that associate with us in any capacity!” Elaborating on how they back this vision, she explains, “Furniture is not just about how it looks on the outside. What makes for exceptional furniture, like any great design, is the engineering that backs it. We take phenomenal pleasure in exporting only the best-in-class specs across the world which are then customised completely in our 120,000 sq ft factory. It’s like combining the best of Europe with a diverse Indian palette. We don’t stop there- we prototype every design and run stringent quality checks before any design is approved for market use. These internal processes may not be visible to an architect or an end customer but it’s this obsession that allows us to deliver a great product and a seamless installation experience.”

On probing how she contributes to the business, she exclaims, “One of my key roles is to bring some method to the madness. To set up simple systems and processes that allow us to scale at the speed that we want to. Besides that, my brother and I have a 5-year game plan that looks as exciting as it’s challenging. We are pushing the envelope on design, we are collaborating with tech to ﬁnd solutions to massive challenges commonly faced by the design community, we are onboarding architects with whom we have natural synergy

and we are collaborating with the right kind of entrepreneurs in strategic markets to achieve our ambitious goals.”

When asked about the difficulties she has faced so far, she says, “I have changed so many industries that I have become comfortable with having the mindset of a beginner. I am excited about learning the technical details, the functioning of a new industry, and the challenge of creating a meaningful community in a different space. Besides, while every industry may have specifics, some principles transcend lifeeventually, it’s all about finding the right people, fostering a sense of community towards a common goal, and having great fun along the way.”

In her concluding remarks, she says, “The world is shifting from needing experts to needing “jack of all trades.” It’s an exciting time for personalities with different interests to flourish. I believe that exposure to different industries allows me to bring divergent thinking to the table and an innate comfort in trusting my gut. Both of which are important to take calculative risks and unconventional paths.”

When asked for advice, she circles back to philosophy, “I think our greatest inheritance is not this business. But the courage to dream. The willingness to look at life as a long-term journey that is bound to have speedbumps but they are just that. A little punctuation in a long story that we get to write! So have faith- in yourself and the universe. Find people that fuel life with purpose and joy. And then go on one hell of an adventure.”
