Our commercial sector is expanding rapidly with over 120 staff working across the UK. We are looking to recruit the most innovative and personable graduates to join our business at this exciting time. James Rigby, Divisional Managing Partner - Commercial Property Management

Fisher German has a fast growing commercial team and now numbers 120 across the UK, with offices from Glasgow to Southampton. The firm is looking to expand this sector further and is looking to recruit the brightest and most ambitious graduates to assist in realising our ambitions.

We are different to the big multinational firms, as we are generally located on the edge of major conurbations looking inwards. We value accessibility to our clients and the assets upon which we advise. However, there is the same expertise, level of support and training you would expect from a major practice. Our client list may surprise you and includes many ‘blue chip’ property companies, asset managers and funds.

If you join Fisher German’s Commercial Sector, before long, you will have significant responsibility and exposure to a wide range of property types. This may be sooner than you would expect, however, if you have the ability, we will ensure that you work on projects to match your skills.

We are a friendly company and have a lot of firmwide social events, giving the opportunity to mix with other graduates across the firm. We also encourage our graduates to engage fully with the wider property community, including, for example, The Industrial Agents Society and The Investment Property Forum.

Fisher German is a great alternative to those not wanting to follow the well-trodden route to the multi-national firms. Sometimes, it is ‘better to take the path less followed’.

12 | FISHER GERMAN GRADUATE BROCHURE 2021/22

Working in our Planning team you could be advising on: • G eneral Practice – feasibility and strategy advice, planning applications and appeals, listed building consent and resolution of enforcement issues • D evelopment and Planning – site appraisals, neighbourhood planning, public consultation and community engagement, strategy formulation, plan promotion and housing land supply • I nfrastructure and Sustainable Energy – planning applications and appeals, scheduled ancient monument consent, discharge of conditions and environmental impact assessments

Before joining Fisher German, I undertook a Master’s Degree in International Planning and Sustainable Development at the University of Westminster. I started working for Fisher German in September 2019 as a member of the General Practice Planning team in the Ashby office. When I first started my role my responsibilities were to assist my line manager and senior colleagues with planning appraisals, attending site visits and preparation of documents to support planning applications. As time went on and my experience grew I was encouraged to take ownership of my own projects and manage them from inception through the planning process. This can be advising on planning strategy, site meetings, preparation of various types of planning applications, representing clients at planning committees and planning appeals. It is a pleasure to work for Fisher German, from my first day I have been welcomed and made to feel like a valuable member of the team whose ideas and contributions are appreciated.

Graduates and Placements play an important role across all of our planning teams. At Fisher German our Planning Graduates work on a wide variety of projects across a range of sectors - no two days are the same! Our Graduates have autonomy over their projects from a very early stage in their career at FG. These factors and working in great teams are consistently reported as to why they enjoy working for FG. Liberty Stones, Head of Planning

Development We work on residential, mixed use, commercial and retail schemes, which involves formulating site specific strategies for the promotion of land, whether this is progressing planning applications for short term opportunities or making representations to emerging local plans for the longer term. The team project manages consultants as well as facilitating public consultations with the community and key stakeholders.

Utilities The Utilities planners work on infrastructure projects for the water, oil, electricity, gas and minerals sectors across the country. Our work involves devising robust strategies to secure the most time and cost effective solutions to delivering planning compliance for complex projects. We advise on permitted development rights and compliance with Environmental Impact Assessment regulations. We have a high caseload of planning applications, involving close liaison with engineers, consultants and planning authorities.

General Practice The teams, based in Ashby, Bedford, Worcester and Chester, work on a very diverse range of planning projects providing advice to traditional farming and estate clients, along with businesses and private individuals. We assess the feasibility of small projects through to full estate reviews. The teams regularly resolve enforcement issues, deal with listed building applications, develop schemes with the design team and work closely with environmental consultants, particularly ecologists.

Our team is split into three areas: Development, Utilities and General Practice, serving private, public and corporate clients.

Meet our colleagues I joined Fisher German in Summer 2020, working as part of the Infrastructure Services division located at the Bedford Office. Previously, I undertook two summer placements at the Fisher German’s Market Harborough and Ashby Offices which provided an excellent insight into the business and experience of the wider surveying industry. My day to day work involves liaising with a diverse range of stakeholders to deliver solutions on behalf of a wide range of utility clients. This typically includes engaging with affected parties to discuss planned works, arranging access, and negotiating compensation following completion.

William Davies Graduate Surveyor

By providing this broad range of work, and actively promoting engagement across all levels of the business, I have found that Fisher German provide a number of excellent opportunities to their graduates including exceptional support through the APC process.

Having stemmed from farming roots, a career in the rural profession has always been an aspiration of mine. I completed an RICS accredited degree at Harper Adams University in Summer 2020 and began my graduate role at Fisher German’s Market Harborough office shortly after. My role comprises a variety of rural professional work, but mainly involves the day-to-day management of several mixed portfolio estates across Leicestershire and its surrounding counties. Typical tasks include dealing with residential, agricultural and commercial tenancy matters, managing property improvements, inspections and re-lettings, undertaking rent reviews, organising refurbishments and maintaining statutory compliance. Fisher German have a designated graduate team who guide you through the APC process and offer individual guidance and support as needed. The structured training programme offers regular progress meetings with your APC mentor, counsellor and doctors. Speaking from personal experience, they have gone above and beyond to ensure I am in the best position possible to succeed and develop professionally.

I started my placement with Fisher German in September 2020 and have absolutely loved my experience so far. My team made me feel so welcome, even whilst working apart from many of them due to COVID-19. I feel my placement has really helped me put what I have learned in a classroom at university in to practice, an experience I think is really going to benefit me going into the final year of my degree.

Sophie Ward

Day to day I work mainly for one client, Exolum Pipeline Systems Ltd, who own and operate a 2000km network of oil pipelines. It has been a learning curve as this is a sector I had absolutely no experience with before starting, however I am really enjoying the challenge. I particularly enjoy meeting all of the landowners and seeing work which I have done in the office be put into practice.

Placement Student

The interviews that I attended with Fisher German were conducted by some of the most senior partners, including the managing partner, which further highlighted their commitment to finding the right people even at such an early stage of the career path. I now work as a Graduate Rural surveyor in the Bedford office. Day to day work consists of managing an estate in the local area, comprising of houses, offices and farms. I am also involved in valuing properties and other advisory matters. I studied Biology at the University of Exeter and I am therefore currently completing a Masters course to enable me to qualify as a surveyor via the usual APC route. The graduate programme is certainly comprehensive and enjoyable, and allows for flexibility, which is a bonus when completing the masters alongside.

Meet your graduate team

I graduated with a BA (Hons) degree in English Literature from the University of Exeter, and then completed an MSc in Rural Land Management at the Royal Agricultural University. After leaving there, I joined Fisher German in 2010 as a graduate surveyor in the Banbury office. Over ten years later, I have moved from the Rural sector to Infrastructure Services, alongside progressing from graduate to Partner, now leading a team of 20 working for national clients in the water, electricity and gas sectors. I have sat on the graduate team since 2015 and now head up graduate recruitment, engaging with colleges and universities to find the future Partners of Fisher German.

Ruth Ofield MRICS FAAV Partner Grad Team Role: Recruitment Lead and Mock APC Chair

I joined FG at the start of 2021 as Early Careers Talent Advisor. From recruitment to coordinating training events and programmes, I am the face of FG for anything early careers related. I am genuinely passionate about helping people get the best start in their career and you may well see me get a bit emotional when programmes end or results get announced. I am very excited to be working for a company that believes so much and invests so heavily in their early careers programme. The structured programme works like a well-oiled machine to ensure success and the best experience for all our grads, placements and apprentices. However, we’re not resting on our laurels, and we’re continuously seeking to improve and innovate in order to stay ahead of the game.

Marie-Ange Ehrhart, Early Careers Talent Advisor Grad Team Role: Recruitment and Training Support

On graduating from Harper Adams, I joined Fisher German in 2013 as a Graduate Surveyor, as part of the Infrastructure Services sector, where I qualified as a Chartered Surveyor. In 2015, I moved to the Rural sector, I am now an Associate Director based in the Doncaster office. My current role is diverse, including general professional practice instructions, valuations and estate management for both traditional and corporate clients, I also oversee Farm Machinery Auctions for Fisher German. As part of my role, I assist with graduate and placement recruitment as well as working closely with the APC team during the internal mock APC process.

Having joined Fisher German in 2012, my day to day work has evolved considerably and I am lucky enough to work on large utility contracts whilst also managing a traditional rural estate. In addition, I am involved with Fisher German’s Mock APC process and examination which is very rewarding and have taken over the organisation of the three annual graduate training days. These days are invaluable to help support candidates through the APC process at the same time as offering practical examination and professional experience.

Tiffany Salmon MRICS FAAV, Associate Director Grad Team Role: Training and Mock APC Assessment

I joined Fisher German in 2016 following a previous career as a geologist in the oil and gas industry. Fisher German kindly sponsored through the part-time REALM course at Harper Adams University which I completed whilst working as a graduate surveyor in the Rural Team from Ashby de la Zouch. I graduated from Harper Adams in 2018, passing my APC and CAAV exams a couple of months later. I continue to work in the Rural Team where my time is split between corporate estate management and mineral surveying. In the Graduate Team, my role is to oversee the APC Doctors within the firm – a form of mentoring scheme which provides APC support to graduates outside of their immediate teams.

I graduated from the RAU in 2016 following completion of a summer placement with Fisher German in the summer of 2015. I joined the Ashby office where I went on to pass my CAAV exams in 2017 and APC in 2018. I now work in the Worcester office rural team doing predominantly rural estate management. Within the Graduate Team, my role is to oversee and manage the mock APC assessments. This involves everything from arranging dates, selecting assessors and overseeing assessment days. The mock assessment process is there to ensure that you, as a candidate, are ready and prepared to undertake the RICS assessment and my role is to ensure this process is as smooth running and organised as possible for everyone involved.

FISHER GERMAN GRADUATE BROCHURE 2021/22 | 23

Final word

from our Managing Partner, Andrew Bridge I started my career with Fisher German as a graduate surveyor back in July 1995, so when we talk about our graduates today, it’s a subject very close to my heart! Working at Fisher German has provided me with such a breadth of experience. After starting out in estate management, I moved into utilities & infrastructure work before being appointed Chief Operating Officer in 2014, and then Managing Partner in April 2019. I am extremely proud of the organisation we are today and the way we have handled challenges over the years, including an economic downturn and a global pandemic; we always emerge stronger and even more committed to invest in our colleagues and service our clients to the best of our abilities.

At Fisher German, we have personality. Despite our growth, we have maintained a close-knit culture where colleagues can work with peers at all levels, get involved in exciting projects across the UK and really contribute to our success. Andrew Bridge Managing Partner

Growth like ours doesn’t happen by accident. Our success can be traced to the right strategic direction, excellent financial management and above all having outstanding people, in the right roles, and allowing them to be the best possible version of themselves across the whole organisation. For us, it is about finding people who have a passion for their chosen career and want to continue developing both professionally and personally. Don’t for a minute think that we are looking to recruit clones or robots - we would not be the entrepreneurial and pioneering firm we are today, if we did! We’re looking for people who share our values, think outside of the box and inspire others to be the best they can be.

At Fisher German, we have personality. Despite our growth, we have maintained a close-knit culture where colleagues can work with peers at all levels, get involved in exciting projects across the UK and really contribute to our success. We are a great firm with a long history and exciting future growth plans; we are proud of our past and our present, and we work hard to do it justice. We recognise that we have a unique opportunity to make a significant and positive impact on challenges that face society today, something we can achieve through the diverse range of property consultancy services that we provide, from sustainable energy advice and land diversification, through to the safe management of the UK’s utility assets. We are trusted business advisers as well as surveyors, planners and technicians, and we use our expertise to help our clients achieve what they want and create opportunities they didn’t know existed. We want to make a genuine contribution to making tomorrow a better place – to do this, we need the support of people who are passionate about making a difference and truly believe in the benefits of what we do. Above everything, we recognise that everyone is unique and that you have choices. I would strongly recommend you do as much research as possible to find the right organisation for you and wish you all the best in your next steps, whether you pursue a career at Fisher German or elsewhere.

All Chartered Surveyor firms are not the same; it is so very important to find the right firm for you. Build a career with a firm you love and you will never work a day in your life!
