joined us in 2017 to engage in cultural experiences and community events.

Our intent is to grow our programming to provide participants with access to the arts and humanities so that their influence becomes more deeply interwoven into the cultural and economic fabric of communities within our region and beyond.

Dear Friends, Each year, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts continues our focus on historic preservation and interpretation, providing cultural experiences for young and old, accessibility to the arts, and partnering with others in the community for a better tomorrow. In 2017, during a time of heated politics, we encouraged civic dialogues; in a time of protests, we brought peace and understanding; in moments of hate, we focused on love. We embrace our heritage and the values that emerged from the ’60s now more than ever. Because of your support we continued to bring essential arts and humanities programs to our community. We presented world-class musicians on our stages. Our museum and newly recognized National Historic Register site drew people from around the world. With the support of our friends, donors, fans, and sponsors, it was one of our most successful years to date. More than 265,000 visitors came to our campus‌ to spend time together, to make memories, to learn something new, to take a break from their busy lives, and to contribute positively to the world around them. We have an extraordinary community. One that continues to get better each day. Together with your support, we will continue doing our part to develop and support a healthy, vibrant, and equitable county, a driver of economic prosperity, a bridge between generations, a creator of empathy, and a venue for freedom of speech, healing, and hope. Thank you for working with us. Thank you for supporting the humanities in our community, and thank you for believing in Bethel Woods and the transformative power of the arts.

Sincerely,

Darlene Fedun Darlene Fedun

BETHEL WOODS CENTER FOR THE ARTS

Join us on a journey... As you enter Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, you are greeted by a sign post marking the site’s placement on the National Register of Historic Places. On July 1, we celebrated this designation during our free community day, The Gathering at Bethel Woods, by unveiling the historical marker. Woodstock festival organizers were on hand for the event recalling the festival as “a great example of community… and giving peace a chance.” Today, nearly five decades later, Max Yasgur’s alfalfa field is still a place to gather for shared experiences of entertainment, heritage, learning, and community.

PRESERVING HISTORY AND ENHANCING THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE With generous financial help from the A. Lindsay and Olive B. O’Connor Foundation and others, work began last year to recreate the Bindy Bazaar trails where vendor booths of the 1969 Woodstock festival once stood. The O’Connor Foundation has been a strong supporter of our preservation work. The foundation, which distributes $3 million in grants yearly, focuses on Delaware and adjacent counties. Foundation Chairman, Bob Bishop, firmly believes that in rural places such as ours, preserving historic sites can boost communities and in his words:

“What you’ve done with preservation – and not just that, but with arts and education – is fantastic… You’ve got a world-class venue here.” PHOTO © BARON WOLMAN

Thank you to all who support our preservation work including: New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation; the A. Lindsay and Olive B. O’Connor Foundation; Robyn Gerry; the John J. & Regina B. Heldrich Foundation; the Grillo family; and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. R E P O RT TO T H E C O M M U N I T Y

The Museum at Bethel Woods tells the in-depth story of the ’60s societal evolution, culminating in the Woodstock festival. It connects visitors to the defining experiences in art, music, and politics that spawned a generation.

engagement through its series of special exhibitions, outdoor sculpture installations, and educational and informative programming. In 2017 “Love for Sale: The Commercialization of the Counterculture” was on display in our Special Exhibit Gallery. Using the extensive collection of Atlanta-based writer and collector Michael Stern, the exhibit illustrated the influence of counterculture on American pop culture and commerce. Set in a model 1970 suburban home, the exhibition showed how “peace, love and free expression” became commonplace in living rooms, dining rooms, and children’s rooms across America. Our Crossroads Gallery featured a presentation of music festival posters and commemorations of the 50th anniversaries of Rolling Stone magazine and the musical Hair. Several of Glenn Zweygardt’s installations graced the plaza entrance area. 8

A WAR VETERAN DONATES HIS VIETNAM HELMET Last May, Marion Edward Foddrill donated his Vietnam War

Troops used their helmets to hold camouflage, cigarettes,

Marion Foddrill lived both sides of the ’60s culture divide. He grew up around the world in a conservative military family and was exposed to the counterculture during his summer visits to Mountainville, NY, including watching the traffic back up on the New York State Thruway during the 1969 Woodstock festival.

and gun oil. Some wrote words of strength and inspiration on their helmets, and still others drew peace signs on theirs. “My helmet became more than a souvenir for me. It tells a lot of stories. There’s people who wore it before me… in the Vietnam War. All my friends that I knew then. It’s like a memorial to all of them. And now it’s here. At Woodstock. It’s a long strange trip. You know?”

That same year Mr. Foddrill joined the Navy as an aircraft navigator and was stationed at the Da Nang air base in Vietnam, where he adopted the counterculture lifestyle of many of those who served there. Upon arrival he was ordered to pick up a flak jacket and helmet from those lying around on the ground. They served him well during many a bombing raid including the “friendly fire” incident during which the Air Force mistakenly dropped 34 500-pound bombs on the base. Soldiers were not normally allowed to bring military gear home. However, his helmet was mistakenly placed in his duffle by an inspector. Mr. Foddrill kept it, not knowing until many years later how rare it was. 10

In 2017 the Collections Committee approved the accession of

16 ITEMS

into The Museum’s permanent collection. These items were acquired from 9 DONORS and through 7 PURCHASES.

To date, 168 people have donated 1,846 items to the Permanent Collection, with additional materials placed in our reference and education collections. Our long-term goal is to establish The Museum as a research center in the areas of 1960s popular culture, social history, and music. These artifacts help us share the history with a new generation. In addition to admission revenue, we are grateful to members, donors, and other organizations that have invested generously. We are particularly grateful to The Kaplan Family Foundation, The National Trust for Historic Preservation, the A. Lindsay and Olive B. O’Connor Foundation, The William G. Pomeroy Foundation, The New York State Council on the Arts, the John N. Blackman Sr. Foundation, Stewarts Shops, Humanities NY, New Music USA, and TD Charitable Foundation for their 2017 support.

LOOKING AHEAD: THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF WOODSTOCK Last spring, committees were formed and many Bethel Woods departments collaborated on potential projects to commemorate the anniversary throughout the entire year of 2019. We’re busily planning a full range of programs and activities to celebrate the anniversary including special events, exhibits, enhancements to our interpretation of the historic site, concerts, speakers, and lectures. where we learn from our past... and come together as a community to celebrate it in the Event Gallery.

Under the direction of our Arts and Humanities team, we present activity-based experiences connecting generations through artistic expression. For example E3: Engage. Experience. Explore. gathered student participants from Liberty and Monticello high schools last spring to discuss how they share similar challenges and aspirations with each other.

WOODSTALK: LIVE! SPARKS CONVERSATION AND CREATIVITY In 2017 we presented ten WoodsTalk: Live! events that attracted over 500 attendees and included everything from a fireside chat to a comedy workshop. The goal of the series is to spark critical thinking about the past and present while encouraging participants to engage in their communities.

Working in collaboration with Music in Common—a non-profit organization empowering diverse cultures and faiths to discover connections through music—students chose the theme “Accepting Diversity,” and over a five-day period, wrote a song, created visual art, and produced a video entitled “We all Bleed Red.”

“I’m a human being. I have feelings like you. I accept who you are, can you accept me too?”

GATHERING TO TACKLE THE GROWING DRUG EPIDEMIC Part of our commitment to our community includes providing a place where people can come together in civil dialogue to seek common ground and solutions. Last October, we gathered with elected officials, public health experts, law enforcement agencies, faith-based organiza tions and community groups to host the day-long conference and discussion called “Local Solutions to a National Opioid Crisis: Prescription Drugs and Heroin.”

FLICKS AND MOONLIT MOVIE MONDAYS PROVIDE FUN AND SHARED EXPERIENCES IN THE MUSEUM THEATER AND ON THE TERRACE STAGE Some of 2017’s movies included: O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Monterey Pop, Dirty Dancing, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Monty Python and The Holy Grail, Hidden Figures, The Shining, and others. 12

FUNDRAISING TO SUPPORT OUR MISSION GIVING FOR THE LOVE OF MUSIC… AND MORE Rowley is a name synonymous with the good that comes from a particularly focused brand of philanthropy. The impact of giving by Rich Rowley and Marianne Murray as a couple can be seen throughout the region in healthcare, education, and the arts. But it’s not just what they give, it’s what they do. When it comes to Bethel Woods, Rich has always given his time to our annual Wine Pairing Dinner and provided needed financial support for the annual event. In 2018, he will serve as the event’s chairman. As our biggest fundraising event, the dinner is an effort that requires hours of planning and fine-tuning; the wine, the food, the showcase of silent and live auction items. programs for young people and the community offered at Bethel Woods as well as the impact and importance of our museum and preservation of the historic site. For many, the dinner is also a time to appreciate the vision of Bethel Woods. Rich’s connection to Bethel Woods goes back to his teenage years, when his parents refused to allow his younger self to make the journey to a certain concert in Bethel, NY, in August 1969. And yet, the 15-year-old’s belief in the power of music only grew. Once Bethel Woods came into existence, complete with its level of quality and its impact, Rich became hooked.

COMMEMORATIVE PAVERS TO MARK THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY A two-year-long Woodstock 50th Anniversary Commemorative Paver Campaign was launched with a goal to install a minimum of 1,969 pavers by the end of 2019. The Pavers are available for $269 each and feature a limited-edition engraved peace sign not available after 2019. Some of the funds raised will support future preservation projects including the restoration of the Woodstock stage area and creation of a scenic interpretative outlook at the top of the field.

Mission-based programs would not be possible without our dedicated and talented teaching artists, who take an active role in shaping and inspiring our creative community. We pride ourselves on working with the best, most innovative artists and educators from our surrounding area and through our partnership with The New School in New York City. In a safe, caring, and supportive environment, teaching artists transform our students. The results of which can be seen in their standout work and in their faces. At the same time our teaching artists find themselves inspired to pursue excellence in their own professional lives. 16

YOUR SUPPORT HELPS INSPIRE THOSE WHO INSPIRE THE CHILDREN Daniel Lendzian

Your support of Bethel Woods’ creative learning programs and initiatives has a profound benefit for the participants, the educators, and the community. Our programs spark creativity and innovation in young minds, inspire teachers, and create a lasting social impact through improved academic performance, increased civic engagement, and the transformative power of shared experiences.

P.L.A.Y.: Music

When he learned about Bethel Woods’ Teaching Artist program, Daniel Lendzian was immediately drawn to our mission. His inspiration comes from the historic site, museum, and artistic expression that changed the world in 1969. In his role as a Teaching Artist in our P.L.A.Y.: Theater program he takes his students through a deep dive to find their artistic voices in a safe and supportive environment. Daniel is grateful to Bethel Woods’ donors for making these creative learning opportunities available in an underserved community. He takes his role in maximizing their contributions seriously and hopes that these opportunities will continue to expand so that all children can benefit from the experiences available at Bethel Woods.

“My Bethel Woods experience reframed my identity as a Teaching Artist,” says Daniel Lendzian. “It made me realize that teaching is an art form.”

OVER 8,100 CHILDREN, TEENS & ADULTS participated in our creative learning programs in 2017. Their experiences ranged from digital photography to theater, music to print making, and cooking to craft cocktails.

Men and women of all ages and from diverse backgrounds are essential to ensuring an exceptional experience. From our docents in The Museum and our ushers in the Pavilion, to those who are ‘kids at heart’ helping children discover the wonders of the arts, our volunteers lend their valuable time, talent and expertise in a myriad of ways. Giving back through volunteerism has a significant economic impact across New York State. In 2017, the estimated value of each volunteer hour increased by 4% to $9.19. At Bethel Woods, our cadre of 214 volunteers contributed 13,250 hours of service last year—a value of over $300,000, but priceless in terms of their impact.

Our Journey

The ’60s values of community, inclusion and self-expression echo into all that we do. Whether in our museum, Event Gallery, Conservatory, historic grounds, or Pavilion, that same spirit reverberates into the future. With your help, we will continue to make lives better through shared experiences and the arts. With the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock festival approaching, we look forward to presenting programs and events throughout the entire year that are as iconic as those three days in 1969.
