Willow Senior Golf Classic

Offers Unique Opportunity for Amateurs

H

anbury Manor, a Marriott Golf and Country Club in Ware, Hertfordshire, is counting down the days until the 26th August when stars of the European Senior Tour will descend upon its fairways for the Tour’s most unique and newest UK event. The Willow Senior Golf Classic was added to the 2016 schedule earlier this year, and offers a unique opportunity for amateurs to be part of a recognised tour event. The alliance format of the tournament allows amateurs to play alongside the star studded line-up of players during the main tournament days, 26-28th of August. Applications are open to all amateurs who wish to enter, and all teams will be drawn, meaning those who play are in with the chance of teeing-up alongside some of the best players on the European Senior Tour. Entries for the main tournament cost only £4,000 per individual place, and there’s also the chance to play in two pro-am days preceding the Willow Senior Golf Classic at £1,250 per team (three players per team); these will take place from the 24th-25th August.

16 AUGUST 2016

All proceeds from the Senior Tour Event will go to Willow, the only national charity working with seriously ill young adults aged 16 to 40 to provide uplifting and unforgettable Special Days, enabling them to fulfil lifelong dreams and create treasured memories with loved ones. Commenting on the event, Willow Life President and co-founder, Bob Wilson says “What an exciting opportunity to play golf alongside celebrities and professional golfers alike and be part of this prestigious Senior Tour. And at the same time raising much needed funds for Willow, enabling us to help many more seriously ill young adults and their loved ones.” Andy Stubbs, Managing Director of the European Senior Tour, said: “We are delighted to be able to add another event on English soil to the 2016 Senior Tour schedule, but we are also delighted to be able to support Willow and help highlight the fantastic work they do. “We are extremely grateful to Duncan Sinclair for his generosity in enabling this event to happen and for his valued support of the European Senior Tour over the years. Hanbury Manor Marriott Hotel and

Country Club is a superb venue for a Senior Tour event and collectively we look forward to working together to promote Willow and raise funds, for what is a very worthy cause.” Govert Deketh, General Manager at Hanbury Manor Golf and Country Club, hopes that the tournament will become a regular fixture at the club: “The Willow Senior Golf Classic presents an exclusive opportunity for everyday golfers to play alongside the greats on our championship course, “We hope that all who come along in August will enjoy the unique experience and brilliant facilities we have on offer here at Hanbury Manor, and that the event will be an overall success in securing a return and importantly, raising vital funds for a worthwhile charity.” The alliance formatted Willow Senior Golf Classic will take place from the 26th-28th August and a range of hospitality packages will be available for the duration of the tournament. Entries for the main tournament and the pro-am days can still be made online, but numbers are limited, so prompt booking is advised to avoid disappointment. W

ith so much depending on exam results these days, it is an anxious time for students and parents as they decide what to do when results are published on the 18th of August. If results are not as good as expected, going through the UCAS clearing process may be an option but you may have to settle for a less prestigious university or for a course that is not what you have set your heart on. An alternative is to retake some A-level exams and apply to university the following year while gaining some work experience. In Hertfordshire, St Albans Independent College offers an alternative. Founded in 1988, it has an excellent record

• Class sizes are limited to just seven students per group. • Our teachers are both highly qualified and experienced, and many are current examiners. • We have an excellent record of placing students into top universities. • The College offers a flexible combination of A-Level and GCSE courses, including the full A-level over one year. • Students can choose from over twenty-five subjects at A-level or GCSE. The College also offers more than 25 GCSE subjects over one or two years. These are mainly for students who wish to transfer from other schools during their GCSE studies or for those who wish to take additional subjects or improve existing grades. Elvis Cotena, the joint Principal, makes the point that

Class sizes are small, no more than seven, which means students benefit from individually tailored and supportive teaching of placing students into top universities. The College offers a wide range of A-level and GCSE re-sit courses. Class sizes are small, no more than seven, which means students benefit from individually tailored and supportive teaching. The environment is friendly and informal but students are inspired to do their very best, and as a result, exam grades are excellent. According to Ofsted, ‘Students do particularly well when studying A level retake courses. Last year all results were within the A* to C range, and two thirds were A* to B which far exceed national results.’ Assim Jemal, Principal at St Albans Independent College, states that ‘increasingly, students are choosing to take up the College’s unique One Year A-Level Programme where an entire A-level can be completed in one year. This means that students who would like to improve their grades or change subjects half way through an A-level program, can do so. It also means that students in a gap year can take advantage of studying an additional A-level.’ The College offers an impressive range of over 25 different subjects to choose from at A-level. These range from Classical Civilisation, Art History and Photography to Computing, Chemistry and Further Maths. The College prides itself on its flexibility, allowing students to join throughout their sixth form years and study a combination of Two-Year A-levels, A2 and AS courses. 32 AUGUST 2016

‘One of the reasons students do so well at the College is that the informal but supportive and structured academic environment helps students to build confidence in their abilities and therefore learn more effectively. Every student has a personal Mentor who is responsible for guiding their personal and academic development, even to the level of helping students to organise their files and plan their study time.’ St Albans Independent College offers a way forward after results day. Rock at the Castle is the largest event held in the county town and attracts visitors from around the country tribute act was even screened live to a fan base of thousands in the United States. The chosen charity to benefit from the event was Children’s Integrated Playschemes (CHIPS) who fundraised in red branded t-shirts and raised a

record-breaking sum of £6275 on the day. Matt Cooper the Trustee of CHIPS said: “CHIPS are absolutely overwhelmed by the incredible Rock at the Castle festival this weekend! The day was a very special one in CHIPS’ history, and unparalleled too - both in terms of fundraising and awareness. All the money raised will make such a difference to our young people with additional needs in Hertford and their families. The day itself truly rocked - the sun was out, and the bands and performers graced the crowd with some absolutely brilliant music! We met and spoke with so many lovely people, and got the chance to explain to them what we do in Hertford, and how they can get involved - we even had some volunteer enquiries on the day! We’d like to extend our deepest thanks to the Hertford Town Council team, all the bands and performers, the stage team, all our volunteers, everyone who made the day happen, and of course, each and every person that attended Rock at the Castle

2016 and gave generously to CHIPS.” The donations raised on the day will be used to fund Christmas activities for the children and their siblings in Hertford. The charity will also look to purchase some specialist play equipment at the Hertford Children’s Centre at Sele School. In addition, the money raised will go towards specialist behaviour management training for the staff. As the event has grown significantly over the years, the addition of the Moat Garden Acoustic Stage was introduced. A family music stage with a ‘high school musical’ feel was also an addition for 2016. The family stage was located on the castle island and also housed a variety of children’s amusements including games, face painting, sand art and bouncy castle. Both new music areas complimented the main and acoustic stage on the castle lawn and visitors enjoyed the variety of acts performing on the day. Chairman of the Development and Leisure Committee, Cllr Miss Jane Sartin, said: “The 2016 Rock at the Castle definitely goes down as one of the best. A huge amount of work goes into preparing for the event, and my sincere thanks goes to the staff of Hertford Town Council and all those involved in organising and playing the music. Thanks also to the many volunteers who tirelessly picked litter, marshalled the event and ensured everyone remained safe.” The next Hertford Town Council event at the Castle takes place on the afternoon of Sunday 21st August, when there will be tours of the Castle and a brass band playing on the lawn. or the second year running a team of keen cyclists from Hertfordshire is running a cyclosportive to raise funds for the Rotary Club of Amwell. After the success of last year’s inaugural Étape d’Amwell – which raised over £3,500 for charity – the team is aiming to make September’s event even bigger and better. Accessible to cyclists of all abilities, the ride will take place on Sunday 4 September at Allenbury’s Sports Club in Ware, Hertfordshire. There will be three course options, giving

enthusiastic cyclists the chance to power through 50 km, 100 km or 150 km depending on their skill level, all to raise money for great causes. The Rotary club of Amwell is part of Rotary International, a charity which aims to make a positive impact in local communities as well as supporting deserving causes around the world. Sponsored by Ware Bros, a local family business, the team hopes to raise £5,000 from the event.

All profits from the event will be split between the Isabel Hospice (www.isabelhospice.org.uk) – which enhances quality of life for patients living with cancer and other terminal illnesses in eastern Hertfordshire – and other Rotary-supported charities including Qhubeka, World Bicycle Relief ’s programme in South Africa. Joe Dumont, event organiser and member of the Rotary Club, commented: “Last year’s race was a huge success: the cycling community came together and had a great time while making money for several great causes. This year we’ve added a third 150 km option due to popular demand for an even bigger challenge, but no matter what your ability if you love to cycle then sign up and get involved: it promises to be a great day out. ” THE DETAILS You can find information on how to register and kickstart your fundraising at www.amwellsports.org.uk.

AUTUMN & WINTER 2016/2017

Collection

Armani Junior Newborn Autumn Winter 2016/2017 (1-12 months; 3-36 months) The Newborn collection consists of a series of playsuits and outfits in jersey, chenille and cotton interlock, with delicate pink muslin details. The graphic prints are miniature versions of Emporio Armani Manga Bear, or feature tiny frogs and balloons on a polka-dotted white and pink background. Hats, patterned wool scarves and the softest nappa leather shoes, either plain or in polka dots, complete the collection and are available in exclusive gift packs.

Armani Junior Boy Autumn Winter 2016/2017 (6-36 months; 4-16 years) Forest Forest is a classically winter theme that takes its graphic inspiration from the work of Ansel Adams, the photographer whose works feature the large American national parks. The colour palette is cold and includes blue, white, light grey and forest green. The use of warm materials such a wool, fabric, velvet and canvas makes the outerwear perfect for sub-zero temperatures.

Lunar A double inspiration for this theme: space and the lunar world and the abstract and action works

of the artist Jackson Pollock. Brush strokes of strong colours such as bright blue, lime green and fluorescent orange stand out on classical chromatic base of white, black, blue and grey. The mix of textures give life to technical garments with a contemporary elegance, ideal for free time and for more sophisticated occasions.

Armani Junior Girl Autumn Winter 2016/2017 (6-36 months; 4-16 years) Armanissimo Clean lines, attention to detail and the choice of natural and practical fabrics are the basis of Armanissimo, designed for light-hearted and spirited children returning to their school desks after the summer holidays. The graphics are central, with all-over white and blue polka dots inspired by the works of the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. The outerwear includes the little bon ton jacket in soft wool fabric and the super-light jacket finished with gros grain ribbons. The must have in this collection is the classic 5-pockets with new wearability, snugger but at the same time comfortable with its powerstretch fabrics. The collection is completed by an extensive range of footwear, from varnished pumps to the drummed leather boots, bags and hats.

Artisanal A gutsy and yet sweet theme, featuring a delicate palette that includes pale pink, plain grey, multicoloured, milky white and blue, with decisive

touches of pink glitter. The graphics are inspired by Emporio Armani Manga Bear, the bear wearing glasses in the Emporio Armani women’s collections and are to be found on the little fleece garments, jersey T-shirts and the tricot knitwear. As far as outerwear, of note is the Scottish Montgomery duffle coat, the eco-leather parka and the eco-fur with hood. Accessories include biker boots and slipons, to match bags and hats.

Luxury Capsule For the winter season, Armani Junior proposes an elegant and refined capsule collection that takes its inspiration from the Haute Couture Giorgio Armani Privé range. The collection includes silk velvet garments featuring bamboo patterns, a cardigan that fastens with a jewel button and a tulle dress that is as light as the clouds, in white, red or blue with embroidered polka dots.

‘Frog’ special project ‘Frog’ is a special project for little girls including dresses inspired by the works of the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. Polka dots of various sizes – white on blue or blue on white – and a picture of a frog recurring as a detail and in prints on little dresses, cardigans, waterproof jackets and sweaters. The navy blue double-breasted jacket has a hood decorated with the outline of a frog, which also appears on the cap, leggings and socks. The collection is completed with polka-dot rubber boots, tall or Chelsea style. Emporio Armani, 020 7823 8818, 020 7491 8080 www.armani.com

Lose your double chin Gain a more contoured neck

Before

A

couple of months ago, a patient started telling me about a concert she had been to the night before. “It sounds amazing,” I told her. “Do you have any

pictures?” “Angela” took out her phone, and started swiping. It took me a while, but eventually I noticed something strange. There were pictures of the band, of the crowd, and of the group of friends she was with. But absolutely none of her. “No….” she said wistfully, when I pointed it out. “I hate being in pictures. It’s my double chin…” Over the past few years, I’d heard similar comments many times from patients. The age of the selfie and Instagram is tough on many people who are self-conscious about some aspect of their appearance. But facial features like double chins can cause particular upset and anxiety. The result of genetics for some people and weight gain for others, double chins are very ageing, because they change the shape of your face. And they are so difficult to hide. “Polo necks just draw attention to my chin,” “Angela” told me. “I’ve tried loads of different haircuts, but none of them really made a difference. For a while, I tried standing at a particular angle when people took my photo – but I just couldn’t bear to see the results. “Now I’d rather leave the room. But my family has started noticing that I won’t be photographed, 52 AUGUST 2016

After

which is making me feel even worse…” Unfortunately, double chins are particularly hard to get rid of. They don’t always disappear with weight loss, and you can’t spot-exercise them away, despite thousands of Internet pages telling you otherwise. Until recently, the options with aesthetic medicine were limited to liposuction or fat-dissolving injections, which can be painful. The good news is that there’s now an easy, non-surgical solution. Fat freezing quite literally freezes your fat cells until they disintegrate – killing them off. Up until now, it’s been one of our treatments of choice for areas like love handles, backrolls and thighs, because it’s so effective at reducing stubborn fat that won’t disappear any other way. The problem has always been that the technology worked for large areas, so it wasn’t suitable for chins. But now, there’s a new double chin-busting device called the CoolSculpt Mini, which has been specially adapted to treat smaller pockets of fat, such as the area under the chin. Riverbanks is one of the first clinics in the UK to offer CoolSculpt Mini and we’ve been thrilled with it. Each session takes just half-an-hour, and you see results within three to four weeks. There’s no downtime – you can usually go straight back to work – and it’s non-invasive, with no surgery or needles involved. Best of all, because it’s not a new treatment – just a new area it can be applied to – it’s tried, tested,

Before

After

safe and effective. The investment starts from £1,500 for a single treatment and our patients who have already undergone the treatment are already enjoying slimmer jawlines. “My face looks so different - I feel like I’ve lost 10 years,” “Angela” told me when I caught up with her recently. “I’ve had a radical haircut, because I don’t have to use my hair to cover up a double chin more. I feel great!” I asked her whether she’s happier to have her picture taken nowadays. “I put up a picture of myself on Facebook, and got loads of ‘likes’,” she laughed. “I could get used to that….” If that’s the kind of result you’re looking for, hit ‘reply’ to find out more. Your double chin can be gone before the end of the month. Warm regards,

Ravi

Child Modelling:

A Parent’s Guide

D

o you think your child has what it takes to be a child model? Modelling can be a fantastic, social and fun experience for children of any age. Every parent thinks that their child is the most beautiful, but what if everyone else seems to thinks so too? Does that mean he or she is a potential child model? The world of child modelling isn’t all glamour. You need to be quite realistic about what a shoot involves. There is a lot of waiting around so parents should be well prepared with plenty of books and games. And even if your child gets a job, there is still no guarantee the pictures will be used. For commercials, they tend to book a variety of ‘types’ of children, not deciding until the day who they will use.

Here are some more tips:

And above all, make sure everyone is enjoying it. If your child stops having fun - don’t continue just because you want them to. To find a reputable agency, it pays to do a little homework. Contact advertising agencies, magazines, catalogues and clothing companies to see which agencies they use regularly. If possible, visit the agency. 56 AUGUST 2016

Avoid agencies advertising for children; a genuine agency will have enough children applying to them not to advertise

Your agency will send the model book out to clients; set up auditions, or ‘castings’; organise payment (and take around 25% commission) and secure you a licence. The licence is a Government requirement for all children aged from six months to 16 years. It is applied for through your Local Education Authority regardless of whether your child has started school. LEA requirements can vary from area to area, but generally

a licence will enable your child to work between 20 to 30 times over a sixmonth period. The money can vary – from £40 a job to thousands. The average rate is £40 an hour, but you will also get paid for castings (around £25). Advertising pays considerably more than editorial work but it is also much harder to get.

Here are some of the best modelling agencies locally, for kids. All that’s left is to get practicing that pose... Bonnie & Betty Agency Tel: 020 8676 6294 Bruce and Brown Tel: 020 7624 7333 Kids London Tel: 020 7924 9595 Norrie Carr Agency Tel: 020 7253 1771 Urban Angel Tel: 0870 871 0045

• Choose your agency carefully. A good model agency will save you time and stress, and help your child’s modelling career, helping you find the best jobs for your child, making sure their needs are put first and the law is complied with. • Don’t waste money on professional photos when applying to agencies. A good model agency will need only to see snapshots to decide whether your child has potential. • Avoid agencies advertising for children; a genuine agency will have enough children applying to them not to advertise. • Don’t rush into signing a contract. Genuine agencies will always want to meet your child in person and will let you read any paperwork in your own time. • Visit the website of the National Network for Children in Employment & Entertainment (NCEE) for more information on the employment of school-age children. • Be realistic. If you don’t want your child to work during school time, she’s unlikely to get work as most shoots will occur during the working day.

Faking it… W

e should be relaxing in glorious sunshine right about now, but it’s fair to say this summer’s been a washout so far, with more than its fair share of wind, rain and even flooding. With sunbathing opportunities so few and far between, it’s time to hit the bottle - the self-tan bottle, that is. The good news is this year’s also brought, well, a flood of new products that will help you get your glow on in no time. Whether you’re a self-tan newbie or practically a pro, here are the best ways to fake it this summer...

EXPRESS YOURSELF

Think self-tanning involves a ton of prep, hours slathering on a smelly potion and then a long wait while precariously trying to avoid staining everything you touch? Think again: the latest crop of express products get the job done in record time. Sienna X HIT Express Tan, £24.95, is a ‘high intensity’ lotion that washes off after 60 minutes and develops over the next two to eight hours (www.sienna-x. co.uk). Even faster, NKD SKN Pre-Shower Tan, £13.99, washes off after 10 minutes and can be used every time you shower to grow your glow gradually (www.superdrug.com). And last year’s big tan hit, St St Tropez Gradual Tan In Shower Golden Glow Medium, Superdrug

Tropez Gradual Tan In Shower Golden Glow, currently reduced to £9.66 from £14.50, is back with a darker medium shade (www.boots.com). Applied like a shower gel, it gives a deeper tan in just three minutes, and comes with the Kardashian seal of approval.

NATURAL FORCES

The active ingredient in most selftanning products is a chemical form of dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which can dry out the skin. A new generation of naturally derived actives are revolutionising the sector, however. Skinny Tan Self Tan Mousse, £21.99, which uses DHA extracted from the brassica napus plant, has become Superdrug’s fastest-selling tanning product (www.superdrug.com). Dr Organic has launched a range of Moroccan Glow Self Tan Mousses, £14.99, available in light, medium and dark (www.hollandandbarrett. com).Incredibly simple to use, Tan-Luxe Hydrating Self

Buy it now America’s number one skincare product has just landed on our shores, bringing intense hydration at attractive price points. The hero of Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost range is the ultra-light Water Gel moisturiser, £12.99 (Boots.com), which contains a unique hyaluronic gel matrix that sinks into skin and draws in moisture like a sponge, keeping your complexion looking fresh and healthy all day.

G

etting dolled up for garden parties, weddings and summer soirees is all part of the fun, but no one wants to be touching up their make-up constantly, because their foundation is battling against balmy weather (and losing), or their lipstick has jumped ship onto the rim of a champagne glass. In the face of such an onslaught, it’s time to bring out the big guns the products that will outlast toasts, tequila shots and even tears (happy ones, hopefully). These are the cosmetics that are quick to use but slow to fade...

Preparation is everything when it comes to long-lasting make-up. Adding a primer to your prep routine gives your base an extra layer of defence: the silky, almost dry-feeling formula doesn’t sink into skin but it sits on the surface, meaning your foundation sits on top of that and won’t wear off as easily. This Works In Transit Camera Close-Up, £33 (LookFantastic.com), is a leave-on mask, moisturiser and primer in one, so it’s great if you’re travelling and don’t want to lug around a heavy cosmetics bag. Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield has been relaunched this year as a larger size Prince’s Trust Limited Edition, £69.50 (www.johnlewis. com; £10 from every sale goes to the charity). With SPF30 and blurring properties, this primer boosts your complexion inside and out. For infallible eye make-up, try a brush-on liquid like Arbonne Prime & Proper Eye Makeup

Primer, £21, which leaves an opaque base and makes your eye shadow all the more impactful (www.arbonne.com).

SET THE TONE

Once you’ve finished the rest of your make-up, a generous spritz of setting spray will create an invisible shield, locking foundation and blusher in place. Clarins Fix Make-Up, £23, is a cooling mist that contains moisturising aloe vera and anti-pollution actives (www.boots.com). Avon Magix Prime and Set Spray, £6, is a light and hydrating vitamin-infused formula that can be used as both a primer and finisher (www.avon.uk.com).

LOCK YOUR LIDS

For eye make-up that won’t crease or crumble, you need a highly pigmented formula. Guerlain Ecrin 1 Couleur Long Lasting Eyeshadow in Taupe Secret, £22.05 (Escentual. com), has a powder matte finish but the gel-coated pigments ensure the colour stays put. MAC Pro Longwear Waterproof Colour Stick in Bleached Out Beige, £16, is a twist-up crayon that’s chunky enough to sweep on all-over colour, but sharp enough if you want apply a concentrated dash, and it comes in 21 shades (www.maccosmetics.co.uk). If a smudge of pencil on the lash line is what you’re after, Clarins Crayon Khol Long-Lasting Eye Pencil With Brush in Smoky Plum, £15.40 (Escentual.com), is soft enough to blend but won’t budge once in place, while No7 Stay

At-home IPL devices don’t come cheap, but do they really work? Katie Wright puts one to the test...

“T

he Braun Silk Expert IPL Hair Removal System promises a reduction in hair after seven weekly sessions, and although it takes a bit of practise, it’s really simple to use and requires no charging. Skin must be clean, dry and fuzz-free (using any method you like) before use, then all you do is take the handheld device, place the sensor on your skin (making sure no light can get through), hold down a button and glide along your skin slowly. The device uses IPL (intense pulsed light) to zap the hair follicles every few seconds, and also has a button which provides a more ‘sensitive’ experience,

for use on the face or more delicate areas. It’s relatively pain-free and after the seven sessions I can see a noticeable decrease in the amount of hair growth on my legs. This system unfortunately won’t be suitable for all skin tones, and I think it will take me a few more sessions to get the results I want, but as far as home IPL goes, I’m pleasantly surprised.” Braun Silk Expert IPL Hair Removal System, currently reduced to £299.99 from £399.99 (Argos.co.uk)

CARING FOR YOU AT

SPIRE HARPENDEN

S

pire Harpenden Hospital have a fully equipped state of the art diagnostic imaging department which is accessible whether you are using private medical insurance or paying for yourself. The imaging department boasts an extensive array of updated equipment that can help investigate your condition and diagnose your health issue. This vital department is managed by Claudia Welsh, and she explains how she and her team can help you when you visit us at Spire Harpenden. What is your role at Spire Harpenden Hospital and how do you help patients through their journey? “I have been Diagnostic Imaging Manager at Spire Harpenden for five and half years. My department’s aim is to ensure that when you have an appointment with us you feel comfortable and receive a high quality service. I appreciate that coming in for a scan is one of the first stages after visiting a GP or consultant so it can be a little bit daunting, but we make the area as relaxed as we can to help put you at ease. I, or any one of my team are happy to answer questions at any time if you are unsure of something, whether it is before you visit us or during your appointment. What is your favourite part of your job? I love all of imaging as it is a nice cross between medicine and technology. I’m a bit of a geek, so the technical side really appeals to me. I like it when everything is done and in order – I’m a bit of a perfectionist. The most crucial thing is teamwork. “Succeeding together” is my favourite of the Spire values. This is really important to me, as I believe that teamwork can help overcome any obstacle. We all know that technology is changing all the time, what are the biggest improvements you have seen and how do they help patients? “We understand how hectic everyone’s lives have become. In the last five years we have increased the range of services we offer and have also made booking appointments a lot more convenient;

68 AUGUST 2016

we are usually open seven days a week and have appointment times out of working hours. To keep up with ever-improving technology, we have replaced all of our key equipment over the last five years to ensure that we are continually offering up to date and accurate diagnostic services. These replacements include our mammography machine, CT & MRI scanners, X-ray room, and three ultrasound machines. Having the right equipment is not enough, you also need a great team to use it and I am fortunate enough to have one. My team consists of highly skilled radiographers, consultant radiologists, healthcare assistants and a medical secretary. A complementary team in main reception and booking also helps! You mentioned that you have a brand new MRI scanner; how could this improve my MRI experience? “Some people can be concerned when they find out that need to have to have an MRI scan as they are worried about the confined space. Our new machine is a wide bore scanner, which means that it is wider than older models. When you are in the machine, some of the sequences (scans) are actually silent. In fact, it is not uncommon for some of our patients to fall asleep during their scan! If you are apprehensive about having an MRI scan, you can call and speak with a member of the MRI team, alternatively you may contact your GP before your appointment, as there are ways to make the experience more comfortable. It is vitally important that if you have had a joint replacement or implants that you tell us when you

are making the appointment so we can check your suitability for the scan. How quickly can I have my scan or X-ray at Spire Harpenden? “X-rays, ultrasounds and some CT scans can be carried out within the same day or week as your referral by your consultant or GP with the correct paperwork. CT and MRI investigations require an appointment. We aim to offer appointments within a week of your referral depending on your own availability – we are always happy to work around you. You have recently introduced a cardiac CT scan, who can this help and why? This is another new service we offer here at Spire Harpenden, for those with issues or a family history concerning their heart. You will need to be referred by either your GP or a consultant that you are seeing to make sure that this is the scan that you require and is suitable for you. To make your visit to Spire Harpenden as easy as possible we have free parking on site, homemade food that is freshly prepared on site and staff that are here to help you on your journey back to full health. It’s your dough, so before buying make sure you’ve

seen it on show If you have ever come across media adverts from double glazing companies implying that their prices will be cheaper allegedly because they do not have a showroom, their products may well be cheaper, but ask yourself why?

I

t could be that they only employ sub-contract fitters prepared to work for minimum wages, or may-be they are using cheaper window, door or conservatory products? For your own sake, do think carefully about the consequences of being unable to see the double glazing products you are considering buying displayed in a showroom before you order. If you cannot see what you are thinking of buying, can you be certain what the window or door or conservatory you will actually get

76 AUGUST 2016

will look like or will be made out of if you opt for the “cheapest” quote? Given the significant investment required when double glazing part or all of your property or adding an extension onto your home, it is worth seriously considering only dealing with a company that has a showroom containing well-made high quality, properly fitted products, as you get to see what you are buying, before you buy it. Also, if you do not get what you ordered, or the quality you were

expecting, you then have somewhere easily accessible to go back to, as if need-be you’ll be able to compare what got fitted with what is on display in the showroom. For example, if you visit the Hazlemere Group’s High Wycombe 8,000 square foot showroom in Wellington Road on Cressex Business Park, or their Welwyn Garden City showroom in Hertfordshire on the Mundells Industrial Estate you will be able see on display a wide range of UPVC, aluminium and composite doors in lots of configurations and finishes, various double glazed window systems, aluminium and UPVC conservatories, orangeries,

in High Wycombe, but as it is already well established and paid for, it is not a cost that needs to be passed onto Hazlemere’s thousands of satisfied customers. Hazlemere see their showrooms, and the industry leading home improvement experts they employ, as essential parts of their customer service. Both are accessible six days a week - before, and after purchase, with the High Wycombe showroom also open every Sunday 10am to 1pm. Given Hazlemere Windows, Doors and Conservatories offer a no obligation quotation and free consultation (whether at your home or in one of their showrooms at your convenience),

If you visit the Hazlemere Group’s High Wycombe 8,000 square foot showroom in Wellington Road on Cressex Business Park, or their Welwyn Garden City showroom in Hertfordshire on the Mundells Industrial Estate you, will be able see on display a wide range of UPVC, aluminium and composite doors in lots of configurations and finishes roof lantern lights, bi-folding doors, solid roof extensions, as well as roofline cladding, plastic guttering, UPVC fascias and soffits etc. Trading since April 1985, most of Hazlemere’s experienced home improvement consultants have over two decades of industry expertise, and are on hand to give anyone who visits the showroom, or calls on 01344 989938 during opening hours, free expert help and advice, whether or not in the end you decide to buy anything from Hazlemere Windows, Doors and Conservatories. Most double glazing firms do not manufacture, but simply supply and fit. As independent manufacturers and installers Hazlemere Windows are not tied to any particular double glazing system or product, so are able to genuinely advise you what is the best solution for your particular home and for your specific requirements. Hazlemere may not always be the least expensive on the market, but, as with most things in life “you get what you pay for”. They will not compromise the quality of their products, and pride themselves in their robust 10 year guarantee, not only that they will deliver it in a timely fashion when their dedicated service engineers are called out, but you can be reassured that they will be around to do so in future, given they own their entire premises in South Bucks, including their Head Office, 38,000 square foot Factory and Showroom. It is true that they have a large adjacent showroom

why not take advantage of their decades of experience when choosing the right product and home improvement partner for your property?

Award winning makeover

Mumford & Wood conservation™ casement windows for fabulous arts & craft refurbishment

A

ward-winning timber Conservation™ windows and doors by Mumford & Wood have been specified by Wide Sky Architects in the refurbishment of a 1930’s Arts and Craft property in Buckinghamshire which is typical of the local vernacular. When purchased two years ago the property was tired, dated and badly in need of total transformation both inside and out but now it is truly a ‘des res’. The property has been completely remodelled: the footprint of the original building retained with the benefit of two and three storey extensions made to either side giving a total area of 420m². Windows and doors were in a poor condition, a mix of rotting timber and inappropriate, ill-fitting plastic. All were replaced with high performance, double glazed Conservation™ products which not only made an immediate improvement to the aesthetics of the property but totally changed the interior ambiance with style, light, warmth and comfort. “When we look back at the ‘before’ images of this house, which we both fell in love with, I have to agree that this was a massive undertaking but even after all the hard work we never question why we did it. We definitely made the right decision to turn this into a lovely family home,” says Claire who has been particularly hands-on during the entire build process. “We left a lovely property in Primrose Hill in London where we were very happy but now there is space for the whole family and we are so lucky to have 80 AUGUST 2016

such a generous size plot in a smart town only a short commute to London.” The rear garden has a swimming pool, a beautiful al fresco dining area and outdoor kitchen. Landscaping is complete and there is room for Claire to grow her own vegetables and there are plans to build a smart garden room ideal as a home office, garden or play room. Claire was introduced to Mumford & Wood by her architect Alison Watts of Wide Sky Architects, Amersham, and several site visits took place before the window specification was agreed and signed off. Hosted by Tom Barfield, regional Sales Director, Mumford & Wood, and Alison, Claire was taken to see a number of completed projects in the area that feature Mumford & Wood windows and doors which helped the couple to clearly identify what style they wanted for their new home. “We wanted to bring this Arts and Crafts building back to life and retain its clarity of form, use sympathetic materials and traditional construction methods while bringing it up to 21st century standards of performance,” comments Claire. “I did a lot of research myself on architectural style and detail which is when we realised that only casement windows would be right for this house. We were delighted that Mumford & Wood could accommodate our choice of black and white using a dual mixed finish. Tom knew exactly what we wanted to achieve and reassured us with his advice and guidance. There was no room for error; these windows had to be right.” The new dual finish facility allows the frames to be stained in black externally to compliment the original vertical black beam detail above the top floor windows beneath the eaves, and

white internally, while the sash leaves have been finished white both inside and out. “This style is quite typical for the period and in particular for an Arts and Crafts property so for us there was no choice,” confirms Claire. “This property needed serious refurbishment,” says Alison Watts, Wide Sky Architects, Amersham. “Claire and I discussed her detailed and specific spacial and design requirements and her aesthetic vision for the house. “The design that I arrived at for both the side extensions, the attic conversion, the studio above the integral double garage, now reflect the needs of modern living and have created successful spaces whilst seamlessly integrating with the original accommodation.” Alison continues: “Original features have been retained and replicated to preserve and enhance the character of the property both internally and externally. The choice of external materials carefully match those used on

feature glazing bars. Windows in the rear elevation, some in a bay configuration, are complemented with non-bar French doorsets, fixed glazed side panels and non-bar top hung fanlights. The feature staircase window is fixed. The oak entrance door is original and has been restored to its former glory while other exterior doors have been replaced with partly glazed and panelled Conservation™ doors and the boot room has a stylish and functional stable door. BRE A+ rated Conservation™ products are manufactured to the exacting standards of the British Woodworking Federation’s Wood Window Alliance scheme. High performance, thermally efficient and acoustically sound, only clear-grade, FSC certificated Siberian larch, which is engineered for ultimate strength, stability and robustness, is used in the manufacturing process. Mumford & Wood’s products have a life expectancy of 55 – 65 years or more and a variety of micro-porous finishes – paint, stain or dual-colour – will

We’re very pleased with this project and delighted that Claire and her family are enjoying their new home the original property and the interior re-modelling and refurbishment of the house have together created the beautiful family home that Claire was looking for; the choice of new doors and windows have been a key element in its success.” While the 18 month build project was underway the family rented locally so that they could keep a close eye on progress and be available to make quick decisions. Main contractor KD-B Developments Limited, of King’s Langley, undertook the project working closely with the architect throughout. Specialising in extension and refurbishment projects, company director Lee Kirby, says: “We completely gutted the house; the roof was removed, the joists replaced, the floors were stripped out, insulation installed in every conceivable location and underfoor heating installed. Many details had to be repaired or replaced and we also built the new extensions, matching the original brick as closely as possible to achieve a seamless join of old and new. When it weathers it will be hard to tell the difference. “We’re very pleased with this project and delighted that Claire and her family are enjoying their new home. A great deal of time, love and effort has gone into this re-creation which is testimony to the attention to detail that everyone involved has contributed.” Lee Kirby’s team installed the windows and doors themselves commenting on delivery, quality of workmanship and operation. “These windows will last a lifetime. Not only do they look great but together with all the other high specification materials and systems we have incorporated into the build this house will exceed even todays’ standards of performance and sustainability.” The property was shortlisted for the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Central Building Excellence Awards 2016. A combination of double glazed Conservation™ casement windows, with and without glazing bars, were manufactured in the company’s state-of-the-art facility in Essex. Top hung fanlights feature elegant 18mm ovolo glazing bars while dormer casement windows to the attic rooms, a wonderful self-contained space for guests, also

ensure they look and perform better for longer. Many carry Secured by Design meeting the highest levels of security accreditation and all products carry the BSI Kitemark and are Energy Saving Trust listed. “I would do it all over again,” says Claire, “but on a much smaller scale. Perhaps we will find an exquisite little cottage somewhere locally that needs love and attention and I can revive and bring it back to life again.”
