I have been fishing for as long as I can remember and fly fishing since I was thirteen. My fly fishing career started with wobbly fiberglass rods in the beginning of the seventies and, with the exception of a few “dark” years when I trained to become the best javelin thrower in the world (and failed utterly), I’ve been fly fishing ever since. Years upon years of fly fishing AND fly casting, equally balanced, constitute the most important part of my “education” when it comes to designing fly rods and fly lines. If fishing was the only thing I did, I would not have been able to focus so much on how rods and lines perform and how different adjustments from my side affect their performances. Furthermore, I wouldn’t have known how to establish, and fine tune, some kind of extra sense regarding the cooperation between “The Three Musketeers of Fly Casting”: Rod, line and human being. Once a nerd, always a nerd! God knows how many hours I have spent fly casting during certain periods of my life and from these hours my thesis and philosophies about fly casting have gradually formed. The practical applications of this theoretical starting point has led to a fly casting concept based on optimal learning through direct feedback and a basic understanding of the principles behind good fly casting. Somewhere along the way I started getting alternately annoyed or satisfied with different combinations of rods and lines. Rod actions, different kinds of materials, recovery speeds, stroke lengths, line profiles, head weights, densities, coating qualities. Combining philosophy, practical applications and wishful thoughts about better rods and lines, led to cooperation with a couple of Scandinavian developers of fly fishing equipment - including LTS and Zpey, where I took part in designing rods and lines for both. This time, with Scierra, I have gone all in, and I’m responsible for 48 new rods and 62 new lines that will be in the shops soon. However, I couldn’t have done this without the invaluable help from Robert Peetz (rods) and Knut Ekelund (lines).

THE STORY

In August 2014, I was presented with the opportunity to design close to fifty brand new fly rods for Scierra. These rods were to be presented on the market in 2016 and were to replace all existing Scierra fly rods. It was an offer I just couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t refuse! I took on the responsibility with a serious and unwavering commitment to quality. I was adamant at making the best rod program in the history of Scierra â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in close cooperation with the Scierra pro staff team. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how we did it: Based on my deeply rooted philosophy of fly rod actions I spent considerable time drafting rough sketches of the upcoming program. Fellow product developer, Robert Peetz and Lars Svendsen himself flew up to Oslo and we tested the current rods and discussed the upcoming range for two straight days before agreeing on which prototypes to start with. I developed a thorough list of specifications for the first range of prototypes and this was sent to the factory. A few weeks later the prototypes arrived and now the hard work started: We weighed and measured every rod meticulously and photographed the bending curves against a background reference system and compared these to different reference rods. Each and every rod was seriously tested with different lines, both inside (to avoid disturbing winds) and outside (for more realistic conditions). I had to spend countless hours in ice cold water, spey casting the double handers in their natural habitat. I enjoyed every second of it! We spent a lot of time choosing the right finish for the different series: Colors, guides, reel seats, cork etc. Quality demands hard work. These procedures were repeated through 4-5 series of prototypes. Every time a new set of prototypes arrived in Denmark, I flew down so that Robert and I could spend long hours doing what rod nerds love to do: Measure, weigh, photograph, compare, test cast and finally decide on the necessary changes for the next range of prototypes. Finally, we calibrated the rods to the different line series we were developing to be able to provide you with the perfect rod-and-line combos.

FLY ROD ACTIONS 1. FLEX PROFILES For each of the six different fly rod series you will find a number denoting what we have called the Flex Profile. This a traditional way of defining HOW DEEP a rod bends (flexes) when moderately loaded. The scale we are using is this:

BENDING CURVE SMOOTHNESS We also focus on the bending curves of our fly rods and the fact that we are always aiming for as unbroken (smooth) curves as possible, to ensure that force is transferred more effectively from fly caster to fly line, through the rod. Unbroken bending curves will also prevent rod breakage.

At Scierra, we are focusing on carbon rods only, and the quality of carbon (being the key element to high recovery speeds) will also be the most important factor deciding the price ranges of different rod series.

2. RECOVERY SPEEDS The Recovery Speed is the time it takes for a bent rod to straighten. This depends on the quality of the carbon fibers AND the stiffness of the rod (the thickness of the rod walls and the diameter of the blank). A good, old cane rod is made from natureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own bamboo and bamboo is definitely slower than modern carbon, so it will come as no surprise that an average carbon rod of today is a lot faster than an average cane rod.

THE FLY RODS

My initial idea has always been that a really good fly rod should require a minimum of human power to perform at its optimum. A fly rod is nothing but an amplifier of human speed, amplifying the input speed through leverage (rod length) and elastic recovery (as the rod returns from bent to straight). This brings us to the essence of good fly rod design: How the rod bends when loaded, how smooth the bending curve is and how fast it recovers from bent to straight during the stop. We believe that these are the key factors to efficient transformation of human input into line speed. Good fly rods require less effort to deliver a fly delicately to its intended destination. The Salis rods are designed for the coasts of Northern Europe and for the multitudes of lakes hiding huge pike and other toothy fresh water predators. We have strengthened the deeper parts of these rods to ensure actions that will master the stronger winds, heavier flies and generally difficult conditions connected with these fisheries, but we have not compromised with the curves. The smoothness of unbroken bending curves will always be the crucial part of the definition of an excellent fly rod and the Salis rods are all excellent. Enjoy! Narrow rivers will often hide unexpectedly big fish, but aren’t always compatible with rods of normal length. Shorter rods are easier to handle, especially when these brooks are accompanied by irritating trees and bushes, always eager to capture your flies. We decided to design special rods for rivers like this and were so pleased with the outcome that we added a few longer alternatives to complete the Brook series. No need to look into the future. It’s already here. No reinvention of the original concept, no hidden mainspring, just a keen vision of optimizing carbon quality with smoothness of bending curves to end up with rods that are as finely tuned to human physiology as possible. Not as deep as the Surge rods, but deep none the less and with recovery times that combine inherent depth with necessary firmness, through unbroken bending curves. The Futuro rods are designed for the salmon- and sea trout rivers of northern Europe. THE FLY LINES

The art of designing fly lines involves a multitude of factors, and to succeed we have to look for the optimal mix. A crucial initiation of a successful cooperation between a contractor and a fly line factory is to have a meeting where the options and the limiting factors are presented and discussed. The next step is to design profiles and specifications for the first batch of prototypes. A fly line is normally divided into 3 or 4 major parts. A WF-line consists of a level belly that is tapered down in both ends. A normal front taper is triangularly (smoothly) tapered from the belly to the tip (though for some lines â&#x20AC;&#x201C; especially sinking lines â&#x20AC;&#x201C; stepwise tapers are preferred) and a normal rear taper is triangularly tapered from the belly to the running line. The last part will, of course, be the running line. A shooting head will not have a running line, but a belly, a front taper and (most of the time) a very short rear taper. When we design profiles, diameter estimations are crucial, but we will also have to take weight, length and density into consideration. The longer the head the heavier it can be (a normal length 5-weight WF-head weighs about 12 grams, while an extreme Long Belly # 5 can have heads over 20 grams). One of the most important factors for Scierra is that our lines fit all of our rods of corresponding weight classes. Other important factors involve core elasticity and coating stiffness. Do we want non-elastic lines to ensure optimal sensitivity every time a fish strikes or do we aim for more elastic and less stiff lines to ensure better turnover qualities and less coiling? We design different mixes for different kinds of lines. Coating quality is another important factor. We want our lines to be as smooth as possible (minimal friction between guides and line). Our loops are infinitely small and light and this was an important factor for us from the very start. We have been through four batches of prototypes before our nerdy and perfectionist brains were satisfied. Knut Ekelund (Mr. Fly Line himself) and myself are not the easiest of designers to cooperate with, but we are both able to recognize satisfaction when a superb fly line appears. And Scierraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new fly lines are truly superb!

The relatively short heads of the Brook WF-lines are designed to present your flies carefully and with precision to high strung fish pumped with adrenaline and flight instincts. We have tapered these lines to ensure controlled turnovers and feather light presentations. The Reflection Series consists of medium length WF-lines with exceptional performances. We have measured and casted literally hundreds of WF-lines with very different tapers, we have designed three prototype versions ourselves and finally agreed on a line concept that, in our modest opinions, deserves the term masterpiece. A series of lines tapered so carefully and smoothly that they invoke their name sake - “Reflection” – whenever you cast them. First and foremost, lines for short to medium long presentations, but also lines with exceptional shooting capabilities, allowing several meters of overhang if longer casts are necessary to reach fish rising along your personal limits.

COATED RUNNING LINE The main qualities of a very good running line are a coating that is slick enough to secure flawless shooting, a core that is elastic enough to avoid line coiling, loops that are small and soft. The new Scierra coated running lines are all these things and are just what you need.
