HUMANE LET

ALBERT LINCOLN ROKER, JR.

Albert Lincoln Roker, Jr for decades, Americans have turned on their televisions and welcomed you into their homes Your infectious personality and unmistakable passion for journalism have become instantly recognizable to us all and have made you an endearing presence within the media landscape.

A son of Queens, New York, your story embodies the American story. Your mother, Isabel Roker, was of Jamaican descent and was, in your words, “a wonderful mom who sacrificed for, loved, disciplined, taught and was a terrific example for her kids and grandkids.” Your father, Albert Lincoln Roker Sr., was of Bahamian descent; he was a bus driver and labor-relations negotiator for New York City's Transit Authority. Your relationship with him, in your words, was a “two-way street of pride.” Though your parents weren’t financially wealthy, they bestowed upon you and your siblings a different kind of wealth, measured in love, respect, discipline, and perseverance

During your time at Manhattan’s Xavier High School, you honed your artistic craft, aspiring to someday become a cartoonist, but answered another calling while a student at the State University of New York at Oswego In your coursework you discovered your passion for meteorology, which led you to weather forecasting jobs in the Syracuse, Washington, DC, Cleveland, and New York City television markets

While at WNBC in New York, you distinguished yourself with your command of local and national meteorology, earning the honor of New York Magazine’s “Best Weatherman” award; overall, you have received this distinction twice. In 1995, you married the love of your life, journalist Deborah Roberts, who graces us with her presence today. In 1996, you became the regular weekday weather anchor for the Today Show, following longtime anchor Willard Scott’s retirement.

From the many Macy’s Thanksgiving Parades you’ve hosted to the iconic fist bump you gave President Joe Biden at his 2021 inauguration; your career has had many memorable moments But perhaps the most memorable thing you’ve given us is your example For teaching us to dream big, make a difference in the lives of others, and carry with us the love of our forebearers, Fisk University is proud to confer upon you the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters

D

DOCTOR OF

HUMANE LETTERS

DEBORAH ANN ROBERTS

Deborah Ann Roberts as an Emmy Award and Clarion Award-winning ABC News correspondent, co-anchor of the newsmagazine program 20/20, and veteran of broadcast journalism, your commitment to first-class reporting has indelibly set the standard within the industry and has made you a beloved and trusted presence in American households for decades.

A daughter of Perry, Georgia, you grew up in a time when Black faces were rare on the evening news, and even rarer in the anchor’s seat In an era when Black people pushed against legalized segregation and dared to dream of greater opportunities for future generations, you dared to dream of yourself as a journalist You were inspired and nurtured by your mother, Ruth Roberts, a homemaker, and your father, Ben Roberts, who owned his own carpet installation business and believed, in your words, “in hard work, humility, [and] faithfulness.”

You carried those values with you to the University of Georgia, following in the footsteps of another courageous Black woman journalist, Charlayne Hunter-Gault, the first Black woman to integrate its halls. After graduating with your of bachelor’s degree in journalism, you advanced in the business, working in the Columbus, Georgia, Knoxville, Tennessee, and Orlando, Florida television markets; in Orlando, you became a bureau chief for WFTV and served as its field anchor at NASA during shuttle launches. The Orlando Sentinel named you the area’s top woman news anchor.

In 1990, you joined NBC News and covered harrowing events from the Gulf War to the 1992 Summer Olympics, which earned you a Sports Emmy Throughout your career you’ve reported for and hosted several iconic news programs, including NBC’s Dateline and ABC’s 20/20, where you’ve covered stories ranging from the plight of refugees in Rwanda to Black Americans returning to the African homelands from where their enslaved ancestors were stolen In 1995, you married the love of your life, Al Roker, who joins us on this stage today In 2023, you were named co-anchor of 20/20, alongside co-host David Muir.

Your attention to detail, your sense of candor, and your passion for humanity distinguish you within your field, and you continue to serve as an inspiration for countless Black students who want to tell stories about our community and our world. For blazing a path forward and teaching us the importance of telling stories well, Fisk University is proud to confer upon you the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.

THE GOLD AND BLUE

The warm and genial setting sun Lights up the hills with mellow hue, Where Fisk our Alma Mater stands Majestic dear old Gold and Blue.

From North, from East, from South, from West, Ethiopia’s children gather here, And breathe in loft’est light and love Of thy inspiring atmosphere.

To North, to East, to South, to West, Thy loyal children make their way; To execute thy fine behest, “Go turn the darkness into day."

To heav’n, to country, and to thee, Our hearts shall first and last be true, We e’en shall die with loyalty To heav’n, to country, Gold and Blue.

Chorus: Then hurrah and hurrah!

For the Gold and the Blue, Her sons are steadfast, Her daughters true, Where e’re we be we shall still love thee Fisk our Alma Mater.
