THE POWER OF PROTEIN Within the human body, skeletal muscle proteins are constantly being synthesised and broken down. The rates of which vary depending upon the individual, dietary protein intake and exercise. As a baseline, for sedentary individuals, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for protein is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day (g.kg.bw.d), however highly active individuals incur greater rates of both muscle protein synthesis (MPS) and muscle protein breakdown (MPB); and as such, an active individuals protein requirement is likely to exceed this. This is particularly important for individuals who desire an increase the muscle size. For these people, dietary protein intake should be between 1.5 to 2 g.kg.bw.d of protein (Kreider et al., 2010). To support muscle growth, increasing the protein intake is only part of the story; due to digestion and protein absorption into the muscle, protein synthesis is limited with research suggesting 20-40g is optimal. At any given meal or snack, exercisers should therefore aim to consume between 20-40g of protein regularly throughout the day (every 2-3 hours) to stimulate muscle protein synthesis and therefore growth, recovery and physical adaptation. (Tipton et al, 2009).
BIOMAX® PROTEIN
An advanced weight gainer for packing on muscle size and strength Progain is a high calorie, high protein shake designed to help support your muscle and size goals. Britain’s best selling weight gainer has become a must have product for many top athletes and gym users from beginners to advanced trainers, providing a healthy 459 calories and over 33g of protein per serving. Progain is specifically formulated to help those individuals that struggle to meet their calorific needs from their normal daily diet. Progain is available in four flavours: Banana, Chocolate, Strawberry and Vanilla.
Progain contains our unique high quality protein blend, Biomax, to provide your body with essential amino acids, BCAAs (Branched Chain Amino Acids) and glutamine. Each serving of Progain contains 33g of Biomax protein per serving, which includes whey protein isolate & hydrolysed whey protein, to support the growth and maintenance of lean muscle mass. Whey protein isolate is a pure form of whey protein that has had virtually all fat, lactose and other impurities removed. It is rapidly digested by the body which allows for the fast uptake of amino acids stimulating growth and repair of the tissue. Hydrolyzed whey protein is produced by treating the whey protein with enzymes that split peptide bonds from the protein structure. These peptide fractions are absorbed faster and reach muscle cell sites quicker than other protein sources creating a fast acting protein for improved muscle recovery and growth.

BCAAs The branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are leucine, isoleucine, and valine. BCAAs are considered essential amino acids, because the human body cannot produce them itself and therefore they are required from the diet. BCAAs have been shown to activate muscle signalling pathways that stimulate protein synthesis during the recovery period after exercise (Blomstrand et al., 2006).
GLUTAMINE Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body and has recently become regarded as conditionally essential rather than a non-essential amino acid (Newsholme et al., 2011). It is commonly found in high protein foods such as meats and fish, and is used in the body for cell growth and fuelling the immune system. During periods of heavy training, glutamine levels in the body decline which can suppress the immune system and increase the risk of infection (Castell et al, 1996).
EFA/MCT Essential fatty acids (EFAs) and medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) are included in the fat content. Essential fatty acids, otherwise known as omega 3 (alpha linolenic acid) and omega 6 (linoleic acid) aid recovery by reducing inflammation and have a number of health benefits like supporting brain function, a healthy heart and good cholesterol levels. Medium chain triglycerides are metabolised by the body in a similar way to carbohydrates, making them a good calorie dense source of energy. Good quality fats are an essential part of any weight gainer as they contain more calories per gram than protein or carbohydrate.
FIBRE There are two different forms of fibre - soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibre, found in foods such as, oats, fruits and root vegetables, helps the human body to absorb nutrients and good elements from food. Insoluble fibre, found in foods such as wholemeal bread, bran and cereals, helps the body to move the waste and harmful materials from the digestive tract. Insoluble fibre also absorbs water, expanding your digestive tract and filling your stomach, increasing the feeling of satiety. Progain is high in fibre with each serving providing 16.7g of fibre. The majority of Progain’s fibre content is derived from Fructooligosacchrides (FOS) a soluble fibre from plant sources. FOS also serves as a natural sweetener and therefore avoids the necessity of adding unwanted sugar.
