About Us
JOIN THE SPECIALISTS IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS A traditional business education is no longer enough to navigate confidently in today’s global marketplace. Succeeding in the current business environment requires going the extra mile. Refining your focus. Delving deeper.
Welcome to Florida International University’s Master of International Business program. We are the only university in Florida that has achieved national acclaim for both our undergraduate and graduate programs in international business. U.S.News & World Report, BusinessWeek, Hispanic Business and AméricaEconomía have all recognized the quality of our innovative programs and noted our growing reputation for preparing leaders with international expertise. Our MIB presents a unique opportunity for people who already possess a significant business background to obtain a specialization in international business from one of the nation’s premier experts in the field. You’ll learn from and collaborate with some of today’s most vibrant minds in higher education and business while living in one of the world’s great international cities. FIU takes advantage of ever ything our location in a thriving metropolitan area has to offer. Now you can, too.
Joyce J. Elam Executive Dean College of Business Administration 1
IN PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE The MIB is designed for individuals with a strong business orientation (a bachelor’s or master’s degree in business or a related field and/or significant work experience in the field) who wish to deepen their understanding of international business practices and opportunities. This specialized degree focuses on the key skills, behaviors, and techniques critical to understanding and succeeding in today’s global environment. Our Master of International Business program is flexible, allowing you to pursue an advanced degree that’s compatible with your work schedule and family commitments. You can enroll either full-time or part-time, and you can enter the program at the start of any semester. You also have the option of completing the MIB as part of a Dual Degree program with one of our partner schools in The Americas, Europe, or Asia (see pages 10-11). We offer joint degree programs with the Master of Science in Finance (MSF) and with the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program within the FIU Chapman Graduate School of Business, as well as with the FIU Law School (JD). Under the joint degree programs, a student can obtain both degrees in less time than it would take to obtain both degrees if pursued consecutively.

lations. The result is a dynamic teaching and learning environment for faculty and students alike. It’s a setting that fosters interaction, fresh insights, and lasting knowledge. There are plenty of opportunities for you to tailor the program to your particular interests. We offer a Dual Degree program where you can earn a second master’s degree at one of our partner institutions, an International Business Trip, and a Master’s Project in which you will serve as a consultant to an international company – all geared to add more value to your experience.

This open communication between students and faculty enhances your overall educational experience and provides you with continuous support.
You’ll find your classmates in the MIB program reflect the imagination and diversity of the global community. Contemporary Curriculum
As a student in the program, you’ll be encouraged
Our program’s international and multicultural perspectives infuse all coursework. In addition to the traditional classroom lectures and presentations by faculty and guest speakers, you’ll participate in case studies, team research projects, and analytical exercises; get involved in class discussions, study groups, and written and oral presentations; and take an active part in computer modeling and analyses, role playing, and global corporate simu-
to add your own unique voice to classroom discussions and projects. It is all part of your experiential learning that transcends textbooks and lectures.
I had the chance to customize the program more or less as I wished, and to study the topics that were important to me. All of the theoretical training is applied to the real world, I found that to be very useful. I was lacking international experience, and the idea of coming to Miami and focusing my education on international business was the main factor in knowing I made the right choice.
Piero Vitale (MIB 2009) Country of Origin: Italy 3
EXPERIENCE THE CROSSROADS OF THE AMERICAS
The Miami community is as colorful as its cultural mix. An urban metropolis bordered by white-sand beaches and a unique environmental preserve, Miami is a city of great contrasts and cultural exchange. Ever the boomtown, Miami bridges the gap between North America, the Caribbean, Central and South America, as well as other parts of the world. This geographic advantage has positioned Miami as an international hub for national and multinational firms in pursuit of international business. Technology, international commerce and banking, travel and tourism, and entrepreneurship all flourish in this dynamic environment.
One of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities becomes your extended learning arena when you join the Master of International Business program at Florida International University. 4
Did you know? • Miami-Dade County is home to more than 1,000 multinational companies. • 825 miles of sandy beaches ring Florida’s coastline. • 146 languages are spoken in South Florida. • Miami ranks among the top 25 cities “to do business in America,” according to Inc. Magazine. • South Florida is home to four professional sports teams – the Miami Dolphins (football), the Florida Marlins (baseball), the Miami Heat (basketball), and the Florida Panthers (hockey). • Miami features the largest concentration of international banks south of New York City. • Miami is the 5th largest telecom hub in the world.
An important aspect of the program is the fact that you get to know perspectives from different cultures, and you get to learn how other cultures do business. One of the greatest strengths is that you get a well-rounded view of how business works. I think one of the program’s greatest strengths is the diversity it offers. I had classmates from all over the world and that really attracted me to the program.
Sandra Hoefurthner (MIB 2010) Country of Origin: Austria 5
PROGRAM CURRICULUM The MIB consists of 36 credit hours of coursework – 10 courses of three-credit hours each, one three-credit hour elective, and a three-credit hour seminar course. The program is designed to be taken as a series of courses – mostly without a specific sequence – offering optimum flexibility. Two workshops are required of all incoming students; one in Accounting and one in Data Analysis.
Master of International Business program core courses include: One of the strengths of the program is the collaboration of business professionals who provide hands-on, real business cases to the students. I would recommend the program to any student with an international interest, and by attending FIU, you have access to a multi-cultural environment with high-quality courses.

The Master’s Project –a highlight of the MIB program– gives you the invaluable opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience in applying the concepts learned throughout the program. Organized in multinational groups, you and your team members will be management consultants for a semester under the direction of a faculty member. After researching the problem and analyzing the data obtained, you will present your findings and recommendations to company executives at the end of the semester. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TRIP
The Master of International Business at FIU gave me the opportunity to have one of the most unforgettable travel experiences of my life. In Spring 2009, the MIB organized an amazing trip to DUBAI, the most populous of the seven United Arab Emirates, in order to enrich multicultural learning with important real practice. Dubai shows a lesson to the world: There are no impossibles... We also visited some important companies and financial entities in order to study their business culture, vision, and work strategies. Thank you, FIU, for getting us closer to other cultures in this vast world. This multicultural learning will definitely result key in our professional development.

If you’re a student from a partner school, you would typically complete one year toward your MBA degree at your home institution first and then attend the MIB program at the Chapman School for two semesters to complete both degrees. If you are a Chapman School student, you would begin your studies in our MIB program and then transfer to a partner institution to complete your requirements for their MBA degree.

International students participating in the program at FIU have the option of applying for a 12-month Optional Practical Training (OPT) at a U.S.-based corporation once they have earned their dual degrees.

The MIB program attracted me because international business is not an ad-hoc component; the entire program is concentrated on international business. One of the main reasons why I chose the MIB is the diversity of the student body. In our program 90 to 95 percent were people who came from all over the world. The FIU MIB program is incredibly strong academically. Despite all of my business experience, I have learned many new methodologies and ideas that I can apply to the international business arena. The fact that Miami is the gateway to Latin America opens the door for students to do internships or work for multinational companies.
