As such, this one-year, accelerated, weekend HR management program focuses on the crucial skills you need to manage within an increasingly diverse and international workplace. Our master’s in human resources is designed for both human resource professionals and qualified college graduates with an interest in human resource management. Time / Location Classes are held only at FIU Modesto A. Maidique Campus (11200 SW 8 St, Miami, FL) every Saturday from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM. The MSHRM program is also offered fully online.

Completion Requirements To earn your MSHRM degree, you’ll need to successfully complete all 12, three-credit hour core courses for a total of 36 credit-hours, a Professional Development Seminar: Financials for HR Professionals (one-credit), and select to complete either Professional Development Seminar: Career Development (one-credit) OR an HR Management Internship course (1-3 credits). If students are selecting to complete their Professional Development Seminar requirement through an HR internship, the internship must be approved by the end of the second semester of the program. Student must maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and a “C” or higher in all courses of the program and satisfy the appropriate Florida International University requirements for graduation.

Tuition for the MSHRM program for 2016-2017 academic year is approximately $2,516.92 per threecredit course for Florida residents and approximately $2,946.92 per three-credit course for non-Florida residents and international students. All fees are subject to change. Once a candidate is accepted into the MSHRM program, he or she will be required to submit a non-refundable $500 professional development fee, which will be applied toward the fees for the first semester in the program. The cost of tuition for a Florida resident is approximately $32,500; $37,700 for non-Florida residents and international students. Tuition for the MSHRM Online program for 2016-2017 academic year is approximately $2,763 per threecredit course. All fees are subject to change. Once a candidate is accepted into the MSHRM Online program, he or she will be required to submit a non-refundable $500 development fee, which will be applied toward the fees for the first semester in the program. The cost of tuition for a Florida resident and non-Florida resident and international student for the MSHRM Online program is $35,000.

MANGO HR Center The HR Center is a multi-faceted facility on the 4th Floor of the new MANGO building designed to provide graduate MSHRM students and selected undergraduate students with opportunities for real-world work experiences. When available, students will become involved in consulting projects brought to them from our MSHRM Advisory Board and other companies. They will develop content for HR webinars and produce distance learning materials. They will create an HR Newsletter for South Florida. They will also form an alliance with COB Career Services to train students in interviewing and resume building skills.

If official transcript(s) is not in English, a second copy of the transcript must be requested from previously attended institution(s) for translation by an official translation agency. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) What kind of undergraduate degree must I have to qualify for this program? FIU requires you to have a four-year bachelor degree from an accredited university. Do I include my certified transcripts with the application? FIU requires that official transcripts are sent in directly by the college(s) or university (ies) you attend(ed). You cannot send in copies of these transcripts yourself. If you are an alumnus (ae) of FIU, there is no need to have transcripts sent. If you attended a university outside the U.S. and the transcripts are not in English, they must be translated by a certified translator. The translation and an official copy of the transcripts must be submitted. Can I waive the TOEFL/IELTS? International students may waive the TOEFL exam only if they have earned an undergraduate or master’s degree in a TOEFL-exempt country. Those who are not waived from the TOEFL requirement will need to score at least 550 on the paper-based, 213 on the computer-based, 80 on the internet-based test or official minimum IELTS score of 6.5, or an equivalent score on a comparable examination. GMAT scores - 5 years GRE scores - 5 years TOEFL scores - 2 years Institutional TOEFL scores (FIU) - 1 year How many students are there in a class? The maximum number of students per class is 54. An average of 30 students admitted each semester. Is a thesis required in the program? No, there is no required thesis. Do I need to complete an internship to graduate from the program? No, if you decide not to complete an internship for credit while in the program, you may take the Career Management Professional Development Seminar to meet the program requirements. Can classes be waived if I took some MSHRM classes in another university? Classes taken in another university program will not be waived since this is a 12-month, lock-step program. Courses from other programs also are not transferable. Can I pursue two graduate degrees at the same time? No. Unfortunately, you cannot pursue two degrees at the same time at FIU. Can I prolong the MSHRM program for more than 12 months? No, you cannot prolong the MSHRM for more than 12 months. Since it is a lock-step program, you must remain with your class throughout the entire sequence until the program is concluded. What does the cost of the program include? Tuition, SHRM Student Membership, Networking and other special events. Are books covered in the program cost? No, you are responsible for the book requirements for each class. All other material (cases, certification prep material, handouts) will be provided by the program.

Can I apply for financial aid? Yes, you can apply for financial aid online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ or pick up an application at any high school, college or university. For specific information regarding financial aid or to find out the status of your application please contact the Financial Aid Office for the College of Business at COBFA@fiu.edu. The FIU’s Financial Aid Office web site is located at business.fiu.edu/financialaid. It is advisable that you begin the process as soon as possible. Financial Aid Office Phone number is 305-348-0148. Is the MSHRM program full time? Yes, students will be registered for a minimum of 12 credits each semester. As a full-time student you will qualify for financial aid. What is considered professional experience? Professional experience is determined on a case-by-case basis using a resume, and any requested supporting documents. Our admissions committee evaluates an individual’s accomplishments, roles, and responsibilities to determine the total number of years of professional experience. We consider the individual’s position responsibilities, managerial roles if applicable, core competencies exercised and longevity in each position. Internships are not considered when determining work experience. For our purposes, professional experience generally begins at the point of graduation. What happens if my GPA is below 3.0 or I don’t meet the GMAT/GRE required score? Can I still apply? If the applicant does not meet this criteria, he or she can still apply. University Graduate School provisions for a limited number of conditional admissions for individuals who do not meet specified criteria. The Admissions Committee will evaluate the candidate files holistically, reviewing all documents submitted (resume, working experience, letters of recommendation etc.) Admission under this provision remains on a competitive basis and admission into the program for the selected term cannot be guaranteed. Can I still submit an application online if I don’t have all my application materials ready to submit? Yes, please send supporting materials to the program via email or mail. Please include your Panther ID and date of application with your documents. Are there any scholarships available? What is an HR professional certification? HR professional certifications are provided by the Society of Human Resource Management or by the Human Resource Certification Institute. These are certifications that demonstrate relevance, competence, and credibility in the HR field. Do I need an HR professional certification to earn my degree? No, this is a credential that is not required for the program completion. Does FIU offer on-campus housing? Yes. This application is part of the ApplyYourself Application Network. To begin your application, you must sign into your application user account with your User ID and Password. Master of Science in Human Resource Management Course Descriptions Wellness Management This course focuses on managing employee safety, security, mental, attitudinal, and health-related outcomes. It will also discuss managing absenteeism, turnover, and counterproductive behavior. The course will cover attitude surveys, OSHA, and security and safety audits. Learning Objectives: 1. Understand the origins of job stress and develop coping strategies. 2. Understand and apply appropriate occupational safety standards. 3. Assess and understand the antecedents of employee attitudes, counterproductive and self-destructive behaviors. 4. Conduct security and safety audits. 5. Develop occupational safety and health interventions. Employment Law and Human Resource Management This course focuses on the legal and regulatory factors surrounding human resource management. The emphasis will be on creating awareness of legal risks and legal constraints when making HR business decisions. Case studies will be used to illustrate and discuss legal implications. These cases will discuss human resource disputes on the verge of going to court, as well as mock trials based on real human resource disputes. Numerical analysis of the workforce to assess adverse impact will be discussed. Learning Objectives: 1. Evaluate the legal implications of HR-related decisions such as those concerning selection, promotion, compensation, and training. 2. Carry out adverse impact studies. 3. Design legally defensible selection procedures. 4. Design legally defensible performance evaluation systems. 5. Conduct legally defensible performance feedback interviews and terminations. 6. Understand social security and employment taxes. 7. Handle accidents and workers’ compensation cases appropriately. 8. Understand the legal environment of unionization and collective bargaining. High Involvement Human Resource Management This course focuses on human resource practices that motivate and empower employees to excel at their job by fostering their participation and involvement in organizational decision-making. Motivational and leadership theories discussing participatory decision-making, self-managed teams, total quality management, and others will be reviewed. Students will learn how to conduct high-involvement audits and benchmarking studies so that they can successfully implement such systems in their organizations. Learning Objectives: 1. Understand the psychological principles and benefits of participatory decision-making. 2. Conduct a high-involvement audit. 3. Develop high-involvement selection systems. 4. Create productive self-managed teams. 5. Develop high-involvement performance and reward management systems.

International Human Resource Management For the global organization, success, and indeed survival, depends on how well it manages its work force. A global work force includes the home country, the host country and often, third country nationals in a variety of employment settings. Decisions about how to recruit, train, compensate, and generally manage these employees will be discussed. Cross-cultural differences in values will be examined. Emphasis will be made on managing the international assignee. Students will be given opportunities to specialize in a particular nation by conducting individual or group projects. Learning Objectives: 1. Understand issues and practices pertaining to the major HRM functions within the context of a multinational environment. 2. Recognize and value cultural differences. 3. Develop successful programs for international assignees. 4. Become an expert in a particular country with regard to issues and practices pertaining to major HRM functions. Labor Issues and Conflict Management This course offers students techniques and skills to enhance their conflict management of disputes. It is designed to teach students methods to “productively� manage interpersonal disputes between/ among parties. It emphasizes building partnerships, long-term positive relationships in the business world. Students will investigate the theoretical and practical aspects of power, personality traits, conflict assessment, communication and political disputes, and problem solving with regards to appropriate strategies, tactics and goals in conflict resolution. Learning Objectives: 1. Understand the nature of conflict in society, in groups, in organizations and within the individual. 2. Enable students to understand themselves, their personality and their reaction to conflict. 3. Learn techniques to manage conflict in their personal and professional lives. 4. Build communication and analytical skills to more effectively handle conflict resolution.

Human Resource Knowledge Management This course focuses on the management and development of the organization’s human capital. The course will cover topics such as the identification of learning needs in line with the corporate strategy, current and future performance problems and individual development of a culture; learning principles, web-based technology and post-training techniques that can maximize the return on investment through transfer of training; and the evaluation of training programs through quantitative (e.g. field research) and qualitative methods (e.g. scorecards). Learning Objectives: 1. Diagnose performance problems and training needs. 2. Develop a self-learning climate and culture. 3. Design web-based training delivery platforms. 4. Evaluate training impact.

5. Learn the techniques and practices within a third party intervention framework. This includes arbitration and mediation.

Human Resource Management Metrics This course focuses on the linkage between human resources and the organization’s financial plan. The processes of analyzing, benchmarking, controlling, and measuring the effectiveness of human resource programs will be discussed. The application of research design and measurement theory to develop meaningful HRM metrics will be emphasized. The students will learn how to report findings in a practical and influential manner. They will also learn how to use statistical software to analyze their data and draw meaningful conclusions. Learning Objectives: 1. Costing HR programs. 2. Designing scorecards to measure HR effectiveness. 3. Evaluate HR measures’ basic properties such as reliability and validity. 4. Design experimental and quasi-experimental research designs that evaluate the impact of HR programs while controlling for extraneous variables. 5. Design, administer and analyze on- and off-line HR surveys in organizations. 6. Write and present reports that effectively communicate findings and conclusions for executive decision-making. Human Resource Strategy and Planning This course discusses the notion of strategic planning in the context of human resource management. Different strategies (e.g., cost, differentiation) are reviewed along with their implications for human resource management. Basic notions of strategic management such as the development of mission statements, the identification of the organization’s competitive advantage and core competencies, and the development of corporate and business strategies are covered. This course will include case studies used to diagnose strategy. Learning Objectives: 1. Understand the importance of strategic alignment in human resource management. 2. Make the HRM function a strategic partner in the organization. 3. Forecast HR needs and future scenarios. 4. Identify, measure, and evaluate the organization’s core competencies. Performance & Talent Management This course focuses on the development and implementation of effective performance management systems. Design issues such as criterion contamination and rating formats will be covered so that the students learn how to design valid performance measurement systems. The development of multi-source and electronic performance monitoring will be covered. The process of diagnosing performance problems will be discussed. Implementation issues such as facilitating effective performance feedback interviews, coaching employees, handling poor performance and trouble employees, and documenting performance problems will be reviewed. A “systems thinking” model of succession planning and leadership development in today’s volatile workplace will be discussed. Learning Objectives: 1. Design valid performance measures. 2. Reward Systems Management This course covers all aspects of compensation and reward systems such as the strategic alignment of compensation and other HR systems, job evaluation, merit- and skill-based pay, cost-effective benefit programs, and the increasingly flexible compensation systems demanded by today’s dynamic and diverse work force. Learning Objectives: 1. Design reward systems that facilitate the attraction, development, and retention of a flexible workforce. 2. Design compensation practices and benefits that conform to relevant laws. 3. Design compensation structures that reflect job worth through job evaluation practices. 4. Design strategically aligned skill-based pay systems according to job-analytic procedures. Staffing Organizations This course focuses on the identification, recruitment, selection and promotion of successful employees. The development of systems that comply with regulatory issues such as equal employment opportunity and affirmative action laws while satisfying business goals will be covered. Measurement issues will be discussed in the context of their relevance to not only legal issues but also validity of the measures. The pros and cons of various recruitment approaches and selection techniques will also be discussed. Case studies illustrating legal issues in selection will be evaluated. The use of emerging technologies in selection and assessment will be covered. Learning Objectives: 1. Assess the presence of adverse impact in the selection procedures. 2. Carry out job analyses to identify job requirements. 3. Design valid and legally sound employment interviews. 4. Evaluate commercially available selection tests. 5. Identify managerial potential through simulations and assessment centers. 6. Design and evaluate the effectiveness of recruitment efforts. 7. Understand the legal boundaries of employee screening and invasion of privacy. Critical Thinking in Human Resource Management

Learning Objectives: 1. Integrate HRM knowledge acquired in different HR courses into holistic solutions to address multidimensional problems. 2. Recognize and summarize the six functional areas of HR. 3. Define all terms within the six functional areas along with all major HR legislation. 4. Describe the major HR responsibilities within each of the HR functional areas. 5. Demonstrate a high level of professional proficiency and mastery of the HR body of knowledge. 6. Analyze the HR body of knowledge to formulate appropriate solutions to real, HR/business challenges. 7. See HRM problems from different angles, understanding that there are multiple solutions, each one with both strengths and weaknesses.

This course focuses on developing critical thinking skills to solve complex and multidimensional human resource management problems. The course will emphasize the analysis and discussion of real HR issues and scenarios. The students will be presented with opportunities to apply HR knowledge acquired throughout their different courses to problems that have human, legal, and business dimensions. In turn, they will receive the preparation they need to become certified by SHRM as CP/SCP or by HRCI as PHR/SPHR. The course will provide a comprehensive review of the entire body of HR knowledge. Exams and assignments will include sample questions from different sources to reinforce classroom review sessions and topics that may appear on the certification exams.

Professional Development Seminars To strengthen students’ marketability and competitiveness, seminars are mandatory. I. Finance for HR Professionals (Mandatory) The purpose of this professional development seminar is to provide a broad overview of the key financial terms, tools, and reports used in organizations. Designed for an HR audience, this seminar focuses on the financial knowledge that is most critical for HR professionals. Through a series of tutorials and exercises, students will learn key finance terms, as well as how to read income statements and balance sheets. Select one of the following to fulfill second PDS requirement: II. Career Management Professional Development Seminar focused on interviewing, resume and cover letter writing, and networking. Students will be advised by their career advisor on best practices to market themselves professionally. OR III. HR Management Internship Provides students with practical experience to supplement theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom. Student placement must be within the Human Resources field. Periodic reports and conferences are required. Permission from the Faculty Director is required to enroll.

Hiller is an Associate Professor of Management and International Business and the Academic Director of the FIU Center for Leadership. In his role at the Center, he coaches managers and executives from the US and globally to help them leverage cutting-edge principles in organizational behavior and leadership. Dr. Hiller has worked with Boeing, Centers for Disease Control (CDC), HewlettPackard, and Bacardi USA, among others. He has held visiting faculty positions at Cornell, University of Washington, and FGV (Rio de Janeiro).

Dr Nathan Hiller PhD in Industrial - Organizational Psychology, Pennsylvania State University Dr. Juan Sanchez is Professor of Management and International Business and Knight-Ridder Byron Harless Eminent Chair of Management at FIU. He has served as an elected member of the Academy of Management’s Human Resource Division Executive Committee. Dr. Sanchez’ research has received awards from the International Personnel Management Association and the National Society for Performance and Instruction. He is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and the American Psychological Association.

Juan Sanchez PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, University of South Florida Dr. Mary Ann Von Glinow is the Knight Ridder Eminent Scholar Chair in International Management and former director of the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) at FIU. She has authored over 100 journal articles and fourteen books. Dr. Von Glinow was the 2010-2012 president of the Academy of International Business and previously was a faculty member of the Marshall School at the University of Southern California. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Management, Academy of International Business, and the Pan Pacific Business Association. Dr. Von Glinow has authored over 100 journal articles and fourteen books.
