As such, this one-year, accelerated, weekend HR management program focuses on the crucial skills you need to manage within an increasingly diverse and international workplace. Our master’s in human resources is designed for both human resource professionals and qualified college graduates with an interest in human resource management. Graduates of this high-quality, twelve-month HR management degree program are well prepared to address the wide spectrum of challenges facing senior HR practitioners in this era of global competitive pressure and increased regulation. Program Starting Dates
Completion Requirements To earn your MSHRM degree, you’ll need to successfully complete all 12, three-credit hour core courses for a total of 36 credit-hours, a Professional Development Seminar: Financials for HR Professionals (one-credit), and select to complete either Professional Development Seminar: Career Development (one-credit) OR a Professional Development Seminar: HR Internship course (1-3 credits). If students are selecting to complete their Professional Development Seminar requirement through an HR internship, internship must be approved by the end of the second semester of the program. Student must maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and a “C” or higher in all courses of the program and satisfy the appropriate Florida International University requirements for graduation.
Fees Tuition for the MSHRM program for 2014-2015 academic year is $2,450 per three-credit course for Florida-residents and $2,770 per three-credit course for non-Florida residents and international students. All fees are subject to change. Once a candidate is accepted into the MSHRM program, he or she will be required to submit a non-refundable $750 professional development fee, which will be applied toward the fees for the first semester in the program. The cost of tuition for a Florida resident is approximately $31,000; $35,000 for non-Florida residents and international students. Tuition for the MSHRM Online program for 2014-2015 academic year is $2,725 per three-credit course and $900 for each Professional Development Seminar. All fees are subject to change. Once a candidate is accepted into the MSHRM Online program, he or she will be required to submit a non-refundable $500 development fee, which will be applied toward the total tuition of the program. The cost of tuition for the MSHRM Online program is $35,000.

MANGO HR Center The HR Center is a multi-faceted facility on the 4th Floor of the new MANGO building to provide graduate MSHRM students and selected undergraduate students with opportunities for real-world work experiences. Students will become involved in consulting projects brought to them from our MSHRM Advisory Board and other companies. They will develop content for HR webinars and produce distance learning materials. They will create an HR Newsletter for South Florida. They will also form an alliance with COB Career Services to train students in interviewing and resume building skills.

What kind of undergraduate degree must I have to qualify for this program? FIU requires you to have a four-year bachelor degree from an accredited university. Do I include my certified transcripts with the application? FIU requires that official transcripts are sent in directly by the college(s) or university (ies) you attend(ed). You cannot send in copies of these transcripts yourself. If you are an alumnus (ae) of FIU, there is no need to have transcripts sent. If you attended a university outside the U.S. and the transcripts are not in English, they must be translated by a certified translator. The translation and an official copy of the transcripts must be submitted.
Is the MSHRM program full time? Yes, students will be registered for a minimum of 12 credits each semester. As a full time student you will qualify for financial aid.
Can I waive the TOEFL/IELTS? International students may waive the TOEFL exam only if they have earned an undergraduate or master’s degree in a TOEFL-exempt country. Those who are not waived from the TOEFL requirement will need to score at least 550 on the paper-based, 213 on the computer-based, 80 on the internet-based test or official minimum IELTS score of 6.5, or an equivalent score on a comparable examination. What is considered professional experience? Professional experience is determined on a case-by-case basis using a resume, and any requested supporting documents. Our admissions committee evaluates an individual’s accomplishments, roles, and responsibilities to determine the total number of years of professional experience. We consider the individual’s position responsibilities, managerial roles if applicable, core competencies exercised and longevity in each position. Internships are not considered when determining work experience. For our purposes, professional experience generally begins at the point of graduation.
For how many years are my test scores valid? GMAT scores - 5 years GRE scores - 5 years TOEFL scores - 2 years Institutional TOEFL scores (FIU) - 1 year
What happens if my GPA is below 3.0 or I don’t meet the GMAT/GRE required score? Can I still apply? If the applicant does not meet this criteria, he or she can still apply. University Graduate School provisions for a limited number of admissions for individuals who do not meet specified criteria. The Admissions Committee will evaluate the candidate files holistically reviewing all documents submitted (resume, working experience, letters of recommendation etc.) Admission under this provision remains on a competitive basis and admission into the program for the selected term cannot be guaranteed.
How many students are there in a class? The maximum number of students per class is 54. An average of 30 students admitted each semester. Is a thesis required in the program? No, there is no required thesis. Do I need to complete an internship to graduate from the program? No, if you decide not to complete an internship for credit while in the program you may take the Career Management Professional Development Seminar to meet the program requirements. Can classes be waived if I took some MSHRM classes in another university? Classes taken in another university program will not be waived since this is a 12-month, lock-step program. Courses from other programs also are not transferable. Can I pursue two graduate degrees at the same time? No. Unfortunately, you cannot pursue two degrees at the same time at FIU. Can I prolong the MSHRM program for more than 12 months? No, you cannot prolong the MSHRM for more than 12 months. Since it is a lock-step program, you must remain with your class throughout the entire sequence until the program is concluded. What does the cost of the program include? Tuition, SHRM Student Membership, Networking and other special events. Are books covered in the program cost? No, you are responsible for the book requirements for each class. All other material (Cases, SHRM Certification prep material, handouts) will be provided by the program.

Can I apply for financial aid? Yes. You can apply for financial aid online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ or pick up an application at any high school, college or university. Course Descriptions Wellness Management
International Human Resource Management
This course focuses on managing employee safety, security, mental, attitudinal, and health-related outcomes. It will also discuss managing absenteeism, turnover, and counterproductive behavior. The course will cover attitude surveys, OSHA, and security and safety audits.
For the global organization, success and indeed survival depends on how well it manages its work force. A global work force includes the home country, the host country and often, third country nationals in a variety of employment settings. Decisions about how to recruit, train, compensate, and generally manage these employees will be discussed. Cross-cultural differences in values will be examined. Emphasis will be made on managing the international assignee. Students will be given opportunities to specialize in a particular nation by conducting individual or groups projects.

Employment Law and Human Resource Management
4. Become an expert in a particular country with regard to issues and practices pertaining to major HRM functions.
This course focuses on the legal and regulatory factors surrounding human resource management. The emphasis will be on creating awareness of legal risks and legal constraints when making HR business decisions. Case studies will be used to illustrate and discuss legal implications. These cases will discuss human resource disputes on the verge of going to court, as well as mock trials based on real human resource disputes. Numerical analysis of the workforce to assess adverse impact will be discussed. Learning Objectives: 1. Evaluate the legal implications of HR-related decisions such as those concerning selection, promotion, compensation, and training.
Labor Issues and Conflict Management This course offers students techniques and skills to enhance their conflict management of disputes. It is designed to teach students methods to “productively” manage inter personal disputes between/ among parties. It emphasizes building partnerships, long-term positive relationships in the business world. Students will investigate the theoretical and practical aspects of power, personality traits, conflict assessment, communication and political disputes and problem solving with regards to appropriate strategies, tactics and goals in conflict resolution.

Motivational and leadership theories discussing participatory decision-making, self-managed teams, total quality management, and others will be reviewed. Students will learn how to conduct high-involvement audits and benchmarking studies so that they can successfully implement such systems in their organizations.
Human Resource Knowledge Management This course focuses on the management and development of the organization’s human capital. The course will cover topics such as the identification of learning needs in line with the corporate strategy, current and future performance problems and individual development of a culture; learning principles, web-based technology and post-training techniques that can maximize the return on investment through transfer of training; and the evaluation of training programs through quantitative (e.g. field research) and qualitative methods (e.g. scorecards). The students will learn how to design challenging yet attainable and measurable instructional objectives.

Reward Systems Management
This course focuses on the linkage between human resources and the organization’s financial plan. The processes of analyzing, benchmarking, controlling, and measuring the effectiveness of human resource programs will be discussed. The application of research design and measurement theory to develop meaningful HRM metrics will be emphasized. The students will learn how to report findings in a practical and influential manner. They will also learn how to use statistical software to analyze their data and draw meaning conclusions.
This course covers all aspects of compensation and reward systems such as the strategic alignment of compensation and other HR systems, job evaluation, merit- and skill-based pay, cost-effective benefit programs, and the increasingly flexible compensation systems demanded by today’s dynamic and diverse work force.

Human Resource Strategy and Planning This course discusses the notion of strategic planning in the context of human resource management. Different strategies (e.g., cost, differentiation) are reviewed along with their implications for human resource management. Basic notions of strategic management such as the development of mission statements, the identification of the organization’s competitive advantage and core competencies, and the development of corporate and business strategies are covered. In addition, the tools that facilitate strategic human resource management such as HR inventories, knowledge management, and the alignment of the organizational culture and the organization’s strategy are reviewed. This course focuses on developing critical thinking skills to solve complex and multidimensional human resource management problems. The course will emphasize the analysis and discussion of real HR issues and scenarios. The students will be presented with opportunities to apply HR knowledge acquired throughout their different courses to problems that have human, legal, and business dimensions. In turn, they will receive the preparation they need to become certified by SHRM as PHR or SPHR. The course will provide a comprehensive review of the entire body of HR knowledge. Exams and Assignments will include sample questions from different sources to reinforce class-room review sessions and topics that may appear on the certification exams. The class will provide classroom reinforcement while utilizing the HRCP program and the SHRM Learning System.
Performance & Talent Management This course focuses on the development and implementation of effective performance management systems. Design issues such as criterion contamination and rating formats will be covered so that the students learn how to design valid performance measurement systems. The development of multi-source and electronic performance monitoring will be covered. The process of diagnosing performance problems will be discussed. Implementation issues such as facilitating effective performance feedback interviews, coaching employees, handling poor performance and trouble employees, and documenting performance problems will be reviewed. A “systems thinking” model of succession planning and leadership development in today’s volatile workplace will be discussed.

Professional Development Seminars To strengthen students’ marketability and competitiveness, seminars are mandatory. I. Finance for HR Professionals (Mandatory) The purpose of this professional development seminar is to provide a broad overview of the key financial terms, tools, and reports used in organizations. Designed for an HR audience, this seminar focuses on the financial knowledge that is most critical for HR professionals. Through a series of tutorials and exercises, students will learn key finance terms, as well as how to read income statements and balance sheets. Select one of the following to fulfill second PDS requirement: II. Career Management Professional Development Seminar focused on interviewing, resume and cover letter writing, and networking. Students will be advised by their career advisor on best practices to market themselves professionally. OR III. HR Management Internship Provides students with practical experience to supplement theoretical of knowledge acquired in the classroom. Student placement must be with the Human Resources field.
