Golf
OPERATIONS Sean Hanna, Director of Golf
As the Golf Operations team settles into February, we are hard at work getting ready for 2024. All the behind the scenes work to prepare for 2024 is in full swing. The team is working diligently on calendars, flyers, and all the documents that you see throughout the year. The Club’s new tee time system is now fully operational. If you need any assistance in signing in to the new system, please contact the Golf Shop and one of the Golf Professional’s will be able to help you. Enjoy the month of February wherever you are. GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT Grant Suderman
The most common question I receive as a Golf Course Superintendent is “What do you do all
winter?”. It may come as a surprise that playing card games and hosting shop parties is not the answer! Our winter months without consistent golf rarely last over 3 months. However, these few months prove vital as they provide the GCM team with an opportunity to add value to the club through construction/capital projects, tree work, refurbishing materials, equipment maintenance and associate training.
PAINTING COURSE SIGNAGE AND TEE MARKERS
Outside work remains our focus throughout winter as long as conditions are favorable. We take advantage of days with limited golf to focus on course enhancements such as our current fairway drainage project. Tree work is also a staple of our winter tasks. However, there are times when conditions reach unsafe levels (like the -30° wind chill days in January!). This is when we turn our focus to inside projects. We take these freezing days as an opportunity to paint, stain and rebuild all course materials. We put emphasis on shop and equipment maintenance including grinding all mower blades in house. We also use this time to cross train associates on various equipment and skills therefore providing additional value to the team. These are just some of the tasks that are performed during these cold periods. When planned accordingly these wintry days prove essential to the success of the golf course maintenance operation.
We thank you for your support and hope you all stay safe and warm! Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns at grants@lochlloyd.com.

Operations Director Kim Palmer “I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you are DOING SOMETHING.” -Neil Gaiman In 2023, we tackled change at Loch Lloyd. We were intentional in trying new ideas and putting a new spin on Club favorites. Some were hits - offering notary services, Little Chef’s Cooking Classes, Wine on 9, Family Game Nights, creating an elegant garden party poolside for the Ladies of the Brigadoon, Putter Madness, grill at Comfort Station during Men’s League, Spouses Day during the Whummle. And some were misses - Adult Spring Break/Luau (although the fire dancers were impressive), serving chicken AND beef at Ladies Guest Day, buffets in general outside of our large holiday events, certain menu items, etc. And while we didn’t always hit the mark with our endeavors, there was a learning in everything. These learnings, in addition to member feedback and staying responsible to our organizational budget, are what have set the foundation for 2024. You will see the successes of 2023 become traditions and you will also see more change as we continue to find the perfect array of menu items, as we adjust pricing to ensure we are being fair to our members as well as our bottom line, as we try new events and alter existing options to bring the best member experience possible. A few changes you will see in February (additional info in this newsletter): 1 - We are trying a Valentine’s Day Pop-Up Bar. If you aren’t familiar with the concept, just know Valentine’s Day is going to EXPLODE all over the 19th Hole. February 6 - 14th. Stop by! 2 - We are starting a WINTER HAPPY HOUR Tuesday - Saturday. Come and get toasty with us! 3 - LOVERS BINGO! All I am going to say is DO NOT MISS THIS. Bringing a lover is not required. 4 - Family Movie Night. I may be most excited for this. PJ’s and blankets strongly suggested. With the spirit of change in mind, I encourage you each to try something new. Change something. See what happens. Professionally - I am going to finish the 2024 Loch Lloyd Event Calendar where change will be scattered into each month. Personally, I am going to participate in the Groundhog Run to benefit Agility KC and I have put my name in the lottery to hike Havasu. Stay tuned!
- Kim Palmer

LLLGA INFORMATION These freezing temperatures are certainly not hospitable for a round of golf but that doesn’t mean we can’t think about it! A lot of work has already gone into planning out dates for this year’s LLLGA and Club sponsored events. More information will be provided in advance of any event, as well as in the 2024 LLLGA Booklet, which you’ll receive when you join/rejoin our league. As communicated last month, 18-hole play days will be on Tuesday mornings and 9-hole play on Wednesday evenings. In addition, the following are this year’s dates for our LLLGA and Ladies Only Club Sponsored Special Events: April 23rd | Opening Day* May 16th & 17th | Ladies Member-Member June 18th | 18-Hole Informal Guest Day June 26th | 9-Hole Guest Day July 3rd | Red, White & Blue 9-Hole Fun July 9th & 10th | Solheim Cup July 30th | 18-Hole Formal Guest Day September 19th - 21st | The Brigadoon Member-Guest Tournament October 15th | Closing Day* *Opening and Closing Days are afternoon golf events followed by dinner, a meeting and fun surprises! In the meantime, until the start of our golf season, we’d like to provide gathering opportunities for the ladies who are not wintering away. Our first gathering will be on January 31st, which is the fourth Wednesday of the month (NOT the third Wednesday as I’d previously announced). We’ll gather for lunch at noon in the Fireside Room. Hopefully the weather will be a bit warmer, and we’ll be anxious to get out for a fun ladies lunch. We’ll also be meeting for lunch on February 28th and March 27th. Lunches are on your own, which helps pay down those monthly minimums during the winter months! To ensure the club is properly staffed for our gathering, I will be providing an estimate of how many of us to expect. So, please either let me, or the club, know that you plan to attend. Being that this is not a specific LLLGA event, all ladies who are Loch Lloyd members are welcome to join us. It’s a great way to get to know your neighbors and other club members and learn more about the fun we have as members of the LLLGA! I hope those of you in town will consider joining us, regardless of your golfing status! After all, “There are no strangers here; only friends you haven’t yet met.” William Butler Yeats.
